BROADCAST INFORMATION

Kansas City holds a 51-50-1 (.505) all-time advantage over San Diego in regular and postseason play. All 51 of those victories against San Diego have come in regular season play. The only teams the Chiefs have defeated more frequently are Denver (55) and Oakland (52). The Chiefs opened the 2010 campaign with a 21-14 win against the Chargers on Monday Night Football in the fi rst regular season contest at the New Arrowhead (9/13). The Chiefs most recent victory in San Diego was a 30-16 decision (9/30/07).

The home team has won 21 of the last 30 games in this series dating back to ’96. San Diego holds an 11-5 (.688) advantage over the Chiefs in San Diego since ’95, including the last three contests. Kansas City owns an 11-5 (.688) record against the Chargers at Arrowhead dating back to ’95. The Chiefs and Chargers have met just one time in postseason play. San Diego claimed a win in the lone playoff tilt between the two clubs, registering a 17-0 victory in a ’92 AFC Wild Card Playoff Game at San Diego (1/2/93).

Kansas City ended San Diego’s four-year run as AFC West Champions in 2010 with a 10-6 record. The Chiefs held off a late run from the Chargers a year ago, as San Diego won seven of its last nine games to end the season with a 9-7 record. Both teams are coming off of road losses from last weekend as Kansas City dropped to 0-2 on the season and San Diego fell to 1-1. The 2010 season marked a turning point for the Chiefs franchise as Kansas City turned in a 10-6 record after a 4-12 performance in 2009. It marked the best single-season turnaround in franchise history. The Chiefs won the AFC West Championship and earned a home playoff game for the fi rst time since 2003. San Diego pulled off the rare double-double a year ago by leading the NFL in both total offense and total defense. The squad allowed fi ve return scores on special teams, including a 94-yard punt return by Chiefs WR Dexter McCluster on Monday Night Football at the grand opening of the New Arrowhead (9/13). QB Philip Rivers has thrown for 713 passing yards in his fi rst two games in 2011 while RB Mike Tolbert leads the NFL with 17 receptions with two receiving TDs. Kansas City ranked in the NFL’s top 10 in 10 different categories at the end of the 2010 season. The Chiefs won the league’s rushing title, registering 2,627 rushing yards. On the road in 2010, the Chiefs gained 1,164 rushing yards to rank fi fth in the league. The Chiefs fi nished 11th in the NFL a year ago, allowing 326 total points. Kansas City only allowed its opponents to score on 28.1% of their offensive drives, the seventh-lowest mark in the NFL. CB Brandon Flowers, LB Derrick Johnson and S Eric Berry each returned an interception for a touchdown. QB Matt Cassel is in his third season at the helm of the offense after garnering a Pro Bowl invite a year ago. RB Thomas Jones tallied 896 rushing yards in 2010 to become the fi rst player in NFL history to produce 500 or more rushing yards fi ve different franchises. WR Dwayne Bowe added 1,162 receiving yards with a league-high 15 receiving TDs a year ago. Kansas City ends its two-game road trip and returns home for a contest with the Minnesota Vikings on Sunday, Oct. 2 at Noon (CT). San Diego hosts Miami on Sunday, Oct. 2 at 3:15 p.m. (CT).

CLOSE GAMES

Chiefs-Chargers matchups are traditionally closely-contested battles. Excluding one tie between the two teams, a total of 12 games in this series have been decided by exactly one point, including two games in 2008. Those 12 one-point games are the most of any series in the league since ’60. Dating back to 2000, 12 of the 22 contests have been decided by seven points or less. The teams are deadlocked at 6-6 in those contests. In the 256 games in the NFL a year ago, 121 of those were separated by seven points or less (47.3%). The Chiefs were 2-1 in games that were decided by three points or less. In the fi rst two weeks of the 2011 regular season, 13 of 32 contests (40.6%) were seperated by seven points or less.

CONTROLLING THE GROUND GAME

Dating back to 2010, Kansas City has produced a league-high 160.3 rushing yards per game. During that time period, the Chiefs have totaled 2,886 rushing yards and 13 TDs on 603 carries. Kansas City is 10-3 when outrushing its opponents since 2010, but has lost fi ve-consecutive games when being outgained on the ground. A year ago, the Chiefs ranked second in the NFL with 72 runs of 10+ yards. Only Philadelphia (73) had more. RB Jamaal Charles led the NFL with 45 carries of 10+ yards. In 2011, the Chiefs are averaging 129.5 rushing yards per games to rank seventh in the NFL. Kansas City is on pace for 2,072 rushing yards this season. It would mark the second-consecutive season the team topped the 2,000-yard plateau. Last week at Detroit (9/18), the club gained 151 yards on the ground on 29 attempts for a 5.2 yards per carry average. The club’s 5.5 ypc avg. for the season is fi fth in the NFL. RB Thomas Jones and RB Le’Ron McClain have each recorded a 900-yard rushing season. Kansas City’s ground game produced 2,627 rushing yards a year ago, ranking fi rst in the NFL. The team’s 164.2 rushing yards per game in 2010 was the fourth-best seasonal mark in Chiefs annals. It marked the fi rst time the Chiefs had led the NFL in rushing since averaging 138.9 rushing yards per game in ’95. The Kansas City defense improved in the run game in 2010 compared to 2009. The club ranked 14th in the NFL, allowing 110.3 rushing yards per game, a decrease of 46.2 yards from 2009. Opponents only scored 11 rushing touchdowns vs. the Chiefs in 2010. The Chargers rank 26th in the NFL in 2011, allowing 126.5 rushing yards per game. San Diego is permitting 5.0 yards per carry to stand 27th in the league. San Diego allowed 159 rushing yards vs. Minnesota (9/11) in its fi rst home game. A year ago the Chargers ranked fourth in the league by allowing 93.8 ypg. The club permitted 52 carries for 251 yards and three TDs in a 28-13 loss vs. Oakland (12/5/10). That contest marked just the 11th time since the AFL-NFL merger that SD had allowed 250+ rushing yards in a single contest. Dating back to 2010, San Diego has permitted 82.4 ypg game in its 10 wins, but has allowed 140 or more rushing yards in its last two victories. In its eight losses, the club has permitted 116.1 rushing yards per game.

PROTECTING THE FOOTBALL

Head Coach Todd Haley is the sixth coach in Chiefs history to post a positive turnover ratio in both of his fi rst two seasons. The Chiefs fi nished 2010 tied for fi fth in the NFL with a +9 turnover differential (23 takes/14 gives). The four teams with a better turnover differential were all 2010 playoff qualifi ers, including the top two seeds in the AFC playoffs (New England, Pittsburgh). Kansas City’s +9 mark was an eight-turnover improvement over the club’s 2009 mark of +1. The Chiefs were 5-2 with a positive turnover margin in 2010, including a 2-2 record on the road. PROTECTING THE PASSER

0-2 TO THE PLAYOFFS

Dating back to ’90, 22 teams have started the regular season with an 0-2 record and have still qualifi ed for the playoffs. The list includes the 2006 Chiefs, who earned an AFC Wild Card berth and the 2003 Eagles, who reached the NFC Championship Game. Chiefs GM Scott Pioli and Head Coach Todd Haley were both members of the N.Y. Jets organization in ’98 when the Jets rebounded from an 0-2 start to reach the AFC Championship Game. Pioli served as New England’s Director of Player Personnel in 2001 when the Patriots started 0-2 and went on to win Super Bowl XXXVI. The ’93 Cowboys, 2001 Patriots and 2007 N.Y. Giants are the only three squads since ’90 that have started 0-2 and have won the Super Bowl. Of the 22 teams to start 0-2 since ’90 and still qualify for the playoffs, 19 of those teams have won their third regular season game.

Kansas City produced a 100-yard rusher in six games in 2010, posting a 5-1 record in those contests. RB Thomas Jones had a pair of 100-yard rushing games in 2010 with the Chiefs going 1-1 in those contests. The 12-year veteran has 34 career 100-yard rushing games with his teams posting a 20-14 record in those games. RB Le’Ron McClain had a career-high 139 rushing yards at Dallas (12/20/08) while with Baltimore. Under Head Coach Norv Turner, San Diego is 12-2 when producing a 100-yard rusher, winning all four such contests in 2010. RB Ryan Mathews has one 100-yard rushing game to his name, producing 120 yards at Denver (1/2/11). Dating back to 2007, the Chargers are 4-8 when allowing an opposing ball carrier to produce a 100-yard game.

The Chiefs defense did force a pair of takeaways as S Eric Berry registered an INT and LB Tamba Hali produced a sack and strip, but Kansas City was unable to convert either of those opportunities into points. Kansas City won the toss and elected to receive. QB Brodie Croyle made his first start since Opening Day of the 2009 campaign, replacing QB Matt Cassel, who underwent an appendectomy early in the week. The Chiefs came out and attempted to establish the running game early but were forced to punt on their first possession. The Chargers took over at their own 33-yard line. On third and one QB Philip Rivers handed off to WR Vincent Jackson on an end around for 14 yards into Chiefs territory. A four-yard scramble on third and two gave the Chargers a fresh set of downs at KC’s 32. Rivers connected with Jackson for 10 yards on third down, moving the chains once again. The very next play Rivers found WR Malcom Floyd on a fade in the back corner of the end zone for a 17-yard TD pass to give the Chargers a 7-0 lead with 5:39 remaining in the opening quarter. Both teams went punt for punt before the Chargers constructed another scoring march. RB Mike Tolbert took a handoff around the left side into the end zone advancing the Chargers lead to 14-0. After a Kansas City punt the Chargers drove into Chiefs territory and an 18-yard gain from RB Darren Sproles moved the Chargers to the KC nine. On the next play Rivers hit Floyd in the corner of the end zone for a nine-yard TD. The catch went under review and the call on the field was upheld, putting the Chargers in front by a 21-0 margin. KC got the ball back, but Croyle was sacked on the final play of the half. The Chargers received the second-half kickoff and converted two third and longs to push into KC territory. Rivers completed three consecutive passes before Berry intercepted the ball near the sideline at the KC 16. The Chargers challenged the call on the field, but the ruling was upheld and KC took over. The Chiefs were unable to capitalize on the turnover and went three and out. Kansas City’s defense again came up big when Hali sacked Rivers, forcing a fumble that was recovered by DE Wallace Gilberry at the Chargers 37. The Chiefs were unable to capitalize on the turnover and punted the ball back to San Diego. The score remained 21-0 in favor of San Diego entering the fourth quarter. A sack by DE Tyson Jackson at the Chiefs 28 forced a 48-yard FG by K Nate Kaeding. That score pushed the Chargers lead to 24-0 with 8:30 remaining. Chargers CB Antoine Cason returned a Chiefs punt down the sideline 42 yard to the KC 36. The Chiefs challenged the player stepping out of bounds, but the ruling on the field stood and San Diego took over in KC territory. Sproles rumbled up the middle for 15 yards to the Kansas City 17. Four plays later RB Ryan Mathews scored on a 15-yard TD run, giving the Chargers a 31-0 lead with 3:23 to play. QB Tyler Palko took the helm for the remainder of the game, but the Chiefs were unable to score leaving the final count at 31-0 in favor of San Diego.

2011 CHIEFS GAME-BY-GAME DEFENSE

THE LAST GAMELions 48, Chiefs 3Lions 48, Chiefs 3

September 18, 2011 • Ford Field • 60,040

The Kansas City defense could not hold the Lions back as Detroit used a stout passing attack to rack up 322 yards through the air en route to a 48-3 Week 2 victory over the Chiefs at Ford Field. Kansas City had six turnovers and committed eight penalties for 70 yards in the loss. QB Matt Stafford completed 23 of 39 passes for 294 yards and had four touchdowns for the Lions as they outgained the Chiefs 411-to-267 in total yards. The Chiefs outgained the Lions on the ground, registering 151 yards to the Lions 89 yards. During the opening drive of the game, Chiefs S Jon McGraw intercepted a Stafford pass but fumbled the ball on the return, giving the ball back to the Lions. Following the fumble, Kansas City committed unnecessary roughness and roughing the passer penalties, setting up the Detroit scoring strike. The Chiefs took over after the kickoff on their own 20-yard line. RB Dexter McCluster picked up 24 yards on an end-around. After his own 24-yard run, RB Jamaal Charles tried to run for a first down and injured his knee on the play and would not return to the contest. K Ryan Succop connected on a 33-yard FG, making the score 7-3 with 8:00 to go in the first quarter. After a Detroit punt, Kansas City drove the ball into Lions territory, but were unable to capitalize as Succop’s 44-yard field goal attempt missed wide left. The Chiefs faced fourth and one after getting to midfied but were penalized five yards for having 12 men in the huddle and elected to punt. The Kansas City defense forced a Detroit three and out but on the Lions punt, a 15-yard roughing the kicker penalty kept the Lions drive alive. On third and one, McGraw and CB Brandon Flowers stuffed Detroit RB Jerome Harrison for no gain, forcing a Lions punt. Starting in Kansas City territory after a KC punt, Stafford took only two plays before connecting with TE Tony Scheffler for a 36-yard TD to make the score 14-3 in favor of Detroit with 5:50 left in the first half. After an INT that went through the hands of WR Dwayne Bowe, Detroit converted on third and 24, setting up a 51-yard field goal from K Jason Hanson, putting the Lions up 17-3 with 1:07 left in the first half. On the Chiefs next drive, Cassel’s pass for WR Jerheme Urban went through the receiver’s hands. This time the turnover set up a 28-yard Hanson field goal just before halftime, giving Detroit the 20-3 lead. After another KC punt, Stafford completed passes of 27 and 35 yards before hitting WR Calvin Johnson for a one-yard TD on fourth and one, extending the lead to 27-3 with 1:17 left in the third. On the Chiefs next offensive play, Cassel had the ball knocked out of his hand was it was picked up by LB Stephen Tulloch deep in Kansas City territory. Two plays later, Stafford found Best for a nine-yard touchdown strike, putting Detroit up 34-3 with 14:49 left to play in the contest. On the second play of the next drive, Cassel hit McCluster out of the backfield but as he dove for extra yards, CB Eric Wright knocked the ball out of McCluster’s hands and it was recovered by DE Cliff Avril at the Chiefs 18-yard line. From there, Detroit covered 18 yards in six plays. An unnecessary roughness penalty on the Chiefs gave the Lions a first down. Best then dove over the goalline to put Detroit up 41-3 with 11:31 left in the game. Cassel’s pass on third and five was intercepted at the KC 38-yard line and was returned four yards to the 34-yard line. RB Keiland Williams wrapped up the day's scoring with a one-yard TD run, putting the Lions up 48-3 with 5:06 left to play in the game.
