THE MINISTRY OF HEALINGIn his ministry, Jesus performed many different acts of healing: forgiving sins, casting out demons, curing physical disease. At his command, his disciples continued a ministry of healing which included the laying on of hands and the anointing with oil of those who fell ill. The Church has continued these practices as part of its ministry in Christ’s name. The laying on of hands and anointing the sick are associated with intercession and the gifts of God’s spirit. They express the Church’s earnest supplication for those in need of healing.

The worship tradition called TAIZÉ (pronounced: Teh-zay), began in the ecumenical French monastic community of the same name. It is a quiet service of meditation, reflection, reading, music, and healing. The experience finds its true meaning in the participation of those assembled, by focusing and deepening our faith through the power of prayer to bring spiritual, mental, and physical healing. All are encouraged to participate as the Spirit moves them, whether in song, prayer, or quiet meditation.

AN EVENING SERVICE OF WORD AND MUSIC FOR HEALING

James 5:14-16aAre any among you sick? They should call for the elders of the church and have them pray over them, anointing them with oil in the name of the Lord. The prayer of faith will save the sick, and the Lord will raise them up; and anyone who has committed sins will be forgiven. Therefore confess your sins to one another, and pray for one another, so that you may be healed.

GATHERINGThe Holy Spirit calls us together as the people of God.

Translation:Where true charity and love abide,God is dwelling there;God is dwelling there.

PRE-SERVICE MEDITATION: Ubi Caritas et Amor

P: In the name of the Father, and of the ✠ Son, and of the Holy Spirit. C: Amen. P: The grace and peace of God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ be

with you. C: And also with you.

P: Dear brothers and sisters, we have come together in the name of our Lord, Jesus Christ, who restored the sick to health, healed those troubled in spirit, and who himself suffered so much for our sake. He is present among us still to heal and to make whole. Therefore, we entrust those who are sick or in trouble of mind or spirit to the grace and power of Jesus Christ, that the Lord may ease their suffering and grant them health and salvation.

C: Thanks be to God.

CONFESSION AND FORGIVENESS

P: Blessed are they whose transgressions are forgiven. When I kept silent, my bones wasted away through my groaning all day long. Then I acknowledged my sin to you and did not cover up my iniquity. I said, “I will confess my transgressions to the Lord,” and you forgave the guilt of my sin.

C: Amen.

P: Let us confess our sin before God and one another.

A brief silence is kept for reflection.

P: Father of mercy and God of all consolation, C: have mercy upon us, O God, according to your loving-kindness.

According to the multitude of your tender mercies, blot out our transgressions. Wash us thoroughly from our iniquity and cleanse us from our sin, for we acknowledge our sin, and our sin is ever before us. Create in us a clean heart, O God, and renew a right spirit within us. Cast us not away from your presence, and take not your Holy Spirit from us. Restore unto us the joy of your salvation, and uphold us with your free Spirit; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

WELCOME HOME!

P: Bless the Lord, O my soul, and all that is within me, bless his holy name. Bless the Lord, O my soul, and do not forget all his benefits—who forgives ✠ all your iniquity, who heals all your diseases, who redeems your life from the Pit.

C: Amen.

WORDGod speaks to us in scripture reading, preaching, and song.

THE FIRST READING: Isaiah 50:4-9a NRSV4The Lord God has given me the tongue of a teacher, that I may know how to sustain the weary with a word. Morning by morning he wakens— wakens my ear to listen as those who are taught. 5The Lord God has opened my ear, and I was not rebellious, I did not turn backward. 6I gave my back to those who struck me, and my cheeks to those who pulled out the beard;I did not hide my face from insult and spitting. 7The Lord God helps

me; therefore I have not been disgraced; therefore I have set my face like flint, and I know that I shall not be put to shame; 8he who vindicates me is near. Who will contend with me? Let us stand up together. Who are my adversaries?Let them confront me. 9It is the Lord God who helps me; who will declare me guilty?

L: The Word of the Lord. C: Thanks be to God.

*THE HOLY GOSPEL: Mark 8:27-38 NRSV27Jesus went on with his disciples to the villages of Caesarea Philippi; and on the way he asked his disciples, “Who do people say that I am?” 28And they answered him, “John the Baptist; and others, Elijah; and still others, one of the prophets.” 29He asked them, “But who do you say that I am?” Peter answered him, “You are the Messiah.” 30And he sternly ordered them not to tell anyone about him.31Then he began to teach them that the Son of Man must undergo great suffering, and be rejected by the elders, the chief priests, and the scribes, and be killed, and after three days rise again. 32He said all

this quite openly. And Peter took him aside and began to rebuke him. 33But turning and looking at his disciples, he rebuked Peter and said, “Get behind me, Satan! For you are setting your mind not on divine things but on human things.”34He called the crowd with his disciples, and said to them, “If any want to become my followers, let them deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me. 35For those who want to save their life will lose it, and those who lose their life for my sake, and for the sake of the gospel, will save it. 36For what will it profit them to gain the whole world and forfeit their life? 37Indeed,

May these gifts we offer to you bring life and healing to your children, through Jesus Christ, your Son, our Lord.

C: Amen.
