ARTRAGEOUS!Las Patronas Jewel Ball 2007
In the Spirit of Giving
Each year, Las Patronas presents the Spirit of Giving award to salute the strong com-munity partnerships critical in helping Las Patronas fulfi ll its mission to aid the San Diego nonprofi t community. For 2006, Las Patronas presented the award at its annual Benefi ciary Lun-cheon to Chism Brothers Painting.
For over 15 years Chism Brothers Painting, led by owners Mike and Pat Chism, have shown up with their gear, goodwill and great humor to take direction from
50 women on “Paint-out Day.” Sprayers in hand, they work
hard to help Las Patronas erase the previous year’s ball and cre-ate a fresh palette for the new Jewel Ball theme.
Although we deeply missed our dear friend Pat, on hand to accept the award were Chism Brothers owner Mike Chism along with his son David, his wife Terry, and Pat’s widow Edna Mae.
Las Patronas is eternally grate-ful to Chism Brothers for their gen-erosity and Spirit of Giving!

A Lifetime of GenerosityFrom all accounts, Sharon
Siegener was a woman who be-lieved in giving of herself - her time, her talent and her treasure were all shared generously with the community in a manner we could all do well to emulate.
Sharon passed away in 2003 at the age of 59, but her incredible generosity lives on. The Las Patronas Endowment Fund was recently fortunate to become one of the major recipi-ents of her trust as well as other numerous worthy organizations both in Kansas and San Diego.
Sharon was born in Coronado but spent most of her youth in Florida. She attended the Sidwell Friends School and graduated from Rollins College, later serving on the Board of Directors.
After moving to La Jolla in 1967, Sharon became active in the community and was a mem-ber of the La Jolla Beach & Ten-nis Club and St. James by the Sea Episcopal Church. She also managed the Lilly Pulitzer shop in La Jolla for many years.
After serving just one year in Las Patronas, Sharon moved to Sedan, Kansas in 1989 to take over management of her family’s business, Rigdon & Bruen Oil Company. She split her time be-tween Sedan and La Jolla with-out missing a beat professionally or philanthropically.
In Sedan, Sharon became well known for her charitable giving and community service. Her love of animals led her Continued on back page

The splashes of color on these newslet-ter pages are an exciting visual sample of what’s in store for guests at Jewel Ball 2007. From the moment you arrive at the Ball, you will be immersed in a unique art experience!
Pop, surreal, abstract, and modern art will delight and surround you with color, form, humor, and beauty as we celebrate 61 years of giving with an ARTRAGEOUS explosion
of creativity and thought-provoking ideas! Each new year is a blank canvas, colored by the generosity of our
underwriters, donors, and advertisers. It is your support that enables us to make a profound difference in San Diego year after year. You are the reason we continue to succeed at helping so many worthy nonprofi t groups fulfi ll their missions, and we are so grateful to you.
A special thank-you to my family for your love, encouragement, and support. It has been an amazing creative journey (with a lot of time spent at the warehouse) which you’ve patiently allowed me to explore!
I am deeply grateful to my two co-chairs, Caroline and Lydia, who have shared their many talents, wisdom, and humor. It has been re-warding working with you! Thank you also to our president, Terry, for your leadership and all you do for Las Patronas. And I am inspired by this amazing group of 50 women. It is an honor to work side by side with you all year long to make the Jewel Ball happen.
I hope you will open your hearts, minds, and all your senses and join us at the La Jolla Beach & Tennis Club on August 4 for an ARTRAGEOUS evening replete with color, music, friends, food, and fun! You can dance the night away knowing you are spending the evening not only with fantastic food and music, but with friends who all believe in the same mission: to make a difference in all our lives and in the community we share.
See you at the Ball!
Kathryn Stephens, Chair, Jewel Ball 2007
1. Camp Fire USA San Diego and Imperial Counties Council builds caring, con-fident youth and future leaders. Las Patronas will fund a new 12-passenger van to transport low-income children in Oceanside and Chula Vista to after-school programs.
Major Beneficiaries of ARTRAGEOUS!Our grants process inspires and motivates us to work an entire year designing and creating a spectacular event. Proceeds from Jewel Ball underwriting, advertising, and donations allow organizations such as these to carry out their missions of service in San Diego. Each grant applicant must submit a proposal for critical capital need that includes financial documents, multiple bids and written support; the grants committee then schedules site visits with each potential beneficiary to learn about its mission, scope of work, and the lives affected.

The Fun Never Stops
Right: Jewel Ball 2007 Co-Chairs Lydia McNeil and Caroline Nierenberg.
We’ve Got Mad Jewel Ball SkillzAlong with a different theme each year, getting ready for the Jewel Ball gives us bound-
less opportunities for professional growth. Many of our members come to us with perfect, unblemished hands and without ever having painted a wall, much less operated power tools, but by the time they graduate they’ve got skills beyond compare. By our sixth year, most of us could construct a passable dwelling, and some could even outfit a working nightclub with lights, sound, and professional kitchen.
Over the years we’ve learned how to stencil, apply gold leaf, paint faux granite, slap on stucco, and much, much more. This year we’ve added a new skill to our repertoire: glass mosaic. Armed with nippers, glass cutters, and rather insidious charcoal grout, the entire membership of 50 has taken a turn at creating the fragmented figures you see below as part of Jewel Ball 2007’s art-based theme.
We hope you will enjoy our ARTRAGEOUS decor - just don’t check our manicures!
Many longtime Jewel Ball guests will tell you their favorite part of the evening is the cocktail hour. It is a feast for the senses, with delectable tidbits set like gems against a backdrop of beautiful gowns, laughing friends, and the gorgeous La Jolla sky. Here’s an ARTRAGEOUS tease:

For the last 20 years, Jim Roth and his techno crew from MSI Productions have lit up the night and brought the party to life with sizzling sound.
This talented group spends months in the planning and four grueling days and nights in August to give the Jewel Ball its glitter.
In his 20 years working with Las Patronas, Jim has seen it all – there is no challenge too great and no problem without an innovative solution. He’s become much more than a vendor providing a valuable service: he’s become a trusted friend.
Thank you, Jim and MSI!
Special Thanks to Jim Roth and MSI Productions
A Feast for the Eyes as well as the Palate
And of course, you’ll be able to sample our favorite sushi and seafood as well as a dazzling array of fabulous cocktails!
This is just a small preview of the delights that await, so bring your appetite but leave your diet at the door, for who can resist?
Our Mission:Las Patronas is committed to providing financial
assistance to nonprofit organizations in San Diego
County that provide valuable community services in
the areas of health, education, social services, and
cultural arts, and to continuing our tradition of service
to enhance the quality of life in our community.

Dear Friends, What an honor
it is to be the sixty-fi rst president of Las Patronas and to work with such an amazing group of women, both ac-tive and advisory, and their families!
During our 61 years, Las Patronas has witnessed signifi cant changes to our beloved San Diego County. While our County has grown in size and sophistica-tion, the need for assistance in our non-profi t sector has increased as well.
We are privileged to be allowed to visit so many worthy nonprofi t organi-
