Renewable energy sources in Estonia
Made by Kerli kelder,Jaana Jürimaa,Kaija Ilves
Wind Power
• The wind energy could cover 10% of energy need in Estonia
• The avarage windspeed is 4 to 5 m/s• Good locations for producing wind energy: Vormsi
& Pakri, Naissaar, Ruhnu & Sõru, Vilsandi & Osmussaar
• Excisting windmills: Tahkuna (1997), Virtsu wind park (2002), Sõrve (2002)
• Potential windmills in the future: Pärnu, Paldiski & Türisalu cliff
Water Energy
• The hydroenergetic potential of Estonian rivers is only 1-2 %
• It would be possible to restore about 200 watermills
• Water energy was again taken into use in 1991• Restored hydropower stations: Saesaare (1991),
Leevaku (1993), Kotka, Kamari, Räpina, Tudulinna etc
• There is a hydropower station on Narva water reservoir but it’s energy goes to Russia
Leevaku Hydropower Station
• It was built by young people from Võru county• The engineer was Alfred Hanson (graduated Oxford University)• It was put into operation on 5th November 1947
Leevaku Hydropower Station
• Was turned over to the firm “Generaator” and they have restored it
• On 17th Nowember 1993 it was officially opened
• It was founded on the River Võhandu
• Max. capacity is 100kW
Leevaku Hydropower Station
• “Hurtful Light” – a rock opera for its builders
• “The Brigade of Järvesuu Boys” – a poem by Juhan Smuul, in honour of Leivaku HPS
• Was turned into a museum on 27th November, 1973
Water-mills
• On larger rivers or more steep parts of rivers (South of Estonia)
• First mentioned in the 13th century
• 758 water-mills in 1939
• Many mills destroyed in the II World War
Why to restore?
• For getting electric energy
(sustainable development!)
• To be used for making flour or sawdust
• As a turist-attraction
Biogas
• Estonian biogas is made from dung and waste mud
• Is made at Pääsküla dump, in piggeries and poultry-farms
Energy Bush
• Grows at Kambja, Võhnja, Kihlvere
• Species of trees: willow, alder, asp
State Politics
• Oil-shale will end soon – using renewable energy is favoured
• The ‘Green Energy’ project
