“I didn’t expect these sunglasses to be my favorite pair but they are! I am a lover of designer sunglasses and never expected that I’d replace my broken Prada rounded, cat-eye jeweled sunglasses with a different pair but I did! with this Tortoise Butterfly style and I LOVE THEM. I was sold spot on when I tried on a friend’s pari. I purchased mine a few weeks ago and have to say, these fit my standards. The lenses are gorgeous and the actual frames look and feel luxurious -- they are light and feel weightless on my face. Also, I noticed that the tints enhance my vision too (I’ve very bad astigmatism, wear contacts and was told that I couldn’t wear just any tints because the cheap lenses can partially block your vision - go figure.) Like many people I spent a lot of time outside while growing up. From the six years I was a lifeguard to the countless weekends I spent traveling to ultimate frisbee tournaments around the country I learned the importance of durable, crystal clear sunglasses.

My passion for eyewear only grew when I Iearned from my co-founder Jonathan that 39 million people in the world suffer from preventable blindness. Most of these people live in developing countries where access to health care is restricted to only the very rich. The poor in these countries live primarily an agrarian life, exposed to high levels of ultraviolet light, one of the main causes of cataracts.

I thought about how for me, a computer science major who landed a consulting job after graduating, getting outside was a form of leisure. Yet for the majority of people around the world being outside is a necessity. How much would such a person’s livelihood be debilitated if she became afflicted with a vision-distorting disease? We discovered that non-profit organizations like Surgical Eye Expeditions (SEE) International were tackling the problem through transformative, low-cost cataract surgeries performed by volunteer ophthalmologists.

In response we founded Waveborn — a for-purpose company putting giving at the core of business. Waveborn is bigger than sunglasses, it’s a mission. We’re nurturing a community of change-makers and entrepreneurs who know how to create impact. You’ll find our shades on determined faces, above eager smiles and in front of visionary eyes. Waveborn’s long-term mission is to end preventable blindness. We aim to cut blindness caused by cataracts in half by the year 2050. Waveborn sells superior quality sunglasses and donates 10% of profits to fund life changing cataract surgeries through our charity partner, Surgical Eye Expeditions (SEE) International. With their help and yours, Waveborn has funded over 1,000 cataract surgeries to date. Our actions are motivated by a desire to improve sight, prevent blindness, and create measurable impact in communities around the world.
