What are the potential options for the future?
• You should be able to assess the potential for ‘sustainable cities’ in rural Britain
• You should evaluate the pros and cons of the effects of these in rural Britain
• So, what are the options?

What do you think this is?
• This is an Algae Farm• They are large salt water ponds in which algae
grows • Oil can be extracted from these algae on the site of
the farm and transported to company bio diesel refineries via barge, rail or lorry
• This is a sustainable method of producing fuel and these farms can be located practically anywhere- even on the outskirts of urban areas, as long as there is enough land
• What do you think about these being constructed on green belt or green field land?
• What are the SWOT of these?

Britain’s new eco-towns
• Eco towns are a controversial programme of sustainable new towns to be built on existing green field sites
• 13 areas are being considered for new eco towns, providing up to 15 000 homes in each location
• Eco-towns have certain requirements for the environment, the economy and for people.

Britain’s new eco-towns
• The objectives of eco-towns were to offer the opportunity to achieve high standards of sustainable living while also maximising the potential for affordable housing.
• They may be ‘zero-carbon’ developments• The environment: consider energy use, and
where the energy is from• Economic issues: jobs should be within or near
to the community• Social issues: communities need to support a
secondary school (4000-5000 homes) they need to have a mixture of people.
