PRINCIPAL’S THOUGHTS

Education Week 2020 Welcome to Education Week 2020 as we celebrate the best in Public Education under the theme of "Learning Together".

It is our pleasure to showcase the learning of our students next week particularly on Tuesday through our virtual Open Day. In this year of challenge, the need has never been greater for us to work together as a community to support student learning and wellbeing. The fruits of this partnership will be evident in the on-line showcase of student work on Tuesday and throughout the week. Thank you for your active support of our children at this time. Technology for Parents/Caregivers Zoom Seminar As part of Education Week 2020, you can participate in a session designed to support parents and carers to engage with their children’s education by introducing them to the technology most commonly used by the NSW Department of Education to support teaching and learning in schools and to facilitate online learning.

Participants of this session will be guided through the use of both Google Classroom and Microsoft Teams products that are common software platforms used throughout NSW Department of Education schools.

Please register using the below link: https://us02web.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_w-af-xBkSTyLn2x3mNJsMg Success in Selective Exam Congratulations to the following students who have been offered a place in a selective high school for 2021 namely: Rosanna Bambang, Charlie Bernia, Jonas Chung, Sam Johnstone and Celina Kessal. Our very best wishes goes to the students. Gel Guns Prohibited The school has been alerted that Gel Guns have been taken into schools in NSW. Even so, this does not include Drummoyne PS. A gel gun or hydro blaster are gun-shaped toys that fire gel balls through a powered, compressed air gearbox system. Gel guns appear identical to various handguns, shotguns and rifles internationally and their possession and use in NSW are strictly illegal. The colour, size and details of these gel guns make it difficult for anyone to differentiate between a toy and a real firearm. Please know that it is an offence to possess or use a firearm, pistol, or prohibited firearm unless the person holds the relevant license or permit. Further, it is an offence to supply, acquire, possess or use a firearm which is not registered. With best wishes for the week ahead,

Birthday Congratulations We would like to acknowledge students who are celebrating their birthdays this coming week. Congratulations to:

Lilian Peng KA, Azra Taskun KC, Rumi Taskun KC, Olive Bockos 2S, Ryan Manning 2K, Helena Meitanis 3W, Jacob Newton 3T, Toby Stagnita 3T, Zachary Dang 3/4D, Amelia Nguyen 4A, Tennyson Eide 4A, Samuel Irvine 4A, Georgia Kolokotsas 4F, Callum Park 5C, Agniia Grimstad 5C, Marcus Kennett 5M, Charli Husken 5/6O, Daniel Kelly 6S & Tyrese Medina 6P.

Class 3/4D are very excited to share their wonderful writing. Utilising the Seven Steps to Writing approach in class, they have focussed on Tightening Tension and Show-Don’t Tell strategies.

Year 3 experimented with tension to build up suspense with vivid details. They then created a green screen photo to match their exciting ending.

Year 4 experimented with indirect characterisation to allow the reader to experience their character through action, words, thoughts, senses and feelings. They then dressed up as their character and chose a setting using a green screen.

THE COW COLUMN

Welcome to another cow column. This week we've been looking at dairy production. After a survey we conducted on our young students, we found that a lot of them didn’t know where milk came from. So we’re here to explain!

Dairy farmers have a licence to supply milk to a local milk processing facility. The cow is milked when her udder is full, either by hand or machine. The farmers organise tankers to come and collect their milk to deliver it to the local processing facilities. These facilities are located close to farms, so the milk doesn't have to travel very far.

Did you know that the calcium content of milk is 125 milligrams per 100 grams?

The milk is tested twice, before and after it is processed. The tests are conducted to make sure the milk is safe to consume. The milk is pasteurised and homogenized. Finally, the milk is packaged and then delivered to supermarkets and shops all across Australia.

This week we have some exciting news regarding the actual painting of the cow as we've all been working hard on our designs and will be starting to paint next week! We are very excited!

COW JOKE ALERT!!! Why was the cow annoyed? She was Moo-dy

Please stay tuned for next week, as it is Education Week the real cow fun will begin! Have a cow-tas-tic day!

THROUGH MY WINDOW ART PROJECT

The following watercolour paintings were inspired by Jeannie Baker’s book “Window” as well as time that students spent isolating at home. Students chose to paint either an actual view from a window or an imagined landscape. The artworks were completed by students in a range of classes from Kindergarten up to Year 6. We hope you enjoy gazing through the windows.

LIBRARY NEWS

Education Week Book Fair

Education Week will take place from Monday 3 to Friday 7 August and the library will be hosting a Book Fair as part of the celebrations on Thursday 6 August.

Unfortunately parents and grandparents will not be able to attend this year.

Leading up to the fair, students will be looking at the books and bringing home a wish list. This will feature the titles of books your child is interested in and the price of the books. To ensure we stay Covid safe, all students will sanitize their hands before and after handling the books.

It would be appreciated if families could take advantage of the online payment or credit card options on the back of the wish lists. As a last resort students can also pay by cash on the day. Every book purchased at the fair helps us earn funds for our school library!

Remember that the Premier’s Reading Challenge is still going! It’s not too late, but time is running out! All your reading has to be logged by August 28! Students can log their reading at: https://online.det.nsw.edu.au/prc/studentExperience.html#/

Happy reading,

BOOK CLUB

Book Club has now also been closed for ordering through the school for Term 3. Even so, LOOP parent ordering online will be open. This allows parents to order and pay a delivery fee, to be sent directly to their home. Nothing will come to the school. For account set up or ordering issues please call Scholastic Customer Service on 1800 021 233 (8am to 5pm).

TERM 3 CHESS LESSONS

Learn to be a chess champion! Coaching for students at Drummoyne Public School is held on Tuesdays from 11:15 AM - 12:15 PM. Learning and playing chess helps children develop their logical thinking and problem solving skills, improves their concentration and focus, while also being a great source of enjoyment. Activities include group lessons on a demonstration chess board or interactive whiteboard, puzzle solving and fun practice games. Students earn merit awards by making checkmates, or by displaying skills and positive qualities, which all good chess players strive to develop. If your child is interested in taking part, you can collect an enrolment form from the school office, or email [email protected] for a copy. For all enquiries, please contact Sydney Academy of Chess on (02) 9745 1170.

CODE CLUB

Code Club returned this week. It takes place in the library from 3:30pm – 4:30pm every Thursday. If you collect your child from Code Club, please wait for them at the front gate at 4.30pm.

Lost Property - Label everything! Please ensure your child’s name is permanently and clearly labelled on belongings such as school hats, jackets, lunch boxes, drink bottles and school bags. With the cold nights and warm days our lost property items have been mounting up this week. Given this, all labelled items will be returned to students.

PBL FOCUS: RESPECT

Safe play This week we are looking at the safety of everybody moving around the playground. We will show respect in passive and active areas in the playground.

• I play by the rules of the game • I use the appropriate (safe) equipment for

playground zones • I respect the property of others • I follow teacher instructions • I use kind words and actions • I keep my hands, feet and other objects to

myself • I listen to others • I use strategies when I feel angry- count to 10,

take a deep, find a quiet space, • I consider other people around me

PARENTING IDEAS

Standing behind difficult decisions Johan and Harry were both suspended from school for a day after willingly watching a schoolyard fight. Their school had a zero-tolerance policy toward fighting and believed that those who watched a fight were as complicit in the conflict as those engaged in the fighting. The reactions of both sets of parents to the boys’ suspensions differed greatly. Johan’s parents supported the school’s actions and made the necessary changes to their work schedules to accommodate the suspension. Privately, they thought that the suspension may have been harsh, but as they agreed with the school’s zero tolerance approach to violence, they knew they had no option but to accept the suspension. They counselled their son against similar behaviour in future and made sure his time away from school was spent doing schoolwork.

Harry’s parents weren’t quite so supportive. Thinking that their son’s suspension was unfair, they contacted the school’s principal asking to have the suspension removed. The principal listened to their concerns

however she didn’t remove the suspension. She reminded Harry’s parents of the reasons behind the school’s zero tolerance approach to fighting and urged them to support of their policy. Disappointed but obviously not deterred, Harry’s father took time off work to take his son on a fishing trip on the day of the suspension. This action showed little regard for the school’s efforts to encourage a culture of respectful relationships, as well as scant respect for the principal’s authority.

Make the most of learning moments Both sets of parents thought that the suspension of their sons was harsh. However, only one set saw the situation as a learning experience for the son. Johan’s parents discussed with their son the place that bystanders play when violence breaks out. They reinforced the message that although it may take courage to stop a fight or bring it to the attention of teachers, it’s these sorts of actions that constitute positive leadership. Harry’s parents couldn’t see past the injustice of the suspension and missed a great opportunity to teach their son any number of lessons. These include what he may do next time a similar incident occurs, how he might respond when he sees someone being bullied or even how to nip conflict between peers in the bud before it escalates. There are many discussions they could have had with their son due to the suspension. From an educative perspective, this was an opportunity missed.

Trust the process Arguably, the bigger issue in this story is that just as Johan’s parents did, we parents need to trust the processes that teachers put in place at school, even when we don’t always agree. Family-school partnerships are strongest when parents stand behind the difficult decisions that teachers make, even though the wisdom behind them may not be immediately evident. Sometimes, we all have to stand back and trust a process that’s been in put in place, particularly when it’s been implemented after a great deal of thought and diligence.

Term 3 Dance Program

Dear Parents,

As a mandatory part of the Creative Arts curriculum, this term all students will be participating in a whole school dance program organised by an experienced external provider, ‘Dancefever Multisport’. Dancefever Multisport has been teaching dance and physical education programs in primary schools since 1999 and are currently teaching in over 750 schools across NSW. Dancefever will provide two accredited dance staff who will teach the students Hip Hop, Jive, Tango, and contemporary and creative compositions. The program is structured for all ages and abilities and the students will not only learn dance routines and theory, but will also learn to interact and demonstrate appropriate social skills. Depending on your child’s class, the program will take place in the school hall or playground on Wednesdays and Thursdays starting on Wednesday 22 July 2020. Towards the end of term 3, we will be filming the students performing their newly learnt dance routines and will send this electronically to parents. This date will be provided to parents through the school newsletter. Please complete the permission note below and return it to the school office by Friday 7 August with the payment of $45 for a one child family. Given the current financial hardships for families, the cost for two or more children is $65 in total. In keeping with our increased hygiene practices, we ask that you pay online with the secure Parent Online Payment (POP). Funds are also available to support families in need. Please contact the school if we can help. Thank you for your support of this excellent school initiative bringing skilled dance instructors into the school.
