Prepared by: SHERMAN SCOTT / BLAKE DAVIES The much anticipated opening of Nordstrom’s is scheduled for September 18. As part of Cadillac Fairview’s redevelopment of the former Sears premise, they will occupy the first three floors, totaling 230,000 square feet. Below Nordstrom’s, Pacific Centre opened a new wing welcoming many other fashion retailers, including Boss, Kate Spade, AllSaints, Ted Baker, Pandora, Tumi, B2 and Weekend Maxmara. Other notable non-fashion openings include a Microsoft retail store and a Disney Store. As part of Holt Renfrew’s plan to maintain its position as the dominant luxury specialty retailer in Canada, their Vancouver location at Pacific Centre will soon be growing by 30% or 40,000 square feet (Nordstrom being located around the corner). Continuing with large format retailers arriving in Vancouver, Quebec based La Maison Simons will open a 105,000 square foot store in the Fall of 2015 as part of Park Royal’s $150,000 million renovation and expansion. La Maison Simons products range from an extensive selection of moderately priced, private-label products to a considerable amount of men’s and women’s ready to wear designer items. Several other major large format retailers rumoured to be exploring the Vancouver retail landscape include Nordstrom’s off-price division, Nordstrom Rack and Saks Fifth Avenue. With two locations secured in Toronto, rumours persist that Japanese fast fashion retailing giant, Uniqlo, has secured or is working on securing locations in the Lower Mainland area of Vancouver, including a downtown flagship store. Months after closing its flagship 52,000 square foot Chapters store on Robson, Indigo Books and Music has leased the recently shuttered 5,000 square foot Aldo shoe store at 810/816 Granville and plan to open a much smaller format Indigo Spirit store. This is a short term commitment with speculation that a larger format downtown location is being pursued. Meanwhile, SportChek/Atmosphere is currently fixturing the 52,000 square foot former Chapters for its new store. Vancouver remains a high demand destination for luxury retailers seeking high profile, street front locations. Swiss watchmaker Jaegar-LeCoultre, has leased space at 1012 Alberni Street and Chinese jeweler, Lao Feng Xiang, has leased space at 1016 Alberni Street. Both stores are expected to open shortly. Prada will soon open at The Carlyle, 1060 Alberni Street, joining DeBeers and Tory Burch. 745 Thurlow has landed luxury retailers Versace, Brunello Cucinelli and Strellson; opening date announcements are expected soon. Vancouver’s 2nd largest building, the Trump Tower, is nearing completion. The retail component will feature Las Vegas’s famed pool bar and night club, Drai’s, as well as Mott 32, one of the most prized restaurants in Hong Kong. Also included in the tenant mix is renowned Equinox Fitness along with other high end retailers soon to be announced.
