Chuck Lewandowski At our October brunch meeting our speaker was Chuck Lewandowski, (Eng ‘80, RBS ‘ 86), president of the Rutgers Club of Tampa Bay. Chuck talked about ways the club conducts ac-tivities and social events. It encourages net-working and relationship building among club members for Rutgers Alumni residing in the Tampa Bay area. The club has sponsored tail gate parties at Raymond James Stadium when the Scarlet Knights played Big East foe USF. The club also sponsored a “send off” party for two Rutgers bound students from the Tampa Bay area. Chuck told attendees that he hopes the Rutgers Club of Tampa Bay will reach the same level of success enjoyed by the Rutgers Club of Sarasota/Manatee.

Games and a gift exchange added to the fun Rutgers Alumni and guests had at a holiday party held December 2nd at the Peridia Golf & Country Club. Each club member and guest had the option of opening a gift located on the gift table or exchange it for a gift that was previously unwrapped and held up for all to see. Lots of laughter occurred during the gift exchange. Raffle tickets were sold. The winners were happy with the gifts they won. The raffle gifts were sent to the club by the Alumni Relations Department.

HOLIDAY PARTY

At the club’s January 27 brunch meeting, guest speaker David Forgash, director of Lakewood Ranch Community Emergency Response Team, informed us that LWDCert was established in 2006 under a special Homeland Security and FEMA program. Dave shared information about this organiza-tion of volunteers who receive special train-ing to provide search and rescue, first aid and radio communication support in response to disasters and emergencies when professional responders may not be able to reach every-one as soon as help is needed.

David Forgash

Joining him was Marilyn Kline, a trained CERT volunteer. She is a graduate of Rut-gers College and Rutgers School of Law at Newark.

The New Jersey Medical and Health Sci-ences Education Restructuring Act was signed into law and became effective July 1, 2013. The act transferred to Rut-gers nearly all of the schools, institutes, and centers of the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey. Rutgers no longer lacks a medical school. The Inte-gration creates opportunities to excel in the medical , dental, and health sciences. RU Alumni can feel a sense of pride as Rutgers strengthens its reputation as one of the top comprehensive research univer-sities in the nation.

Our speaker at the February 24 brunch meeting was David Marino, head football coach at Palmet-to High School. He played varsity football at Rut-gers, having received a scholarship that covered the years 1984 to 1989. After graduation he held coaching positions at Southeast HS, Lakewood Ranch HS and Sarasota HS. In 2008 he initially worked as O-Line coach at Palmetto HS and subsequently became head coach where he continues in this position at present. In the 2012 football season he coached junior running back Josh Hicks who has verbally committed to play for the Scarlet Knights after graduation. Marino tells his players that after they graduate they should play football at a college where they are going to be happy. He got the same advice from a coach when he was being recruited at his high school. He is proud of his top rusher who plans to attend his alma mater.

The Integration of Rutgers and UMDNJ

Rutgers, New Member of the Big Ten Conference

The Big Ten Conference is a national leader in intercollegiate athletics. Confer-ence teams have won more than 280 na-tional championships. Rutgers will bring very competitive programs to the confer-ence beginning in 2014. Rutgers Club of Sarasota/Manatee members and guests will be able to view on a large screen TV in a private room all the Rutgers Big Ten football games that are broadcast at the Sarasota Brewing Company. Reserva-tions have already been made.

Betsy Winchester Relocates to NJ

Betsy Winchester, UCNB ‘73, announced at the Beachhouse luncheon meeting that she must resign as treasurer, as she sold her home in Bradenton and was moving into a new home in early July to Barnegat, New Jersey. She will be living not far from friends and family members. We will certainly miss her. Barbara Jacoby agreed to become the new club treasurer and continue as secretary.

Jan Rower, Associate Director of Recruitment and Enrollment, University Undergraduate Ad-missions at Rutgers, needed volunteers to represent Rutgers University at four college fairs in October and three college fairs in February. Chip and Dot Churchill represented RU at college fairs held at Bayshore HS, Manatee HS, Bayshore HS, and the School District of Sarasota. At the School District of Manatee College Fair, Daria Charlesworth, together with Chip Churchill, answered questions received from students and parents. Betsy Winchester helped support the University recruitment program by representing Rutgers at the Lakewood Ranch College Fair. Club members Len Satkowski and Gus Andolino were the RU Alumni volunteers at the Venice High School College Fair. Altogether there were five volunteers from the Rutgers Club of Sara-sota/Manatee that represented Rutgers University at seven college fairs. Volunteers will be needed for college fairs scheduled for 2013-2014. You will find information that will help you acquire the ability to answer questions from students and parents at college fairs by logging on-to www.admissions.rutgers.edu. The website provides information about academics, location, costs, and student life. College Fair volunteers find it a fun and interesting experience.

Neilson Dining Hall on the Douglas Campus in New Brunswick was the site of the Loyal Sons and Daughters Awards Dinner on April 13, 2013. Joining me at the dinner was my wife Dorothy and our twin sons and daughters-in-law. Our son David, a Rutgers graduate, was not able to attend.

Chip Churchill Inducted as a Loyal Son

Following the cocktail reception the honorees were escorted into the dining area and intro-duced at the beginning of the program. When my award was presented to me by RAA presi-dent Tom Carpenter and RU president Robert L. Barchi, the following citation was read: “The growing reputation of the Rutgers Club of Sarasota/Manatee for outstanding club gather-ings and events, like the game watch parties at a Sarasota sports bar, scholarship fund raising, and representation of Rutgers at area college fairs, rests on the shoulders of its enthusiastic president, Charles “Chip” Churchill. Chip not only created the club website but writes news-letters that have excited alumni and led to in-creases in club membership. He and club sec-retary Barbara Jacoby directed a campaign that raised $50,000 for the club’s endowed scholar-ship that goes to students from West Central Florida. Chip comes from impressive lineage. He is a direct descendant of General Freegift Patchin, who, like Colonel Henry Rutgers, served in the New York Militia during the

Revolutionary War. The general was cap-tured by the British and practically starved to death in a British prison before being released when the war ended. In honor of the daring feats of his great-great-great-great grandfather, Chip performs a first-person re-enactment of Patchin’s captivity and sufferings. The never give-up spirit of the general lives on in Chip. We salute him as “general” and as our newest Loyal Son.”
