About Mycological Society of India: MSC is a scientific body constituted for the advancement in the subject of mycology, the study of fungi including mushrooms, molds, truffles, yeasts, lichens plant pathogens and medicinally important fungi. The society was founded in January 1973 by team of mycologist led by Professor C. V. Subramanian, Former Director, CAS in botany, University of Madras, India with a view to bring together mycologist of the country and with the broad objectives of promoting development of mycology in botany in all the prospects and in all the widest prospective. For more details about the membership form etc. please visit website:

Mycological Society of India(Mumbai unit): The Mumbai unit a branch of mycological Society of India was started in 2003 with the intention of setting up a platform in Mumbai for young mycology researchers where they can present their work and interact with eminent scientist each year. National seminars on various mycological themes are conducted in collaboration with different colleges and institutes in Mumbai.

ABOUT THE THEME OF THE CONFERENCEFungi are fundamental and predominant influences in our lives. Some of the most important organisms used in biotechnology are fungi. Fungi have been important in both ancient and modern biotechnological processes. Processes and products that utilize fungi include baking, brewing, and the production of antibiotics, alcohols, enzymes, organic acids, and numerous pharmaceuticals. Many important industrial products (chemicals, pharmaceuticals etc.) are now produced from fungi using many industrial processes, such as the production of enzymes, vitamins, polysaccharides, polyhydric alcohols, pigments, lipids, and glycolipids. Fungi produce secondary metabolites which are important to our health and nutrition and have tremendous economic impact in our day today life. In addition to the multiple reaction sequences of fermentations, fungi are extremely useful in carrying out biotransformation processes. In many respects, however, fungi have important and positive values in nature and for man: they are part of the microbiota in soil causing mineralization by degradation of organic material and as mycorrhiza they are important symbionts for many higher plants, especially trees. Coming to the topic of this review, they are used in the production of food and fodder; since ancient times they are used in medicine and more recently they have became important tools in science and research and are used increasingly to fight the problems of our modern society in the biological control of pathogens and in pollution control. In the area of environmental applications, harnessing of fungi in bioremediation of industrial effluents contaminated with heavy metals and other toxic substances is a major new development. The future of fungal biotechnology and fungal nanotechnology is encouraging. As more functions are revealed by functional genomics and bioinformatics, new targets are become available for screening fungal products.

OBJECTIVES OF CONFERENCE:National Conference on Current Trends and Future Prospects in Fungal Biotechnology will be a unique event, proposing to bring together participants from various disciplines to discuss and share the role of fungi in fungal biotechnology. This conference will have a number of sessions that encompasses beneficial role of fungal organisms in various fields like agriculture, environment, medicine, industries, oil refineries, beverages and aims to provide a common platform for all scientists, students and teachers to network and share their experiences, exchange ideas and knowledge in this field.

This conference will provide a platform for researchers, students, academia and industries to promote collaborative approach for development of new and innovative approaches in fungal biotechnology and its applications in agriculture, food, medicines, biotechnology and environmental sciences.

About The Institute of Science, Mumbai

The Institute of Science, Mumbai, formerly known as the Royal Institute of Science (RIS) was established in 1920 by the Royal Charter. The Institute is located in the Central Business District of Mumbai opposite Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Museum. The building is a heritage site. Since the Institute is located at a walkable distance from Churchgate Station and Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus (CST) it can be reached easily from any part of Mumbai.

The Institute is managed by the Government of Maharashtra and is affiliated to University of Mumbai. It is a full- fledged premier post-graduate centre for teaching and research in science. From its inception in 1920 till date, the Institute has earned a very high reputation in scientific research and teaching. The Institute undertakes interdisciplinary and multi-institutional research projects sponsored by different funding agencies and industries in various areas. As an academic institution, the Institute has not only succeeded in setting and maintaining high standards of research and teaching, but has also provided an atmosphere congenial for the pursuit of Science. Education is a learning process and research is a process of expansion of ideas, which exist. This is supported in tenets of the motto of the Institute, “It's good to seek out the causes of things”, which has been followed over the years at the Institute. The Institute has been identified as a Center with Potential for Excellence by UGC. Institute was reaccredited 'A' Grade by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) in 2014. Institute received “Dainik Bhaskar National Education leadership Award” in recognition of leadership in higher education. The Dainik Bhaskar National Education Award recognizes institutions that are innovative, modern and industry related in their curriculum.

HRD ministry, Govt. of India has shortlisted this institute as lead institution for cluster university under Under Rashtriya Ucchatar Shiksha Abhiyan (RUSA), Government of India, a proposal for a cluster university in Mumbai has been sanctioned.
