WELCOME AND ANNOUNCEMENTS

BRIEF ORDER OF CONFESSION AND FORGIVENESS

Blessed be the holy Trinity, ☩ one God, full of compassion and mercy, abounding in steadfast love. Amen.

Trusting God’s promise of forgiveness, let us confess our sin against God and one another.

Eternal God our creator, in you we live and move and have our being. Look upon us, your children, the work of your hands. Forgive us all our offenses, and cleanse us from proud thoughts and empty desires. By your grace draw us near to you, our refuge and our strength; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Since we are justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ. God’s love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit given to us. In the mercy of almighty God, Christ died for us while we still were sinners;

and for his sake, God ☩ forgives you all your sins. Amen.

GATHERING HYMN God is Here!, ELW 526

PRAYER OF THE DAY The Lord be with you. And also with you.

WORD FIRST READING: Isaiah 45:1-7 1Thus says the LORD to his anointed, to Cyrus, whose right hand I have grasped to subdue nations before him and strip kings of their robes, to open doors before him — and the gates shall not be closed: 2I will go before you and level the mountains, I will break in pieces the doors of bronze and cut through the bars of iron, 3I will give you the treasures of darkness and riches hidden in secret places, so that you may know that it is I, the LORD, the God of Israel, who call you by your name. 4For the sake of my servant Jacob, and Israel my chosen, I call you by your name, I surname you, though you do not know me. 5I am the LORD, and there is no other; besides me there is no god. I arm you, though you do not know me, 6so that they may know, from the rising of the sun and from the west, that there is no one besides me; I am the LORD, and there is no other. 7I form light and create darkness, I make weal and create woe; I the LORD do all these things.

Word of God, word of life. Thanks be to God.

RESPONSIVE PSALM Psalm 96:1-9 1O sing to the LORD a new song; sing to the LORD, all the earth. 2Sing to the LORD, bless his name; tell of his salvation from day to day. 3Declare his glory among the nations, his marvelous works among all the peoples. 4For great is the LORD, and greatly to be praised; he is to be revered above all gods. 5For all the gods of the peoples are idols, but the LORD made the heavens. 6Honor and majesty are before him; strength and beauty are in his sanctuary. 7Ascribe to the LORD, O families of the peoples, ascribe to the LORD glory and strength. 8Ascribe to the LORD the glory due his name; bring an offering, and come into his courts.

6

9Worship the LORD in holy splendor; tremble before him, all the earth.

SECOND READING: 1 Thessalonians 1:1-10 1O sing to the LORD a new song; sing to the LORD, all the earth. 9Worship the LORD in holy splendor; tremble before him, all the earth.

Word of God, word of life. Thanks be to God.

GOSPEL ACCLAMATION

GOSPEL Matthew 22:15-22 The holy gospel according to St. Matthew, beginning in the 21st chapter. Glory to you, O Lord.

15Then the Pharisees went and plotted to entrap him in what he said. 16So they sent their disciples to him, along with the Herodians, saying, "Teacher, we know that you are sincere, and teach the way of God in accordance with truth, and show deference to no one; for you do not regard people with partiality. 17Tell us, then, what you think. Is it lawful to pay

7

taxes to the emperor, or not?" 18But Jesus, aware of their malice, said, "Why are you putting me to the test, you hypocrites? 19Show me the coin used for the tax." And they brought him a denarius. 20Then he said to them, "Whose head is this, and whose title?" 21They answered, "The emperor's." Then he said to them, "Give therefore to the emperor the things that are the emperor's, and to God the things that are God's." 22When they heard this, they were amazed; and they left him and went away.

The gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, O Christ.

MESSAGE

HYMN OF THE DAY Lift Every Voice and Sing, ELW 841

CREED

I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord.

He was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit and born of the virgin Mary. He suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again. He ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

8

PASSING THE PEACE The peace of Christ be with you always. And also with you.

BELL CHOIR Oh, for a Thousand Tongues to Sing

CHILDREN’S OFFERING/OFFERING

OFFERING SONG Create in Me, ELW 186

OFFERING PRAYER Merciful God, Blessed are you, O God, maker of all things. Through your goodness you have blessed us with these gifts: our selves, our time, and our possessions. Use us, and what we have gathered, in feeding the world with your love, through the one who gave himself for us, Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord. Amen.

PRAYERS OF INTERCESSION Father in Heaven we turn to you in prayer not because we must tell you our needs, but so that we can praise you and give thanks for all the ways you meet all of our needs.

9

As the sun rises and sets, we are granted one more day on this earth. We are blessed to be called stewards of the land that you promised to our ancestors. We give thanks for the air, water and fruit of the land that gives life. We pray for those who because of war, poverty, and natural disasters are prevented from having access to these basic necessities of life. Guided by the Light of God. Hear our Prayer.

When asked, Solomon requested wisdom, in order to be a just and righteous leader. We pray for the leaders of this nation, the leaders of our community, and the leaders of the ELCA, may they receive a portion of the wisdom granted to Solomon so that they too can lead in a way that is just and righteous. Guided by the Light of God. Hear our Prayer.

Are we willing, Lord, to render unto God, that which belongs to God? Father you gave your only begotten son for our salvation. Help us Lord to recognize when the things of this world keep us from surrendering our lives to you; reminding us that those who seek to save their life, must lose it. Guided by the Light of God. Hear our Prayer.

We lift our eyes to the hills - where does our help come from? Our help comes from the Lord, the maker of heaven and earth. Lord we ask that you bless those that will gather this afternoon for the strategic planning retreat. As we gather to discuss and identify priorities for the future of our faith community may the work of those who attend be led by the Spirit. Guided by the Light of God. Hear our Prayer.

Lord we lift up these prayers for the sake of ourselves and our community; knowing that your answers may not be our answers, your timing may not be our timing, but your will be done because you are a loving and just God. Amen.

LORD’S PRAYER Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.

10

Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever and ever. Amen

SENDING TEMPLE TALK

BLESSING May God, whose power working in us can do infinitely more than we can ask or imagine, grant you the gifts of faith and hope.

Almighty God, Father, ☩ Son, and Holy Spirit, bless you now and forever. Amen.
