The Road to War

• The Industrial Revolution had brought about many new technologies and lifestyles…but it also created some “ISMS.”

Road to War• The competition of

the Industrial Revolution for resources and consumers was essentially the ideas of CAPITALISM.

• Capitalism- an economic system in which prices, production, and distribution of goods are determined mainly by competition in a free market

Road to War• The competition

that was created because of the capitalist system reached far further than economic systems. It created problems amongst countries fighting for ___________, _________, and __________.

Road to War• Capitalism was the

policy used by the United States. The Industrial Revolution brought about an ideology completely opposite of Capitalism.

• Communism- a political and economic theory of social organization based on collective governmental ownership of the essential means of production and distribution.

Road to War• Peoples of

the Western Hemisphere that enjoyed democratic governments did not like the ideas of socialism. (and still don’t today)

Revolution also lead to a since of NATIONALISM.

• Nationalism- a sense of loyalty and devotion to a nation expressed by praise of one nation above all others and intense concern with promotion of its culture and interests

lead many people to demand for their own independence. Also, in an effort to promote their own countries, many would “badmouth” or “degrade” other countries.

Road to War• Of all the “Isms”

that contributed to the beginning of “The Great War,” IMPERIALISM might be the most to blame.

• Imperialism- the policy of extending and increasing a nations authority by acquiring territories or establishing economic and political dominance over other nations.

Road to War• By 1900,

imperialist Europe had taken over most of Africa, had lands in Asia, as well as Latin America.

• Britain, France, Russia, Italy, and Asia all competed to expand their empires.

Road to War• As European

countries began to act on their imperialist ideals and compete for colonies, MILITARISM was born.

• Militarism- a fascination with war and the military; a policy of aggressive military preparedness

Road to War• All of these “ISMS,” combined

with several other factors would eventually lead to the largest WAR the world had seen …WORLD WAR I !!!!!
