INTERNATIONAL KEYNOTE PRESENTATION 8.40am - 9.40amThe Supply Chain as a Competitive Weapon

DR. STEVEN A. MELNYK, Professor of Operations & Supply Chain Management, Michigan State University (USA)

The role of the supply chain is to help the business realise the potential of Drucker’s three goals: keeping existing customers, attracting new customers, and selling more to both. Yet, most firms misuse the supply chain - to them, it is primarily a vehicle for driving down costs. Prof Melnyk argues that this focus is limited and often dangerous. In this opening presentation, he shares a number of key topics that are central to business realising the full potential of their supply chains.• Understanding the business model and linking the supply chain to it• Identifying the outcomes that drive the supply chain - six critical outcomes• Building the right supply chain capabilities for today’s environment• The “new” dimensions of capability - system interoperability and culture• Is your organization ready for today’s dynamic, complex environment? Master the rapid strategic response cycle: sense, assess,

formulate, deploy, re-calibrate, evaluate then repeat

STEVEN A. MELNYK is Professor of Operations and Supply Chain Management (Ph.D. – The Ivey School, University of Western Ontario, 1981) at Michigan State University. He has co-authored 16 books on operations and supply chain management. His research interests include supply chain and design, metrics/system measurement, responsiveness supply chains, supply chain design, and Environmentally Responsible Manufacturing (ERM). Dr. Steven A. Melnyk is an active researcher whose articles have appeared in over 80 international and national refereed journals. International keynote presentation - Supply Chain Strategies for AsiaMARK MILLAR, Managing Partner, M Power Associates – Gateway to Knowledge and Networks

DAY ONE

26 & 27 May 2015 | Melbourne Convention & Exhibition Centre

www.smartconference.com.au 7

With companies seeking alternative and additional sources of growth, revenue and profits - the spotlight is increasingly focused on the Asia region. In addition to outsourcing and offshoring procurement and production to lower cost economies, businesses are also seeking to tap into the rising consumerism across Asia. However, Asia may be one region but it is certainly not one market - it is a massive geography comprising many different markets with a wide variety of supply chain challenges and opportunities. This session will explore the need for agile supply chains amongst the complex dynamics and the changing landscape in the ‘Asia Era’ and discuss the associated distribution challenges and opportunities for shippers and service providers. The Speaker will explore China’s future role in global supply chains and discuss where-next for low cost manufacturing, including on-the-ground supply chain insights based on visits into some of the rapidly developing and emerging markets in Asia, including the logistics landscape across key ASEAN markets of Vietnam, Indonesia, Philippines and Myanmar.

MARK MILLAR leverages 25 years global business experience to provide value for clients with independent and informed perspectives on their supply chain strategies in Asia. Mark’s ‘Asia Supply Chain Insights’ series of corporate briefings, consultations and seminars help companies navigate the complex landscapes in China and ASEAN, improve the efficiency of their supply chain ecosystems and make better informed business decisions. Mark is a Visiting Lecturer at Hong Kong Polytechnic University and has delivered Guest Lectures at Georgia Tech (Atlanta and Hong Kong), RMIT (Ho Chi Minh City) and SP Jain (Dubai and Singapore) and HKU SPACE in Hong Kong.

From then until now the challenge to manage and mitigate risks through creating more resilient supply chains has remained constant. This case study looks at those supply chain challenges from a historical perspective and considers how the supply chain management has evolved over the years.

ROGER KNOWLES is the Supply Chain Manager for the Australian Antarctic Division. He has been with the Australian Antarctic Program for 12 years and has been to the Antarctic continent and the sub Antarctic on many occasions. 3 SUSTAINABILITY, SECURITY & RISK MANAGEMENT 4.10pm - 4.50pm

Is Worker Fatigue a Risk to your Business?

LEN PEARSON, General Manager & Executive Director, InterdynamicsGREG WEBSTER, Business Development Manager, Microster

Fatigue is a recurring theme in workplace accidents/incidents. The risks posed by fatigue in the workplace multiply when heavy equipment or handling of hazardous materials is involved without adequate rest between shifts. Every employer is legally responsible for ensuring workers are free of risk and safe whilst at work. Through effective Fatigue Risk Management, organisations are able to minimise the levels of risk and injury associated with worker fatigue, and in turn translate better fatigue management into improved performance and increased productivity. Discovering unique patterns in the workplace associated with fatigue and accidents/incidents enables managers to more effectively determine and manage the relationship between rosters, work cycles, overtime allocation and staff numbers. By building and transacting fatigue critiqued rosters you then can calculate hourly fatigue scores, allowing you to quantify, compare and predict fatigue related risks when planning future rostering strategies.

LEN PEARSON draws upon his 40+ years of business experience in banking, manufacturing and consulting to ensure successful delivery of client focused projects. During his 22 year career with InterDynamics Len has directed the implementation of FAID® software based FRMS solutions within numerous major companies in the rail, mining, energy, medical emergency, manufacturing, aviation, marine, and road transport modalities in Australia, New Zealand, USA, Canada, Europe and the UK.

Research Session - Making Women Visible: The Unseen Gender in Supply Chain & LogisticsPETA IRVING, Lecturer, Victoria University, Executive Committee Member, Women In Supply Chain

Peta Irving will share insights from the latest research into the need for attracting greater participation from women in the industry. It goes beyond training and education to outline as many options as possible for attracting and retaining talented women in transport and logistics, as well as identifying impediments to entering the industry. Because of the tight recruitment market, growing skills shortages, approaching exit of baby boomers from the workforce, male-dominated image and the overall culture and attitudes within the established workforce it is difficult to attract more women and retain those women already working in the industry. The action plan recognises it is important to communicate the professional nature of the industry and the wider opportunities and benefits available to women in the transport and logistics industry.

PETA IRVING has almost 30 years in the Australian Defence Force and has gained a wealth of experience whilst working across multiple areas of supply chain. Peta specialises in developing cost efficiencies through defining requirements for successful projects. INTERNATIONAL KEYNOTE PRESENTATION 5.00pm - 5.45pmThe Future Of E-Commerce: The Latest Trends And Their Impact On Web And Omni-Channel Retailing

KIM BAUDRY, Market Development Director, Dematic (USA)

The emergence of online buying has forever changed the North American shopping experience. Construction of glittering shopping malls is dwindling; “super-sized” stores are shrinking; traditional bricks and mortar stores are trying to stay relevant as web-only retailers continue to grow. Adding to the mix is the entrance of enormous global internet retailers. Online sales are expected to top US$320 billion in the US alone in 2015 and continue to grow between 10-15% per year. What does all of this mean to the future of commerce and the supply chain? The North American consumer has changed their expectations – they want to buy anything, anywhere and they want it now! Meeting these expectations while trying to predict the future is no easy task. If companies do not adopt nimble management of their products, service levels, marketing, pricing and supply chain, they are likely to become obsolete. In this session, Kim will share information on the transformation of the e-commerce and retail market places and will provide insight into topics such as:• What are the latest trends in e-commerce and retail shopping? • Omnichannel: what does it really mean and how are leading companies changing their game?• How will companies meet the expectations of the ever-evolving consumer?• How is the supply chain transforming and why is it critical to the success of companies?

KIM BAUDRY is responsible for supporting the company’s efforts in sales, solution design, and R & D for the e-commerce, retail, apparel and healthcare markets. She has over 15 years of experience in the field of supply chain and materials handling technology. Kim has presented on numerous topics for the Retail Industry Leaders Association, as well as presenting at the National Retail Federation’s Supply Chain Summit.

Research & Case Study - Factors Determining High Reliability in a Product Service Oriented Supply Chain

MARCUS ZEUSCHNER, Operations Services Manager, BAE Systems PROFESSOR JOHN MO, Head of Manufacturing and Materials Discipline, RMIT

The Product Service System (PSS) concept is a new business model that aims to integrate a service dominant supply chain for all phases of the life cycle of a complex engineering product from acquisition to sustainment. Researches in High Reliability Organisations (HROs) have shown that service transformations seem to have the required characteristics to overcome most of these issues. This paper explores correlations between HRO causal factors and PSS requisite capabilities, and synthesises the resultant characterisations along with service business model capabilities in terms of HRO principles supporting mindful transformations in support service operations. A research study has been carried out to investigate factors affecting the effectiveness of PSS, in particular, whether an HRO will be able to facilitate a focus. This paper outlines the investigation activities and summaries the findings in this study.

MARCUS ZEUSCHNER is an Operations Management professional proficient in capability management and Product Service Systems.

The Site Visit program for SMART 2015 will hold 3 site visit tours which will visit advanced operations in the Melbourne area and take place on the Monday prior to the conference. As the site visits program is only open to conference delegates and restricted in numbers, we strongly recommend you complete your full registration early to avoid disappointment.

Coaches depart from the main entrance of the Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre, at the time specified for each individual tour. If there are any changes in sites and/or timings, delegates will be given ample notice of these changes prior to the commencement of the tour.

Please note: The sequence of visits within the tours may be varied without notice to suit host sites requirements. Delegates must wear appropriate shoes (no high heels or open toed shoes). If required, safety jackets will be provided. Most sites prohibit the use of cameras. Site Visit hosts are provided with a list of attendees and have the right to prohibit the attendance of any person to their premises.

Our thanks go to all participating companies for making their operations available for the site visit program, providing delegates with a unique opportunity to learn from industry leaders in a real setting.Check www.smartconference.com.au for latest information
