From the Deputy’s Desk

Students throughout the school are establishing class routines and rules in line with our School Expectations of

Respect, Responsibility and Aspire.

Each week, class teachers present three Expectation Cards to acknowledge class members for demonstrating these expectations. When a student in Years 3-6 has collected four Expectation Cards they place them in the

labelled boxes outside the DP Office near Lost Property. K-2 students place the Expectation Cards in the red tin in my office, situated on the bottom floor of the Kindergarten and Year 1 block. Expectation Certificates are presented at fortnightly assemblies in Years 3-6 and in weekly assemblies for K-2 students. Names will also be published in Manly West Matters each fortnight.

Congratulations to the following students for gaining 4 Expectation Cards to receive an Expectation Certificate:

Zoe Ward, Eva Godfrey, Isla Poutney and Lucy Stritzker.

K Transition to School and Thank You Year 3 Parents

Our Kindergarten students have settled well and parents and

students can be very proud of such a smooth transition to ‘big school’. We thank our Year 3 parents who kindly provided morning tea for our Kindergarten parents at Tea and Tissues on Monday. Thank you also to our prefects and staff who are supporting Kindergarten. Quiet time after school and early nights help students adjust to a five day school life.

Kindergarten students start school at 9:20am and may be collected at 2:30pm until Friday 16th

February. Please inform the office by email if you are picking your child up at 3:20pm. From Monday 19th February, students will be dismissed at 3:20pm.

library! Mrs. Burke and I are excited to work with all Manly West students.

Bike and Scooter Reminders Below are some reminders about bikes and scooters. The full Bicycle/Scooter and Skateboard Policy can be found on the school website in School Notes. It is important to note that students store their bikes, scooters or skateboards at their own risk.

Students over 10 years, who bring their bicycle/skateboard/scooter onto school grounds, are responsible for:

completing a Bicycle/Scooter/Skateboard rider’s agreement issued by the school. This will be issued next

week and needs to be returned to Miss Wyles.

dismounting at designated entry and entry points at Hill, Boyle and Griffith Street before entering the

school grounds and walking their bicycles/skateboards/scooters whilst on the school grounds.

safely storing their bicycle/scooter/skateboard in the designated bike rack area. Bicycles/scooters/

skateboards and helmets are brought and stored at school at the owner’s risk.

securely locking bicycles/scooters/skateboards with a chain and padlock supplied by the owner.

Safe Riding Behaviours:

Students are to always correctly wear an Australian Standards approved helmet when riding.

Students must always ride in a safe manner following these guidelines and the NSW road rules relating to

bicycle/scooters/skateboards.

Foot scooters and skateboards are best ridden in recreational areas designated for their use.

Driveways, uneven ground and the traffic environment are potential hazards for riders.

Bicycles/scooters/skateboards are not permitted to be ridden on school grounds during or after hours.

Parents and carers will be notified if their child does not adhere to the school’s bicycle/scooter/skateboard

safety guidelines. Students may not be allowed to bring their bicycles/scooters/skateboards onto the school grounds if they do not follow the rules.

Manly West Working with Children Check Volunteer’s declaration and 100 Point Check Helping out at school is a great way to get involved in your child's education and to get to know the school staff and other parents.

All volunteers who are working with our students, whether within classrooms, around the

school, on an excursion or at a sporting event are required to obtain a Working With Children Check (WWCC) Declaration 100 Point Check. As a volunteer, there is NO cost involved in applying for the check.

The check is valid for five years. If you have completed the check in 2015 / 2016 or 2017 you do not need to complete the form again.

Working with Children Check (WWCC) Volunteer Declaration form is attached with the newsletter, available at the office OR can be downloaded from the Notes section on the Manly West website. All volunteers will be required to complete this; including a 100 point proof of identity check (documents which may be provided are

included with the form). Once completed, you need to bring the form and the original proof of identity documents to the office for verification. Once these are sighted they will be returned to you. You may then work with the children.

Years 3-6 Swimming Carnival The swimming carnival will be held on Tuesday 13th February, at Manly Swim Centre from 9:45am – 2:00pm. Children from Years 3 - 6 will walk to the pool with their class teachers straight after morning assembly. It is important that all children be at school by

9:00am so that rolls can be checked. The Carnival must start promptly in order to finish by 2:00pm.

Year 2 children who turn 8 this year and currently participate in

a junior squad swimming program may attend the Carnival. They will be competing against 8 year olds from Year 3 in freestyle events and Year 2 students will require a time for 50 metres freestyle to enter.

Year 2 students will walk down to pool with a Year 2 teacher

and they will return to school once their event has been

completed.

The cost of the carnival is $8 and will be included in the Semester One account. Unfortunately season

pass holders will not be able to use their passes. The pool has advised us that spectators attending the Carnival must pay the $4.00 entry fee.

All children need to wear sports uniform and bring a towel, hat, sunscreen, food and plenty to drink.

There will be no school lunch orders available. Students are unable to access the canteen at the

pool. Please ensure that all items of clothing and children’s towels are clearly labelled with their name and 2018 class.

MW Canteen is still looking to cover several shift spots (9.30am-12pm or 12pm-2pm) in Term 1 to allow the canteen to open its doors. Thanks to our wonderful regular recurring volunteers (once a month) we have already filled several shifts.

To allow the canteen to schedule and gather new volunteers to fill vacancies we will be continuing to utilize the Signup page in 2018. If you can fill a recurring spot (once a month) or just fill one spot in Term 1, it all helps. You can also sign up family members (Gran, Papa, Aunt or Uncle) or pass on the information to fellow MW parents that you know would like to become part of the Canteen in 2018. Please visit www.manlywestpandc.org.au/canteen and click on the "Volunteer Button". Not tech savvy?

Dance Auditions 2018.

The process of Dance auditions will commence next week, Week Three. There are possibly three dance groups available

for students to audition for from Years 3-6.

I will be attending a Regional Dance Meeting tomorrow afternoon, Thursday 8th February where I will be informed as to

the format and group allowances for each school.

There will hopefully be a Senior Girls Dance Group, which will be open to girls from only Years 5 & 6. There will also

hopefully be a Junior Girls Dance Group which will be open to girls in Years 3 & 4 and a Boys Group in which boys from

Year3 – 6 are invited to audition.

The audition process will be over two weeks and the final groups, once decided, will be notified of their success. I hope

that all three groups will be able to apply to perform in the Sydney North Dance Festival, which is held in the final two

weeks of Term Two.

The dance audition committee and I are looking forward to seeing all the talented and interested dancers at the auditions.

All students are responsible for listening to the times and locations for each audition.

Stage 3 Creative & Critical Thinking Skills

…”The twenty-first century-with its complex environmental, social and economic pressures-requires young people to be creative,

innovative, enterprising and adaptable, with motivation, confidence and skills to use critical and creative thinking” -

The Australian Curriculum.

Pedagogy in the 21st century has put an emphasis on

the 4C’S- collaboration, critical thinking, creativity

and communication. This year, Stage 3 will be

developing their creative and critical thinking skills

during weekly sessions with Mrs Lind. During these

sessions students will get the opportunity to practise

their creative and critical thinking skills using rich

literature and visual arts.

As part of this program, teachers will also be

developing their deep knowledge of the Australian

Curriculum’s General Capabilities, an ‘integrated and

interconnected set of knowledge, skills, behaviours

and dispositions that can be developed and applied

across the curriculum to help students become

successful learners, confident and creative

individuals and active and informed citizens;

(Australian Curriculum.)

This learning forms part of a 3-year strategic plan at

Manly West and both teachers and students are

excited about the learning opportunities ahead.
