December 29, 2019 The Holy Family of Jesus, Mary, and Joseph SALVATION IN DAILY LIFE This Sunday is the feast of the Holy Family, which comes on the first Sunday after Christmas Day. Today’s feast celebrates how the humanity of Jesus (including his entire family life) has brought saving significance into the daily rhythms of our human family life. The scriptures offer instruction and encouragement on how to share—within our families, parish families, and the wider human family—the love that God shares with us in Jesus. Selections from Sirach, Psalm 128, and Colossians encourage us to reflect divine love and thus find holiness in all our human relationships. The reading from Matthew’s Gospel offers a living example of love in the actions Joseph took to protect his young family from danger and to nurture them within the larger family of faith of their time. Martyred under Henry VIII in 1535, Thomas More declared, “I die the king’s good servant, but God’s first!” Thomas Becket could have said the same four centuries earlier. As Henry II’s closest friend and trusted chancellor, Becket, the king presumed, could be counted on, if made archbishop, to deliver the church to royal control. But Becket experienced a profound conversion, confirmed by the ordination liturgy’s rich symbolism of the bishop as Good Shepherd and the church as Bride of Christ. Renouncing secular responsibilities, distributing his wealth to the poor, Thomas became the church’s uncompromising champion. Faced with this “new” Becket, the king’s previous friendship turned into a ferocious, almost irrational hatred. As eight centuries later, Archbishop Romero would be martyred at the altar of Christ’s sacrifice, Becket was slain before the altar of Canterbury Cathedral by royal agents, neither the first nor last good shepherd to lay down his life as the price of freedom for Christ’s church and justice for Christ’s sheep. —Peter Scagnelli, Copyright © J. 29 de diciembre de 2019 La Sagrada Familia de Jesús, María y José SALVACIÓN EN LA VIDA DIARIA Este domingo es la fiesta de la Sagrada Familia que cae en el primer domingo después del Día de Navidad. La fiesta de hoy celebra cómo la humanidad de Jesús (incluso toda su familia) ha dado significado salvífico a los quehaceres diarios de nuestra propia vida familiar. Las lecturas ofrecen instrucción y aliento sobre cómo compartir –dentro de nuestras familias, en la familia de la parroquia y en la más amplia familia humana– el amor que Dios comparte con nosotros en Jesús. Selecciones de Eclesiástico, del salmo 128 (127), y colosenses nos alientan a ser reflejo del amor divino y así encontrar la santidad en todas nuestras relaciones humanas. Como canciller, en ausencia del rey, estuvo al mando del reino. No obstante, Enrique II era ambicioso y quería a la Iglesia bajo su dominio, fue por eso que le nombró como Arzobispo de Canterbury en 1162. Sin embargo, Tomás cambió radicalmente: renunció a la cancillería, vendió su mansión, dio el dinero a los pobres y se fue a un monasterio viviendo humildemente. Se opuso públicamente al rey y a sus intenciones de sometimiento de la Iglesia hasta que el mismo rey lo amenazó con la muerte, razón por la que se expatrió a Francia. Luego de una reconciliación temporal, el rey expresó su deseo de librarse del arzobispo y envió a una guardia real a que lo asesinaran, hecho que ocurrió en el altar mayor de la catedral mientras Tomás Becket celebraba la Eucaristía. THE STORY OF MARY, MOTHER OF GOD

Mary’s divine motherhood broadens the Christmas spotlight. Mary has an important role to play in the Incarnation of the Sec-ond Person of the Blessed Trinity. She consents to God’s invita-tion conveyed by the angel (Luke 1:26-38). Elizabeth proclaims: “Most blessed are you among women and blessed is the fruit of your womb. And how does this happen to me, that the mother of my Lord should come to me?” (Luke 1:42-43, emphasis added). Mary’s role as mother of God places her in a unique position in God’s redemptive plan. Without naming Mary, Paul asserts that “God sent his Son, born of a woman, born under the law” (Galatians 4:4). Paul’s further statement that “God sent the spirit of his Son into our hearts, crying out ‘Abba, Father!’” helps us realize that Mary is mother to all the brothers and sisters of Jesus. Some theologians also insist that Mary’s motherhood of Jesus is an important element in God’s creative plan. God’s “first” thought in creating was Jesus. Jesus, the incarnate Word, is the one who could give God perfect love and worship on behalf of all creation. As Jesus was “first” in God’s mind, Mary was “second” insofar as she was chosen from all eternity to be his mother. The precise title “Mother of God” goes back at least to the third or fourth century. In the Greek form Theotokos—God-bearer—it became the touchstone of the Church’s teaching about the Incar-nation. The Council of Ephesus in 431 insisted that the holy Fa-thers were right in calling the holy virgin Theotokos. At the end of this particular session, crowds of people marched through the street shouting: “Praised be the Theotokos!” The tradition reach-es to our own day. In its chapter on Mary’s role in the Church, Vatican II’s Dogmatic Constitution on the Church calls Mary “Mother of God” 12 times. (from the franciscan Media)

HOLY DAY OF OBLIGATION Jan. 1st is the solemnity of Mary, Mother of God and it is a holy day of obligation for us Cathoilcs, meaning we are asked to go to Mass. The Mass schedule for our parish is as follows: Dec. 31st - Vigil Mass and the Mass of the day is at 10 am. This is a great way to end the year singing "Te Deum" to God for eve-rything and entrust the New Year to Him through our Blessed Mother. Come and let us Worship

LA HISTORIA DE MARÍA MADRE DE DIOS La maternidad divina de María amplía el centro de atención de Navidad. María tiene un papel importante que desempeñar en la Encarnación de la Segunda Persona de la Santísima Trinidad. Ella acepta la invitación de Dios transmitida por el ángel (Lucas 1: 26-38). Elizabeth proclama: “Más bendita eres entre las muje-res y bendito es el fruto de tu vientre. ¿Y cómo me sucede esto, que la de Pablo de que "Dios envió el espíritu de su Hijo a nues-tros corazones, clamando" ¡Abba, Padre!
