FLOWERS FOR THE ALTAR

The Altar Flowers, week by week, are a welcome offering to our worship. Flowers are alive. They are of God’s creation.

They are a fragrant offering to the God who created them. They are a symbol of new life in Christ. For these reasons, it’s important to have fresh flowers in our church each week. We give thanks to everyone who is moved to donate to-wards flowers for the week. If you want to donate for the flowers to beautify the Church, you can drop an envelope in the collection basket marked “flowers”. The only envelopes that are sent out specifically for flow-ers are for Easter and Christmas, these will remain the same.

Supporting Catholic Education Have you ever wondered how you as a parish member can support Catholic Education? We are often asked about the needs of St. Mary and how people can help. Here’s some-thing to consider: Last year St. Mary earned over $100,000 from Sunday night bingo thanks to the over 2500 volunteer hours given to sup-port the program. Bingo survives because of volunteers—from the caller and pull tab workers to the cleanup crew! We need volunteers in multiple bingo roles. Please consider giving of your time to St. Mary by volunteering in our bingo program. St. Mary is sustained by tuition, ongoing fundraising (Auction—Nov 2019, Bingo, Annual Fund, Trivia, etc.), and donor dollars to pay salaries and operate the school. Bingo is a large piece of our ongoing fundraising to sustain reasonable tuition rates. Catholic education grows God’s Kingdom and the Catholic Church; we trust you will join us in our mission. Please call or email Robin Mowers to inquire about volunteer opportunities or to add your name to the list of our bingo volunteers. 270 442-1681 x.224 or [email protected]

St. Mary invites everyone to our back-to-school bash and alumni soccer game.

The Transfiguration of the Lord

The Feast of the Transfiguration is celebrated on August 6th of every year and it is featured during the Lenten sea-son, on the Second Sunday of Lent. Our Lord’s appearance changed! The three Gospel narratives tell us that the Lord Jesus’ “face shone like the sun,” (Matthew 17:2); and “the appearance of His counte-nance was altered” (Luke 9:29). Each narrative tells us that Our Lord’s clothing changed: “His garments became white as light” (Matthew 17:2); “glistening, intensely white, as no fuller on earth could bleach them” (Mark 9:3); “and His raiment became dazzling white” (Luke 9:29). Like most Jews of the time, the Apostles mistakenly be-lieved that the blessings to be brought by the Messiah or Christ would be earthly or material blessings. As in the time of King David, the Messiah was supposed to bring freedom from foreign domination; there would be a return to a golden age of material prosperity like the times when David and Solomon ruled. When Jesus had already be-gun to prepare His disciples for His impending death by revealing that He would suffer (Matthew 16:21), the Apos-tles rejected this revelation. By means of His Transfigura-tion Christ wanted to teach them that God’s Christ would give them more than earthly happiness, political independ-ence or material prosperity. Our Lord wanted them to learn that He would come to His glory through suffering and Death, in order to bring them the better happiness of freedom from sin and the grace of everlasting life. The Transfiguration was to teach them and us that we will come to share in Christ’s glory in the same way and that ultimate happiness cannot be measured in earthly terms. The Transfiguration also “gives us a foretaste of Christ’s glorious coming, when He will change your lowly body to be like His glorious body” (Philippians 3:21). The Transfiguration also reminds us that “it is through many persecutions that we must enter the Kingdom of God” (Acts 14:22; Cf. CCC, 556).

Thinking about Separation or Divorce?

Is your marriage or that of a relative or friend heading for divorce? Do you know how to save that marriage? Or do you feel helpless? Retrouvaille (pronounced retro-vi with a long i) is designed to help troubled marriages regain their health. It helps spouses uncover or re-awaken the love, trust and commitment that originally brought them together. The program is highly successful in saving hurting marriages, even bringing reconciliation to couples who have already separated or divorced. For confidential information about or to register for the August program beginning with a weekend on Aug. 16, 2019, call Felicia at 270 929-1524, or the Family Life Office at 270-683-1545 or visit the web site at www.retrouvaille.org. Registration deadline Aug. 9, 2019.
