Students are able to observe objects up close with the use of the school’s microscope camera. The camera is very much like the microscope of old, but plugged into a computer and the image observed on screen. Students are then able to save and publish their images as part of their investigations. In this image, Dylan is studying plant adaptions to their environment and is hoping to see the stomata that releases moisture into the air. He sees an egg attached to the leaf.

A MESSAGE FROM LUCY What a busy few weeks of learning we have had at CPS! From ‘The Lion King’ rehearsals and hockey to garden club and dance troupe rehearsals (and everything in between!), our school is buzzing! It has been fantastic to see the initiative of some of our Year 6 students come to fruition this week, with new handball courts being painted under the COLA. Dylan Slaven and Jack Jones-McShane have been working hard to complete this project under the guidance of Mrs Bunworth! It looks fantastic boys – well done! Dylan Slaven and Jack Jones-McShane are pictured inspecting their work.

This week the Annual General Meeting was held for both our P&C and School Council. I would like to extend a welcome and thanks to our incoming P&C president, Julie Cowell and the P&C executive team. Julie is taking over the role from Alice Crawford who has dedicated so much of her time while serving our school as the P&C president for the past three years. Nigel Emery has agreed to continue as the president of the School Council – we thank him and the school council team for their ongoing support of our school. I would like to take this opportunity to thank our outgoing committees for their hard work and dedication over the past year. It is the collective efforts of these community teams that are helping make Cootamundra Public School a great place for students to learn and grow.

BULLYING NO WAY!

On Friday 16 March, all students from Kindergarten to Year 6 will be involved in a range of activities and lessons in their classes to mark the National Day of Action against Bullying and Violence (NDA). These lessons will focus on messages of acceptance and inclusion.

The NDA is a positive day of action and focuses on starting a conversation about how we can all play a part in stopping bullying and violence. Everyone has a role in creating safe and supportive places for children and young

people, and at Cootamundra Public School we are committed to working together with families to address bullying. Let’s take a stand together!

Supporting children through issues with peers can be complex and emotionally draining for parents. So what are some of the things you can do as a parent to help your child?

o Learn what bullying is and what it is not. This is the first step in preventing or responding to bullying. 'Bullying' is a word that is used for lots of things that are not actually bullying. Other behaviours may be just as serious, but may require different responses.

o Talk about bullying with your child at home to make it easier for them to tell you if something happens. Make sure they know what bullying is and how they can respond. Help prepare your children to prevent online bullying and to know what to do if it happens.

o Start when your child is young to guide them to develop the social and emotional skills they will need to build positive relationships throughout their lives, including problem-solving skills.

o Recognise the warning signs of bullying. Although there may not be an issue, you should talk to your child if you have any concerns. Raise the topic generally if you don't want to ask directly. Be aware that many times children and young people won't ask for help, so it is important to know what to look for.

o Contact the school if bullying has occurred and the school needs to be involved. Read about how you and the school can work together to support your child, whether your child was bullied, bullied others, or witnessed bullying. A strong home-school partnership can be critical in addressing bullying behaviours.

KANGAROO CENTENARY REMEMBERED

In September 2015, students of Cootamundra Public School joined other schools, community members and marchers to re-enact the famous war recruitment drive from Wagga to Sydney. The drive became known as the Kangaroo March.

Ms Angela Williamson presented the communities of Cootamundra and Wallendbeen with plaques to commemorate the re-enactment of the Kangaroo March in 2015. The plaque will be placed as a permanent reminder on the World War I Memorial in Albert Park. A commemorative plaque will also be situated in Wallendbeen.

Kangaroo March singer/creative writer Ms Angela Williamson with our school executive and Mr David Jacobs.

The Clancy and Crawford families from Cootamundra Public School participated in the march on their horses.

CRICKETERS OUTSTANDING SUCCESS Bowling, batting and exceptional fielding! Cootamundra Public School displayed all the skills during their first round

victory over Murrumburrah Public School in the PSSA Schools Cricket Knockout. On Friday 2 March, students from

Cootamundra Public School played on the hallowed turf of Albert Park Cootamundra to compete against

Murrumburrah Public School, coached by a familiar face in Mr Loiterton. Captain Koby Godbier won the toss,

electing to bowl first. The game began with a spell of fast and accurate bowling, with Koby and Paul Bean limiting the

runs scored, while also claiming crucial wickets. Cooper Jones, Sidney Charleston and wicket keeper Squire Crawford

were outstanding in the field and did not allow Murrumburrah to score easily. Oliver Hall and Rupert Tait both

bowled impressive spells, sustaining the pressure with Rupert also claiming a wicket. Archi Piffero’s impressive leg

spin bowling display bamboozled the Murrumburrah batsmen and was ably assisted by Darby Bateup, Cooper Jones

and Sidney Charleston, who each bowled an over. Cootamundra claimed 8 wickets before the conclusion of their

allocated overs and were set a target of 61 runs to chase, with Paul Bean (3 wickets for 5 runs) and Archi Piffero (2

Wickets for 3 runs) the pick of the bowlers.

When Darby Bateup and Koby Godbier walked out to the batting crease chasing a challenging total of 61, the game

was delicately balanced. However, after one over at the crease, CPS definitely held the upper hand, as Koby hit a 6

and 4 from the last two balls of the first over. Darby played an anchor role, tying up one end while Koby scored freely

from the other. Murrumburrah were finally able to remove Darby, but by that stage, Koby had already reached 22

runs and was well on his way to reeling in the Murrumburrah total. Lachlan Dabin joined Koby in the middle, as he

continued to wreak havoc on the Murrumburrah bowling attack, eventually retiring on a score of 42. Lachlan kept

the runs flowing, scoring 11 runs before being caught out trying to finish the game with an aggressive shot. Toby

Lawson, Rupert Tait and Sidney Charleston were able to score the final runs needed to post an outstanding victory in

only 12.3 overs.

Congratulations CPS on an impressive performance and the first cricket victory in the last 7 years. A huge thank you

to the parents and supporters for cheering the team on, and to local cricketing guru Pat Kerin for preparing the pitch

and umpiring on the day. Well done CPS!

Todd Kable
