IT WAS ALL
YELLOW Blacktown and Mount Druitt hospitals
turned yellow this week for RU OK? Day,
which aims to inspire and empower
everyone to meaningfully connect with
people around them and support anyone
struggling with life.
Our BMD HR team did a fabulous job with
events at both hospitals including
massages, facepainting, walks, talks and
(of course) cupcakes. Great job!
With a focus on building resilience and
reaching out, RU OK Day reminded us to
start a conversation if we see someone
struggling. For more information, visit
ruok.org.au
Our AW Edwards construction team (front
page and top left) also dropped in at
Blacktown to show their support. Mates
in Construction (MIC) 1300 642 111 offers
support for at-risk workers in the building
industry.

HELP IS ON ITS WAY The Streamlining Outpatients Services (SOS) project is
getting ready to take off in our Blacktown Hospital clinics,
with the team now working towards a series of staff and
patient surveys to help improve the outpatient
experience.
Project lead Clementia said the team had identified 20
clinics at Blacktown Hospital for redesign, which will look
at updating procedures, addressing non-attendance, and
improving the interface with GPs for referrals and ongoing
care.
The project is due to be completed next year ahead of the
refurbishment and expansion of outpatient clinics at the
hospital.

WORLD STAGE FOR
PROJECT RED Exec sponsor Luke has been taking Project RED to the world
this week! There were 1600 participants from 40 countries at
the sold-out International Forum on Quality and Safety in
Health Care, presented by the BMJ and the Institute for
Health Care Improvement. Luke, pictured above, said the
poster presentation was “very popular”.
“I explained some of our projects and challenges to delegates
from all around Australia, NZ, the UK, the USA, China and
Taipei, and many came back several times for more
information,” Luke said.
“I was a great opportunity to explore and share new ideas,
acknowledge our staff and share wonderful projects such as
Project RED with the world.”
Project RED stage 2 is now underway so check your staff
emails for more information.

TOWERING ABOVE
Wondering what’s poking
out of the top of the atrium
roof? Not a tower, but the

forms part of the new entry
area.
PJ PROGRESS The C52 team #endPJParalysis challenge is powering along
with nearly 500 PJ-free patient days clocked up already. The
‘End PJ Paralysis’ campaign helps reduce length of stay and
improve the patient experience of hospital by getting getting
people in hospital up, dressed and moving.
“Patients are very keen to participate. When I talk to them
about it they say ’why should I wear a hospital gown when I
can wear my own clothes?’” said C52 NUM Maria.

Western Sydney patients are getting faster
emergency treatment than ever, despite
demand for care growing at almost twice the
rate of other regions in the state.
Blacktown Hospital’s performance was a
stand-out, with the median time patients
spent in the emergency department reducing
by almost half an hour.
At Mount Druitt Hospital, despite growth in
demand more than twice the state average,
80 per cent of patients left the emergency
department within four hours – an 11 per
cent improvement from the same period last
year.
“An initiative known as Project RED has
revolutionised the way we treat
patients,” Western Sydney Local Health
District (WSLHD) executive director of
operations Robynne Cooke said.
“Project Red has closely examined patient
flow through our hospitals and rectified areas
that can slow a patient’s treatment down,”
she said.
“We expect our performance to continue to
vastly improve thanks to this initiative.”
As well as improving treatment performance
right now, Project RED is also looking ahead
to 2019.
It is just one of the many initiatives and
models of care changes currently underway
to get our services ready to move into
expanded facilities in 2019.
Congratulations to our ED and Project RED
teams and departments!

conflicts and peacekeeping operations, their
families and their communities.
Our ANZAC Memorials will be transformed with
handmade poppies to honour those who served,
especially medical and nursing staff.

Knit or crochet a poppy for Remembrance Day
Take the first step
towards helping
kids with CP
Last year, Mount Druitt and Blacktown raised more than $7000 to help kids with cerebral
palsy. Collectively, WSLHD staff raised $28,146, placing us fourth on the NSW Health
leaderboard. Let’s do it again!
Registration is now open for Steptember 2018, which will run from 4th September to 1st
October. The challenge is to take the equivalent of 10,000 steps a day, and ask family,
friends and colleagues to sponsor you. You’re not limited to walking – cycling, soccer,
gardening, pilates and many other activities count towards your 10,000 steps.
All WSLHD staff can register for free (usually $25). You just need to organise a team of four
and nominate a team captain. The captain registers the team for free using the code
WSLHD2018, and invites three team members to join. Each team member receives an email
invitation to complete their registration.
You’ll receive a free Steptember kit with a pedometer. Kits will be sent in August, ready for
you to start on 4th September. Many of us will be donning walking shoes in September, so
there’ll be no shortage of colleagues to keep you motivated.
In the meantime, find out more about Steptember, organise your team and register at
www.steptember.org.au
In honour of all those who wore yellow for RU OK Day we present the ultimate in yellow - that Aussie icon the sulphur-crested cockatoo. Detail from Life by Cody Bennett from our 2018 Photo Competition. Have a great weekend.
