TODAY'S READINGS First Reading -- Jesus tells the disciples that they will be witnesses to the ends of the earth (Acts 1:1-11). Psalm -- God mounts his throne to shouts of joy: a blare of trumpets for the Lord (Psalm 47). Second Reading -- May the Father of glory give you a Spirit of wisdom and revelation (Ephesians 1:17-23).

The Vigil of Pentecost Mass Saturday, June 3 at 7 p.m.

On June 3rd at our parish’s first ever Vigil Mass for Pentecost, the Sacrament of Confirmation will be bestowed on adults from our parish who have been preparing to re-

ceive the sacrament. They, like the apostles before them, will be receiving the gift of Pen-tecost, the gifts of the Holy Spirit. “Send your Holy Spirit upon them to be their helper and guide. Give them the spirit of wisdom and understanding, the spirit of right judgment and courage, the spirit of knowledge and reverence. Fill them with the spirit of wonder and awe in your presence.” The Rite of Confirmation

The word Pentecost is Greek and means “50th day.” Fifty days after Easter Sunday, we celebrate Pentecost, the coming of the Holy Spirit upon the apostles, his mother Mary, and other followers of Jesus. Tradition says this marks the birthday of the Church.

At Pentecost, the apostles, led by Peter, were gathered in a room. What happened there is described in the Acts of the Apostles 2:2-6

And suddenly there came from the sky a noise like a strong driving wind, and it filled the entire house in which they were. Then there appeared to them tongues as of fire, which parted and came to rest on each one of them. And they were all filled with the holy Spirit and began to speak in different tongues, as the Spirit enabled them to proclaim. Now there were devout Jews from every nation under heaven staying in Jerusalem. At this sound, they gathered in a large crowd, but they were confused because each one heard them speaking in his own language.

When the Holy Spirit descended upon the apostles, they were granted the gifts of the Holy Spirit. From that point on the apostles began their ministry to carry the message of Christ, to preach the Gospel, and make disciples of all nations.

This Mass will be longer than our usual Saturday Mass, as it is bilingual, and has 3 additional readings and Responsorial Psalms, and the adults in our parish who have been studying to receive the Sacrament of Confirmation will be confirmed during this Mass.

Note on this day, June 3, our 5:30 p.m. English Mass WILL BE CANCELLED,

and we invite everyone to attend the 7 p.m. Mass which will be BILINGUAL.

Treasures from our Tradition If you could somehow transport a third-century

Christian into your twenty-first-century Sunday Mass, once the initial shock wore off he or she would be more or less at home with the structure of the first part of the liturgy, the Word. The second part might be more diffi-cult to comprehend. The stumbling block would be the book. We have a book, a missal that is set down on the altar with a very precisely prescribed set of words for the priest to say and the people to sing at the Eucharis-tic Prayer. In the early days of the church, there were no set "formulas" for this prayer. The ancients would have raised eyebrows at our "bookishness" since they preferred to let the prayers roll forth from a gifted leader of prayer. There was a basic shape to the prayer of thanksgiving, and almost general agreement that the words of Christ at the Last Supper ought to be in-cluded.

By the second century, Justin Martyr wrote that the presider "gives thanks at some length . . . and when he has finished the prayers and the thanksgiving, all the people present give their assent by saying 'Amen.' " In the world before books, people could memorize long passages of prose and poetry, and so it is easy to see how particular phrases or expressions passed from church to church. --Rev. Happy Feast Day St. Justin Martyr Parish!

Thursday, June 1, is the Feast of our patron, St. Justin Martyr

Justin was born in Flavia Neapolis, in modern day Israel, around the year 100-114. His parents were pagans and of Greek origin. They were wealthy and able to provide him with a first-class education. This thirst for knowledge led him to apply him-self to the study of philosophy. Justin attached himself first to one system of philosophy, then another, but none of these were able to completely satisfy his thirst for God. Eventually his search led him to Christianity.

Convinced of this as the one true faith, he was baptized and began teaching and writing about Christianity.

The principal facts of Justin’s life are gathered from his own writings. Although many of Justin’s writings have perished, his surviving writings are among the most important that have come down to us from the second century. St. Justin is the patron of philosophers, apologists, and lecturers.

Since 1958 the statue of St. Justin (above) has stood on the roof over the doors of our church facing Ball Road. It was designed by one of our founding parishioners, Shirley Horger, and commissioned by our new pastor Fr. Hugh O’Connor. He is holding a book and a feather quill pen because he is a writer, and he wears the sash of a philosopher. The cost was $400.

The icon of Saint Justin Martyr (above, right) on display in Saint Justin Martyr Church, is an original and was created in Alaska especially for our parish and in-stalled in 1999. There is no other icon like it in the world.

The icon shows Justin in heaven, surrounded by panels depicting his life. The panels are read from left to right, beginning at the top. The top border illustrates his search for the truth in the various philosophies of his time. The side borders tell the story of his conversion, baptism, his teachings and writings, and his trial. The bottom border illustrates Justin’s condemnation, martyrdom, and burial.

Prayer to St. Justin Father, as your Spirit guides us and your loving care keeps us safe, be close to us and form us in the image of your son. May the fire of your Spirit, which filled the heart of St. Justin Martyr with courage and love, encourage us to witness and proclaim the gospel in all we say and do. We ask this through Christ our Lord.

New altar server albs needed. We still need over $2000.

Every donation of any size is appreciated. Many of you may have noticed that the albs that our altar serv-ers are wearing have “seen better days.” They have all been washed and worn countless times over the years, and they are showing their age. We would like to purchase 36 new ones in assorted children’s and adult sizes in the style shown at left. Their cost ranges from $86 to $110 each depending on the size. We are asking once again for our generous parishioners to help sponsor our Altar Server Ministry by donating towards new albs. If you choose to make a donation, please place it in an envelope that is clearly marked “Altar Server Albs.” In the past our parish-ioners have donated towards a number of special appeals such as

this, and we hope you will once again help us. We all look forward to seeing our serv-ers in our new albs and thank all those who will make this possible.

Misa de Vigilia de Pentecostés Sabado, 3 de Junio, a las 7 p.m. (bilinguë)

El 3 de junio durante en la primera misa de Vigilia de Pentecostés, el Sacramento de Confirmación será ofrecida a los adultos de nuestra parroquia que se han estado preparando para recibir el sacramento. Ellos, como los apóstoles antes de ellos, recibirán el rega-lo de Pentecostés, los dones del Espíritu Santo.

“Envía sobre ellos tu Espíritu Santo para que sea su ayuda y guía. Dales el espíritu de sabiduría y de inteligencia, el espíritu de consejo y de fortaleza, el espíritu de ciencia y de piedad. Cólmalos del espíritu de tu santo temor y de reverencia en tu presencia”. Rito de Confirmación

La palabra Pentecostés es Griega y quiere decir el “50 día”. Cincuenta días después del Domingo de Pascua, celebramos Pente-costés, la venida del Espíritu Santo sobre los apóstoles, su madre María, y otros seguidores de Jesús. La Tradición dice que esto mar-ca el nacimiento de la Iglesia.

En Pentecostés, los apóstoles, dirigidos por Pedro, estaban reunidos en un cuarto. Lo que sucedió allí esta descrito en los Hechos de los Apóstoles 2:2-6:

De repente vino del cielo un ruido, semejante a una ráfaga de viento impetuoso, y llenó toda la casa donde se encontraban. Entonces aparecieron lenguas como de fuego, que se repartían y se posaban sobre cada uno de ellos. Todos quedaron llenos del Espíritu Santo y comenzaron a hablar en lenguas extrañas, según el Espíritu los movía a expresarse.

Se encontraban por entonces en Jerusalén judíos piadosos venidos de todas las naciones de la tierra. Al oír el ruido, acudie-ron en masa y quedaron desconcertados, porque cada uno los oía hablar en su propia lengua. Cuando el Espíritu Santo descendió sobre los apóstoles, se les concedieron los dones

del Espíritu Santo. Desde este punto los apóstoles comenzaron su ministerio de llevar el mensaje de Cristo, de predicar el Evangelio, y hacer discípulos a todas las naciones. Pedro comenzó su ministerio como el primer Papa de la Iglesia al llamar a todos los presentes a ser bautizados. Esos 3,000 nuevos bautizados fueron de los primeros Católicos. Noten que este día, 3 de junio, la misa de 5:30 p.m. en Ingles ESTARÁ CANCELADA,

y los invitamos a todos a asistir a la misa de 7 p.m. lo cual será BILINGÜE. Esta misa será más larga que nuestra misa de sábado, tiene 3 lecturas adicionales y Salmos Responsoriales, y los adultos en nuestra parroquia que han estado estudiando para recibir el Sacramento de Confirmación serán confirmados durante esta misa.

REFLEXIONES SOBRE LA PALABRA Conocer a Jesús Hechos 1:12-14 En este resumen de los Hechos, se da una prime-ra mirada a los comienzos de la iglesia bajo el liderazgo de los apóstoles. Estos resúmenes son como paradas narrativas entre los diversos episodios de su libro. Conectan con lo anteriormente narrado y nos dan las claves para interpretar lo que sigue. Lucas nos presenta aquí el núcleo original de la iglesia constituida por tres grupos: los 11, las mujeres y la familia de Jesús. Lo mismo que al inicio de su evangelio, sitúa en un lugar destacado a María. Con este primer informe comienza la segunda etapa de prepara-ción para la venida del Espíritu que está dedicada a la oración. 1 Pedro 4:13-16 El discípulo subraya la seriedad de su exhorta-ción con la inminencia del fin del universo, cuando venga Jesucris-to a juzgar según el Evangelio, tanto a los que aún estén con vida como a los que hayan muerto. No se trata de una inminencia de días o años, sino de la urgencia del cambio que lleva el mensaje evangélico. Los servicios propuestos merecen la atención del discípulo: el servicio de la Palabra y la atención a los necesitados. Juan 17:1-11A El objetivo de la vida de Jesús se cumple ahora, en el momento de su victoria. El concepto semítico de conoci-miento era intimidad y unión con la persona conocida. Los seres humanos son capaces de una unión íntima con Dios, porque cono-cen al hijo. Algunos han visto esta oración como el testamento de Jesús a los suyos. Su objetivo es la unión y comunión de los discí-pulos con Jesús y con el Padre. Jesús puede dar gracias al Padre, porque ha llevado a cabo su misión y los discípulos han creído. Da también gracias por ellos que están en el mundo. Estos son los mismos discípulos que dentro de unas horas lo abandonarán por debilidad humana. En el centro de la oración, Jesús desea que el gozo y la alegría sean una característica permanente de los suyos.

Nuestra cultura: Cuando conocemos bien a una persona, la con-sideramos de la familia, aunque no esté emparentada con nosotros. La familia se extiende a amigos, vecinos y colegas. Familia y co-munidad son casi sinónimas.

La comprensión de la Biblia La Biblia es todo lo que nos rodea. Las personas escuchan

lecturas de la Escritura en la iglesia. Tenemos leyes del Buen Sa-maritano (Lucas 10), la bienvenida a casa del hijo pródigo (Lucas 15), y buscar la tierra prometida (Éxodo 3, Hebreos 11). Algunos pasajes bíblicos se han convertido máximas populares, como "Haz a los demás como te gustaría que te hicieran a ti (Mateo 7:12)", "No robarás (Éxodo 20:15), y 'ama a tu prójimo' (Mateo 22:39).

Católica de hoy está llamada a tener un acercamiento espiri-tual inteligente a la Biblia.

A continuación se enumeran 10 puntos para la lectura de la Escritura fructífera. 1. Lectura de la Biblia es para los católicos. La Iglesia anima a los católicos para que la lectura de la Biblia parte de su vida diaria de oración. La lectura de estas palabras inspiradas, las personas profundizan en su relación con Dios y llegan a comprender su lugar en la comunidad que Dios les ha llamado para sí. 2. La oración es el principio y el fin. La lectura de la Biblia no es como leer una novela o un libro de historia. Se debe comenzar con una oración pidiendo al Espíritu Santo que abra nuestros corazones y mentes a la Palabra de Dios. Lectura de la Escritura debe termi-nar con una oración para que esta Palabra dé fruto en nuestras vidas, que nos ayuda a ser más santos y más fieles. 3. Obtener toda la historia! Al seleccionar una Biblia, busque una edición católica. La edición católica incluye la lista completa de la Iglesia de los libros sagrados, junto con introducciones y notas para la comprensión del texto. Una edición Católica tendrá un visto bueno previo aviso en la parte posterior de la portada. Una impronta indica que el libro está libre de errores en la doctrina católica. Continuara…

Reflexiones para la homilía Conocemos muchas veces a muchas personas y no siempre es para bien. A

veces el conocimiento nos lleva al amor y otras veces a la indiferencia, a la sospecha o incluso al odio; pero lo que es cierto siempre es que no se puede amar lo que no se conoce; por lo tanto, no se puede amar a Jesús si no se conoce bien quién es, qué hizo y todas sus palabras.

¿En qué consiste conocer a Jesús? Hay muchas formas de conocer cosas. Se conoce con la mente, como cuando se acumulan conceptos, datos e ideas. Se puede estudiar para un examen o una prueba de trabajo; pero ese conocimiento, con lo importante que es y lo que puede cambiar el curso de una vida, normal-mente no toca a lo más profundo de la persona.

Podemos conocer la figura de Jesús estudiando en libros sobre el personaje histórico, su tiempo e incluso sus palabras y obras, sin llegar, sin embargo, a conocer personalmente al Jesús vivo. Conocer a Jesús es haber tenido un en-cuentro con Él, de tal manera que los ojos de la mente y el corazón comprendan y lleguen a amar apasionadamente a Cristo. Esto significa reconocer también su unión con el Padre. Eso es precisamente lo que Cristo vino a hacer a la tierra. Entrar en un conocimiento tan profundo, que todos se hagan uno con Él. ¿Para qué? Para que todos gocen de la misma gloria, es decir, la alegría perfecta de estar con Dios.

En este mundo hay muchas pruebas, sufrimientos y angustias; pero quie-nes conocen a Cristo saben muy bien que lo que tienen sobrepasa, por mucho, todo lo que pueda pasar en la tierra. Quienes conocen a Cristo saben que vida y muerte, asumidas por Cristo al venir al mundo, han sido totalmente transforma-das. Por la venida de Jesús, por su muerte y sobre todo, por su resurrección, sabemos que nuestra humanidad se ha transformado y liberado.

Conocer a Cristo es saber internamente esa entrega de Cristo que nos da vida y que nos salva. Conocer a Cristo, por tanto, es mucho más que un conoci-miento intelectual; supone para nosotros un amor tan profundo, que nos lleva a vivir como Él: en servicio a los demás, en entrega incluso con el sacrificio pro-pio, en la esperanza de la resurrección, y en la alegría profunda e intensa de pertenecer a Dios. Conocer a Jesús es entrar en su intimidad, unirse profunda-mente.
