November 4, 2018 Thirty-first Sunday in Ordinary Time GOD’S LAWS God’s laws are not intended to burden or torment us. Instead they are guideposts that point us in the direction of good living. Accordingly, good living requires loving God and loving one another. We should not follow God’s laws out of fear of what might happen if we don’t, but rather view them as a foundation for building relationships and trust with one another and with God. The Shema prayer of Orthodox Jews is based on the reading from Deuteronomy today, “Hear, O Israel.” Every morning people recite the prayer as a profession of their love for God and pledge their obedience to God throughout the day. They pass on their love of God to their children, from one generation to the next. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co., Inc. TODAY’S READINGS First Reading — The LORD, the God of your fathers, will give you a land flowing with milk and honey (Deuteronomy 6:2-6). Psalm — I love you, Lord, my strength (Psalm 18). Second Reading — Jesus is always able to save those who approach God through him (Hebrews 7:23-28). Gospel — To love God with all your heart and to love your neighbor as yourself is worth more than all burnt offerings and sacrifices (Mark 12:28b-34). READINGS FOR THE WEEK Monday: Phil 2:1-4; Ps 131:1bcde-3; Lk 14:12-14 Tuesday: Phil 2:5-11; Ps 22:26b-30ab, 30e, 31-32; Lk 14:15-24 Wednesday: Phil 2:12-18; Ps 27:1, 4, 13-14; Lk 14:25-33 Thursday: Phil 3:3-8a; Ps 105:2-7; Lk 15:1-10 Friday: Ez 47:1-2, 8-9, 12; Ps 46:2-3, 5-6, 8-9; 1 Cor 3:9c-11, 16-17; Jn 2:13-22 Saturday: Phil 4:10-19; Ps 112:1b-2, 5-6, 8a, 9; Lk 16:9-15 Sunday: 1 Kgs 17:10-16; Ps 146:7-10; Heb 9:24-28; Mk 12:38-44 [41-44]

SAINTS AND SPECIAL OBSERVANCES Sunday: Thirty-first Sunday in Ordinary Time; National Vocation Awareness Week; Daylight Saving Time ends Tuesday: Election Day Friday: The Dedication of the Lateran Basilica Saturday: St. Leo the Great TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Just two years ago, we engaged in one of the core activities of our democratic system: a presidential election. Actually, the institution of election can be traced to traditions in the Church, and although bishops are no longer chosen in this way, abbots and abbesses (heads of monastic communities) have almost always been elected by full voting members of their communities. The lifetime appointment begins when the monks or nuns are gathered in “chapter” at the death or resignation of the abbot, and fortunately for all involved, campaigning is not allowed! The members of the community discern, with prayer to the Holy Spirit, who among them is the best suited for leadership. Once chosen, the new leader requests the blessing of the local bishop, who usually presides at a ceremony of consecration or investiture. The ballots are always secret, and a simple majority must be achieved. In our American system the Electoral College is the determining voice in the presidential election, not the popular election on a November Tuesday, just as the monastic chapter is the electorate. Today, most religious orders elect general superiors in “chapter” by delegates of the professed members, and usually for a term of six years. A few, like the Jesuits, elect for life. At least we don’t have that weight on our shoulders when we choose a president. Four years at a time will do! —Rev. James Field, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co. PRAY FOR THE DEAD Let us not hesitate to help those who have died and offer our prayers for them. —St. John Chrysostom NEITHER DESPAIR NOR PRESUME Two criminals were crucified with Christ. One was saved; do not despair. One was not; do not presume. —St. Augustine

Thirty-first Sunday in Ordinary Time November 4, 2018 You shall love the LORD, your God, with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your strength. — Deuteronomy 6:5

LECTURAS DE LA SEMANA Lunes: Fil 2:1-4; Sal 131 (130):1bcde-3; Lc 14:12-14 Martes: Fil 2:5-11; Sal 22 (21):26b-30ab, 30e, 31-32; Lc 14:15-24 Miércoles: Fil 2:12-18; Sal 27 (26):1, 4, 13-14; Lc 14:25-33 Jueves: Fil 3:3-8a; Sal 105 (104):2-7; Lc 15:1-10 Viernes: Ez 47:1-2, 8-9, 12; Sal 46 (45):2-3, 5-6, 8-9; 1 Cor 3:9c-11, 16-17; Jn 2:13-22 Sábado: Fil 4:10-19; Sal 112 (111):1b-2, 5-6, 8a, 9; Lc 16:9-15 Domingo: 1 Re 17:10-16; Sal 146 (145):7-10; Heb 9:24-28; Mc 12:38-44 [41-44]

— Deuteronomio 6:5

CEDARBRAKE CATHOLIC RETREAT CENTER Upcoming retreats Oct. 30: Bryan/College Station - Listening to the Voice of God Nov. 2-4: Weekend Reflections down the Yellow Brick Road of Life Nov. 7: Day Retreat The Invitation: Living As the Be-loved! Dec. 1: El Adviento y la Cultura de Encuentro

November 9-11 is the National Donor Sabbath when faith communities throughout the country unite to increase awareness of the critical need for organs and tissues and the miracle of transplantation. Religious leaders are en-couraged to participate in discussions of donation with their parishioners to affirm that choosing to be an organ and tissue donor offers the opportunity to share the great-est blessing of all – the Gift of Life. More than 115,000 people are listed on the national transplant waiting list. As a registered organ donor, each person can save eight lives. Please consider registering at www.TOSA1.org.

As we enter the church and find our seat, we should sit or kneel to quietly pray, reflect or meditate. This is not a time to socialize with those who we know. If we must talk, it should be done very quietly and kept extremely brief. Respect must be shown for Christ, whose Eucharis-tic presence is amongst us in the tabernacle and for all our fellow parishioners. Rosary is recited 30 minutes before Sunday Mass. Come early and join us. This is a good way of getting ourselves ready for a more conscious and interior disposition for the celebration of the Mass.

Holy Cross Cemetery cordially invites everyone to the dedication ceremony for the new Crucifix given in memory of Msgr. Mark Derring. The ceremony will be TODAY November 4, 2018 at 2:00pm. The Crucifix is near the front entrance of S 5th Street.

On Thursday Nov. 9th the Church will celebrate the feast of the Dedication of the Lateran Basilica in Rome, the oldest and highest ranking of the four major basilicas in Rome. This observance also reminds us of the importance of the material buildings in which the community gathers to celebrate the praises of God. Every community there-fore has the duty to take special care of its own sacred buildings, which are a precious religious and historical patrimony. For this we call upon the intercession of Mary Most Holy, that she help us to become, like her, the “house of God,” living temple of his love. Things to Do: Learn more about St. John Lateran; This basilica represents the place of baptism, so it

would be a good time to renew your baptismal prom-ises;

It also represents heaven, so we can meditate on the joys of heaven and God's generosity in giving us suf-ficient graces to be saved;

Since St. John Lateran is the Pope's church, say a prayer for our Holy Father;

Say an extra prayer for all priests, especially those that you personally know. Continue to promote in your house vocation to priesthood and religious life. Talk about this calling in your home and workplace.

The liturgical year is almost over. Would you like to con-sider becoming a member of any church organization or ministry like lector, extraordinary ministers of Holy Com-munion, church or activity center cleaner, mowing the church's ground. Please don't hesitate. This will certainly help you and the parish to grow in faith.

Enrollment is up at St. Louis Catholic School and a sec-ond PreK-4 class was opened this year because of the in-crease in enrollment.
