RADO
Rado is the Swiss watch brand known for its innovative and award‑winning designs and its use of advanced technologies and materials. The company traces its origins to 1917, when three brothers in Lengnau, Switzerland, founded Schlup & Co., a maker of watch movements and components. In 1928 the company registered the Rado trade‑mark with the Swiss Office for Intellectual Property, declaring its intention to use it for “watches and watch components”.
From day one, Rado has turned visions into concrete realities. Pushing the boundaries of material technology and continually introducing the unexpected to Swiss watch‑making, Rado has gone from strength to strength. At Rado, technology, innovation, high‑tech materials and design combine to create luxury.
Key milestones in Rado’s impressive history so far include its iconic scratch‑resistant watch, pioneering high‑tech ceramic in watchmaking, the monobloc injected ceramic case, and the introduction of touch technology in a ceramic watch. Nothing gets in the way of Rado’s mission to discover, invent and innovate.
The latest collection shows Rado at its very best. Style and substance are the key to the future as Rado continues to create beautiful and eye‑catching watches that will stand the test of time.
RADO AND DESIGN
Design is an integral part of what Rado does, and is one of the reasons the brand has been awarded over 35 international design prizes. Rado has always focused on the exterior of its products, choosing a range of unusual materials to craft its groundbreak‑ing timepieces.
Since its beginnings, Rado has aimed to create watches of long lasting beauty. Starting with the iconic scratch‑resistant DiaStar 1 in 1962, the mission has evolved to find ever lighter, more durable scratch‑resistant materials for use in watchmaking.
From its first foray into the use of ceramic in 1986, Rado has developed the technology to produce innovative new designs in an ever‑growing array of high‑tech ceramic col‑ours and finishes. Recent design achievements include the debut of ceramic timepieces in deep blue and British racing green as well as the introduction of touch technology in ceramic watches.
Design, innovation and technology have all gone hand‑in‑hand to create the iconic products for which Rado is known worldwide, with the company’s founders’ words “If we can imagine it, we can make it, and if we can make it then we will” still holding true today.
RADO MILESTONES
5 | 1981 RADO ANATOMRado’s first ergonomically curved watch with a domed sapphire crystal. Tying in with the ergonomic design trend of the times, the hardmetal of the Anatom embraces the wrist with anatomical per‑fection. The starkly contrasting gold and black bracelet was made possible with a new chemical vapour deposition technique.
6 | 1986 RADO INTEGRALThe first Rado watch to use high‑tech ceramic on the bracelet and an invisibly affixed metallised sapphire crystal. The flamboyant bracelet made the watch a 1980s style statement that communi‑cates so much more than just the time.
7 | 1990 RADO CERAMICAThe first Rado watch to use black high‑tech ceramic for the case and the bracelet, which together form a single unit. This minimalist design icon, which evokes modernity, was redesigned in 2016 by Konstantin Grcic.
8 | 1991 RADO COUPOLE Another Rado first : white high‑tech ceramic, which to this day is a central material in the Rado collections.
9 | 1993 RADO SINTRAThis is the first Rado watch to use a titanium carbide‑based com‑posite, which combines lightness, hardness and stiffness at the same time. This innovation expanded the colour palette of Rado watches but had no other perceptible impact on the minimalistic design.
1 | 1957 RADO GOLDEN HORSE The first watch collection under the Rado brand name. With the new name the global market could be approached with a func‑tional, water‑resistant stainless steel model; a well‑designed watch with an accessible price tag.
2 | 1962 RADO DIASTAR 1At the beginning of the swinging sixties came the DiaStar 1, mar‑keted as the world’s first scratch‑resistant watch, a revolution in watchmaking history. A tungsten carbide (hardmetal) case and sapphire crystal production methods were pioneered to achieve an instantly recognizable watch with a wide bezel that could withstand the most extreme situations and still come out looking new.
3 | 1966 RADO MANHATTANA striking example of 60s design in an oversized rectangular case with water‑resistant properties that were exceptional for their time.
4 | 1976 RADO DIA 67 GLISSIÈRE The scratch‑resistant watch with a case entirely covered by an edge‑to‑edge metallised sapphire crystal marks Rado’s first but definite step towards eliminating non‑essential functions, overly complex forms and ornaments; a forerunner of Rado’s minimalistic watches. Note the bracelet integration into the case.
10 | 1998 RADO CERAMICAThe first Rado timepiece in plasma high‑tech ceramic. White ceramic is transformed through a plasma carburising process. The ceramic then takes on a unique warm metallic shine without the use of metal.
11 | 2002 RADO V10KThe case of what was touted as the world’s hardest watch is cov‑ered with a high‑gloss layer of synthetic nanocrystalline diamond coating to achieve a hardness of 10,000 Vickers. This atypical design with the case horizontally subdivided into three parts shows no visible crown and sports a black rubber strap.
12 | 2009 RADO R5.5Designed by Jasper Morrison, the case of the r5.5 features Rado’s first ever use of bracelet attachments with concave surfaces. The bracelet is flexible only up to a point, becoming rigid when fastened around the wrist, thus underlining its urban, industrial feel. The name is taken from the 5.5 mm corner radius of the case.
13 | 2011 RADO D‑STARThe D‑Star is an updated design of the legendary DiaStar 1 with a wider opening and monobloc case, created with younger urbanites in mind. The D‑Star is the first watch in Ceramos™, a titanium carbide‑based composite and injectable ceramic, which paved the way for unprecedented designs and taut lines.
14 | 2011 RADO TRUE THINLINERado’s thinnest ceramic watch has a thickness of less than 5 milli‑metres for the quartz models. The first Rado watch with a ceramic monobloc case, it corresponds with the archetypical shape of a wristwatch : a round dial based on the circular movement of the hands and a straight bracelet.
15 | 2012 RADO HYPERCHROMEThe complex monobloc case of the HyperChrome represents a breakthrough in technology as well as a step forward in design. Lightweight, extremely comfortable and eye‑catching, it also intro‑duces more timekeeping instruments onto the dial.
16 | 2013 RADO ESENZA CERAMIC TOUCHRado’s first high‑tech ceramic watch to use touch technology. Crownless, the watch is set using touch alone.
17 | 2014 RADO HYPERCHROME CERAMIC TOUCH DUAL TIMERRado’s first high‑tech ceramic touch watch with two time zones was also the first Rado timepiece made using cool grey high‑tech ceramic.
18 | 2015 RADO HYPERCHROME BROWN CERAMICRado brings a new colour to the world of high‑tech ceramic : chocolate brown, which provides an exclusive design touch, especially when combined with rose gold indexes and hands.
19 | 2016 RADO HYPERCHROME 1616The HyperChrome 1616 combines a design of the past – the 1970s TV‑shaped Cape Horn – with modern materials and a contempo‑rary size of 46 millimetres. The case is made of a new, exclusive type of hardened titanium.
20 | 2017 CERAMICA LIMITED EDITIONRado made waves in 2016 with the relaunch of its iconic Rado Ceramica collection in collaboration with renowned industrial designer Konstantin Grcic. In 2017 the brand took this visionary timepiece a step further, adding matt grey high‑tech ceramic and an automatic movement to the Ceramica collection for the first time ever.
RADO HYPERCHROMESeriously scratch‑resistant,
dangerously desirable
Featuring a monobloc high‑tech ceramic case, the Rado HyperChrome family repre‑sents a breakthrough in technology as well as a step forward in design. Lightweight, extremely comfortable and eye‑catching, the Rado HyperChrome is the ultimate every‑day all‑occasion timepiece.
Revolutionary.
RADO AND TENNIS
Rado has been synonymous with the world of tennis since it began sponsoring interna‑tional tournaments over two decades ago. This year is no exception, with Rado corner clocks timing every second of every match in tournaments around the world. Rado’s link to the world of tennis was originally inspired by the spirit of challenge and deter‑mination. Just as players push themselves to achieve victory on court, Rado pushes itself to challenge the boundaries of traditional watchmaking, successfully mastering innovative materials and achieving what many once believed was impossible.

RADO HYPERCHROME CAPTAIN COOK
A reinterpretation of a Rado watch collection from the 1960s, the new HyperChrome Captain Cook family offers timekeeping options for men and women who want to pull off a hip casual look with style and whimsy. Oversized indexes, chunky arrow‑shaped hands, and a rotating bezel in high‑tech ceramic and stainless or carbon‑diffused steel combine to give the Captain Cook an unmistakably retro aesthetic.
HyperChrome 1616
A reinterpretation of Rado’s vintage Cape Horn collection, the HyperChrome 1616 pays tribute to the 400‑year anniversary of the brave discovery of this South American head‑land. Despite its oversized, hypermasculine look, the HyperChrome 1616 is surprisingly light thanks to the two material choices offered by Rado : high‑tech ceramic or a new form of hardened titanium. With its rugged look and lightweight construction, this is a bold and comfortable timepiece for those willing to tread new sartorial ground.
RADO DIAMASTERThe new face of a Rado legend
Subtle, minimalistic and chic are the key words when it comes to the design of this simple, pared‑down collection. The new face of Rado has a new face of its own : large open dials for easy readability and an unobscured view. Crafted in high‑tech ceramic.
Appealing.

RADO CERAMICAThe iconic high‑tech ceramic watch
A design icon much imitated but never equalled, the Rado Ceramica is a bold presence on the wrist. In a new design by renowned industrial designer Konstantin Grcic, one of Rado’s most recognisable high‑tech ceramic timepieces has been given a contempo‑rary interpretation while retaining its strong geometrical shape.
Iconic.
Konstantin Grcic
Konstantin Grcic is one of the world’s foremost industrial designers. He has devel‑oped furniture, lighting, accessories and housewares for leading brands, with many of his products receiving prestigious international design awards. Known for his passion for technology and materials, Grcic was a natural choice for the 2016 redesign of the iconic Rado Ceramica, first launched in 1990. Famed for his pared‑down pieces, Grcic is often referred to as a minimalist, but the designer himself prefers to speak of simplicity.

RADO TRUE DESIGNERS’ SERIES
This year the Rado True collection is adding an exclusive series of limited edition time‑pieces in collaboration with renowned designers from around the world, each applying their individual style to this much sought‑after watch family.
Rado always looks to diverse outside industries for inspiration, and the True designers’ series was no exception. Prominent architects and sculptors as well as famous fashion and furniture designers were asked to bring their unique vision to the Rado True. Hailing from varied geographies and industries, each designer contributed something different in terms of design and technology, as well as challenges in making their vision for the Rado True come to life.
RADO TRUE PHOSPHO | CO‑DESIGNED BY BIG‑GAME (SWITZERLAND)The True Phospho embraces minimalism, but with playful and unexpected elements. The black brass dial is perforated, allowing the automatic movement below to peek through – a thoroughly modern approach to the traditional skeleton watch. The per‑forations also provide an opportunity for the application of the luminescent indexes, which are created by filling the empty spaces with Super‑LumiNova to create geometric shapes.
RADO TRUE STRATUM | CO‑DESIGNED BY RAINER MUTSCH (AUSTRIA)A contemporary black beauty, the True Stratum showcases a dial with asymmetrically arranged descending steps, which serve to emphasize the three dimensionality of the concave watch face. Further depth is added to the design with a perfectly centered black dot applied directly to the underside of the sapphire crystal, which hovers over and casts its shadow on the dial. The True Stratum features matt black surfaces that are crafted in Rado’s signature material, high‑tech ceramic.

RADO TRUE SHADOW | CO‑DESIGNED BY KUNIHIKO MORINAGA (JAPAN)The shiny midnight black surfaces of the True Shadow are crafted from polished high‑tech ceramic – Rado’s signature material, and one that is favoured among high‑end watchmakers for its beauty, comfort and scratch resistance. In the sunlight, the watch embraces its name and appears dark thanks to its blackened dial. In the absence of UV light, however, the shadow darkening the dial disappears, revealing a skeleton watch of great craftsmanship and beauty.
RADO TRUE FACE | CO‑DESIGNED BY OSKAR ZIETA (POLAND)Gently concave in structure, the dial of the True Face consists of a thin disc of stainless steel that has been polished to achieve a mesmerizing reflective finish. The reflective properties of the dial are further maximized by the addition of an unexpected detail : The underside of the matt grey hands has been given a rose gold‑coloured finish, allowing the hands to be reflected in a different hue.
RADO TRUE BLAZE | CO‑DESIGNED BY SAM AMOIA (USA)The Rado True Blaze is a celebration of glitz and glamour. Housed in a plasma high‑tech ceramic case, the watch evokes a disco ball feeling on the wrist. The dial looks as though it were completely covered in a layer of silvery metallic slivers, giving the appearance of a glittery explosion. Despite this ostentatious element, the watch main‑tains a minimalist feel thanks to the unique placement of the gold‑coloured logo and indexes directly on the underside of the glass.
RADO TRUE CYCLO | CO‑DESIGNED BY PHILIPPE NIGRO (FRANCE)A harmonious blend of matt black and silver surfaces, the True Cyclo impresses with its smooth and understated appearance. The silver‑coloured dial boasts a satin fin‑ish, concave shape and round date window. The hands, logo, and rounded, recessed indexes all feature the same slightly contrasting grey‑coloured finish – a study in sim‑plicity that does not disregard detail. A matt black high‑tech ceramic case houses the discrete yet powerful creation.

RADO TRUE THINLINEThe thinnest Rado high‑tech
ceramic watch
This is an elegant high‑tech masterpiece – one that also resists blemishes to withstand the test of time. Ultra‑thin, amazingly light and scratch‑resistant, these could be the most comfortable watches in the world.
Extraordinary.
RADO MATERIALS
HIGH‑TECH MATERIALSOnly the best materials are approved to produce Rado watches. The result is durable and beautiful – a watch for life.
HIGH‑TECH CERAMICIn 1986 Rado pioneered the use of high‑tech ceramic, which has played a pivotal role in Rado watches ever since. High‑tech ceramic timepieces are objects of art and craftsmanship : Their smooth stylish surfaces can be metallic or matte, crafted in an ever‑expanding array of colours.
PLASMA HIGH‑TECH CERAMICKnown for its striking and mysterious metallic brilliance, Rado’s plasma high‑tech ceramic is forged in an oven at high temperatures. Gases activated at 20,000°C trans‑form finished white ceramic into a unique material with an otherworldly metallic shine – but without the use of any metal. The warm grey metallic colour that emerges from each piece will not fade over time, retaining its naturally scratch‑resistant shine for years to come.
HARDMETALIn 1962, Rado introduced the Rado DiaStar 1 to the watch market, a scratch‑resist‑ant watch at a time when this was far from the norm. The secret of this creation? Hardmetal. Even today hardmetal remains an important aspect of Rado watches. Thanks to its exceptional hardness hard metal is more durable than steel, gold and platinum and defies the marks of everyday life.
SAPPHIRE CRYSTALSapphire crystal is used in all Rado watches. Convex, facetted or flat it underscores their dynamic profile and creates a seamless transition from the bracelet and case to the crystal. Rado’s innovative use of metallisation on the surface of the crystal lends additional distinction.
HIGH‑TECH DIAMONDIncomparable timeless brilliance. For decades Rado had envisaged making watches from a material as hard as natural diamond. As a result of painstaking research and use of cutting‑edge nanotechnology the Rado dream became a reality. With its uniquely resistant diamond surface the Rado V10K achieves a hardness of 10,000 Vickers.
RADO CENTRIXElegance in clarity
The shape and style of the Rado Centrix make this a watch to desire. The tapered lightweight bracelet gently embraces the wrist, offering exquisite comfort as well as uncompromising luxury and sophistication.
Classic.
CENTRIX OPEN HEART
A unique east‑meets‑west timepiece, the Centrix Open Heart features a dial with sym‑bolic elements that represent the Chinese Valentine’s story. According to legend, two lovers separated by a cruel fate are able to meet once a year, on the seventh night of the seventh moon, when all the world’s magpies fly together and form a bridge to reunite the star‑crossed lovers for just one night.
The upside‑down crescent‑shaped dial leaves the bottom half of the timepiece’s mechanics completely exposed, representing the bridge of magpies upon which the lov‑ers stand. A stylized keyhole at noon further reveals the beating heart of the automatic movement, symbolizing the seventh moon under which the lovers meet. Diamonds represent the stars in the sky, and the two hands represent the lovers themselves.
RADO COUPOLE CLASSICA modern watch with a decidedly vintage feel
Inspired by Rado watches from the 60s, the Coupole Classic brings back vintage design with a modern twist. Made in stainless steel with sapphire crystal anti‑reflective coating on both sides, some models include middle bracelet links in black high‑tech ceramic or warm metallic Ceramos™, an accent that is uniquely Rado.
Timeless.
