Would you like to become an Altar Server? We are having an information and training meeting for

girls and boys who wish to become altar servers. Servers must be in 4th grade or above in September 2015, and have received their First Communion. The meeting will be on Sat-urday, August 8, from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. in the church.

ISIS and the Fate of the Churches of the Middle East

Fr. John Monestero will be presenting a series of two lectures en-titled “Isis and the Fate of the Churches of the Middle East.” Some of the topics to be covered will be:

—Who are the Christians in the Middle East? —What is ISIS? —The civil war in Syria and the Christian Churches. —The Christians in Egypt. —The crisis of the Churches of the Middle East. —What can we do to help?

This will be presented on Thursdays, August 20 and 27 from 7-9 p.m. in the Youth Room.

Looking for Sacred Heart Mission History In 1976, Sacred Heart Mission celebrated it's 50th anniversary. An

album commemorating this was prepared and published, which in-cluded photos of residents of the Sacred Heart / Independencia commu-nity. The parish does not have a copy of this. Does anyone have this book that they would be willing to donate to the parish, or one that we could copy so that we could have it for our archives.

St. Justin has an ongoing archive collection of historical parish photos and information. If you have any photos, memorabilia, informa-tion, etc, that you would like to donate for our archives we would be happy to have it. Couples for Christ Family Ministry is presenting the Christian Life Program

The Christian Life Program will be having a series of talks beginning Fri-day, August 7, at 7 p.m. in room B of the Parish Center, and will continue for 10 Fridays. The Christian Life Program (CLP) is a spiritual journey intended to lead families into a renewed understanding of God’s call to us as Christians. It is an international Catholic lay ecclesial movement whose goal is to renew and strengthen Christian family life and values. The CLP is open to all married couples, single men and women, widows, widowers, divorced and single par-ents. This Christian Life Program stays true to the Couples for Christ theme for 2015 which is to “Love More”. By that, we sincerely mean to:

- to love more our God and faithfully obey His Commandments, - to love more our Church that Jesus Christ instituted, and continue to pro-

mote, defend and live by her teachings, - to love more our children and the younger generation and pass on to them

God's truth on marriage, - to love more our brethren with opposing views and treat them with respect,

justice and pastoral care, - to love more by not being indifferent or passive, but instead by being the

light for Christ in this world that seeks to destroy the basic unit of soci-ety, the family.

The members of Couples for Christ have committed themselves to the Lord and to one another that they may continue to grow in spiritual maturity as men and women of God and fulfill their primary vocation of raising up families under the Lordship of Jesus Christ and for the service of the Kingdom of God.

GOD'S WORK We are so busy! Most of us have more than one

job to do, and we never seem to have enough time. We are workers, volunteers, parents, friends, and most of us are more than one thing at a time. But which of these is the work of God?

We seldom view our ordinary work as being the work of God. We may think that we have to be minis-ters or priests, missionaries or charity workers, en-gaged full-time in works formally identified as being "God's work." But everything we do with a faithful heart and with love for others is God's work. We each have our own role to fill in the world, and many gifts are necessary. We cannot always see the direct con-nection of our daily work to the plan of God. But we trust and we believe that God leads us to do what is needed, where it is needed. What is "God's work?" Treasures from our Tradition Customs surrounding wedding rites are often in

tension with our liturgical tradition. Sometimes prac-tices are almost forced on engaged couples. Anyone who has ever planned a wedding knows how quickly the invoices expand. A hundred dollars here, a hun-dred there, often for non-essentials, when more deeply traditional practices, like an expression of charity for the poor, fall by the wayside. One such practice often labeled as "deeply traditional" is the aisle runner for the bride. Actually, the American tradition is to clean our church buildings, in contrast to European village churches, which often had dirt or cobblestone floors. There, a band of linen (rented) or a carpet of flowers might be set in place for a bridal party. Here, plastic roll-ups are procured and posi-tioned by the ushers for the bride's entrance. The problems are many, not the least of which is that there is no "bride's entrance" in our official liturgy. Another is that in a wedding Mass, the communicants have to navigate the treacherous aisle with the sometimes-slippery runner. The aisle runner is neither a treasure nor a tradition, and by omitting it, the couple who asks for canned goods for the poor to be brought to church at their wedding Mass will find an extra hun-dred dollars or so for the cause! --Rev. A. Pearson. Within this historic 19 acres, you will find many landmarks of the park including a beautiful amphitheater and ballfield stadium grandstand, both built in 1927, as well as the remarkable cactus and water gardens created in 1921 by Mr. Rudy Boysen, Father of the “Boysenberry.”

All parking is on the right side of the street. You can park along Sycamore (by the ponds), Lemon (by the amphitheater), or Cypress (by the tennis courts and pool). The playground is in the center of the park.

Health Awareness Expo Anaheim’s St. Anthony Claret Church is having a Health Awareness Expo on August

9 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. This will be an opportunity for some free health services and be educated by various doctors and other medical professionals on how to better take care of your health needs. Buscamos la Historia de la Misión del Sagrado Corazón En 1976, la Misión del Sagrado Corazón celebró su 50 aniversario. Un

álbum de fotografías fue preparado y publicado conmemorando este momen-to, lo cual incluía fotografías de los residentes de la comunidad del Sagrado Corazón / Independencia. Esta parroquia no tiene una copia de esto. Si algu-no de ustedes tiene este libro y lo quisieran donar a la parroquia, o también podríamos hacer una copia del libro para incluirlo en nuestros archivos.

San Justino tiene una colección en desarrollo de archivos de colección historial de la parroquia que incluye fotos e información. Reflexiones para la Homilía Muchas veces nos cansamos de algo que habíamos deseado mucho.

La poesía de Jorge Manrique lo expresa muy bien: “como, a nuestro pare-cer, cualquier tiempo pasado, fue mejor”. Así podemos soñar o idealizar el pasado, que quizá no fuera tan bueno. Como los israelitas en el desierto. En Egipto habían sido esclavos, explotados y oprimidos. Cuando tienen una oportunidad de liberarse, la aprovechan; pero enseguida empiezan a añorar las cebollas de Egipto. No recuerdan lo que sufrieron, sólo por pensar en el pasado. A eso, Dios no responde retirándoles incluso los sue-ños o haciendo su vida peor, sino explicando claramente la diferencia entre el pan de Egipto, el pan del desierto y el pan de Vida, que es Cristo mismo. Dios les da el pan del cielo —un pan que supera con creces el pan de la esclavitud—. Ese pan, a pesar de ser el pan de una bendición, aún es material y perecedero. Es un pan que no se puede guardar de un día para otro. Ayuda a la vida corporal, pero no da vida verdadera.

El pan de Cristo, que es el pan de la eucaristía, es muy distinto. Es un pan que alimenta para siempre, porque, al ser el propio Cuerpo y Sangre de Cristo, nos ofrece una vida distinta y duradera, la vida de los salvados, los liberados; la vida de los hijos de Dios. Los israelitas fueron liberados de una esclavitud material. Nosotros somos liberados, por el Cuerpo y la Sangre de Cristo, de la esclavitud del pecado, de nuestras malas costum-bres y disposiciones. Nos hacemos personas verdaderamente libres, dignas como hijos de Dios; por eso, como nos dice san pablo en la segunda lectu-ra, tenemos que “andar vestidos” de otra manera; es decir, ser imitadores de Jesús, hacer sus obras, andar en la luz de la verdad, la honestidad, la dignidad. En lugar de mirar a un pasado que quizá nos ofreciera algún placer o comodidad pasajeros, pero no una verdadera libertad, miremos al presente en que Cristo se nos da todo entero, con toda su gracia para lu-char contra el mal y la muerte.

Para la reflexión: ¿Hay alguna cosa de la que te sientas esclavizado? ¿Añoras a veces un pasado que te ofrecía una cierta seguridad, pero en el que no eras verdaderamente feliz? ¿Qué supone para ti ser un nuevo ser en Cristo? ¿Qué cosas deberías cambiar en tu vida?

Reflexiones sobre la Palabra Verdadero pan del cielo

Éxodo 16:2-4, 12-15 Después de un tiempo de haber salido de Egipto, la gente empieza a cansarse del viaje e inician una protes-ta. Extrañan las mínimas comodidades que tenían en Egipto, aunque allí no tuvieran libertad. Se irritan contra sus líderes. La salida de Egipto era el evento que había convertido a este grupo en un pueblo en relación con Dios, pero ahora se rebelan contra esto. esto es casi un rechazo total del Dios que los ha librado. Uno se esperaría que Dios reaccionase airado ante esta crítica, pero lo que hace Dios es darles pan en abundancia. el don del pan que vino del cielo se menciona en dos comentarios distintos en otras páginas de la Biblia. en el evangelio, la multiplicación de los panes es una imagen del pan del cielo auténtico: es el mismo Cristo quien se da como comida en la eucaristía. Hay cuatro man-datos en el contexto del suministro del alimento: cada uno debe recoger sólo lo que necesita para comer. Nadie debe guardar para el día siguiente. Se reserva el día séptimo como día consagrado a Dios y se conserva algo del maná como testimonio para las gene-raciones venideras.

Efesios 4:17, 20-24 Las primeras comunidades cristianas, en medio de un ambiente pagano, tenían que demostrar otro modo de vivir. Pablo les pide un corte radical con su pasado. Para ello, habla en términos de luz y tinieblas y usa como símbolos de al-ternativas, el vestirse y desnudarse. La humanidad vieja lleva un traje viejo, de tinieblas. La nueva es una nueva creación, revesti-da de Cristo. Los cristianos vivían a menudo en grandes ciudades donde existía una enorme degeneración moral. Las perversiones y los vicios más vergonzosos eran imperantes y eran comporta-mientos normales y aceptados. El ser según Dios es la persona hecha a imagen y semejanza de Dios. La vestidura blanca, lumi-nosa, que se ponen los cristianos, es símbolo de la vida nueva que están comenzando. Pablo indica los requisitos para tal vida: sin-ceridad, sobriedad, limpieza de lenguaje. Esta exhortación está hecha al estilo de una enseñanza sapiencial. En tal tradición, los contrastes se hacen muy claros. Sólo hay dos opciones: vivir la vida por el camino recto o por el camino de la maldad. La nueva vida de los cristianos exige un cambio radical. Deben dejar atrás su antiguo ser y ponerse la vestidura de Cristo. El vestido es un índice de personalidad. Indica el puesto en la sociedad. Pablo lo utiliza como metáfora de identidad. Es la novedad del nuevo cielo y la nueva tierra, del nuevo espíritu, el nuevo vino, la nueva Jerusalén.

Juan 6:24-35 Se explora aquí la verdadera identidad de Jesús. Jesús es el pan de vida que se comparte en la eucaristía, y es tam-bién la palabra de vida que se recibe por la fe y que alimenta la fe. el discurso de Jesús sobre el pan de vida sigue el método de interpretación rabínica. Primero se cita un pasaje de la escritura. Luego se da el análisis. A la gente se le había dado comida sin tener que trabajar por ella. Jesús utiliza la imagen para comunicar una enseñanza profunda: el trabajo material sólo da pan material; pero, para conseguir el pan del que habla Jesús, el pan de vida, se necesita otro tipo de trabajo. La obra de Dios es la fe en Jesús. Eso les resulta como mucho pedir a la gente que lo escucha. Dios en el Desierto dio pan del cielo. ¿Qué ofrece Jesús?

Nuestra cultura Muchos de nosotros salimos de nuestros países en busca de

un mundo mejor. Pedimos pan, y pedimos oportunidades; y tene-mos razón en pedirlas, pero a veces no aprovechamos las oportu-nidades que se nos presentan de una mejora de educación, por ejemplo. ¿Cuántas veces no hemos oído de clases de inglés o de GED que se han suspendido por falta de asistencia de quienes precisamente las pedían? Soñamos a veces con el pasado, como si fuera mejor, y eso nos impide ver todo lo que se nos ha dado.

Dichos y dichos…. Hay dichos y hay dichos. Yo soy un inmigrante de ecuador y el

inglés es mi segundo idioma. Tuve que aprender los dichos en inglés, tales como: “Ojos que no ve, corazón que no siente” o “De tal palo, tal astilla”. He escuchado muchos dichos estos años; algunos buenos y otros que me han dado ganas de correr. Recuerdo una vez cuando aún no sabía bien inglés y tuve que ir a la farmacia a comprar medicinas. Me acerqué a la cajera y con mi inglés chapurrado le pregunté: “Habla español?” Me miró con desdén y más o menos entendí que me decía: “es estúpido que estés aquí en estados Unidos y no hables inglés”. También ese día aprendí lo que wetback (espalda mojada) significaba. Hay dichos y hay dichos.

Mi mejor amigo perdió su padre hace algunos meses. Me imagino su sentir al escuchar esas duras palabras: “Tu padre ha muerto”. Su papá murió en ecuador y mi amigo no pudo estar allí para el último respiro de su padre. Continuara…………

El primer lunes de cada mes, aquellas personas de edad avanzada, con una enfermedad seria, salud en decadencia, o si van a tener una cirugía están invitados a asistir a la misa de las 7 p.m. en la Misión Sagrado Corazón. Durante la misa podrán recibir el Sacramento de la Unción de los Enfermos. Este mes la Unción será el 3 de agosto.
