Linatex® Premium Rubber is produced through a unique compounding process using high quality natural latex. It exhibits outstanding strength wear resistance to deliver superior performance in wet abrasive applications.

What Makes Linatex® Rubber Better?

Pure natural rubber is outstanding as an abrasionresistant material, particularly when handling slurries. The inherent properties of strength, resilience and cut resistance have a direct effect on wear performance.

Wear properties of rubber are at their best straight from the tree. The more work that is put into mixing the rubber, the more these properties are diluted by the shearing and breaking up of the long molecular chains.

Conventional dry processing of rubber is based on shearing the rubber during mixing. This significantly changes the average molecular weight distribution and leads to a drop off in the properties that provide optimal performance. This process is similar to starting out with an elastic band, cutting it into short lengths and attempting to join it back together.

By contrast, the unique method used to produce Linatex® rubber gently blends the latex, causing minimal damage to the microstructure of the rubber. This results in a product fundamentally as nature intended.

The processing of Linatex® natural rubberencompasses two distinct operations; the compounding and coagulation of the latex into uncured rubber crepe, and the pressing and curing of the uncured rubber into finished sheets.

Linatex® premium rubber s manufactured in a state-of-the-art rubber processing facility which achieves’ 100% commitment to the preservation of the natural rubber. Coagulation and the drying of latex crepe is completed using microwave energy, all within a single automated process.

The uncured rubber then moves to the pressing phase, where the thickness of each sheet is digitally controlled to achieve optimal uniformity.

To select the most appropriate Linatex® rubber compound for your application, many factors need to be taken into account. The particle size and weight, velocity, angle of impact, temperature, chemical environment, noise and rubber hardness are all critical to the decision making process.

Particle Size & Weight

To achieve the optimal operating economy andlongest service life, rubber thickness should be increased, within certain limits, to cope with larger and heavier particles. Impact of particles from increased height also requires increased thickness to absorb the compressive forces.

As a particle hits the surface, the rubber deforms, absorbing the kinetic energy of the particle in the process. As it re-forms, the rubber returns much of this energy to the particle, causing it to rebound, resulting in little wear and no permanent deformation. However, if the particle is too largerelative to the thickness of the rubber, the impact force cannot be absorbed and the rubber may cut or tear.

Velocity

In impact and sliding abrasion situations, there is a critical speed above which elastomers are unable to recover and absorb energy. In these cases, wear will occur rapidly. For velocities above 10 m/s, consult your Weir Minerals representative.

Angle of Impact & Sliding Wear

The angle of impact relative to the wear surface can have a significant impact on rubber selection. At 90° wear resistance is determined by the toughness of the rubber, however, as the impact angle reduces, resistance to tearing becomes more important. At low impact angles, however, slurries are best handled by flat rubber sheet.

Selection Criteria for Impact Angle and Sliding Wear

Abrasive particle striking non-elastic metal surface. Conversion of kinetic energy into impact, friction and noise.

Abrasive particle striking resilient rubber surface. Rubber deforms under load and returns most of kinetic energy to the particle without rate of wear experienced above.

This diagram demonstrates the reason rubber outperforms steel in many abrasive environments. It is the ability of the rubber to absorb an impact and then return the energy from the impact back to the particle that results in higher wear performance.

Applications

Rubber Hardness & Physical Properties

Physical properties are key to selecting the correct rubber for a given application.

In broad terms, harder rubbers are preferred for combating high impact and cutting forces that often occur where coarse particles are present. Low durometer rubbers give excellent results when used in abrasive slurry or sliding abrasion service, where fine to medium particles are being handled.

Other physical properties can also play a significant role in optimising performance. Consideration should be taken depending on the application for elasticity and resistance to sticking.

Temperature

Natural rubbers are not generally recommended for applications above 70°C (158°F). Although synthetic compounds can exceed 100°C (212°F), adhesive systems for rubber linings are generally limited to temperatures up to 90°C (194°F). Please consult your local representative for further information.

Chemical Environment

Resistance to chemicals can vary between rubber compounds. Natural rubber, for example, is not suitable for use with hydrocarbons. The chemical composition of a slurry or application should always be verified to ensure the rubber selected is suitable.

A chemical resistance chart is available for the Linatex® range. Please consult your local representative for further details.

Noise & Vibration

Occupational health & safety regulations in many countries require that industry complies with noise level standards for the protection of employees. Rubber lined structures generally provide a reduced level of noise and vibration. Please consult your local representative to discuss optimal designs to minimise noise.

Cut End Hose Assembly Instruction

When abrasive materials are handled, it is extremely important to install the hose as evenly as possible. It should be supported along its entire length, while bends and loops should be mounted as uniformly as possible. Every irregularity will cause greater wear at the exposed point and increase the flow resistance in the system.

The correct selection of hose supports should be considered, and there are a wide range of designs for, and methods of, mounting and installing Weir Minerals material handling hose systems.

Supporting systems using standard components have been designed for the majority of applications, and are widely available from pipe stockist. The components of the supporting system consist of simple welded structures of flat-bars and angle-irons.

When welding fixing clamps into place, the following spacing between each clamp on straight installations are recommended.

Hose ID up to 100mm: every 1000mm Hose ID up to 200mm: every 1250mmHose ID above 200mm: every 1500mm

When bending straight hose lengths, the instructions relating to bending radius and clamp location in the enclosed table should be followed.

Measure the required length of hose and mark the cutting point with chalk or crayon allowing an extra 5mm.

Position the coupling ensuring the flange is located on the cut line, then clamp into position. Whilst doing so make sure the two halves are parallel and even.

Bolt the coupling halves into position, ensuring that the bolts are tightened evenly, do not fully tighten one side only as there would be a risk of the coupling breaking. The coupling is in position when there is a 3mm gap between the mating flanges.

Using the flange as a straight edge cut through the hose, please be aware that the knife has to be sharp, PLEASE BE CAREFUL, if it proves difficult to cut the hose add soapy water to lubricate.

Check measure the final length, and reposition the coupling ensuring the 3mm gap between the two halves is kept, and 5mm overhang of the hose is maintained.

Final Installation

Upon final position insert the rubber gasket across the face of the coupling, as the coupling tightens the 5mm of hose protruding through the gasket will compress and locate into a purposed designed recess located within the flange face.

This hose compression together with the 6mmgasket when installed correctly will ensure a water and air tight seal. Fit the purpose design rubber gasket.

Bend out the wire helix and use bolt cutters or a metal saw to cut.

Maintenance, Storage & Handling

When material handling hoses are to be stored for a lengthy period of time, the inner tube of the hose should be protected fromdirect sunlight; i.e. the ends of the hose should be covered.

The hose should be stored so that the minimum possible stress occurs in the rubber. The surface on which it is stored should be able to support the entire hose.

Hoses should not be stored near electric motors or similar machinery because of the harmful effects of ozone.

Store the hose so that it will not be run over by vehicles and protect it from falling objects and other mechanical damage. Material handling hoses with an inside diameter of 150 mm or less are supplied as either 10 metre straight pieces or 20 metre coils.Hoses with an inside diameter of 200mm and above are supplied in straight 10m lengths.

Care must be exercised when handling hose to avoid kinking damage, a hose with steel wire reinforcement will not return to its original shape if it is compressed, with the result of a permanentdeformation

When lifting hose with mechanical means avoid the use of a single strap or wire round the middle of the hose, such a method of lifting will often cause a kink, occurring in the centre of the hose.

The best solution is to use lifting appliances such as a U-beam and at least four fabric straps evenly spread along the length of the Hose should be used, or wherever possible, the hose should be fitted using the lifting system as shown.

Wear Indicator Hose

Our unique, wireless Wear Indicatortechnology provides a complete solution to many of the problems that are faced inmaintaining highly abrasive materialshandling hose.

Our Wear Indicator technology eliminates the need for physical inspections and averts costly emergency downtime. Our technology also helps to prevent unexpected hose failure which can cause environmental spills and health and safety incidents.

The Wear Indicator technology even detects wear in hoses carrying conductive slurries, including those containing hyper-saline.

Service, Maintenance, Storage andHandling of Rubber Products

Background

It is common knowledge that products made from Natural Rubber (NR) experience degradation when exposed to ozone, UV light and other deleterious substances. Linatex® rubber, being made from anunprotected NR compound is particularly prone to Ozone & Ultra Violet attack. Premature failure, either in use or during storage, of Linatex® rubber components due to these forms of attack is a well-documented phenomenon.

The current Linatex® rubber manufacturing processes do not allow the present levels of Ozone and UV resistance to be improved in any meaningful way. Therefore, we need to rely on sound storage practices to protect Linatex® products at all times prior to their final use. This includes protection during manufacture, transport, storage in either our own or our customers’ warehouses, whilst being applied or at any other time where they may be exposed to Ozone or UV.

Target Backing

Shooting ranges around the world have selected Weir Minerals’ Linatex® rubber products as a permanent fixture to safeguard shooters against dangerous ricochets in shooting ranges. The outstanding resilience, strength and resistance to both cutting and tearing of Linatex® rubber ensures the rubber is able to ‘self-heal’ after a projectile has passed through.

The target backing also deadens noise from shots and strikes against the rear armour plating. At the same time, the quantity of hazardous lead dust is reduced. The lead dust and fumes are better contained behind the rubber where they can be extracted and do not reach the persons shooting at the firing stations.

Linatex® premium rubber also satisfies the safety requirements for shooting ranges and as a result is used by the military, police and private clubs.

Independent tests have also shown Linatex® premium rubber to give the longest life regardless of the ammunition used.

TARGET

TARGET

Projectile passes through a fixed panel e.g. particle board

Result: The fixed panel is splintered and pierced.

Projectile passes through target backing curtain after hitting target.

Synthetic rubbers have low elongation and elasticity, will not self-seal and will disintigrate more rapidly.

The excellent elongation and elasticity of LINATEx® Premium Rubber decelerates the projectile velocity and self-seals, leaving only pinprick size holes.

Projectile passes through Linatex® target backing.

Result: Linatex® Rubber Target Backing Self-Seals Leaving Only Pinprick Holes.

These illustrations show the design of a safe, efficient shooting range incorporating Linatex® rubber curtains.

The rubber hangs freely, it is secured only at the top, which is necessary to maximise its effectiveness. The rubber is suspended in panels which can easily be switched and moved to spread the load.

Using Linatex® rubber products prolongs the life of the curtain, making it easier to clean and facilitating the extraction of lead fumes.

Linatex® rubber products can be supplied in various curtains and sizes.
