What do innovation warriors mean to San Antonio?

Page 9: Sa innovaiton warrior

In 2012, San Antonio ranked No. 1 in Jobs, Wages & Tech !Ranked number 1 in economic growth and prosperity out of 200 metropolitan cities in America, San Antonio jumped 13 places to land the top spot on the Milken Index in 2011. Factoring jobs, wages and technology performance, San Antonio is leading the nation.

Many people are asking: Why San Antonio?

Page 10: Sa innovaiton warrior

In 1869, Sisters of Charity of the Incarnate Word journeyed from Galveston on a bumpy stagecoach ride to the Alamo city. Sisters St. Madeleine Chollet, St. Pierre Cinquin and St. Agnes Buisson were undaunted by a fire that

destroyed their first center. Determined, they opened Santa Rosa Infirmary, San Antonio’s first private hospital still operating today as Santa Rosa Hospital.

1869

Page 11: Sa innovaiton warrior

In 1879 the US Army opened a small medical dispensary, in a single story, wooden building. During the early years the Fort Sam Houston Post hospital was housed in temporary structures. The first permanent hospital was

built in 1886. In 1907, an 84 bed Station hospital was constructed on the west side of the Post. The Army medical presence would grow to become AMEDD, the U.S. Army's health care organization and massive construction

project yielding the San Antonio Military Medical Center in 2012.

San Antonio's original tourism economy was based on health resorts and chronic disease recovery from the late 1800s until it declined after World War I and prohibition. In 1853 the Bexar County Medical Society (BCMS) in San Antonio was the

first county medical society formed in the state of Texas. San Antonio's tourist economy began with medicine. Early examples include the Terrell Wells Preventorium, Hot Wells Lodges and Harlandale Hotel and Bath. The Hot Wells

Lodge was a lavish, four-story, 200-room, Victorian style, resort hotel. Built in 1886 along the San Antonio River on South Presa Street, Hot Wells featured pools, a bathhouse and spa fed by hot sulfur spring water (Moyer, 2009).

Jonathan Schmidt, Executive Vice-President, Business Development: Vice President of Advanced Product Development at Datapoint Corporation (1969-1985), where his core product development group created the industry's first commercial LAN (ARCNET). John Murphy, Senior Engineer: John has a wide range of experience, having worked at Motorola, Telex, and Singer, before joining Datapoint Corporation in the mid-1970s. John is known throughout the industry as the inventor of ARCNET, the world’s first commercial Local Area Network (LAN) topology, and has been honored by NASA for its use on the Space Shuttle. He also developed the Associated Index Method allowing high-speed ad hoc database searches, the first multi-user LAN-connected spreadsheet, high-performance, high-reliability server software, local area networking operating systems including their LAN communications protocols, and the firmware and BIOS for the first production Instant Internet for which he was awarded multiple patents. John holds a BS in Electrical Engineering from the University of Notre Dame. Henry Donzis, Senior Engineer: Henry joined Datapoint in 1974 and invented the first Local Area Network to be implemented on a broadband medium. He holds a patent on the facet-to-axis correction of the first LAN-connected laser printer and he also participated in the development of the first LAN optical link. Joining the initial Performance Technology team in 1985, he was responsible for producing tape backup systems, data conversion utilities, the first 16-bit ARCNET hardware, and an emulator for UNIX to be used by all Ford dealers in the UK. He developed the prototype and holds a patent for both the client and server of the first LAN-to-Internet gateway (Instant Internet),
