Times may be hard for us at this current time however our effort, determina-tion, spirit and togetherness can never be questioned. It is frustrating as a fanwatching and seeing the array of quality footballers on show for the Boroughbut basic mistakes are being punished far too frequently.

In my last blog I was emphasising my worry on our lack of goals, my words ofmotivation obviously worked as we have scored 5 in our last two. Howeverhaving said that we somehow lost to Squires Gate 4-3 a couple of weeks ago.In the first half we really could have scored 6 or 7 and in the second half wejust didn’t keep the intensity up unfortunately.

I think the most important thing at this current time is to stop leaking so manygoals.

All it takes is a win to lift the spirits, a big win today could change everything!

Enjoy the game!

Today it gives me great pleasure to welcome everyone from Runcorn Linnets espe-cially their supporters to whom do not only get behind their team in great numbers athome but also they do travel well away. I always enjoy their visit for several reasons;the atmosphere they bring, their humour and whit (usually aimed at me) but most ofall from our clubs point of view they do bring with them much needed revenue so tothis end I do personally thank you all.

Obviously when it comes down to the football on the day we will not be wanting thesame outcome and I can’t really say that we need the points more than they do be-cause it is a well-known fact that Runcorn Linnets are desperate to get promotion in-to the higher grades of football, apart from the twice we will meet them in the leagueI do wish them all the best in their quest to achieve this.

Now back to ourselves and where we are to date; a bad start to the season in theleague, out of the FA Cup & FA Vase both at the first time of asking is not in any waya good start, in fact it is extremely poor and one I am really ashamed of but rest as-sured I am working really hard in trying to secure the services of much more allaround better equipped players for the level we are playing at. However you mustalso realise this is not easy to achieve when we are a club with very little resources tobe able to attract this kind of player financially, sadly this is what it does come downto and I have gone on record of saying it before and now I am going to say it again, Iwill not over stretch the financial mark of this historic club that in the long run couldput this clubs future in jeopardy, yes it hurts me that results are as they are, yes ithurts me where we currently stand in the league but make no mistake it would de-stroy me if this clubs future was in serious trouble due to over spending in order tobe competing for success. The outcome on the pitch over the next ensuing weekswill sort themselves out however long term providing we can ride this storm the fu-ture is bright as there are some excellent people working in the background behindthe scenes which are putting into place the infrastructure in order to bring in the fi-nances in order to progress the club, this both at senior and junior level. It is not whatis currently happening; it is working towards what will happen and where we are go-ing in the future.

On another note if you look at the current league table both in our league and theEvo-Stik League it is no surprise the teams down there at the bottom are teams inwhich are going through transitional periods and with this do not have the budget tobe a winner. I have said it for years, teams near the bottom generally are teams that have very little or no budget, nothing changes, what must change is for my staff tofind ways to generate the money which will help us compete on an equal playing fieldwith our counterparts.

On Tuesday with us not having a mid-week game I ventured over to one of myformer clubs Accrington Stanley as they were playing Manchester United in the Lan-cashire Cup. Bacup's Reece James along with Tyler Blackett & James Wilson were inthe United team all of which have had first team action under LVG. Whilst I did enjoythe game I must admit I did not like what I witnessed in terms of how Man Utd did gotwo goals down very early on in the game, both goals coming from free kicks, bothgoals were scored against defending so poor which I have witnessed with BARB, thedifference being when we have conceded by the way United did we have not comeback. On Tuesday United did with a 4-2 win mainly due to top drawer finishes andthat is why strikers are worth their weight in gold, natural finishers we did not haveand neither have we the finances to source one. Although having seen Glodi Kuba-Kuba in his opening three games for us we may just have unearthed a good one butwe will continue to work hard with the lads we have got and hope that lady luck willshine and hope we will produce more three points than not starting today would benice & with this secure our status in this tough league we are competing in.

Enjoy the game

Runcorn Linnets Football Club was born on 28 April 2006, when the fans of Runcorn Football Club, dis-mayed at the club’s predicament, met at their spiritual home at the Quayside in Canal Street in Runcornand voted to establish a new club which would continue the proud tradition of non-League football whichhad existed in the town since 1918. A large group of fans formed an interim committee to set the wheels inmotion. A Supporters Trust already existed and this was the vehicle through which the new club would berun. At this early stage, the club existed in name only, and the choice of the name Runcorn Linnets wassymbolic in representing where the fans had come from and in keeping those ties with our past, whilst at thesame time recognising that a new club needed to be built to re-establish confidence in the local community. To start a new club from scratch with only 4 months to the start of a new season was a mammoth task, andthe newly formed committee drew up business and action plans to attempt to achieve their objectives. Nego-tiations were opened on many fronts, with the FA, the Cheshire FA, the North West Counties League, Sup-porters Direct and Witton Albion Football Club. We received a vast amount of advice and support from allof these bodies and were hugely grateful to them all for their help. The Chairman and Board of Directors atWitton Albion FC extended the hand of friendship and offered us a ground share for the season, as no suit-able venue was immediately available back in Runcorn. This we were delighted to accept. A Roll of Honourwas established on our website in recognition of the support offered to us by fans and friends in those earlydays. We were supported by our local council and MPs in our bid for a place in the league for the start ofseason 2006/07. The members of the committee worked tirelessly to achieve our objective and we weredelighted when we were finally accepted into the league by the member clubs on Saturday 17 June 2006 atthe AGM in Buxton. It was a proud day for all of us and we were grateful to be given the opportunity tore-build a non-League club representing Runcorn and with the firm aim of moving the club back to its rootsat the earliest opportunity. Former manager and player for Runcorn FC Halton, Steve Carragher, agreed tojoin as manager. Steve had vast non-League experience and we were delighted for him to lead the team inthis new venture. The old Runcorn FC started life back in the Cheshire League, so it was perhaps fittingthat we had this chance to re-build in the League that was formed from an amalgamation of that league andthe Lancashire Combination. We enjoyed our first season immensely in 2006/07, visiting some new grounds and making new friendsalong the way and to achieve promotion in our first season was a just reward for the effort put in by somany fans. We finished second to Winsford on goal difference. Our supporters, as always, turned out innumbers to support the team and visit lots of new grounds. In season 2007/08 we entered the FA Vase for the first time, but lost at the First round stage to a strongSalford City team, which ultimately gained promotion. We had success in the Cheshire Senior Cup, beatingUnibond 1 side Warrington T on their own ground and narrowly losing to Altrincham. We averaged aroundthe 180 mark at home and often had a following of up to 100 fans at away grounds. Our desire to relocateback into Runcorn was always an integral part of our plans and we named our scheme R2R “Return toRuncorn”. At the beginning of 2008, the club decided to part with its management team by mutual consentand we appointed Steve Wilkes as our new manager, with goalkeeper Robbie Holcroft as his assistant. Ste-ve used the second half of that season to look at players old and new. Overall season 2007/08 will be seen

as one of consolidation in a higher league, with a better standard of football. Our mid-table finish was aboutright. We entered the FA Cup for the first time in season 2008/09 with a home tie against Rossington Main win-ning 3-2. Unfortunately, we then came up against a strong Curzon Ashton team and bowed out of the com-petition at the next stage. Curzon ultimately progressed into the First Round proper. In the FA Vase, wehad a good run up to the Third Round Proper. We then came up against Vase holders, AFC Fylde, wherewe lost 4-1 after a very tight first half. Good wins at Alsager and at home to AFC Fylde in the Vodkat Cupput The Linnets into the semi-finals against Silsden. A defeat in the home leg was followed up with a fight-ing performance at Cougar Park, which saw The Linnets through to the final at Tameside Stadium against avery strong New Mills side, where we ended as runners-up by 2 – 0Season 2009/10 saw The Linnets again finish in mid table with little real success in the cup competitions. The main traget throughout this time had been to get the club back into the townIn June 2009 we were able to release the news that our plans for a new ground had received the support ofthe Halton Borough Council Executive Board and just before Christmas we received the excellent news thatwe had received a grant of over £93000 from the FSIF. Our original plans had been to play at the River-side College, but now, with the help of the council and the FSIF grants, we have now developed a site at theHalton Sports complex within the town. Building on the new ground started at the beginning of February2010 and was completed over the summer. The club also announced a new club sponsor, Millbank, a UKmarket leading resource management solution provider, who operate from headquarters in Runcorn, whohave signed up to a three year deal with the club, commencing in 2010, with the option of a two yearextension. The new ground will be known as The Millbank Linnets Stadium and the opening ceremony onJuly 17th 2010 when Witton Albion were our visitors, attracted a crowd of over 1000 fans and this wasfollowed up on the opening day of the season with a new record league gate for The Linnets of 508 againstColne.Season 2010/11 was the first back in Runcorn and saw The Linnets part company with the managementteam of Steve Wilkes and Ian McGarry towards the end of August 2010 and former Linnet Paul McNallywas appointed as the new manager bringing in former Atherton LR manager, Dave Hughes, as his assistantand Chris Fitzsimmons as coach. A rebuilding process took place during the season and the Linnets fin-ished the season strongly. The most encouraging feature of season 2010/11 was the tremendous supportthe Linnets received from their fans. The average attendance at the Millbank Linnets Stadium was 106% upon the previous season and almost 50% higher than the next best supported team. The summer saw newdrainage on the MLS pitch and a new irrigation system installed. In 2011/12 the club achieved its highest ever finish in the NWCL when we came fifth. A great start to theseason in the league was interspersed with cup success, but this brought us a large number of replays andno league games were played during September. The highlight of the cup runs was the 4-0 defeat of Evo-stick North opponents Mossley after a 0-0 draw at Seal Park. We finally exited the FA Vase up in theNorth East at Hebburn. Perhaps the most memorable game of the season came at Stone with an 8-5 victo-ry and 3 hat tricks in the game. Those present will long remember it! During the season 7 player and man-ager awards came the way of The Linnets, but the weather conspired against us during the winter monthsand November saw us drop off the leading group when mental fatigue finally appeared to tell. From then onwe were playing catch up in the league and despite best efforts we ended the season in fifth place, althoughour victory over our near neighbours on Easter Monday was to have a great bearing on the final outcome ofthe title as well as providing the league’s biggest gate of the season. The Linnets were once again the bestsupported team by some margin.

Bacup & Rossendale Borough gave it a real go and could have forced extra-time beforecrashing out of the FA Vase to Yorkshire contingents Selby Town.Manager Brent Peters and his first-team coach Andy Barlow had a week to choose theeleven to start and they made four changes welcoming back Calvin Crooks along withthree others making debuts in Patrick Wilkes, Mitchell Brown and David Kuba-Kubabrother of Glodi. On a brisk autumnal day in North Yorkshire it was in fact the home side who started thebrighter. The towering number nine of Danny Gray looked an aerial threat from the offand his header was kept out by a superb fingertip save from Jakovlevs. It was Gray again moments later as his header was cleared off the line.Bacup had to make a change within the first few minutes with Calvin Crooks pulling up, hewas replaced by Matty Bryan.Selby were playing it long every time and to be fair to them it was playing to theirstrengths and it was working. Jakovlevs had to pull off another top save, this time fromRich Medcalf, Callum palmed it away one-handed superbly. Selby opened the scoring on27 minutes as Gray headed in at the back post, way too easily conceded from a Bacup per-spective.However just three minutes later Bacup equalised, David Kuba-Kuba pressed well andwon a 50-50 before running clean through on goal and he stroked it home expertly.A rollercoaster of a five minutes was climaxed when Selby regained the lead just two min-utes after BARB levelled. Nathan Kamara blasted right into the top corner.David Kuba-Kuba was proving the biggest threat to Selby’s defence as he tested goalkeep-er Adam Mitchell.Right on half-time there seemed to be a scuffle in the box from a corner and Bacup’sShaun Plummer seemed to be grabbed on the throat by the Robins’ keeper, officials can’thave seen it.

The second half started symmetrical to the first with the home side on the front foot andjust five minutes in and they made it 3-1. Nathan Kamara scored his second with an acro-batic volley into the far corner.

After this goal went in the game was pretty much dominated by Bacup. David Kuba-Kubaagain making goalkeeper Mitchell go low full stretch to keep him out. As Bacup were 3-1down but doing all the attacking they needed a goal soon and on 72 minutes they came soclose. Glodi Kuba-Kuba this time shrugs off one then beats another and bends a beauty to-wards the far corner but it bounces off the crossbar. However, just two minutes later andthey did get a goal back. Substitute Omar McKenzie stood over a free-kick just outside thebox on the right flank and he fizzed it across goal, David Kuba-Kuba ran in front but in the endnobody touched it and it went right through into the back of the net.

With 15 to go it was still all BARB as they look for an equaliser. Selby started to look incrediblytired as they dropped deeper and deeper and invited Bacup onto them. However theycouldn’t quite create that big chance, the closest they came was from a corner in which ShaunPlummer’s glance was whacked off the line somehow.

Much to the annoyance for the Borough Selby sealed it in the dying seconds as a free-kick waschipped in and Danny Gray got his second from a free header.

When turning onto CowtootLane it may appear there are nospaces due to cars being parkedon both sides of the roads but ifyou drive right to the top of theroad there is a gateway on theright where is a school car-parkwhich we can use so please do!

Bacup & Rossendale Borough conceded too many sloppy goals which meant they surrendereda two goal lead twice against Squires Gate.Boro boss Brent Peters made four changes to the midweek loss to Barnoldswick. Alex Val-derama (no relation to Carlos) made his debut; Plummer, Cosgrave and Jacob Brown werepromoted to the starting line-up.In recent matches the first ten minutes or so for BARB have been nothing short of sluggish buttoday was the polar opposite to that. A minute after Luke Morgan cleared Jack Cook’s headeroff the line Bacup took a very early lead. Glodi Kuba-Kuba broke down the right-hand side, paused and delivered an inviting cross that Shaun Plummer couldn’t refuse as he heads into thebottom corner. Having not scored in our last three matches this was a delight in itself to getthe ball rolling once again.Bacup still looked vulnerable at the back however as Jake Forshaw’s back post headerdropped only just wide.Having said that BARB looked absolutely frightening going forwards and on 12 minutes it was2-0. Gate skipper Daniel Penswick dawdled on the ball, Shaun Plummer was hungrier andpinched it off him. Martin Cosgrave then slotted in Kuba-Kuba who slotted it past goalkeeperBen Fletcher with ease. What an incredible start for the Borough, now you felt they needed to keep going and get acrucial third goal and they really should have been 3-0 up inside 25 minutes with an absolutelygolden chance. Kuba-Kuba was the star man for BARB, you could tell Squires Gate were abso-lutely petrified of him as he was winning every battle and this chance came about as he gam-bled and found himself bearing down on goal one-on-one with Fletcher but he put it wide. This miss looked even bigger when four minutes later Gate were right back in the game. JackSowerby got on the front foot and ran right through the Boro defence and he slotted it pastJakovlevs. It was nearly 2-2 shortly after as Joshua Westwood somehow headed over from anotherdreaded corner.Just two minutes later this pulsating match took another twist as BARB restored their two goallead and deservedly so. Jacob Brown played a long ball into the right channel after a SquiresGate corner which Kuba-Kuba latched onto as he faced up the opposing defenders. His feetwere mesmerizing as he jinked past not one, not two but three defenders and he blasts at goalwhich is saved but the incoming Sam Crook smashes it into the back of the net much to hisand the team’s delight.

However what is that famous football saying……….you are most vulnerable when you havejust scored and by gosh that was true today. Almost from the kick-off Squires Gate pulled thedeficit back to just one goal again. A cross came in from the right too easy and Jake Forshawflicked into the far post.Borough were still looking incredibly dangerous going forward especially through that man Ku-ba-Kuba as he should have had a first half hat-trick at least. On 42 minutes he struck powerful-ly just wide and a minute from the break he missed a glorious chance to go into half-time 4-2up. He gambled beyond the defence again and received his rewards as the Gate defence mis-judged and Glodi was through on goal, he rounds the goalkeeper but just takes it too far andtoo tight an angle so he back heels to substitute Mo Hussein who blasts over from very closerange.

Into the second-half and BARB really needed to keep the performance intensity level the sameas the first half however it wasn’t the case as Gate started off much brighter and levelled thegame just ten minutes in. From a Bacup goal kick Squires Gate dispossessed and AlexanderMurphy finished it well but from a Bacup point of view it was far too easy and could have beenavoided easily.BARB unfortunately could not repeat the first-half performance but Kuba-Kuba went closeagain on 68 minutes as a rip snorting strike from 25 yards was met by a fingertip save fromBen Fletcher.Eight minutes later however and the away side nudged into the lead. Jack Sowerby again got inbehind with his pace, took it past Jakovlevs and smashed it in.It was a much less frenetic half but the home side had one final push to get a point they de-served at the bare minimum. Shaun Plummer and Sam Crook both headed tamely into thegoalkeepers arms, Adrian Bellamy blazed wildly wide from a tight angle and Kuba-Kuba triedhis luck from range again but it was easily dealt with. The best chance fell to Sam Crook aftersome good battling by Bellamy and Plummer as he got in behind and opted to put it acrossgoal but the shot looked like the best option.
