Air Quality Considerations We consider the health implications for staff and students on days when there is poor air quality and plan school activities appropriately. As for wet weather, extreme wind or extreme heat, Executive monitor the conditions at school and advise students and staff through the bell system if recess and lunch is to be indoors. At times, when the air quality is considered fair, students with a diagnosed health condition are offered indoor play in the library at recess/lunch. Mrs Wendy Mwanga, Deputy Principal

Kitchen Gardens News In the Kitchen Garden this week… Have you seen the upcycling craft using old milk bottle lids Year 4 students made last week? It's hanging on the STEAM demountable. Year 4 are continuing their garden art and craft activity and doing garden jobs. We are planting seeds and seedlings of summer crops like corn, eggplant, rockmelon and capsicum. Year 2 had a lesson on the water cycle yesterday and they built a class terrarium so they could observe this process up close. They also measured their sunflowers planted 10 weeks ago and the tallest were 1.35m tall! Kindy are planting in the K-2 Literacy & Numeracy Area in Weeks 7 & 8. Thrive the Kitchen Garden Cookbook Christmas solved! Thrive makes an excellent Christmas present for friends and family. We will be selling the Kitchen Garden cookbook at a Xmas Special price of $30. Cash sales under the big tree Fridays 22nd & 29th November. You will be able to purchase via Flexischools for the discounted price too. Limited stock available so get in quick. The Manly West War on Waste continues... The focus for Term 4 is on Nude Food! Please help us reduce our waste going to landfill by the choices you make with the food and drinks you send to school with your children. SAKG - WE NEED YOUR HELP! With the loss of a number of key garden helpers this year we really need some new volunteers to help us look after the garden. They key jobs are to water the garden and turn the compost bins but there are a lot of other things too. If your child will be in Year 3 (Semester 1) or Year 4 (Semester 2) next year, come along and learn with them in the garden. Go to Signupgenius.com search under my email address, [email protected] for "Manly West Kitchen Garden" and sign yourself up for a day that suits. If you haven't done this before, email me and we can arrange a garden orientation. If you are bringing kitchen scraps from home to add to the school compost bins, you must be signed up at least once per term. Please do not put ANY bags in the bins, even if they say they are compostable or biodegradable. I have recently replaced the signs on the school compost bins to clarify what we do and don't accept. Please respect the "do not add anything" signs on the red cross (closed) bins and look for green tick (open) bin. Any questions email me. Thanks, Angie Penn and Beth Dowdle

Local Hero

Meet the amazing Sue. She helped propagate over 100 plants for the Carnival Plant Stall.

What makes her contribution so amazing (other than all her plants looked gorgeous and

assisted our fundraising) is that she has no real connection to the school. She lives locally

and is a neighbour to many Manly West families. She is so friendly and has such a

beautiful garden that even families that don’t live in her street, but use it for access to the

school, know who she is and say hi as they wander past. We can’t thank Sue enough for

her contribution to our carnival – she is a gem!

Library News

Next week is the final week of borrowing for 2019! Please bring your library bag in Week 7 and borrow one last time this year. There are still brand new books to borrow and enjoy! As of Week 8, all students will need to return their Manly West Library books so we can get the shelves ready for next year. If you have lost a book, please either replace it or pay for it so another one can be purchased and put back into circulation for other students to borrow. Your class can win a prize if ALL students have returned ALL their library books!

If you’d like to purchase some pre-loved books and help a good cause at the same time, head to nearby St Augustine’s College in Brookvale. They are holding another book fair that starts Friday, November 22nd and ends Sunday, November 23

rd at 2

pm. There will be collectable titles as well as an enormous range of adult and children’s books.

The MWPS Library and Scholastic Book Club could not run as smoothly without the help of our wonderful parent helpers! Parent volunteers, please come to the Thank You Morning Tea next Thursday, November 28

th at recess time. Looking forward to having a cuppa and chat with you

then!

Happy reading!

Mrs Ellen Swick Teacher Librarian

Manly West Before & After School Care (BASC)

This week’s BASC Information Board BASC Fire Relief For the next 4 weeks BASC will be collecting money donations to send to the NSW Royal Fire Service. We’ll also be collecting clothing, unwanted toys, and canned food for The Salvation Army to help the families who have lost everything. There will be both money boxes & donation bins in all 4 BASC rooms. Every bit counts!! We absolutely loved having the Manly fire brigade come and visit us, so we hope as a community we can come together and lend a helping hand.

Meet our Educators

“Hi, I’m Riley! I’ve been working at BASC for 2.5 years now! I’m currently

not studying, however next year I’ll either study primary school teaching

or zoology. You’ll find me in room 2.0. What I love most about working

at BASC is the children and being able to have some sort of impact on

their life, whether that just be making their morning or afternoon fun

and enjoyable. When I was a student at Manly West between 2004 -

2011, I loved joining in all sports activities, carnivals and PSSA. “

… All Junior children’s incursions this term are community based!

Come and check out our incursion program!!
