Apology: I somehow managed to miss off Lizzie Haines’ contact details from her fabulous Jubilee Cake featured last month, which was a hit with one reader, Helen Swift: “I loved the feature on the Jubilee cake. I wasn’t planning to do anything for the festival other than collapse

in front of the TV, but your photos inspired me. I did have a strong red food colour but not a blue, so yes the middle layer is a bit ‘green’. It tasted great as well, and was eaten by three

generations as we watched the flotilla at Grandma’s house.” So for any more creative ideas or professional photography please contact Lizzie Haines at www.doitmomma.co.uk, or [email protected].

I would also like to pay tribute to the swinging horseshoe trees designed by 14 local Primary Schools for the Queen’s Golden Jubilee. The Pop Up Art project was inspired by sculptor Mo Gardner, who was honoured recently as one of her sculptures was donated to the Queen at Burghley House on behalf of the County of Rutland. The Horse Shoe project was supported by Travis Perkins, who supplied all the MDF free of charge and sculptor Graham Biggs who gave generously of his time and expertise by cutting out around one hundred and fifty varying sized horseshoes. Fantastic and well done!

Please do keep me informed of all your achievements as we continue to celebrate our local communities.

This month students and staff from the Rutland County College, Oakham get ready to move to the luxurious new premises in Barleythorpe

The RUTLAND CoUnTy College

With recent controversy and political upheaval, The Rutland County College

continues to thrive with its ‘Outstanding’ OFSTED and a 50% increase in applications for September 2012. The college has always maintained excellent results and last year 78% of students achieved a C or above at A2 and 20% got an A, well above the Government’s expectations.

The new site at Barleythorpe, a beautiful renovation of the former conference centre, has been designed by architects well-known locally for the fabulous Oakham C of E new build. The campus has been designed around a village theme, true to the Rutland Spirit with warmth, art and trees in the corridors and every room is named after a place in Rutland.

In their farewell speeches Jacob Jones, the student President, said “The college is a great place to learn with small class sizes and teachers who really care” and Hannah Mae Wilkinson, executive committee and nominated most intellectual student, added that she would “recommend it to anyone”.

The Hand Stitched Theatre CompanyA theatre company that has grown out of past and present students of the college has recently enjoyed success with ‘Art’ at the Oakham Festival. The students have also triumphed at The Edinburg festival since 2009 and are looking forward to taking another version of ‘Romeo and Juliet’ (**** Three Weeks Magazine Edinburgh 2011) to Edinburgh this August. They are still looking for funding! Tel: 07859 027341

Students Enjoy a Second Successful business EventCouncillor Roger Begy was the guest speaker at the second successful Business Breakfast

event hosted by Year 13 BTEC National Business students at the Rutland County College recently. In his speech to the students and 28 businesses present, Councillor Begy commented on the importance of continuing to learn throughout life and always asking ourselves, “Why am I doing this, who is it for, what can I learn from it?”

So why did the students host a business breakfast? Jacob Harris leader of the presentation group said, “This is the culmination of two years of coursework on the BTEC Business course. We wanted to put all of the skills we have learned into practice in this the final unit, the Business Event.” Charlotte Maiden, responsible for administering the event commented, “It also gave us the opportunity to network with local businesses and to bridge the gap between business and education.”

All 28 businesses were invited to enjoy a free breakfast provided by

the students and to view a presentation on how the

BTEC National Business

course equips students with the relevant skills required by local businesses. During the question and answer session the students were able to share their aspirations for the future and demonstrated the different routes they will be taking. Racha Hussein said, “My ambition is to become a PA and the apprenticeship route is right for me as I would like to be able to learn whilst working.”

The presentation ended with a look at the new college site at Barleythorpe and the courses Rutland County College will be offering in September 2012.

The feedback from the businesses has been extremely positive and encouraging with three students being offered the opportunity to apply for business apprenticeships on the day. Enquiries about courses can be found at www.rutlandcountycollege.com or by Tel: 01572 722863• To find out more contact the college and if you want to sign up simply fill in the taster day form which can be accessed at reception or online at www.rutlandcountycollege.com

All new and potential

applicants are invited to a very special Freshers’ Taster Day on Tuesday 3rd July at Rutland County College. The day will offer sample lessons, an opportunity to meet teachers and make new friends and then an afternoon ‘Party in the Park’ with street performers, BBQ and optional fancy dress for all staff and students with the theme ‘Celebrating Sport’ as we will be able to watch the Olympic Torch procession pass the college that afternoon.

GARDENING

12 RUTLAND & MARKET HARBOROUGH LIVING JUly 2012

Creating a REsILIENT retreat

It’s a familiar story; the weather is either too cold and wet and plants struggle to grow

or too sunny and dry and we spend our days watering plants that may go over too quickly. Every year we have the same unpredictable weather in this country and a pattern of it being dry 6 weeks without any rain can take its toll on our more traditional garden plants, such as roses, delphiniums and lupins which benefit from a lot of moisture. This July why not look at more drought tolerant planting, plants that can cope with long periods of dryness and ensure an easier and more successful gardening calendar.

Whilst at the moment we don’t normally suffer from bad droughts here, by encouraging good gardening practice we will be preparing for the occasional very dry summers and helping our gardens become more resilient to our inconsistent weather.

CREAtING A moRE REsIlIENt GARDENChoosing the right plants to suit our growing conditions is essential. Despite a lot of rain early in the summer, climate change presents us with the challenge of gardening with less water. With some conditioning of the soil and careful watering, there is a considerable range of plants that can tolerate dry conditions once they are established.

YouNG plANtsPlant new plants when they are still small so they fill a space naturally and get used to their growing environment gradually as they develop. They gain a much greater resilience by adapting to their conditions from a young age. Autumn or Spring planting is ideal, the roots will become established before dry weather arrives.

ImpRovE thE soIlImproving the structure of the soil by digging in large amounts of garden compost, manure or other organic material is especially important. It will help cultivate the soil structure assisting in water retention and drainage, making the water more available to plants.

Owen Morgan, Rutland based RHS award winning garden designer, www.mosaicgardens.co.uk, looks at creating more resilient gardens

mulChAdding a layer of mulch after planting is one of the most effective ways of limiting water loss from the the soil allowing new plants to establish successfully. A thorough watering, ideally from recycled water, throughout a plant’s first season is essential. Once a plant is properly established it will soon become more drought tolerant.

IDEAl plANtINGTo reflect as much sun as possible, many arid loving plants have silver or grey-green leaves, such as Lavender. A large proportion have hairy leaves or stems to trap any moisture in the air. Below is a selection of plants with good drought-tolerant properties.

smAll shRubs• Artemisia ‘Powis Castle’ - light fern-like aromatic leaves with tiny yellow/silver flowers in August• Santolina chamaecyparissus (Cotton Lavender) - tiny leaves and light reflective silver colouring reduces water loss• Lavender (Lavandula angustifolia ‘Hidcote’) - classic full hardy English Lavender good for pollinating insects

ClImbERs• Passionflower (Passiflora caerulea ‘Constance Elliott’) - exotic looking plant, with dark green glossy leaves and unusual, fragrant, large white flowers from July to September• Solanum crispum ‘Glasnevin’ - Chilean potato tree with deep purple/blue scented blooms

pERENNIAls • Euphorbia characias subsp. wulfenii - huge heads of chartreuse-green flowers• Eryngium giganteum (Miss Willmott’s ghost) - ruff of spiky bracts and cone-shaped flower heads provides an architectural silhouette, a feature lasting well into autumn• Giant oat grass Stipea Gigantea - graceful ornamental grass with narrow or incurved leaves, copes well in dry conditions• Red hot pokers (Kniphofia rooperi) - dramatic flowers that burst into life in the autumn

CoNtAINERs• Cosmos bipinnatus ‘Purity’ - tall, graceful half hardy annual with white flowers• Nicotiana sylvestris - sweet scented, pure white, trumpet-shaped flowers on towering stems• Succulents such as Aeonium, Aloe and the ever reliable and robust Sempervivums look fantastic and are ideal for pots and troughs

18 RUTLAND & MARKET HARBOROUGH LIVING JULY 2012

Vanessa Hollander has been out and about again, charged with fi nding the fashionable way to hit the beach this summer!

BEACH BABES!Although as I write this, it is pouring with rain outside, it IS summer which means that

soon we will be called upon to bare our porcelain bodies and hit the beach! It is always a daunting task choosing swimwear – whether you’re a size 10 or a size 16

there’s always something we hate about our bodies and swimwear will always enhance these areas and our anxiety levels! However, our local boutiques and department stores offer a really good range of bikini’s and one-pieces, plus these local gems provide professional advice on fi tting and styles which is worth its weight in gold!

MY BEST TIPS FOR BUYING SWIMWEAR ARE:

1 Always ask for professional advice – often swimwear can be bought by bra size and, as

such, it’s always worth getting it properly fi tted.

2 Remember to buy for your own size and shape – think about what will suit you,

rather than what you like!

3 In the case of swimwear, you really do get what you pay for! It is well worth investing

in at least one more expensive swimsuit or bikini as it will undoubtedly last for a few summers. Perhaps then you can top up with a couple of cheaper ones?

4 Remember every body looks better with a tan! And every body looks better stretched

out strategically on a lounger! Forget how you look, relax and enjoy yourself – chances are you will never see anyone around you ever again!

As for beach cover ups, as well as the conventional kaftan style ones, consider using an old, much loved, summer dress which might have seen better days but you can’t bear to throw away! Anything goes really so long as it’s made from natural fabrics – a fl oaty dress, kaftan or sarong will take you off the beach and straight to drinks!

HEALTH & BEAUTY

RUTLAND & MARKET HARBOROUGH LIVING JULY 2012 21

With the sun fi nally putting in an appearance, it is important to protect your eyes from the dangerous UV rays that can cause long-term ocular damage. But that doesn’t mean you can’t look great whilst playing it safe! Catherine Batkin looks at this season’s hottest buys for eyes.

SHADES OF SUMMERGREAT FOR…CUSTOMERS ON A BUDGETA little-known gem in the middle of Rutland, Specs Warehouse Direct in Ashwell stock designer sunglasses at greatly reduced prices. At the time of writing, they were yet to receive new season stock but had some superb 2011 summer styles from Gant, Guess and Storm. Well worth a visit if you want a designer look at a bargain price!

GREAT FOR…STYLE CHAMELEONSIf you’re indecisive….or just fancy changing your look, then the new Ray-Ban Tech range is just for you. As main stockists of the brand, Oakham Opticians offer this latest style which comes with 3 interchangeable lenses: polarised, solid and a graduated tint…all for £199.

GREAT FOR…CELEBRITY CHICYou can’t get much more exclusive than designer sunglasses from the brand new Tom Ford collection at Langrick & Coe in Oakham. The Whitney style is available in both black and brown frames, perfect for all skintones and colourings. A slice of celebrity lifestyle is a snip at £239.

GREAT FOR…SOMETHINGYOUNG & FUNFancy something a little bit different? Cute designer Radley (of bag and purse fame) have launched their sunglasses collection – complete with lovely details such as polka dots, fl owers and of course the Radley dog! View the collection at Simmons in Oakham – all cost £79.95.

GREAT FOR…THE AMERICAN PREPPY LOOKK&G Roskrow Opticians in Market Harborough are stockists of modern American brand, Nautica. The very reasonably priced shades are perfect for an active, adventurous lifestyle and will top off your summer preppy look perfectly. Argyle sweater and boat shoes optional!

GREAT FOR…FULL ON GLAMOURNo one does glamour and elegance better than the Italians, which is why Fendi is a great choice for anyone wanting to add a touch of feminine fl air to their summer wardrobe. I love the oversized frames (which hide a multitude of sins!) – view the collection at Andrew Love Opticians in Uppingham with prices starting from £130 (frames only; prescription lenses extra).

HealtHy, HaPPy eyeS:Protecting your eyes from the sun is only one part of looking after them. Vision problems can arise year-round if you don’t look after them correctly. Follow these top tips:

DRy, tIReD eyeSThese are a common problem, especially for people who work in dusty environments or those of us who spend prolonged periods in front of the computer – keep eyes moisturised with Blink eye drops (available from Boots and other local chemists).

taKe aCtIONIf an eye infection does strike, try combating it the natural way before resorting to antibiotic drops. The use of colloidal silver is fast becoming recognised as an antimicrobial mineral, excellent at fighting bacterial infections. A few drops of this (in a professionally prepared formulation) can prevent eye infections developing.

Be alleRGy aWaReThe summer months can be a nightmare for hay fever sufferers and whilst there are many effective over-the-counter antihistamine remedies, there are certain steps you can take to limit the severity of hay fever symptoms. Firstly, wraparound sunglasses will prevent pollen getting into the eyes (Ray-Ban have some great styles). A little Vaseline applied inside the nose will reduce irritation to the nasal passages and remember to keep doors and windows shut mid-morning and early evening when pollen levels peak.

BaNISH PuFFy eyeSLate nights often result in puffy, red eyes and the use of tea bags to reduce swelling is not an old wives tale; it really does work. Make a cup of tea with 2 camomile teabags (drink it afterwards; it is good for you!), squeeze a little of the water out and leave to cool slightly. Apply to closed eyes for 5 minutes – your eyes will feel refreshed,

FIVE STEPS TO BEAUTIFUL SUMMER EYES:

Once you’ve got your eyes looking and feeling great, you need to know how to make the most of them:

1Conceal under eye circles with a skin illuminator such as Yves Saint Laurent

Touche Eclat (or the cheaper, equally good version; L’Oreal’s Touche Magique).

2 Use soft, dewy eyeshadow colours in the hot weather. Mineral powder

formulations won’t crease and they won’t feel hot and heavy in the heat. Try Youngblood Cosmetics from The Beauty Room in Oakham.

3 Fed up of your make-up running on the beach? Consider having some subtle

permanent make-up applied. Lower and upper lash eyeliner can look really effective, making your eyes stand out beautifully without the need for make-up. Contact Thea Pearce through Creme Hair and Beauty for your appointment today.

4 If you want to dazzle at a special occasion this summer, then why not

treat yourself to some lash extensions. Nouvelle Chic in Oakham do Cluster eyelash extensions at a great price. Full lashes cost £25, are waterproof and swimproof and can last up to 2-3 weeks. But if it’s more of a subtle effect you’re after, go for the ‘Flirty Sweep’ option – up to 10 lashes on the corners for just £20.

5 Finally, choose the perfect mascara for length, volume and definition.

My current favourite is Illegal Length by Maybelline. Replace every two months if you wear it every day to get the best out of it.

‘grittiness’ will disappear and they will look brighter too.

SeeK PROFeSSIONal aDVICeSimmons Optomestrists, in partnership with Vista (the sight loss charity) are running free advice and information drop in sessions at the Oakham practice to help local people find out about the types of help and support that is available if they are suffering from sight loss. Future dates include: Monday 30th July, Monday 3rd September, Monday 24th September and Monday 29th October. No appointments necessary; the clinic is open between 9am and 11am.

Abigail and Pete Richardson indulge in some Italian magic

FIRENzE, Kibworth beaUchamp

If you are a regular reader, you will know that this is my favourite restaurant in our

area…the only drawback is the distance from Oakham but on a lovely summer’s evening (yes it was) driving for 25 minutes across the beautiful Langtons was no hardship. I had yet to introduce Pete to Firenze and, as he enjoys many Michelin starred restaurants through work, I was intrigued to hear his opinion.

I am always ready to put my taste buds in the hands of the chef – or in this case the dazzling Sarah Poli (owner, who needs no introduction) who offers a Degustazione experience. Sarah explains, “If, like us, you can never decide what to eat and really want to taste a bit of everything why not try the Firenze tasting menu” – Brilliant!

Now, you will have to forgive me as I am describing from memory, with no menu to

choose from – Sarah simply talked to us about our likes and dislikes and Lino created the dishes accordingly – so bespoke dining! Antipasti of Parma ham and olives as well as warm home made breads and dips introduced us to what was to be our extravaganza delizioso.

Per cominciare: Buffalo Mozzarella and Tomatoes with a Pesto Jus drizzled over – light and divine and “absolutely superb”, declared

overall: Value for money (£45.00 per person for 5 courses), exceptional service, a lively atmosphere, exquisite food and a truly unique experience. Just go! Contact: Firenze, 9 Station Street, Kibworth Beauchamp, LE8 0LN, Tel: 0116 2796260

“Exquisite food and a truly unique experience”Pete. Secondi was Squid on a Salad of Micro Herbs, which had a slightly burned texture – if that sounds off-putting I am not doing it justice – the squid was delicious, delicate and tender; “The best squid I have ever had,” affirmed Pete. My favourite course (if I have to choose) came third – a Nettle Risotto with Seared Pigeon Breast - Incredible flavours which were subtle, yet distinct. Sword Fish on a Green and Butter Bean, Basil and Red Onion Salad followed which aroused the taste buds in preparation for the drama of the Loin of Rabbit with Celeriac “Dauphinoise”, Wilted Lettuce, Peas and Baby Onions. Divine!

La gloria suprema was the Dolci tasting platter – just look at the intricacy of the fruit jelly, macaroons and fudge…and they tasted better than they look! Coffee and taxis please for two extremely satisfied customers who felt very spoilt and indulged. Pete’s verdict: “Cooking doesn’t get much better than this!” – Ok we had rather enjoyed the wines too, but he stands by this statement.

EATING OUT

26 RUTLAND & MARKET HARBOROUGH LIVING JULY 2012

“If you were to choose your local dining out experience by the location then there is no doubt that Oundle Mill, alongside the banks of the River Nene, would be high on the list”, declares Ashley Martin

Britain’s tenth longest river wends its way from its source in the west of

Northamptonshire to the Wash via the Mill, which, while it no longer has its water wheel, does retains echoes of its former glory.

It is many years since I had been in the Mill’s restaurant and it has undergone a signifi cant makeover. Billing itself as a ‘boutique hotel’ with ‘rustic chic’, Oundle Mill can trace its roots back to the 17th century and used to be known as Barnwell Mill. It is located adjoining the A605 just a mile or so from Oundle Town Centre and next to Upper Barnwell Lock.

We were there to sample the Mill’s newly unveiled spring menu, which features an array of dishes with much of the emphasis on utilising a wide range of locally sourced produce. Asparagus is a favourite of mine so I couldn’t resist the locally sourced spears served with an almond and asparagus mousse and a crispy egg (£6.50). Meanwhile, Helen opted for potted salmon with leeks, Jersey Royals, horseradish and a scotch salmon egg (£7.95). Both starters were extremely fl avoursome, very fresh and light. Lightly toasted bread was served with balsamic and rape seed oil and a palate cleanser of pink grapefruit and champagne granite prior to our main course was simple and refreshing.

My spring lamb, from nearby Lutton, was served on a bed of crushed potatoes, pea puree, pea shoots and mint jelly (£19.95). Helen opted for slow-cooked belly pork with celeriac, apple with black pudding, creamed potatoes and crackling (£14.50). Both were light and

aromatic and beautifully presented. For dessert I opted for a warm chocolate

fondant with white chocolate and basil and raspberry sorbet (£6.50). My dessert with its warm and cold texture on the tongue was a delight and Helen declared her banana cheesecake, toffee sauce and Pedro Ximenez raisins (£5.50) delicious and, “Tasting of Christmas cake in a glass”.

Gavin has a number of top kitchens on his CV including London’s Chez Nico (three Michelin stars) and L’Escargot and has created a varied menu. Pleasingly, it is not overly extensive -

thus ensuring freshness and attention to detail. The brevity of the menu contrasts with the extensive wine list - wine being a passion of Mill manager Paul - and we chose a very agreeable Chilean sauvignon blanc (£24.95). • The Mill is hosting summer barbeques by the River Nene every Saturday in July (excluding July 28) and August between noon and 6pm. So here’s hoping the sun shines. Oundle Mill. Barnwell Road, Northamptonshire PE8 5PB, Tel: 01832 272621, [email protected],www.oundlemill.co.uk

RUTLAND & MARKET HARBOROUGH LIVING JUly 2012 29

SWEDISH STYLE

Sweden’s answer to the Landrover Discovery celebrates its 10th anniversary this year. David Corfield reckons its time to look back at Volvo’s biggest off-roader

The XC90 is the biggest of Volvo’s range of 4x4 vehicles and also one of its top-selling models, with over half a million units built so far at

the factory in Sweden.Over the course of the decade the car has evolved and new for this

year are a pair of alloy wheel designs (one in 18- and one in 19-inch), a bumper bar at the front, fully colour-coded front and rear bumpers, sill mouldings and wheel arches. Those ubiquitous LED daytime running lights remain (a classic Volvo safety feature) plus tweaked tail lights, a new three-spoke steering wheel, some white detailing on the dash and leather upholstery for the R-Design top of the range model.

Another addition for 2012 is an application that connects your car to a mobile phone. If you have an iPhone or an Android mobile then - thanks to an extension of Volvo’s ‘On Call’ system - you can find your car on an app-generated map. You can also find out information remotely, such as fuel level, range remaining, average fuel consumption, average speed and even how many miles the car has done. It can also perform a mobile ‘heath’ check which tells you if there’s a problem with your coolant, your oil or your brake fluid.

The 2.4-litre D5 diesel unit produces 200bhp and emits a substantial 219g/km of CO2. Claimed fuel economy is 34mpg on the combined cycle, but I only managed 28mpg according to the car’s trip computer.

The engine could be classed as slightly old-fashioned compared to powerplants from the likes of Audi, BMW and Mercedes. However, while they may be more sophisticated engines on offer from the German rivals, the costs means the Volvo may still be the best option.

The Audi Q7 3.0-litre TDI Quattro Clean diesel SE, for instance, costs £45,525. That’s £4,750 more than the Volvo. Economy is a claimed 38mpg while road tax for the Audi is just £15 per year less at £260. So, while the technology may not be as modern as Audi’s, the Volvo will cost

£3,224 less over three years/30,000 miles. There’s no lack of pulling power though – with 420Nm available there’s

enough grunt to get the heavy XC90 to 62mph in 10.3 seconds with a top speed of 127mph. The gearbox is Volvo’s Geartronic system, a particularly smooth six-speed automatic.

Thanks to the car’s four-wheel-drive system there’s a huge amount of grip available, and it is a very easy car to drive. One thing that can prove tiresome is the foot-operated parking brake, which must be released by hand using the handle on the driver’s right hand side. In a world where competitors are moving rapidly towards electric systems once again the big Volvo begins to show its age. It’s a similar story with the sat nav – although the split-screen is a nice touch it does feel somewhat antiquated now, and can be confusing to operate at times too. You’d get used to it, but there will be some frustration to begin with.

As you’d expect, being a Volvo, there’s a raft of safety systems fitted. The blindspot warning system works very well, and takes the form of an orange light on the A-pillar which comes on when there’s a car in the area behind not visible in the mirrors. Another feature are the adjustable headlights which can be converted to face the other side of the road, negating the requirement for stick-on reflectors which are impractical and quite often ineffective.

The latest XC90 model is available to order now, with prices starting at £35,175 for the D5 AWD Active geartronic model, rising to £43,775 for the Executive version. The D5 R-DESIGN model I drove is priced from £40,775.

Top Hair STYLiST openS SaLon aT BarnSdaLe Lodge HoTeL Abigail Richardson

William Wheelwright, a talented and sought after hair stylists, has recently opened his first salon in the beautiful surrounds of Barnsdale Lodge Hotel near Rutland Water.

Wil trained at Toni & Guy salons 18 years ago, where he became one of the top stylists in its flagship London-based Kensington salon and went on to run its famous training programme for apprentice stylists. He left London to return to his home town of Leicester where he joined Cawthorne & Wright as senior stylist in its prestigious Allandale Road and Oakham salons. However, his ultimate vision was a salon of his own and after five years with Cawthorne & Wright, he has now realised that dream by opening William Wheelwright Hair.

Wil, with the support of Ed Burrows, manager director at Barnsdale Lodge, has created a stunning salon with vintage furnishings and original art by local artist Rori Crawford-Drake. As Wil explains: “Barnsdale is a beautiful and perfect location for my first salon. Having cut many of the guest’s hair there for a number of years it was natural progression to open a salon here. The hotel has established a reputation for quality and service and that is synonymous with what I want to achieve with William Wheelwright Hair. I love cutting and styling – sculpting shapes with scissors and creating looks that make people look and feel wonderful. Hair is such a crucial part of everyone’s identity and I love translating people’s desires into individual hairstyles.”

I enjoyed a very pleasant appointment recently which included not just a cut and blow dry but an Indian head and neck massage too, from beauty therapist Michelle. The overall experience was very relaxing – free parking, beautiful surrounds as well as a tranquil and friendly atmosphere. The salon has a contemporary and resourceful feel with iPads available to while away my time or to catch up with work e-mails and a list of irresistible nibbles and light bites to purchase from the Lodge.• To celebrate the opening Wil is offering a 20% discount to any customer booking an appointment. SpoTLigHT on THe SeYcHeLLeS…The beautiful Seychelles islands are still one of the most idyllic and romantic holiday destinations in the world. During the

winter months of January, February and March, when the UK freezes, the temperatures are between 27 – 30 degrees, perfect for that much needed winter sunshine. For many tourists the pristine beauty of the islands is the major reason to visit - little surprise when it’s home to some of the most stunning beaches and tropical rainforests anywhere on the planet.

Concern for the environment is becoming an ever bigger issue and the Seychelles are a long way ahead of the game and have been for many years as a staggering 50 per cent of the Seychelles land mass is given over to national parks and game reserves and the care bestowed upon them is a tribute to the country’s tourism industry.

Accommodation is varied from a good range of three and four star hotels to an increasing number of luxury properties dotted across the 155 islands. Oundle Travel has access to a showcase of smaller properties through specialised tour operators where clients can enjoy an authentic Creole Seychelles experience, without breaking the bank!

Eating out in the Seychelles ranges from fine dining, through to beachside bistros where a fusion of French, Indian and Chinese tastes are the main cuisine. There is also Indian, Chinese, Italian and French cuisine restaurants so foodies are well catered for. Seafood and tropical fruit are plentiful but imported spirits and wines are expensive due to the import taxes; local beer is always good option!

LigHTer FeeT – SpeciaLiST podiaTrYZoe Paradine Allen has over ten years experience in podiatry and has undertaken specialist training in biomechanics and podiatric surgery. Zoe offers a full range of podiatry treatments from her consulting rooms on Burley Road in Oakham, including the treatment of common foot conditions such as corns, hard skin or nail problems as well as more complicated issues of the lower limbs requiring orthotics.

Using the latest technology, Zoe also performs video gait analysis which is the detailed analysis of the structure, alignment and function of the legs and feet – essentially, how we move. “Clients walk on a treadmill and their gait is recorded and then played back to analyse their movements. Low or high arches of the foot can predispose you to problems and this helps to identify the factors that may be causing or contributing to discomfort. Once identified, we can begin to address the causes of pain and improve mobility.”
