DESCRIPTION: THIS VIDEO LETS THE AUDIENCE EAVESDROP ON A PRETTY TENSE CONVERSATION BETWEEN TWO FRIENDS. ONE FRIEND IS A CHRIST-FOLLOWER, THE OTHER IS SKEPTICAL. WHAT HAPPENS WHEN THEIR WORLDVIEWS COLLIDE? PART OF THE REAL CONVERSATIONS SERIES, THIS VIDEO HELPS YOU TEACH YOUR STUDENTS THE IMPORTANCE OF FAITH AND KNOWING WHAT THEY BELIEVE. Show the Video Discuss Is this a kind of conversation you can relate to? How do you see this topic of conversation—whether to believe or not believe in God—play out in your world? How is it that Christianity can be both simple, and complicated at the same time? What is simple about the Gospel message? In your mind, where do things get complicated? Is there a difference in faith and blind faith? How is belief in God and His Word different than blind belief? Why is it so important to be able to explain your beliefs? Why is a basic understanding of your faith so necessary? Close with the Word Have students turn to 1 Peter 3. Explain that Peter was writing a letter to Christians just beginning to feel the pain of persecution in the Roman Empire. Read or have a student read 1 Peter 3:15-17. Then, ask: o What does verse 15 have to do with what we watched in the video? Answer: When we engage in conversations with those who might not share our beliefs, we are called to be able to “have an answer” for those who question our faith. We should know what we believe. o Verse 15 and 16 speak to the way we are to engage in conversation. What guidelines do they give? Answer: Be gentle and respectful. Be honest so that we have a “clear conscience.” o In your own words, what does it look like to interact in these sorts of conversations with “gentleness and respect”? o Verse 16 gives the reason to act this way. What is the motivation for being kind and respectful even as we stand up for our faith? Answer: So that others will have no reason to speak badly of us. If they do, they will be the ones in the wrong, not us. Remind students of the video’s message. Remind them that we are called to openly speak about our faith. If we are faithful in representing God and the message of Christ, God will take care of the rest. ©2010 youthministry360 / www.youthministry360.com Real Conversations Series: ONE AND ONLY
