Page 4 Second Sunday of Advent December 4, 2011

Dear Sacred Heart Parishioners,

“Awesome‖ is a word that became popular several years ago. It is a word that could appropriately be applied to our divine liturgy, the Mass, and the other sacramental rites. In the celebration of Mass time and space are annihilated, and we are joined to the sacred events of Calvary, the suffering, crucifixion, death, and ultimate resurrection of our saving Lord, and following that, his ascen-sion. So sacred and special is the time of the Mass, that the few minutes before it and after it are also special. The proper decorum which is to be observed in Mass should be found both before and after the celebration of the Mass itself. Since we have fully begun the new liturgical year, there are several topics regarding liturgy—especially the celebration of Mass—that I wish to address. These are attire at Mass and other rites, and certain behaviors during Mass and other liturgical experiences. Our Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion have been asked not to wear clothing with words, num-bers, or letters on them. When you approach someone to receive Holy Communion, you should not be dis-tracted by clothing which promotes a school, athletic team, place of employment, etc. I am pleased to note that most of our Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion are dressing appropriately for their sacred du-ties, and are in fact dressing up for this divine ministry. I share with you a concern I continue to have about the attire of some of our brides and/or their female at-tendants. With bared shoulders, plunging necklines, and sometimes very short dresses, some of these ladies seem to cross the line of appropriate attire for sacred rites. The most important moment of the wedding day is that time in the wedding ceremony when the couple pledge to each other before God their unreserved faithfulness, permanence, and openness to the gift of chil-dren, which are expressed in the exchange of marriage vows. Wedding attire of everyone, but especially of the wedding party, should be chosen which reflects and respects the highlight of the day, the exchange of vows in the parish church. The amount of feminine flesh which is frequently displayed at weddings surely must make the Blessed Mother blush. This also may apply to the wedding guests, whose attire is sometimes more appropriate for the beach or the nightclub than for the church during the exchange of solemn vows. This topic of appropriate clothing for sacred rites should also be applied to the clothing worn to the weekend Mass by anyone at any time, but especially in the summer. Sometimes the summer clothing is really too casual for Mass. This brings to mind a conversation of some years ago. Someone stated, ―God doesn‘t care what we wear to Mass; it‘s just important to be there.‖ Another responded, ―Maybe God doesn‘t care what you wear to church, but you should.‖ The other behaviors that I wish to bring to your attention are two in number. The first is a concern with gum chewing. It is entirely inappropriate to chew gum during Mass. Please have enough respect for yourself, for those around you, and for the sacred liturgy, and do not chew gum during Mass.

Join The Choir for Christmas Are you reading the ―LITTLE BLUE BOOK‖ (six minutes a day)? Not much time at all! How about giving approximately five hours of your time in praising God during this time of the year? Why not experience a more personal and rewarding involvement in the liturgy? Become rejuvenated by singing in the church choir! Attend three choir prac-tices (Dec 7, 14, 21 at 7:00 pm) and then sing MIDNIGHT MASS on December 25th! If you are a senior high youth or older, can carry a tune, balance, blend and, better yet, read parts, we'd love to have you join Sa-cred Heart Choir this season!

The other behavior is that of people leaving Mass early. I can understand that occasionally one might need to leave Mass early, for a pressing concern. But there are people who regularly leave Mass early. Surely you can find a way to stay for the entire Mass. In addition, there are people who leave Mass nearly every Sunday to use the restroom or for whatever thing they do, and these are people who one would think would be old enough not to have to be leaving Mass on such a regular basis.. The sacred liturgy—by its own nature—is an elevated human activity, an exalted event which is indeed counter-cultural. In liturgy we rise above that which is profane, common, banal, or pedestrian, and enter a time and ex-perience which is exalted above the ordinary. Consider the liturgical clothing of the clergy. Clearly this clothing is not ordinary everyday clothing. This clothing is an example of what one of my seminary professors used to de-scribe as ‗conscious excess.‖ In the celebration of liturgy the church consciously and intentionally rises above the ordinary, it attempts to do things bigger and differently than that which is ordinary, as befits the nature and dig-nity of the sacred liturgy. This is clearly seen in the language of the new translation of the Roman Missal. The vocabulary of the new missal is certainly exalted—in keeping with the nature of liturgy. It is not ordinary. This is above that which is common. It is my hope that this new translation will not be so exalted as to appear stilted. Now that we have the lovely new covers for our music book, could we be conscious to place the books in the book rack so that the front of the book is facing forward? This will make the church look nicer for those who come for the next Mass. Thanks for your consideration of these items. With the beginning of the new liturgical year, along with the new translation of the Roman Missal, it seemed to me opportune to review our attire and behaviors at Mass and other sacred rites, and, as may be needed, to ―ramp-up‖ our attire and behavior to truly reflect and respect the dignity of the sacred liturgy. —Father Bill Reynolds

―We‘re taking a look at the next year and how we can better serve the sea-farers and at the same time make what we do the most efficient that it can be,‖ Father

Sinclair Oubre, president of Apostleship of the Sea of the United States of America, said about the recent board meeting for the organization. Board members for AOSUSA from throughout the country gathered for the Winter 2011 Administrative Board meeting Nov. 28-29 at the Port Arthur Interna-tional Seafarer Center. The board meets twice a year to discuss business and also to plan for the annual meeting that all members of AOSUSA attend. During this two-day meeting the board went over administrative procedure policies, by-law changes and preparation for the annual meeting as well as the World Congress. ―We‘re trying to put ourselves on a financial ba-sis to continue our work on cruise ships and the work in the seafarer centers across the nation. We‘re really con-cerned with widening the scope of this organization,‖ Father Art Shute, board member and cruise ship chap-lain from Venice, Fla. The board threw some ideas back and forth about topics and guest speakers for the annual meeting. Education and compassion for seafarers were paramount in the decision process. Prayer for Vocations In an effort to foster a culture of vocations in our par-ish, we will have a time of prayer for vocations after the Masses this weekend. Members of the parish are always invited to remain in the church following Mass for a quiet time of personal meditation. This weekend, an effort will be made to use time after Mass for parishion-ers to focus their prayer on vocations. Following the closing song, for those who wish to remain, a group prayer will be recited followed by an invitation for per-sonal reflection. We ask all to observe silence while exit-ing church.

Prayer for Vocations

God our Father, our needs are great and our people hunger to hear the Gospel proclaimed in word, deed and sacrament.

Send the power of your Holy Spirit to encourage men and women to open their

hearts to hear Your call and to joyfully serve in the Diocese of Davenport as priests,

deacons, religious and lay ministers.

May those who minister now be filled with Your Spirit of courage and love. May they persevere in their call to serve Your people.

Grant that many will be inspired by their witness and love to answer Your call.

We ask this through Christ our Lord...Amen.

When we have 60% of the final cost of the whole project we will place the order for the remaining windows. Designating the stained glass window project as a recipient of gifts on the occasion of a funeral would provide a nice tribute to your loved one and help advance the stained glass window project. Thanks to those who have already made a contribution to the stained glass windows project.

Jasper County Ride needs more Out of Town drivers: This program provides transportation to those individuals who have no other means to get to vital services and appointments. The volunteers serve as drivers for people with disabilities, those with limited income, and/or senior citizens. Many of the clients who qualify for a ride do not have their own transportation and do not have family or friends in the area to help them get to vital appointments. These vital appointments include: medical, dental, eye exams, chemotherapy, radiation treatments, physical and occupational therapy, kidney dialysis, and gro-cery shopping. More drivers are needed for out of town trips, we need those who love to drive, read, study, and/or peo-ple watch to come see us about being added to our volunteer driver list! Mileage reimbursement is provided by Skiff Medical Center. Please call ISU extension office at 792-6433 and ask for Tanya or Denice.

Plus…something else to keep in mind: Jasper County RIDE offers Door-To-Door Service, which means that if the person needs assistance from the ve-hicle the rider will arrange that at the location you are taking them to. Someone at the building will help them into the building.

The Lord was Baptized, not to be cleansed Himself, but to cleanse the waters, so that those waters,

cleansed by the flesh of Christ which knew no sin, might have the power of Baptism.

Labels for education.

CLIP. EARN. HELP THEM LEARN.

That was so exciting to hear that All Saints Catholic School in Davenport was able to purchase a fax machine and some pencil sharpeners because of all the Labels for Educa-tion that have been given to them!! They were able to do this in part because of YOUR generosity! Woo Hoo!!!!! I noticed that another Newton School isn't saving the Campbell's labels anymore. Please don't stop saving them, please bring them here for the students at All Saints Catholic School. This is a great family project. Please continue to save the UPC from your Campbell‘s products. Items to save are; Camp-bell‘s Soup at Hand, Chunky Soups, Select Harvest Soups, Spaghettio‘s, V-8 (Regular,

Splash, Fusion), Pepperidge Farm Products, Gold Fish, Prego Spaghetti Sauce, and Swanson Broth. There is a detailed list on the bulletin board in McCann Center. If you are unsure on what the UPC code is, just take off the whole label and we can trim off the part that is needed. Thanks so much for your help!

Sample UPC Code:

Why doesn’t the term immaculate conception also apply to Jesus’ conception?

I know Immaculate Conception refers to Mary’s conception because she was born without original sin. But since Jesus was also born without original sin, wouldn’t that term refer to his conception as well?

Christine

Dear Christine, The dogma of the Immaculate Conception asserts that Mary was free of the stain of original sin from the time she was conceived. Jesus was also free of the stain of original sin, but his conception by Mary is referred to as the Incarnation of Christ. In the Roman Catholic liturgical calendar, Mary‘s conception is celebrated on December 8, and her birth-day is celebrated exactly nine months later on September 8. Likewise, Christ‘s conception is celebrated on March 25, and his birthday is celebrated exactly nine months later on December 25. Mary‘s Immaculate Conception was celebrated many centuries before Pope Pius IX defined it as dogma on December 8, 1854, in his apostolic constitution Ineffabilis Deus: ―That the Most Blessed Virgin Mary was pre-served from all stain of original sin in the first instant of her conception, by a singular grace and privilege of Al-mighty God… has been revealed by God and must, therefore, firmly and constantly be believed by all the faith-ful.‖

Is 40:1-5, 9-11 / 2 Pt 3:8-14 / Mk 1:1-8

Comfort, give comfort to my people, says your God. These very direct words form God and the phrase that follows, ―Speak to the heart of Jerusalem,‖ would be enough if they were the only Scriptural words we heard this weekend. They are straightforward and carry such weight. Speaking through Isaiah to the suffering Hebrew people, God was promising an end to their suffering — even though it was not evident yet—telling them to prepare with joy for God‘s coming. They were to prepare for a future that was ―already but not yet‖ — it was present through God‘s promise, but not yet in its fullness. Comfort, give comfort to my people, says your God. Speaking to the heart is essential in giving comfort. My husband and I use a mantra during the Advent season — ―Let‘s be gentle with each other.‖ The holidays bring scheduling conflicts, multiple family commit-ments, and long to-do lists. When we‘re stressed, we can would each other with harsh words, impatience, and thoughtlessness. As we prepare for Christ‘s birth — an ―already, but not yet‖ experience — we‘d all do well to remember comforting, gentle words in our closest relationships. Comfort, give comfort to my people, says your God. Jesus inaugurated the kingdom of God, so it‘s already here, but not yet in its fullness, which will occur with Jesus‘ return. Great suffereing, brokenness, and grief remain. The best way to live in this already-but-not-yet world is by acting with tender comfort toward all of God‘s children. We never know how much hurt another is experiencing when we meet them. We can be the gentle presence of God — the great Comforter.
