Wholesalers and retailers are being challenged by a lack of a reliable, available workforce, increasing wage costs and business uncertainty. Traditionally, the ROI on Goods-to-Person was not compelling for small and medium-sized operations. Dematic’s new, Modular GTP system — a flexible, off-the-shelf picking solution that can be scaled up or down as your business changes. Modular GTP achieves high productivity and pick accuracy and is ultra space efficient. And as your business grows, Modular GTP can be expanded to meet your future needs. Welcome to SMART Conference & Expo 2015This year’s SMART conference is the 12th biennial Conference and is the twenty first anniversary of our first conference. After 22 years, SMART remains Australia’s leading Supply Chain Management event.Since our first conference in the early 1990’s Supply Chain has changed significantly and at SMART we have endeavoured to keep up with those changes and most importantly assist our delegates and members of the supply chain community to understand and implement those changes into their own organisations supply chain. Our primary goal has been to provide our hundreds of delegates with access to leading speakers from

around the world, the latest in supply chain information and research, and fantastic opportunities for delegates to network with those working in supply chain and logistics. This year’s conference theme is focusing on competencies for competitive advantage. Today’s Supply Chain Managers face a difficult challenge. In addition to demonstrating competency and excellence in the traditional functional roles from which the discipline has and is evolving – like the management of supply, inventory, production, procurement, transport and warehousing – they are now expected to take a more strategic approach, and transform supply chain management from a mere ‘cost of doing business’ item, to a strategic business enabler that drives profitability, improves customer service levels and generates real competitive advantage.By choosing to attend SMART 2015 we will be helping you identify the future of supply chain and logistics, exploring the competencies that need to be mastered, in order to wield the supply chain as a competitive weapon! The program has been designed to provide insights into the forces that are empowering top performing supply chains, managers and teams now – and in years ahead. Please feel free to take a look through this book for a thorough run-down of what you can expect to see at this year’s event.I encourage you to attend as much as possible of the Smart 2015 conference program, and take the opportunity to maximise the benefits of the conference. We hope you will take the opportunity to meet and network with fellow delegates at our Smart Welcome Cocktail Reception and that you will join us for the Supply Chain Industry dinner, featuring the Smart awards 2015 winner announcements Finally I’d like to extend my thanks to our generous sponsors, who have committed themselves to supporting such a vital industry event. My thanks, also, to the associations that have worked hard to create and present Smart 2015 to you, to our stream chairs, and to our creative and dedicated organising committee.I look forward to meeting you over the next few days and I welcome you to Melbourne and to Smart Conference & Expo 2015.

Research Session - Making Women Visible: The Unseen Gender in Supply Chain & LogisticsPETA IRVING, Lecturer, Victoria University, Executive Committee Member, Women In Supply Chain

Peta Irving will share insights from the latest research into the need for attracting greater participation from women in the industry. It goes beyond training and education to outline as many options as possible for attracting and retaining talented women in transport and logistics, as well as identifying impediments to entering the industry. Because of the tight recruitment market, growing skills shortages, approaching exit of baby boomers from the workforce, male-dominated image and the overall culture and attitudes within the established workforce it is difficult to attract more women and retain those women already working in the industry. The action plan recognises it is important to communicate the professional nature of the industry and the wider opportunities and benefits available to women in the transport and logistics industry.

PETA IRVING has almost 30 years in the Australian Defence Force and has gained a wealth of experience whilst working across multiple areas of supply chain. Peta specialises in developing cost efficiencies through defining requirements for successful projects. Currently Peta uses her experience and expertise in supply chain processes and project management in her consulting and learning practice. Research & Case Study - Factors Determining High Reliability in a Product Service Oriented Supply Chain

MARCUS ZEUSCHNER, Operations Services Manager, BAE Systems PROFESSOR JOHN MO, Head of Manufacturing and Materials Discipline, RMIT

The Product Service System (PSS) concept is a new business model that aims to integrate a service dominant supply chain for all phases of the life cycle of a complex engineering product from acquisition to sustainment. Researches in High Reliability Organisations (HROs) have shown that service transformations seem to have the required characteristics to overcome most of these issues. This paper explores correlations between HRO causal factors and PSS requisite capabilities, and synthesises the resultant characterisations along with service business model capabilities in terms of HRO principles supporting mindful transformations in support service operations. A research study has been carried out to investigate factors affecting the effectiveness of PSS, in particular, whether an HRO will be able to facilitate a focus. This paper outlines the investigation activities and summaries the findings in this study.

MARCUS ZEUSCHNER is an Operations Management professional proficient in capability management and Product Service Systems. His experience spans across Manufacturing, Aerospace, Defence and Maritime sectors both in Australia and Overseas. Motivated by the pursuit of excellence and tempered by a belief that success is perishable, he strives to create enduring relationships based on trust, co-created value and high reliability outcomes.

PROFESSOR JOHN MO was appointed Discipline Head, Manufacturing and Materials Engineering in the School of Aerospace, Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering in November, 2006. He has been an active researcher in manufacturing systems, enterprise modelling and industrial automation for over 30 years in universities and CSIRO.

Case Study - Open Food Network (OFN) System: Connecting And Supporting the Sustainability of Regional Food Supply Chain Communities

DR. SHERAH KURNIA, (Hons), GCUT, PhD, Senior Lecturer, Department of Computing and Information Systems, University of Melbourne

The Open Food Network (OFN) is a prototype of a networked e-commerce system for activating online regional food marketplaces. OFN will enable farmers, eaters and independent food enterprises, to connect, trade, manage Food Hubs and coordinate logistics. It aims to reduce transaction costs of networking food for Small-and-Medium Enterprises and improve both farmers’ access to local and regional markets and consumers’ access to fresh local produce. The broad aim of the study is to evaluate the effectiveness of the Open Food Network (OFN) system in connecting and supporting the sustainability of regional food supply chain communities. As part of this study, we have investigated the existing Food Hubs in Australia and conducted a series of interviews with a number of Food Hub organisations to identify their roles, benefits to community, as well as enablers and barriers to their sustainability. We then specifically evaluate the effectiveness of the OFN through an in-depth case study involving a number of key stakeholders who are involved in the development and early adopters of the OFN. This project will contribute to the on-going development of the system and is part of a larger research program exploring how ICT/broadband can support sustainability and resilience in food supply chains.

SHERAH KURNIA, research areas are adoption and use of technologies including electronic commerce, mobile commerce and, social technologies, supply chain management, sustainability, strategic IT decision making and enterprise architecture.

Together with the trend towards mass customisation the impact to the supply chain industry will be transformative. In this presentation Joe Carmody provides an insider’s glimpse of the state of the industry, shares insight into how businesses can leverage 3D printing today and also position for the inevitable convergence of manufacturing and supply chain functions.

Case Study - Chain of Responsibility & Supply Risk Management

MIKE WOOD, Managing Director, LATUS

Chain of Responsibility will not go away in Australia, in fact its impact is increasing, all Australian states now have Chain of Responsibility and New Zealand is not far behind. Surprisingly SE Asian are now starting to introduce similar safety and responsibility rules similar to Australia. However, most areas of business in Australia see CoR as a cost, this is mainly because it is implemented as another layer and not as a method of business improvement. Mike will discuss how to introduce CoR as a business improvement strategy and will share examples of where businesses have done so and saved themselves many thousands of dollars.

MIKE WOOD has a wide range of experience and expertise in most areas of logistics and supply chain management, with an emphasis on the strategic and hands-on design of logistics systems. Mike has been instrumental in developing Codes of Practice for Chain of Responsibility. Mike’s background in government and logistics stands him in good stead to understand and advise on the most practical and realistic way for a company to be compliant to CoR. LATUS was recently retained by the WA government to assist in the rollout of CoR/C&E.

Supply chains have become a more and more critical dimension in global trade. Over the last years, it has emerged as a very strategic element in business and now forms an integrated part of corporate strategy. As such, the SMART conference provides an excellent opportunity to become familiar with the latest challenges, developments and innovations in this domain.

In the Australian context, with significantly extended shipping routes to international trade, the challenges companies are facing, are unique. The SMART conference is a cornerstone event on the Australian supply chain calendar; not to be missed.

apicsAU is working towards the creation of a broad based Professional Supply Chain Community, to provide a full range of professional development services to supply chain practitioners and businesses across Australia. Within this community, apicsAU is pleased to be a major partner in the SMART conference and we encourage and welcome your attendance at this premier supply chain event.

The apicsAU Community now also incorporates the Logistics Associations of Australia (LAA) and the Alliance for Supply Chain Innovation (ASCI) and will in future expand with more specialist groups.

We are looking forward to seeing you at SMART and trust that you will benefit significantly from your participation in the apicsAU Professional Supply Chain Community!
