Message From Ms Larosa Dear Parents/ Guardians, We have had a great week of parent involvement! Thank you for joining in on our Hallowe’en Parade and Monster Mash performance on Tuesday. Students had a fun and safe afternoon, thanks to the creative planning of our teachers and the additional support we received from parents who volunteered their time for the afternoon. Yesterday’s pizza lunch brought even more parent volunteers. We truly appreciate your time invested at our school, whether for a class trip, volunteering to read, or in cele- brating with us at sports meets and/or school events. Our Learning To Read Workshops took place this week for Kindergarten to Grade 2 parents. We had a good turn out both nights. Thank you to Jana Leggett, our Speech and Language Consultant, who was able to review the theory and development of reading in children, as well as highlight many practi- cal and intentional strategies, games and tools to help parents support their child at home. Reading comprehension requires both strong word decoding and listening comprehension skills. Parents actu- ally experienced the complexity of this with some of the activities we engaged in at the workshop, learned how to use Elkonin boxes, and so much more! Attached please find a Tips Sheet on some of the items that were highlighted at our sessions, particularly on phonological awareness, which you will find useful. As well, a second attachment is included that lists a wealth of resources and apps that address specific areas when learning to read. Remember, reading WITH your child provides the op- portunity for you to teach strategies (at their level), whereas reading TO your child should be simply that…modelling the love of reading! This allows for choosing books that are at higher levels, of varied interests, and rereading the same books for enjoyment. What will you read to your child today? As mentioned in last week’s message, the entry time for our students is at 8:40 a.m. Teachers are on duty at 8:25 a.m. for supervision. Please ensure your child starts his/her day well by being at school no later than 8:40. This is when your child’s teacher picks up their class outside and starts the day. Hearing morning announcements and all that is happening at school for the day, as well as instruction from your child’s teacher, all contribute to students’ sense of belonging and a great start to the day! There is no excuse on Monday, as daylight savings time ends this weekend and we all get one extra hour of sleep! Please remember to turn your clocks back one hour! Enjoy the weekend! Soccer News

On Wednesday November 1, 2017 our Junior Boys Soccer team headed to Monarch Park Stadium to participate in the City's Championship round against all the other Conference winners. It was a great day for soccer as 16 schools teams, coaches, par-ents and organizers made their way in the massive indoor complex. Our team showed great composure in their Semifinal game against the Eastern Conference Champions West Rouge. After going down 1-0, the team showed great determination to score 3 goals and take a strong lead. They maintained their focus even under increased pressure from the opposition and showed great grit in resisting the final assault to win and make it to the City's Final!! The great emotional and physical energy spent was worth it as the team was guaranteed another banner through this result.

The final game against Lambton-Kingsway, the West Conference Champions started with a bang as our boys took the early lead and maintained it till the first half. The opponents showed their skill and talent in reversing the result to 2-1. Rolph was not done yet as a majestic individual play by our captain Cooper Kelly followed by a powerful outside shot tied the score at 2-2 going in the final 5 minutes. A blitzing counter-attack gave Lambton-Kingsway the lead and they were able to withstand our numerous efforts till the final whistle. A crushing loss of 3-2 but not a humbling one. Great passion, desire and courage shown by our boys to play this beautiful game till the end and what an awesome soccer season. The camaraderie and beautiful times shared will not be forgotten. Rolph Road brings home 2 banners alongside medals and badges. We are proud of you boys! Go Rolph!

Responsibilities will include helping kindergarten students take out their lunch, opening containers, engage them in reading, quiet activities or play once finished eating, and/or tidying up, and help zip coats up and put boots and mittens on. Grade 5 helpers will have time to eat lunch during this time period and at 12:00 assist the lunchroom supervisor with out-door play activities until 12:30 p.m. After this time, Grade 5 helpers will be dismissed outside, supervised by our regular staff until afternoon entry at 12:40 p.m. If you are interested in taking part in this leadership initiative, please sign up inside Room 2 (Ms. Campbell's classroom) on Monday, November 6th during morning recess.
