The Good Word … Home

The story of the year may well be the humanitarian crisis of surging multi-

tudes of refugees fleeing war, despair, and ethnic hatreds. I saved a photo-

journalist’s shot of a child behind chain-link fencing with the caption:

“Nearly half of the estimated 12 million refugees flooding into Europe are

children.” The trauma and human cost of exile is staggering. We recall the

exile/deportation in Jewish history that nearly wiped out Israel save for

God’s remnant. I think also of the editorial cartoons about Syrians in exile

encountering ‘No Room in the Inn’ signs. This crisis recapitulates the gos-

pel narrative of Mary & Joseph finding no lodging before the birth of Je-

sus; it is also the scene of the Holy Family’s “Flight into Egypt” after

Herod’s “massacre of the innocents.”

In exile “You wander through the world waiting to say Hello and for some-

one else in the world to say Hello and to mean it…”* Is Christ to be in

exile in every age and place? For surely there are still many who scorn

him, this one who only wanted to share the Kingdom and be at home with

us in the love of God. And surely it is true that “the Gospel’s destiny and

proper home is the person…” ** —that is, you and me and the others we

may reach.

We may think of the church as those who once “in the exile world said Hel-

lo to him and meant it”* ; the church is all of us who receive the Word and

let it dwell among us in all its richness (Colossians 3:16 NEB).

Now, as I contemplate what’s happening in the world, and ponder his com-

ing in this holy season, I pray we welcome him warmly and take him to

heart. Lord, bless your Holy Word this Christmastide, wherever it is

preached and heard, that it may find a home with many, to your eternal

praise and their eternal peace, through Christ our Lord.*** I add my

love to his, Pastor Tim

“Sing to the LORD a new song, for he has done marvelous things; his right hand and his holy arm

have worked salvation for him. The LORD has made his salvation known and revealed his right-

eousness to the nations. He has remembered his love and his faithfulness to Israel; all the ends of

the earth have seen the salvation of our God.” [Psalms 98:1-3]

HELLO AND HAPPY NEW YEAR RESURRECTION FAMILY!

Thank you to all the choir members and volunteers for your

wonderful music over the Advent and Christmas season! I was

overwhelmed at the talent and time you shared with our music

ministry. I thank you for sharing your voices and other gifts to

use in service and love for others and in worship to help spread

the Word through song! I also thank all of the congregation mem-

bers who have supported us, brought friends and family to wor-

ship with us, and for your beautiful thank you cards and emails.

I so look forward to starting a new year with new music and

new inspirations of ways to prepare, and share God's blessings

through our music to touch hearts and to have an impact today on

spreading God's grace, hope, and love. If any of you desire to join

our chancel choir, our choir rehearsals will resume January 6 at

6:45pm. Thoughts and prayers are with all of you for a happy and

blessed new year!

Blessings to all, Amy

Faith In Action

The 2015 Angel Tree Project has been a true Christmas Blessing on all sides! What a

tremendous success!!!

Twelve boxes of food, four large bags of gifts, along with assorted gift cards have been

taken to Erica Suber at Chancellor Elementary School for distribution. The items for the Luther-

an Family Services Minnick Schools will be picked up by Ellen Bushman very soon. There

were well over $600 in kitchen item receipts making the Minnick Schools eligible for the $300

in matching funds from Thriven Financial. WOW!!

Special thank you to the Resurrection Boy Scout Troop for the outstanding effort in col-

lecting the nonperishable food items. The Resurrection Preschool also helped with their own

canned food collection; delivered by the children themselves. Our Health Ministry assisted The

Faith In Action Team with the organization of the food boxes. What a smooth operation!!! All

extra food items have been divided with Christ Lutheran Pantry, Wilderness Food Pantry, and

the Brisben Homeless Shelter. All of this great effort made the Angel Tree Project come togeth-

er with fantastic results and a true Spirit of Christmas.

The generous support from the Resurrection Family gives this project the true Light of

Christmas, allowing the lives of many children to be made far, far better. Watch the Feb-

ruary Newsletter for more details concerning the Angel Tree

results.

Christmas Blessings,

Gene Ernst

Youth December was quite a busy month that actually started for the RLC Youth in November with many of our young people manning the red ket-tle and ringing the bells for the Salvation Army on November 23. We rounded out the season with ornament making, caroling at Chancellor’s Village and the Village at Towne Centre. On Christmas Eve they served as Worship Assis-tants and told the story of the Christ Child through scripture, story, and drama for the children’s service and provided music at all three services.

As we venture into 2016, our theme of service to others will continue as we collect bedding, food, litter and other needed items for the Spotsylvania Animal Shelter. Donations can be placed in the bins under the Youth Bulletin Board in the narthex.

The youth will be attending a self-defense ses-sion at the Aikido Dojo in Massaponax on Jan-uary 24. The Virginia Synod retreat for high school youth, Winter Celebration, will be Janu-

ary 22-24 at Eagle Eyrie. Several of our high school young ladies will join Donna Roberts.

To all the young people with whom I am privi-leged to spend time in worship and in play: Philippians 1:3.

In His Peace,

Donna

Congregational Meeting

Sunday, January 31

The Meeting will be held between the two services that day. The significant topics of this Congregational Meet-ing include the status of the Call process, current state of the budget, voting on new Endowment Board mem-

bers, and a presentation of some new financial policies.

We will have discussions at 9:45 between the services on Jan 3 and 24.

January 10 and 17: Adult Forum with Pastor Tim

I will be sharing some recent thinking on the Church's evolving sense of mission and Bishop Eaton's call to put

inclusiveness on the agenda of all levels of the church-congregations, conferences, synods, the national church

and its agencies. This will reflect some of the work of the VA Synod's Inclusive Outreach Team, nickname Tap-

estry. (The team has met here at Resurrection often over the years, partly because this was Shelley Fields' base.
