What is REASEARCH ?

The systematic investigation into and study of materials and sources in order to establish facts and reach new conclusions.

What is FORMULATION?

Its fundamental meaning is the putting together of components in appropriate relationships or structures, according to a formula

Researches for Problem Formulation

Problem formulation process mainly consists of studying situation environment, action and choice of most approptiate course of action. These studies can be conducted by three types of researches namely Preliminary ,Exploratory and Conclusion research

Page 5: Reasearch Formulation

1.Preliminary Reasearch

Preliminary reasearch is necessary to understand the problem’s environment.it involves

• Discovering and crystallizing the problem.

• Describing the relevant situation or environment

2.Exploratory Reasearch

The exploratory research is done to get the answer to the question,’What alternative courses of action might solve the problem and thereby reach the final objective’.For this the information enearthed from past records and research experience is reported. This will help in selecting the final course of action and a decision to go for conclusive research.

3.Conclusive Research

This enables the decision-maker to select the most appropriate course of action. This needs more care and efforts. It validates or verifies the expected outcome of each hypothesis. Here greatest volume and intensity of data are likely to be gathered.Sometime uncertain may force the decision-maker to use his intuition and judgment but in general, major decisions are always based on conclusive research.

Techniques Involved in Defining a Problem

1) Statement of a problem in a General Way

2) Understanding The Nature of the Problem

3) Surveying the Aavailable Literature4) Developing The ideas through

Discussions5) Rephrasing the Research Problem

Advantages of Problem Formulation

1) It orients i.e. brings into clear understading of the relations and determines the postion of decision-maker

2) Identifies the data relevant to the problem.3) Enables the decision model to be well

conceived.4) Pinpoint the gaps in the knowledge that

may call for formal research.5) Suggests the source of data and facilitates

their interpretation
