January is VOCATIONAL SERVICE
Month in Rotary
On the morning of December 22, 2015, Inter-actors of Holy Spirit National High Schoolconducted the club’s own project, "Gifts ofHope," as a Christmas special for street chil-dren who were not beneficial participants in
the on-going Care-Seekers Program of RCHoly Spirit and its service partners.
To locate the itinerant children, our team ofeight (8) Interactors went around the differentpedestrian overpasses crossing the wideCommonwealth Avenue and nearby public
parks in Barangay Holy Spirit. The Interacthen gave the street children simple Chmas gift packs containing educational tcoloring books and food items. A total olucky street children were benefited in
Interact project. Upon talking to them, Interactors learned that some of the childhad already stopped studying and whomeless, sick and begging for alms.
We may not have been able to give texpensive gifts and money, but we were
very happy to see them opening gifts with wide smiles. It's true thatreal spirit of Christmas is about giand sharing. We are so thankful to that we are able to accomplish this ject.
The gifts shared with the street childhad been provided by members ofInteract Club of Holy Spirit National HSchool and by generous donors friends. We thank all of them whheartedly for joining the InteractorHoly Spirit serve as “gifts to the world

There is a story told in my Hindu tradition oftwo sages, Shaunaka and Abhipratari. They were worshippers of Prana, the windgod. One day, the two men were about tosit down to lunch when a poor studentknocked on their door, asking for food.
"No, boy, do not bother us at this hour,"was the reply. The student was surprisedbut very hungry, so he persisted.
ell me, honored sirs, which deity do you worship?"
rana, the wind god," they answered impatiently.
o you not know that the world begins and ends with wind, andat wind pervades the entire universe?"
e two sages were by now very irritated by their impertinent
est. "Of course we know it!" they replied.
Well, then," continued the student, "if Prana pervades the uni-rse, then he pervades me also, since I am but part of the uni-rse. He is also in this hungry body, which stands before yougging for a bite to eat! And so in denying food to me, you denyo the very deity whom you say you serve."
e sages realized the student spoke the truth and invited him toter and share their meal. For they understood, at that moment,
at by opening the door to one who sought their help, they weret only serving that individual – but reaching toward a largeral.
ur experience of Rotary is, for the most part, based in our ownmmunities. We meet every week in our clubs, in the same
aces, with the same familiar friends. While almost all of us arevolved in some way or other in international service, the Rotarye see and share from day to day feels very local. It can be easylose sight of the larger picture – of what our service truly
eans.
very impact you have as a Rotarian, individually and throughur club, is multiplied by the power of our numbers. When youed one person who is hungry, when you educate one personho is illiterate, when you protect one child from disease, the
pact may seem small. It is anything but. For it is only throughe power of numbers, through the power of our individual ac-ns and gifts, that we can have the impact we seek: to truly BeGift to the World .

Foundation Chairman’s January 2016 Messa
"Cowboy Logic," as sung by Michael MMurphey, has been one of my favoritesongs for many years because of its hamusic and thoughtful lyrics. It has rele-vance to Rotary because of its emphas
on honesty and hard work, but I did nofully appreciate its application to our organization until I read Cowboy Ethics bJim Owen.
Jim was aware that the unwritten Codethe West was a powerful and positive force shaping the ethbehavior of cowboys in the Western states of the USA, anddistilled the code into 10 guiding principles. They are succinand aptly stated, and they align closely with The Four-WayTest, one of the hallmarks of Rotary.
Three of the principles are particularly applicable to the Pol
Plus program. In the 30 years since the program was launcRotarians have remained steadfastly committed to the goalpolio eradication, even though it has taken much longer andbeen more expensive than anyone originally imagined. But stuck with it, and now the goal of ending polio is clearly in s
Along the way, we have fulfilled three of the principles of theCode of the West: "Do what has to be done," "When you maa promise, keep it," and "Always finish what you start"!
Two other principles have special relevance for The RotaryFoundation as a whole: "Take pride in your work" and "Ridethe brand." Through their support of Foundation programs, the first ambassadorial scholarships in 1948 to newer initiat
such as the Rotary Peace Centers and the Future Vision plRotarians have truly made the world a better place. And be-cause Rotarians have "ridden for the brand" through their ctive work and generous contributions, these programs havebeen highly successful, enhancing members' ability to takepride in their work. Therefore, I do not need to ask Rotariantheir loyalty to the Foundation. Instead, I want to thank themtheir amazing loyalty!

By Fernanda Luz Moraes, president of theRotaract Club of Cachoeirinha, Rio Grandedo Sul, Brazil
When I began participating in Ro-taract in 2012, I viewed it as away to spend my weekends doingsomething good in my community. But then I realized it is so muchmore than that.
I have met many other membersof Rotaract who have a hard timeexplaining the passion that comesover them for doing volunteerwork. The best way I can put it isthis: We think globally, then actlocally.
I want to change the world, and inorder to make it happen, I know Ineed to develop my leadership skillsand abilities. I need to connect to people from allover, from every culture and many different occu-pations, to gain new ideas and fresh perspectives. Ialso need to act in a way that inspires leadership inothers. We take action and encourage other peopleto act to make things happen.
I have been cultivating love, enthusiasm, andhappiness most of my life. Why shouldn’t I makethese things part of my Rotaract experience aswell? We have a lot of work to do and many people
to develop. We also have mucwe can learn from them andalongside them.
To me, those are the three se-
crets of Rotaract: love, enthuasm, and happiness. Love, bcause love guides the world.Enthusiasm, because enthusi-asm transforms problems intosolutions and positive attitudesinto tangible results. Happinesbecause happiness blinds us tsadness and discouragement, and motivates us to keep making the world better.
Over the years, I have learnedthat Rotaract embodies all ofthese things. This is the way w
can change our lives and changthe world.===================================RELATED

The Object of RotaryFirst formulated in 1910, the Object of Rotary is to encour-age and foster the ideal of service as a basis of worthy
enterprise and, in particular, to encourage and foster:
FIRST. The development of acquaintance as an opportunityfor service;
SECOND. High ethical standards in business and profes-sions, the recognition of the worthiness of all useful occupa-tions, and the dignifying of each Rotarian's occupation as anopportunity to serve society;
THIRD. The application of the ideal of service in each Rotar-ian's personal, business, and community life;
FOURTH. The advancement of international understanding,
goodwill, and peace through a world fellowship of business
and professional persons united in the ideal of service.
5 Avenues of ServiceBased on Object of Rotary, the Five Avenues of Service areRotary’s philosophical cornerstone and the foundation onwhich club activity is based:
Club Service focuses on strengthening fellowship and en-suring the effective functioning of the club.
Vocational Service encourages Rotarians to serve othersthrough their vocations and to practice high ethical stan-dards.
Community Service covers the projects and activities theclub undertakes to improve life in its community.
International Service encompasses actions taken to ex-pand Rotary’s humanitarian reach around the globe and topromote world understanding & peace.
Youth Service recognizes the positive change implemented
by youth and young adults through leadership development
activities, service projects, and exchange programs.
