SAN DIEGO CHARGERS (2-3) VS. KANSAS CITY CHIEFS (1-5) REGULAR SEASON GAME #7 SUNDAY, OCTOBER 25, 2009 – 12:00 PM (CENTRAL) ARROWHEAD STADIUM – KANSAS CITY, MISSOURI 2009 Stats and NFL Rankings THE SERIES THE MATCH-UP The Chiefs face the Chargers for the initial time this season when Kansas City hosts San Diego at Arrowhead Stadium on Sunday. In celebration of the 50th anniversary of the American Football League, both squads will wear classic uniforms for this contest. The Chiefs will play as the ’62 Dallas Texans, a unit that captured the first of three league titles for Hank Stram. Much has changed for the Chiefs since these two teams last met. Kansas City’s football fortunes are now under the direction of General Manager Scott Pioli and head coach Todd Haley. KC registered its initial victory of the Pioli/ Haley era last week as the Chiefs recorded a 14-6 win at Washington (10/18). The Chiefs defense permitted just seven first downs in that contest, the fewest Kansas City had given up since allowing six first downs in a 23-7 win vs. San Diego (9/20/98). The win marked the fewest points relinquished by the Chiefs since KC registered a 41-0 victory vs. San Francisco (10/1/06). KC’s defense permitted Washington to convert 14.3% (2 of 14) of its third downs. QB Matt Cassel has now attempted 132 consecutive passes without an INT, the third-longest streak in the league behind Washington QB Todd Collins (217) and New England QB Tom Brady (176). Haley’s squad is now charged with the task of constructing back-to-back victories, a feat Kansas City last accomplished in the final two games of the 2006 campaign. Last year, the Chiefs lost a pair of one-point games to San Diego. Dating back to the AFL’s inaugural season in ’60, no series in pro football has featured more one-point games than the bi-annual Chiefs-Chargers tussle. Excluding ties, 12 contests in this division duel have been decided by a single point, including both contests in 2008. The Chargers (2-3) enter this week’s game attempting to stay within striking distance of Broncos (6-0) in the division standings. San Diego is coming off a 34-23 loss vs. Denver (10/19) on Monday Night Football. The Chargers are seeking to become the first club to secure four straight AFC West crowns since Oakland accomplished the feat five straight years from ’72-76. KC is attempting to claw back into the division race with four AFC West contests still looming after next week’s bye week. Up next for San Diego is a home contest vs. Oakland (11/1). The Chiefs resume their schedule at Jacksonville (11/8). Excluding one tie between the two teams, a total of 12 games in this series have been decided by exactly one point, including the last two meetings. Those 12 one-point games are the most of any series in the league since ’60. 50 YEARS OF CHIEFS FOOTBALL

August 14, 1959 when less than two weeks after his 27th birthday, Lamar Hunt called to order a meeting in Chicago.

• On April 8, 1966, Hunt and Cowboys executive Tex Schramm met in Dallas beginning merger negotiations that culminated on June 8, 1966.

• The Chiefs will participate in three “AFL Rivalry Games” and will wear classic Dallas Texans uniforms from their ’62 AFL Championship season vs. Dallas (10/11), vs. San Diego (10/25) and at Oakland (11/15).

The rich 50-year history of the Chiefs began in Lamar Hunt’s hometown of Dallas, when Hunt founded the American Football League in ’59. His Dallas Texans franchise anchored the fl edgling league. In ’62, the franchise won the fi rst of three AFL titles under head coach Hank Stram, thanks to NFL castoff QB Len Dawson and a host of other talented performers. To honor their lineage, the Chiefs will wear replicas of their ’62 uniforms for three games in 2009.

The club’s helmet will feature a gray facemask, as well as the outline of the state of Texas with a gold star on Dallas. While the club’s pants have remained virtually unchanged over the years, the striping of the socks has been altered to match the ’62 look. In addition, the gold trim around the numerals and lettering on these classic uniforms is more narrow than it appears on current Chiefs jerseys.

Norv Turner was named the 14th head coach in Chargers history on February 19, 2007 after spending the 2006 campaign as San Francisco’s offensive coordinator. He guided San Diego to an 11-5 record and a berth in the AFC Championship Game two years ago, and turned in an 8-8 record with the Chargers in 2008. Turner’s 24 years of coaching experience include 11 as a head coach with three different franchises. He guided AFC West rival Oakland for two seasons (2004-05) and spent seven seasons (’94-00) as head coach of Washington, guiding the Redskins to a 10-6 record and an NFC East title in ’99. The Lejeune, North Carolina native previously served as offensive coordinator in Miami (2002-03), San Diego (2001) and Dallas (’91-93) where he earned Super Bowl XXVII and XXVIII rings. Prior to joining Dallas, Turner coached six years (’85-90) with the L.A. Rams, tutoring both the receivers and tight ends. He spent nine seasons (’76-84) at USC and was part of the Trojans ’78 National Championship squad and four Rose Bowl teams. He entered the coaching profession as a graduate assistant with Oregon in ’75. A HISTORY OF CLOSE CALLS: ONE-POINT KC/SD GAMES In the 50-year history of the Chiefs-Chargers series, there have been 12 games decided by a single point, the highest total of any series in pro football over that span. There has also been one tie in the series, a 10-10 contest at San Diego (9/26/65). Interestingly, the fi rst and last game of this original AFL West duel were both decided by a single point. San Diego has won its last six single-point decisions against Kansas City.

KC Needs Another Solid Showing in the Turnover Department Kansas City is currently tied with Minnesota and New England for the NFL lead with four giveaways. Those two teams own a combined 10-2 record. The Chiefs have been even or positive in four straight games, going a combined +5 (7 takes/2 gives) over that span. KC has gone two straight weeks without commiting a turnover and currently ranks third in the AFC with a +4 turnover ratio (8 takes/4 gives). Only New England (+8) and Denver (+7) are better. The Chiefs are also tied for the NFL lead with only two lost fumbles. Typically, a +2 turnover mark or better translates into a victory. This season, NFL teams that are +2 or better own a combined 32-6 (.842) record. KC was +2 (2 takes/0 gives) in a 14-6 win at Washington (10/18) and was +2 (2 takes/0 gives) in its last home contest vs. Dallas (10/11). The Chiefs are 46-8 (.852) at Arrowhead with a positive takeaway differential dating back to ’95. KC is a combined +10 (26 takes/16 gives) in its last 12 home games vs. SD. The Chargers are 39-5 (.886) with a positive turnover mark dating back to 2004, including a 16-3 (.842) record under Norv Turner. The Chargers are 10-47 (.175) with a negative turnover margin dating back to 2000. Last season, San Diego was a combined -4 (1 take/5 gives) in two games vs. Kansas City. 2009 NFL LEADERS 2009 AFC LEADERS 2009 NFL LEADERS FEWEST GIVES BEST TO RATIO FUMBLES LOST 1. Kansas City 4 1. Only Todd Collins, WAS (217) and Tom Brady, NE (176) own longer active streaks without an interception. Only Denver (1) has thrown fewer INTs than Kansas City (2) this season. Thanks to Cassel, Kansas City currently ranks third in the league with a 1.1 INT%. Only Denver (0.5) and New England (0.8%) are better. The Chiefs +7 TD-to-INT differential is seventh in the league, while the club’s 4.8 TD% is tied for 11th in the league. Through six games in 2009, KC has thrown nine TDs and just two INTs, for an 87.2 passer rating. Through six games in 2008, KC had thrown four TDs and eight INTs for a 58.6 rating. Cassel owns a 4-1 record when he compiles a 100.0 rating or higher (min. 20 atts.). San Diego has lost 10 of its last 11 games when allowing an opposing passer to post a rating of 100.0 or better. Denver QB Kyle Orton compiled a 115.4 rating in a 34-23 win at San Diego (10/19). A Duel For Punting Superiority Between Colquitt, Scifres Since the AFL-NFL merger in ’70, San Diego P Mike Scifres (38.98) owns the NFL’s best career net punting average. Kansas City P Dustin Colquitt is a close second in that department at 38.76, while Oakland P Shane Lechler is fi fth at 38.01. Colquitt owns the KC career record with 120 punts inside the 20-yard line, including 16 this season. Only Cleveland P Dave Zastudil (20) has more. Colquitt is on pace to fi nish the year with 42 punts inside the 20 which would shatter P Louie Aguiar’s KC single-season record of 29 set in ’95. During the 2009 campaign, only Lechler (44.50) owns a better net than Colquitt (43.74). No punter in the league this year has permitted fewer return yards than Colquitt (44) and no team owns a better mark in opp. punt return average than KC (2.8). Chiefs-Chargers Rushing Stats Since the start of the 2003 campaign, Kansas City is 18-4 (.818) when it boasts a 100-yard back at Arrowhead, including a 15-1 (.938) mark when RB Larry Johnson accomplishes that feat. Johnson needs 124 yards this week to become the all-time leading rusher in KC history. Dating back to ’97, the Chargers are just 6-28 (.176) when allowing a 100-yard back, including four straight losses. Dating back to 2005, Johnson owns 45 rushing TDs, a total topped in the NFL by only Chargers RB LaDainian Tomlinson (73). Johnson registered a season-high 83 rushing yards in a 14-6 win at Washington (10/18). The Chargers are tied for 31st in the NFL in rushing, averaging just 57.6 ypg. San Diego has been held under 100 team rushing yards in all fi ve of its games this season. KC is tied for ninth in the NFL with 20 runs of 10+ yards, while SD is 32nd with fi ve runs of 10+ yards. SD is 36-10 (.783) when Tomlinson tops the 100-yard mark, a feat he hasn’t accomplished since registering 105 yards at New Orleans (10/26/08). Tomlinson was held to a combined 37 carries for 117 yards and one TD in a pair of contests vs. KC in 2008. San Diego is 30-1 (.968) when rushing 30 times or more dating back to 2005, including 21 consecutive victories. San Diego has yet to accomplish that feat in 2009 and has averaged just 20.2 rushing attempts per game over its fi rst fi ve contests. Bowe, Gates Headline Key Performers in the Passing Game In four career starts vs. SD, Chiefs WR Dwayne Bowe owns 25 catches for 335 yards with two TDs. He had 109 yards at Washington (10/18), the second-highest tally of his career behind a 164-yard effort at SD (9/30/07). TE Antonio Gates owns 56 catches for 630 yards with nine TDs in 10 starts vs. KC, but has scored just once in his last fi ve appearances against the Chiefs. SD’s foes have thrown eight TDs and just four INTs for 225.8 ypg and a 92.2 passer rating.

Close Calls Have Been Frequent For Chiefs, Chargers Dating back to 2000, the Chiefs-Chargers series is deadlocked at 9-9. Over that span, 11 of those 18 contests have been decided by seven points or less with the Chargers holding a slim 6-5 edge in those 11 close games. Winning tight games will be criticial for both KC and SD this season. Dating back to 2008, the Chiefs are 1-9 (.100) in games decided by seven points or less. Over that same span, the Chargers are 3-8 (.273) in contests decided by the same margin with two of those SD wins coming against KC. SD won 24-20 at Oakland (9/14) and lost 31-26 vs. Baltimore (9/20). KC Seeks to Regain Its Arrrowhead Advantage vs. the AFC West The Chiefs have registered at least one home victory vs. an AFC West opponent every year dating back to ’78. Four of KC’s last seven victories have come against AFC West opponents. The Chargers are 3-9 at Arrowhead dating back to ’97 and are 4-6 on the road since the start of the 2008 campaign. The Chargers have lost eight straight games in KC in the month of October, including an 0-6 all-time mark at Arrowhead. It’s been 46 years since SD’s only October win in KC, a 38-17 victory at Municipal Stadium (10/20/63). SD is 11-3 (.786) in division play since 2007 with wins in six of its last seven division games. The Chiefs Need Two Solid Halves vs. San Diego Teams leading at the half have won 15 of the last 21 games in the Chiefs-Chargers series dating back to ’97. KC has either been tied or ahead of SD at halftime in its last 12 home meetings, owning a 200-to-63 fi rst-half scoring advantage in those games. KC has led at the half in its last two contests, outscoring Dallas and Washington by a combined 13-3 margin. SD hasn’t held a halftime lead at Arrowhead since ’96. However, the Chargers have won three in a row vs. the Chiefs and have outscored KC by a combined 34-point margin (47-13) in the second half of those games. The last time KC outscored the Chargers in the second half was a 30-16 victory at San Diego (9/30/07) when the Chiefs held a 24-0 scoring edge after halftime. KC has scored an NFL-low six points in the fi rst quarter and has been outscored by a 25-point margin (31-6) in the opening quarter. Only Tennessee (48-20) has been outscored by a bigger margin in the fi rst quarter. San Diego has been outscored by an 15-point margin (35-20) in the fi rst quarter. The Chargers own a 39-8 (.830) regular season record when leading at halftime dating back to 2004, including wins in 14 of their last 16 such contests. The Chargers are just 4-9 (.308) when tied or trailing at the half dating back to 2008. SD led 20-17 at halftime in a 34-23 loss vs. Denver (10/19). The Chiefs and Chargers own almost identical scoring numbers in the fi rst half. Kansas City has been outscored by a 24-point margin (57-33), while San Diego owns a 23-point (72-49) scoring defi cit in the fi rst half. However, KC and SD are among the NFL’s best in terms of fourth-quarter scoring. Only Baltimore (66) and Minnesota (56) have scored more points in the fourth quarter than Kansas City (52) and San Diego (51). Exactly 53.1% (52 of 98) of KC’s points have come in the fourth quarter, while 41.1% (51 of 124) of SD’s total points have come in the fi nal frame. KC has allowed 52 points in the fourth quarter, while SD allowed 40 fourth-quarter points. Chiefs Defense Set to Square Off Against QB Philip Rivers QB Philip Rivers is seeking to become the fi rst San Diego signal caller to guide the Chargers to three straight victories at Arrowhead since QB Dan Fouts did it in ’79-81. Rivers owns a 12-2 record as a starter vs. the rest of the AFC West, but is just 4-2 vs. KC. Rivers owns a combined 21 TDs, eight INTs and an 100.9 rating in his 14 starts against Denver and Oakland, but has posted just seven TDs, nine INTs and a 71.6 rating in six starts vs. Kansas City. Rivers has suffered at least one INT in all six of those starts against the Chiefs and has been picked off twice in three of those games. Dating back to ’95, KC is 8-2 at Arrowhead vs. SD when forcing at least one INT. The Chiefs are 33-4 (.892) at Arrowhead dating back to ’95 against all foes when forcing two or more INTs. KC has won 10 straight at Arrowhead against the Chargers when registering two or more INTs.

KC has allowed 16.0 ppg in its last two contests, allowing just six points at Washington (10/18). Dating back to 2000, San Diego is 4-41 (.089) when being held to 17 points or less, including a streak of eight straight losses. Over that same timeframe, the Chargers are 2-26 (.071) on the road when being held to 17 points or less, including a string of 10 straight losses. SD’s last road win in such a circumstance was a 17-6 victory at Carolina (10/24/04). A high-scoring contest would tip the scales in favor of San Diego. Dating back to 2005, the Chargers are 22-2 (.917) when scoring 30 points or more. However, San Diego has yet to top the 30-point plateau this season. The Chargers are averaging 24.8 ppg in 2009 after racking up 37.3 ppg during a four-game winning streak to round out the 2008 regular season. The Chargers have hit the 30-point mark just once in their last 22 visits to KC, claiming a 34-31 win at Arrowhead (11/28/04).

THE LAST TIMECChargershargers 22, 22, ChiefsChiefs 2121

December 14, 2008 • Arrowhead Stadium • 73,842

Despite trailing by 11 points with under five minutes to play, San Diego scored a late TD, recovered an onside kick, scored again and survived one final Chiefs FG attempt to leave Arrowhead with an improbable 22-21 victory, the 12th one-point game in the Chiefs-Chargers series. The Chargers won the toss and picked up one first down before kicking the ball away to the Chiefs, who orchestrated a masterful opening drive. Taking over at their own four-yard line, the Chiefs offense moved down the field under the direction of QB Tyler Thigpen and chewed up 96 yards on 15 plays and used nearly eight minutes of the first-quarter clock. The Chiefs picked up seven first downs in the possession before RB Larry Johnson lofted a four-yard TD pass on a halfback option to TE Tony Gonzalez for a 7-0 lead. The Chiefs opened the second quarter with another nice drive, but stalled in San Diego scoring territory and K Connor Barth missed a 34-yard FG attempt wide left, his first misfire of the season. On the Chargers next possession, the Kansas City defense registered a turnover as DE Tamba Hali registered a sack, strip and fumble recovery of QB Philip Rivers. But Thigpen turned the ball back over to San Diego when he threw an INT in the end zone four plays later. The Chiefs defense got the ball back, however, by forcing another Chargers turnover. This time Rivers completed a pass to Jackson who fumbled at the end of the play and the ball was recovered by S Bernard Pollard. Thigpen then moved the offense on a 54-yard TD drive capped off with a one-yard TD pass from Thigpen to WR Dwayne Bowe to give the Chiefs a 14-0 lead. RB Darren Sproles then set San Diego up with good field position with a 38-yard kickoff return, giving the Chargers the ball at their own 48-yard line. K Nate Kaeding would hit a 32-yard FG and the Chiefs lead was cut to 14-3 at halftime. The Chiefs opened the second half with the football, but it was the Kansas City defense that made the first big play of the third quarter. The Chargers had a third-and-six play at the Chiefs 48-yard line, when CB Pat Surtain stepped in front of a Rivers throw and then ran the INT back 50 yards to the San Diego three-yard line. Thigpen scored on a quarterback draw on the next play, giving Kansas City a 21-3 lead. San Diego came right back with its first TD drive of the game. A six-yard TD run from RB LaDainian Tomlinson cut the Chiefs lead to 21-10 as the Chargers began a furious rally. After the two teams traded seven possessions, San Diego got the ball back at its own 11-yard line with 4:55 left to play, setting up the game’s frenetic finish. A 15-play, 89-yard drive ended with a four-yard scoring pass from Rivers to WR Malcom Floyd. The Chargers went for two points, but could not convert, making the count 21-16 with 1:19 remaining. Chargers P Mike Scifres then tried an onside kick. The ball looked as if it was secured in the air by Bowe, but Chargers WR Kassim Osgood came out of the scrum with the football at the Chargers 39-yard line. Rivers drove the offense in just four plays for the winning points, a 10-yard TD pass to Jackson. The Chargers again went for two points, but failed and held a 22-21 lead with 0:36 to play. With no timeouts remaining, the Chiefs were able to move the ball to the San Diego 32-yard line. After the Chargers were called for a delay of game penalty, the Chiefs were given one final attempt to register a win. But Barth’s 50-yard FG attempt went wide left, allowing the Chargers to overcome an 18-point deficit for the victory.

The Chiefs registered their initial victory under General Manager Scott Pioli and head coach Todd Haley with solid performances in all three phases of the game. Rookie K Ryan Succop nailed a career-high four FGs, including a 46-yarder with 3:36 left to give the Chiefs a 9-6 lead. He added a 24-yard FG with 0:41 left to give the Chiefs the 12-6 lead, while LB Tamba Hali sacked QB Todd Collins in the end zone with 0:26 remaining to make the final count 14-6. Kansas City’s defense was stifling for most of the afternoon, permitting just seven first downs, the club’s best single-game total in over a decade. The Chiefs also held a significant margin in the time of possession battle (37:10 to 22:50). It was punt-for-punt before Kansas City put together its first scoring drive of the afternoon. RB Larry Johnson turned in his longest rush from scrimmage this season as he scampered 17 yards off the right tackle. Six plays later, Succop hit a 39-yard FG to give the Chiefs the 3-0 lead with 5:34 left in the second quarter. With time winding down in the first half, Washington went into its two-minute offense, but the Redskins opted to forgo a 54-yard FG attempt and instead went for the end zone. QB Jason Campbell’s pass was intercepted by CB Brandon Flowers at the three-yard line, locking in a 3-0 Chiefs advantage at halftime. Washington opened the second half with QB Todd Collins under center. Two plays into the third quarter, Collins hit WR Santana Moss for 42 yards to the Kansas City 27-yard line setting up K Shaun Suisham’s 40-yard FG that tied the game at 3-3. On the ensuing Redskins drive, RB Clinton Portis broke free for a 78-yard rush before he was hauled down by S Mike Brown at Kansas City’s 10-yard line. From there, Washington threw three straight incompletions, setting up Suisham for a 28-yard FG that put his team up 6-3 with 6:06 left in the third period. Kansas City answered on its very next drive, orchestrating a nine-play drive that covered 42 yards and was capped by a 46-yard Succop FG, tying the game at 6-6 with 1:12 left in the third quarter, which would be the score heading into the final stanza. After unsuccessful drives by both squads, the Chiefs got on the move when QB Matt Cassel hit TE Sean Ryan for 11 yards and a first down, getting the ball to the Washington 25-yard line. Three plays later Succop connected on his third kick and second 46-yard FG of the day to give Kansas City a 9-6 lead with 3:36 left in the contest. After a Redskins punt, Kansas City took over at the Washington 37-yard line. Cassel hit WR Dwayne Bowe for a 32-yard completion to get the ball into the Red Zone inside the two-minute warning and setting up Succop for his fourth FG of the afternoon. Succop put his 24-yard attempt through the uprights, extending the Kansas City lead to 12-6 with 0:41 left in the game. After kicking off and a block in the back penalty by Washington, Hali sacked Collins in the end zone for a safety giving Kansas City a 14-6 lead with 0:26 left. Washington’s onside kick attempt was unsuccessful and Cassel was able to assemble the Chiefs in the victory formation for their initial win of 2009.

GAME NOTES• The Chiefs permitted seven first downs, the club’s best mark since allowing six vs. San Diego (9/20/98).• The Chiefs allowed six points, the club’s best total since posting a 41-0 win vs. San Francisco (10/1/06). • P Dustin Colquitt landed three punts inside the 20, giving him 120 for his career to bypass P Louie Aguiar (117) for the Chiefs all-time lead in that category.

Rookie K Ryan Succop drills a career-high four fi eld goals to lift Kansas city past Washington.
