About Rajiv Gandhi School of IPLawIt is said thatLaw is organic. The Rajiv Gandhi School of Intellectual Property Law (RGSOIPL) at IIT Kharagpur moves several steps ahead to say that legal education is organic too.
A brainchild of Mr. Vinod Gupta (former CEO of InfoUSA and life fellow of IIT Kharagpur), the school was setup in 2006. It is currently the only Law school in the country functioning under the IIT system. RGSOIPL has the unique feature of imparting traditional legal education along with contemporary law courses suited to match the demands of a global economy. The school has been engineered to embody excellence in techno-legal education. Fostered and fortified by IIT Kharagpur, the School is in academic collaboration with the George Washington University Law School, USA and offers an energetic and creative learning environment. Its friendly atmosphere encourages the students to make the most out of their potential. The School seeks to cultivate a spirit of excellence within its students. The school equips the students to inculcate the intricacies of traditional law subjects and thereby capitalize this knowledge to excel in advanced technology law courses including those dealing with Intellectual Property Rights.
The School presently offers Three-year, full-time, residential LL.B. with Honours in Intellectual Property Law program recognized by the Bar Council of India. Students are selected through a National Level Entrance Test followed by Group Discussion and Personal Interview. The applicants are engineers, doctors and other science graduates, who outlast and sail through a rigorous selection process. Students must not only have either a degree in engineering or a post-graduate degree in science, but also legal acumen to become a part of the school.
The LL.B. course curriculum includes a study of 35 courses, including elective courses, over a period of three years divided into six semesters. In these three years, the students form a strong base in general laws and are exposed to intellectual property laws from the second semester onwards. The Law relating to Copyrights, Patents, Trademarks and Designs is as much a part of the curriculum as the Law of Torts, Law of Contract, Corporate Lawand Criminal Law. The School strictly implements the Bar Council of India syllabus with 21 core law subjects such as Constitutional Law, Business Laws, International Trade Laws and others. The course modules facilitate the students to acquire a sense of moderation and balance, and a rigorously critical frame of mind. The students are provided training in logical reasoning and precision of expression. The Faculty add a practical dimension to their teaching through cooperation, in particular, with members of the Bar.In addition, moot
DIRECTOR'SMESSAGELegal education in India has a strong tradition of interfacing
social sciences and law for a century. In the recent decades
the emergence of technology as a driving force to deliver
public goods has created an urgent need for professional
lawyers who have a background and foundation in
technology and science. This requires a new paradigm and
the establishment of Rajiv Gandhi School of Intellectual
Property Law is an essential step towards that goal.
Rajiv Gandhi School of Intellectual Property Law (RGSOIPL),
IIT Kharagpur, is the face of the new legal education that is
evolving around the knowledge based economy.
IIT Kharagpur is the oldest, largest and the most diversified of
all the IITs and is currently rated as the best amongst them. It
has a vast reservoir of knowledge and expertise in the highest
realm of learning in science, engineering and technology. This
environment enables and empowers the new breed of
lawyers with technical and science background to
disseminate the complex issues of justice and Rights in the
knowledge era.
The School enables engineers, doctors, science and
management graduates to pursue their legal education
hitherto not available. The legal education imparted to them
aims to set new standards in legal education with
specialization in Intellectual Property Rights and other
branches of Law.
RGSOIPL is the right destination for organizations which are
into innovation and commercialization of IP. As a scientist,
engineer and technologist if one is looking to build an exciting
global career in IPR , a Law degree from RGSOIPL should be
your right choice. The Law programme also opens up career
opportunities in various branches of Law apart from IPR.

courts, projects and seminars in each semester provide hands-on experience thereby developing and enhancing legal research and pleading skills. Every student has to appear for a comprehensive Viva Voce at the end of third year. A compulsory dissertation in the final year is a must to graduate. Thus, the young scholars acquire knowledge that prepares them astutely to enter the legal world.
The budding lawyers graduating from the school are well-equipped for careers in law and a number of our alumni have been successful in Law Firm careers in diverse areas such as Corporate Law, Mergers & Acquisitions, Patent Law and so on, in both prosecution as well as litigation. Coupled with professional science and engineering backgrounds, the students are well-equipped to take on roles and responsibilities in in-house legal and IP cells in areas of IP management, Legal and Compliance etc. Our students are also making their mark in techno-legal consulting.
The school takes pride in its state-of-the-art infrastructure. The school has an in-house law library with subscriptions to various law journals, texts and reference books.High speed internet complements access to major legal databases like Westlaw, HeinOnline and Manupatra. Students also access books and resources at the IIT Central Library, which boasts of being the largest among all IITs and the one of the largest in Asia. State of the art classrooms, video conferencing facility, discussion rooms, and a well-equipped moot court hall all make the school premises a positive learning environment.
The School has a lively student community which makes the entire guild cosmopolitan. The School seeks to achieve the highest levels of distinction in the transmission of knowledge and understanding. The School encourages student involvement in extra-curricular activities, recognizes the importance of serving the community and also persuades them to volunteer and participate in public welfare projects.
The school has also been a host to several legal luminaries including Hon'ble Justice U. C. Banerjee, Hon'ble Justice A. K. Ganguli, Hon'ble Justice P.K.Ray and Dr. N. R. Madhava Menon, who have delivered lectures to the students on various occasions. Dr. N.L.Mitra, instrumental in developing the Law School, brings with him four decades of legal education experience in designing the curriculum and imparts hands on education through regular interactions with the students.Guest lectures by legal experts, partners of reputed law firms, IP experts and erudite lawyers ensure that the students are exposed to the technicalities of legal practice.

ACTIVITIES
Simulations of court proceedings, also known as "moot
court" are widely utilized around the world as an
educational tool. The aim of a Moot Court is to improve
the oral advocacy skills of students. Moot court is a
concept to bridge that gap of class room and court room
and in that it has to reinvent itself with the changing
environment of real life to infuse the necessary skills to
make theory relevant to practice and to gain insight from
practice to strengthen the theoretical frame work. The
School has its own well equipped Moot Court Hall, with
retiring rooms and recording facilities.
The Moot Court Society (MCS) is a student committee
which coordinates the mooting activities at RGSOIPL.
The MCS's role is to facilitate and regulate mooting
activities. Firstly it involves planning and organizing its
annual national moot court competition, 'The Verdict'.
MCS' second function is to facilitate the selection of
School teams for participation in various Moot Court
Competitions across the country. Our students have
participated and performed well at several prestigious
National level Moot Court Competitions. In another
important role, the MCS helps in developing mooting
skills of students and creates interest in mooting by
encouraging more participation.
The Socratic Society is an open forum to extend
scholarship and learning experience beyond classroom
exercises and bookish perceptions. The Society, a peer
group of the faculty and students, endeavours to add
pristine dimensions to the open-ended issues of, and
about, law. The intricate issues are examined from
interdisciplinary dimensions of economics, politics,
natural science, philosophy and sociology. Following the
Socratic tradition, this scholastic group breaks down a
given problem into a series of rudimentary questions;
the debate gradually distils the answers. The Society
invites eminent scholars from various disciplines to
reflect on the current issues. This brings for the academic
community of RGSOIPL opportunities to broaden their
horizon through interaction and exchange of views and
experiences with a community of scholars from
diversified academic and social orientation.
Recently, IIT Kharagpur launched a first of its kind patent
drive,“100 Days 100 Patents” with the support of
students and faculty from RGSOIPL and Technology
Transfer Group to help the students of IIT Kharagpur in
patenting their inventions by providing legal and
financial support. Students from the School have been
helping the inventors to write invention disclosures,
performed patent searching and have also been drafting
provisional patent applications.
One of the asserted goals of the Rajiv Gandhi School of Intellectual Property law is the promotion of legal
education and research. In fulfillment of the same the Legal Aid and IP Facilitation Clinic offers legal and IP
services by the faculty and the students. It not only provides a centre for practical professional training for
students of law, but more importantly, provides free legal services to the socially and the economically
backward sections of the society who have difficulty accessing the judicial system and much needed advice
regarding the protection of Intellectual Property to the IIT community in the campus.
The expertise of the students in their respective
fields of science, technology and medicine, give
them an edge in critical legal understanding.
Through modern classroom techniques and
dynamic teaching methods students integrate their
expertise in enhancement of their legal acumen.
Along with the academic focus the students engage
themselves in various activities of societies and
clubs like Socratic Society, Moot Court Society, Legal
Aid & IP Facilitation Clinic and Law & Business
Society.
The students have also won accolades in Moot Court
Competitions, Debating Events, national and
international Essay Competitions and also published
papers in leading journals.
The students have been actively involved in national
level projects like Ganga River Basin Management
Project. The students are further associated with
industry through projects like DARTS-IP which
provides them firsthand experienceand industry
exposure.
