     By Kathleen Plaza, Rotary Scholar

I was born and raised in a rural barrio (neighborhood)

in Mindanao, Philippines. I moved to Guam when I

was about 18 years old. I became a member of

the Rotaract Club of the Marianas in Guam when I

was completing my undergrad degree in biology, and

served as secretary in 2011-12 and as youth services

    director in 2012-13.

I moved to Hawaii in August 2015, and with a RotaryScholarship funded by a global grant, began taking

classes in public health, focused on disease prevention

and treatment. I will finish my program in May 2017.

I have always been interested in ending polio and

finding ways to help our club make a difference. Ro-

tary’s This Close campaign is inspiring and resonates

with my dream of developing and promoting pro-

grams that address health care needs and decrease th

    occurrence of communicable and vaccine-preventabl

diseases in medically underserved communities likethe barrio where I grew up. As a humble immigrant

from a developing country, I want, in my own way,

to Be a Gift to the World .

The global grant scholarship is helping me achieve

that goal. I have tremendous support coming from Ro

tary District 2750, and I also have a supportive host

club, the Rotary Club of Honolulu. I’m very proud

and honored that the club asked me to serve as a judg

for the Hawaii Rotary Youth Foundation Committee

which grants $5,000 scholarships to graduating sen-

iors at Hawaii high schools who wish to go to college

My role on the area selection committee will be to

     judge applicants from my area.

I would encourage other Rotary alumni to continue to

find ways to stay involved with Rotary, even after yo

finish your program or studies. We all can make a di

    ference.

Changing Detroit one entrepreneur at a time !Rotary International

The tagline above was one of the early lines we in RotaryDistrict 6400 used during our LaunchDetroit openhouse events when we were telling our story to prospec-tive applicants. Later, I remember thinking about thatline and wondering if it was too much of a cliché.

Fast forward to today and I have become a true believer. This program, which we started in 2013 to provide mi-croloans, training, and mentoring to those trying to startlocal businesses, has had that transformational effect onseveral budding entrepreneurs in Detroit.

I think of Willie Brake and his small computer business. He started in year one of our program and, after twoyears, opened his own retail store offering computersand computer services to customers in his neighbor-hood. The neighborhood had been without any localcomputer stores, since most had either moved to thesuburbs or been replaced by big-box stores that sold

    computers.

I’ve enjoyed visiting with Willie and hearing the goodthings he’s accomplished so far, such as hiring younglocal techies to work in his store while he moves out intothe community to promote his business. Willie com-pleted one loan cycle and returned for a second round offunding earlier this year. Remember: . . . ”one entrepre-neur at a time.”

LaunchDetroit serves an important role in this city. It brings valuable resources to entrepreneurs who are deperately seeking guidance. And to think that Rotarymembers are jumping in to make a difference. Wow!

So, it may be a cliché, but in this instance, it’s very tru We are changing Detroit, one entrepreneur at a time!

Visit the LaunchDetroit website Read The Rotarian article about LaunchDetroit

     View   videos about the program

     By Lawrence Wright29 October 2015

     Photos by Alyce Henson/Rotary International

About the author: Lawrence Wright is a past gover-nor of District 6400 and a member of the Rotary Club

Taylor, Michigan. He is president of LaunchDetroit.Another entrepreneur, Thanesia “Tee” Howard, usedher loan for her home-based juice business.

ROTARY CLUBS have played a large role in promoting mifinance programs in the United States. Based on the premthat small-scale private loans paired with education and sport services can have an outsize impact on troubled commnities, the concept has flourished in developing countries agained popularity stateside in the wake of the Great Recsion. And it’s a natural fit for Rotarians, who represent a cr-section of business and community leaders with a wealthexperience and connections.

In 2012, Marilyn Fitzgerald, a member of the Rotary ClubTraverse City, brought the idea for a microloan project in troit to leaders of District 6400, which encompasses DetWindsor, Ont.; and the suburbs along both sides of the DeRiver. She’d implemented similar projects in the developworld and had adapted that model to help rural farmersnorthern Michigan.

Fitzgerald helped Lawrence Wright of D6400 and his te

configure a multipronged approach. In addition to loans$1,000 to $2,500, to be repaid with 5 percent interest o

one year, the program would provide education, one-on-

mentorship, and networking opportunities. “Networking as

know it in Rotary is so valuable,” Wright says. “We can brin

lot of those resources from our own networks to our entrep

neurs. That’s vocational service at its core.”

THE FIRST STEP was fundraising. A dozen clubs in the dtrict contributed, and Baker College of Allen Park, whpresident is a Rotarian, gave $30,000. These donatihelped pay instructors for business classes, which participawere required to complete before receiving their loans. T

group gathered at the Baker College campus for a seriesfive sessions in the fall of 2013. Each one focused on a difent aspect of business management, such as accounting alegal issues, and the series culminated in a business-pworkshop. Prospective mentors came to the classes to serve and mingle, and after a few sessions they were bondwith the borrowers.

The Object of RotaryFirst formulated in 1910, the Object of Rotary is to encour-age and foster the ideal of service as a basis of worthy

enterprise and, in particular, to encourage and foster:

    FIRST. The development of acquaintance as an opportunityfor service;

    SECOND. High ethical standards in business and profes-sions, the recognition of the worthiness of all useful occupa-tions, and the dignifying of each Rotarian's occupation as anopportunity to serve society;

    THIRD. The application of the ideal of service in each Rotar-ian's personal, business, and community life;

FOURTH. The advancement of international understanding,

goodwill, and peace through a world fellowship of business

and professional persons united in the ideal of service.

5 Avenues of ServiceBased on Object of Rotary, the Five Avenues of Service areRotary’s philosophical cornerstone and the foundation onwhich club activity is based:

Club Service focuses on strengthening fellowship and en-suring the effective functioning of the club.

Vocational Service encourages Rotarians to serve othersthrough their vocations and to practice high ethical stan-dards.

Community Service covers the projects and activities theclub undertakes to improve life in its community.

International Service encompasses actions taken to ex-pand Rotary’s humanitarian reach around the globe and topromote world understanding & peace.

Youth Service recognizes the positive change implemented

by youth and young adults through leadership development

activities, service projects, and exchange programs.

The Four-Way TestOf the things we think, say or do

    Is it the TRUTH

Is it FAIR to all concerned

Will it build GOODWILL and BETTER
