    DESIGNING CLASS IV RPDs

What is the first question you should ask yourself?

Why cant I use traditional fixed or implants?????Even in other classifications it is often ideal to fill modification spaces

    fixed or implants.

What are the contraindications to fixed vs. removable?

    1. LONG SPAN along with abutment status. Whats Antes Law?2. ARCH FORMWhish is unfavorable?3. TISSUE LOSSNOT ALWAYS TALKING JUST TEETH.4. ECONOMICScan result in not using ones first choice.

Compare a posterior extension with an anterior extension.

    1. Is there movement around a fulcrum line?2. Anterior rest support available?3. Anterior retainer placement?4. Posterior retainer placement?5. Alveolar bone loss and impact on esthetics?

    1. Adjacent to edentulous areas. On the lower arch where we have a bicuspid do you rest #28 on the mesial (as a tooth bounded space) or distal (as adjacent

to an extension)in this case anterior extension???2/3. Distribute the stress and support major connector if needed.

    Where are guide planes located?

    Where are guide planes located?

In either arch not very effective given the teeth one has for G.P.sRemember the rule for placing guide planes on mesial of cuspid to mesial of cuspid?

What major connector should I use?

First ask your self why cant I use a ?for each arch.

LIGUAL BAR ON MANDIBLEA-P BAR ON MAXILLAE

On the mandible would have to be a lingual bar as nothing to plate with theedentulous area. On the maxillae consider a U-shaped as the palate would be open even more

than if you used an A-P bar but an A-P bar is still acceptable.

    DENTURE BASE RETENTION

What are your needs????-space-alveolar bone replacement-esthetics

    Direct Retainers

    1. Anything goes but if you use any W.W. remember it must come out of anedentulous area which means it will impact esthetics big time. 2. Tend toward cast clasps as they are neater but again watch out of coming out of an edentulous area.

    3. In posterior youll probably use an embrasure clasp of some sort.

    RECIPROCATION

Whatever fits the bill! But in most cases will probablybe using plating on maxillae and recip arms on the mandible.

    INDIRECT RETENTION

    Needed in Class IV?

If needed taken care of anyway with your posterior rests

    MINOR CONNECTOR

Make sure everything is connected to the major connector.
