ABOUT QRCQueen of the Rosary College (QRC), Onitsha was founded in 1942 by His Grace, Most Rev. Dr. Charles Heerey, C.S.Sp., the then Archbishop of Onitsha. The aim of the school was, and still is, to train girls spiritually, morally, academically, socially, and physically. The first site of the school was at Enugu, the then Capital of the Eastern region of Nigeria. It was situated at the present location of St. Pauls Publications bookshop in the Old Fathers House at the Holy Ghost Parish, Enugu. In 1949, it was transferred to its present site at Oguta Road, Onitsha. The school was run by Holy Rosary Sisters from Ireland.
As you may well know, QRC is one of the first, and was the most enviable Catholic School for girls in Nigeria. During her glorious years, QRC students were known to be highly disciplined and they always excelled in academic performance as well as in extra-curricular activities such as drama, debate, and sports. The school boasts of producing many professionals in all spheres of life. Fondly referred to as Umu Q they include educationists, lawyers, magistrates and judges, doctors, nurses, commissioners, permanent secretaries, Reverend Sisters, senators, members of House of assembly, House Speaker, and the list goes on-----. QRC was the pride of the old Eastern Region of Nigeria.
Today, the school has lost her original glory. Amidst pernicious adversities occasioned by dilapidating infrastructure and lack of equipments, her pride no longer exists. Umu Q Alumnae worldwide have therefore decided to intervene and avert the imminent demise of our legendary institution and restore Q to her original glory. There is a sense of urgency in this venture because the way to QRC leads to the way of truth, integrity, and success.

association has finally come of age. It is strong and getting stronger by day. Many chapters are opening in Nigeria and beyond. I acknowledge the efforts of the president of Lagos Chapter, Mrs. Chizor Attueyi-Malize in sensitizing the base. No matter what challenges that are facing QRC, I am confident that this association is braced to overcome them. The future of post-war QRC is no more uncertain and she is now looking ahead to a brighter tomorrow. Our collective mission is to bring QRC back to her old glory as we celebrate our 75-year anniversary in 2017.
I wish to express a deep appreciation to all Alumnae in the Americas for their support and efforts. We are doing well today because of your collective advocacy, drive, support and goodwill.
The pivotal roles of Anambra State Government and the Catholic Diocese of Onitsha must be applauded. I commend the school principals for their efforts and dedications in soliciting for help and executing the projects. In all, three principals have worked with this Alumnae Association. Mrs Akpuokwe initiated some projects and made some progress. Mrs Ekwenibe was very supportive. The current principal, Rev. Sr. Maria Chijioke Nwankwo has taken the campaign to a totally new level, liaising with and energizing all the Alumnae chapters. She oversees the execution of projects with extraordinary care and detail.
In addition, I want to thank the Obi of Onitsha, His Majesty, Nnaemeka Alfred Achebe, CFR, mni (Agbogidi) for his fatherly support of the school. I also thank His Grace, the Catholic Archbishop of Onitsha, Archbishop Valerian Maduka Okeke for his leadership and guidance. Our heartfelt gratitude goes to the former governor of Anambra State, Mr Peter Obi. He was always there for us and his exceptional contributions to the reconstruction of the school will forever be remembered.
I also welcome and appreciate the support of His Excellency, the Governor of Anambra State, Chief (Dr.) Willie Obiano and his beautiful wife, the First Lady of Anambra State, Chief (Mrs) Ebelechukwu Obiano (Osodieme). You have always been a strong supporter of this association. QRC Alumnae association and the entire staff and student body of QRC look forward to enjoying your friendship and continued support, as we look ahead to a brighter tomorrow.
Thank you.
Ngozi Okose, Ph.D
On behalf of the entire Umu Q, thank you for choosing to spend this evening with us.
This is our 3rd National Convention and it is, like previous conventions, all about Queen of the
Rosary College (QRC) in Onitsha, Nigeria.
The essence of the convention cannot be fully captured without a reference to the history of QRC, no matter how brief. A key milestone in her history of seven decades of existence was the Nigeria civil war. It is a milestone, which is used to describe the school as pre-war QRC and post-war QRC.
Pre-war QRC was a quintessential catholic female secondary school. Her architectural forms were magnificent, powerful and beautiful. The students were elegant, resplendent and dazzling in clean red and white uniforms. Academic excellence, high moral standards rooted in Christian values and many other virtues were integral part of the culture. Pre-war QRC enjoyed the admiration of all, and she was indeed the heartbeat of the Ibo community.
Post-war QRC has a different story. Nature was not very nice to her. She has a checkered history of deterioration and dilapidation. She was on the brink but timely help arrived and reversed the downward spiral. Today post- war QRC has a new look, a new attitude and a new promise because of much needed robust interventions. A pictorial narrative in the brochure and slides tells it all.
At the centerpiece of this turnaround, and fundamental to future success, is an outstanding group of women who were once students of the school. They are from all walks of life. They are beautiful and successful women in all aspects. They are dedicated to improving the welfare of the school. They still live and operate in the context of good values instilled in them by the school, and they are determined to empower the school to recapture her old glory and even more. These are members of QRC Alumnae Association. I am proud and honored to be a member of this association and to share in its collective experience. Ours is a collaborative effort and the Alumnae

At the mountain of God, Horeb, Elijah came to a cave where he took shelter. Then the LORD said to him, Go outside and stand on the mountain before the LORD; the LORD will be passing by. A strong and heavy wind was rending the mountains and crushing rocks before the LORD but the LORD was not in the wind. After the wind there was an earthquake but the LORD was not in the earthquake.
After the earthquake there was fire but the LORD was not in the fire. After the fire there was a tiny whispering sound. When he heard this, Elijah hid his face in his cloak and went and stood at the entrance of the cave. The word of the Lord. Thanks be to God

I believe in one God, the Father Almighty Maker of heaven and earth, and of all things visible and invisible. and in one Lord Jesus Christ, the Only-begotten Son of God. Born of the Father before all ages. God of God, Light of Light, true God of true God. Begotten, not made: consubstantial with the Father; by Whom all things were made. Who for us men, and for our salvation, came down from heaven. And was incarnate by the Holy Ghost of the Virgin Mary: and was made man. He was crucified also for us, suffered under Pontius Pilate, and was buried. And on the third day He rose again according to the Scriptures. And He ascended into heaven, and sitteth at the right hand of the Father. And He shall come again with glory to judge the living and the dead: of Whose kingdom there shall be no end. And in the Holy Ghost, the Lord and Giver of Life: Who proceedeth from the Father and the Son. Who together with the Father and the Son is adored and glorified: Who spoke through the Prophets. And in One, Holy, Catholic and Apostolic Church. I confess one Baptism for the remission of sins. And I look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life + of the world to come. Amen.
Gospel Matthew 14:22-33 After he had fed the people, Jesus made the disciples get into a boat and precede him to the other side, while he dismissed the crowds. After doing so, he went up on the mountain by himself to pray. When it was evening he was there alone. Meanwhile the boat, already a few miles offshore, was being tossed about by the waves, for the wind was against it. During the fourth watch of the night, he came toward them walking on the sea. When the disciples saw him walking on the sea they were terrified. It is a ghost, they said, and they cried out
in fear. At once Jesus spoke to them, Take courage, it is I; do not be afraid. Peter said to him in reply, Lord, if it is you, command me to come to you on the water. He said, Come. Peter got out of the boat and began to walk on the water toward Jesus. But when he saw how strong the wind was he became frightened; and, beginning to sink, he cried out, Lord, save me! Immediately Jesus stretched out his hand and caught Peter, and said to him, O you of little faith, why did you doubt? After they got into the boat, the wind died down. Those who were in the boat did him homage, saying, Truly, you are the Son of God.

Rev. Sr. Maria Chijoke Nwankwo Principal, QRC Onitsha
Message from National Chaplain of ICCUSAQ 2014 Star Alumna
Rev. Sr. Maria Chijioke Nwankwo is the principal of QRC where she is currently working tirelessly with exceptional leadership and dedication to transform the school into a new and improved ultramodern institution. She used to be a student of this school and after completing her secondary education, she left to pursue higher education and do spiritual work in many parts of Eastern Region. Now, she has returned to where it all started to serve her Alma mater. She does so with gratitude to a school that helped to mold her. She does so with all her might and without reservations. She is indeed remarkable and highly commendable. Rev. Sr. Maria Chijioke Nwankwo is driven by her passion for education and human development. Prior to becoming the principal of QRC, she served as the principal of Madonna Model Secondary School in Owerri. She also served as vice principal of Charles Heerey Memorial Juniorate in Uruala 1.
As an educationist, she has armed thousands of students with primary and secondary education for eventual progression to institutions of higher leaning and beyond. In 2006 she was recognized as the best administrator in private secondary schools in Imo State. Despite her busy schedules in education-related activities, Rev. Sr. Maria Chijioke Nwankwo is actively involved in youth empowerment. A recent award of excellence by QRC Alumnae, Lagos Branch and an award of community service by national Onitsha Ado Young Generation Forum are a testimony to her role in youth empowerment, another aspect of human development.
Rev. Sr. Maria Chijioke Nwankwo is faithful to her obligation to God. She has done spiritual work in many communities including Immaculate Heart Of Mary Convent, Uruala and Immaculate Heart of Mary Convent, Works Layout in Owerri. Rev. Mrs. Anna O. Quist (Nee Peters, Class of 1947)
Ma Quist was there for us in 2008 at the QRC Inaugural Convention in Houston, and we appreciate the support she gave us. Mama is a strong supporter of members in Houston. She made sure her daughter, Esther joins us as an Umu umu Q member so that Mama feels well represented amongst us. She has even hosted one of our meetings during which time Houston members celebrated her birthday. Mamas happiest moments are when she talks about her QRC experience and prides in the fact that her set was the first to move from Enugu to the present QRC location in Onitsha. MAMA DAALU FOR YOUR MOTHERLY ADVICE AND SUPPORT FOR THE ALUMNAE ASSOCIATION, We strive to offer activities that connect us with our alma mater in meaningful ways.

Message from Chaplain, Igbo Catholic Community of San Jose
Dear Sr. Mary Therese Ozomma ,
Your leadership of our alma mater,
Queen Of The Rosary College Onit-
sha has lifted the many classes of stu-
dents you touched at the time you
were the Principal of the School. Your
inspiring and insightful preachings,
admonitions and guides have helped
us through our different carriers. We
are particularly appreciative of your
disciplinary tactics which we tried
sometimes to resist but now find
indispensable in our adult lives. You
actually equipped us not only to
weather through difficult times in our
lives, but to show and lead the younger generations to become responsible young adults
as well. Beyond the academics, Queen of the Rosary College Onitsha has produced
God fearing and stable Catholics. This is a blessing we have inherited from growing up
under your watch, and now sharing with our families and, friends and colleagues. We
think of you at all times and hope that in retirement, you are gracefully enjoying the
excellent job you had, running a school that produced generations of successful women
with different carreers, and raising their own families. We will always have you in our
thoughts and prayers,
My family and I appreciate the time you invested in me. We thank you and shall always
remember your special kindness to the young ladies that were handed over to you to mold.
Happy 80th birthday.

QRC Experiences
As Ave Maria to whom the name of the school was derived from. Hail !!!! Mother of God and of the whole world. We honor you and thank God for making us what we are today. Q R C has trained millions of people. An adage says Train a woman , you have trained a nation. So much to remember of those days in the 1970s. I remember our teachers that we gave names: our Latin teacher that we called Dacha. Then we had Mr. Does Ukwu, Miss slim fit Magi. etc. Despite that, we still cherished them. We were just youthful and exuberant. I am sure they did not hold it against us. I equally remember Mrs. Nwachukwu, our French teacher , Mrs Onwuagana , the senior Hostel mistress and the Vice Principal. All of them have passed and joined the Lord. May their gentle soul rest in peace. Today, QRC made me Dr. Mrs Uche J Austin Okoli (Ejima Ejim). I am blessed with five children and recently two grand children, to the Glory of God. We are all living in Richmond Virginia. We are grateful to God on high, who brought us to this happy place (QRC), our Alma mater. QRC is a happy place and we were very happy to be there. The experience helped us excell in all that we do. We give our love to our teachers and to our Principals who made sure that we conformed to all the rules and regulations, that we studied, that we prayed and played, and that we conducted our selves as Ladies we were trained to be. Our motto is our pride. VIAM VERITATIS ELEGI.

It seems like yesterday, yet, decades ago when I first set my feet on QRC school grounds. My heart leaped with excitement as my parents car pulled up at the schools main entrance. The gateman swiftly swung open the huge gates and right there, high up in the air, was the statue of the Blessed Virgin Mary welcoming me. Behind the statue are two white two story classroom buildings with a connecting sky walk. In my little young eyes, they seemed like the giant walls of Jericho, shielding the rest of the school from outside view. These gigantic structures graced my sight, they reminded me of my business there, literally convinced me that the ground is set for my academic strides and actually elicited the message of hope for a successful outcome. Undoubtedly, I knew Q is it! The atmosphere was filled with anticipation from students arriving on the move-in day, suitcases and boxes being moved in the direction of the dormitories. The Matron, Mrs. Oku, (who happened to be my Moms friend) showed us to my dorm, St Joseph and to my six springs double bunk bed which I would share with another student. Shortly after, I watched my parents car disappear out of sight. And back in my small corner, reflections of the days events flooded my memory. They all seemed so surreal. Instantly, I realized this is not ogu nne na agbalu nwa. Thus were my first strides, finding myself alone and away from my family but not alone in my newly found Q family. I met my first friends: Ebere Nzeribe (my real neighbor) with whom I shared a common corner and Vero Obika (my side neighbor) whose bed was right next to mine. We refer to ourselves as neighbors. There was also a bunk neighbor (shares the bunk bed), foot neighbor and head neighbor. There was also the school mother-daughter family where a class 1 (freshman) student- daughter is entrusted in the care of a senior student- mother. Being so young and carefree, I was totally clueless and completely ignorant of my duties as daughter. The Principal, Mrs. Erinne, made matters even worse for most of us freshman ajebos by stressing the need for the mothers to care for the daughters. Nonetheless, I had a very pleasant caring school mother, Josephine Okoli, who ended up serving me instead of me her. When I became a senior, I had many juniors who voluntarily became my daughters. Between us, there was no telling who was the mother or the daughterI lived what I learnedi.e. we were all students and humans alike. I still remember them: Ngozi, Jacqueline, Rita and the triplets. A shout out to yall.

It seems like yesterday, yet, decades ago when I firI dreaded the sound of the early morning wake up bell that marked the beginning of a typical school day. But dressing up in my seamlessly ironed immaculate white cotton shirt, the Q red pinafore dress, white socks and brown Cortina sandals elevated my spirit and energized me through the school days. Lined up in the assembly ground, teachers and prefects would embark on inspection focusing on compliance to dress codes and grooming- values strongly emphasized and strictly enforced for an all girls school. On the first day of class, we would rush to secure the best and newest lockers, even the best spots in class. After school, we would change into our day uniforms, each house with a different color- yellow for my house. Study times (Prep) were observed in early morning and late evening with such devotion that the drop of a pin could be heard miles away. We would endlessly imbibe cups of coffee to stay up to study and or snack away on acada biscuit (kola nuts). For some students, significant sleep deprivation resulted and progressed to severe adverse effects usually AMS (altered mental status) - isi mgbaka. Blended with many subjects (from top sciences to the low Igbo-Igbo-BK), well designed curriculum, highly structured learning environment, fairly good nutritional diet, educational resources and experienced teachers, Q was well rounded and topped most schools academically. I still remember and apply some basics: Home Economics class (popularly called Home Econs) focused on general home management as cooking, baking, grooming, entertaining, sewing, etc. I learned to cut patterns, sew buttons, herm a dress, and stitch with needle. I taught all to my children. Chemistry the basic lab rule: pipette the base and burette the acid. English I before e except after c. Literature Shakespeares Merchant of Venice, Shylock oso nma. French ques que na afio. Music- Adeze Nwam a folk song composed and directed by our music teacher, Mr. Nebolisa. Remind me to sing it for you. The debut made box office.
Being a Christian missionary school, our religious faith was molded and nurtured- I got confirmed. Religious devotion was observed morning and evening for 30 minutes. Catholics prayed the Rosary and Anglicans had hymn and prayer sessions. More inspirational was the religious faith of our principal, Mrs. Erinne. She would pray fervently every morning in the assembly, relentlessly reiterating to us each time the order and importance of prayer. In her stunningly high pitched but gentle voice that assured God answers prayers she would say: first you praise God, then you thank God, then you ask for forgiveness of sins, then you ask for your needs. We would giggle and sometimes mimic her. It is little wonder to realize decades later that her voice has remained indelible in my brain. I have since prayed in the order she had taught us, been more persistent in prayer and above all had taught my children the same. I hope she gets to know how much and how positively her devoted Christian life impacted ours. The glam of social activities were not ignored even in our rather seriously structured academic life. My position as the Vice president of junior Debate Society provided me with a wealth of debating experience that I apply in the contemporary corporate world. We especially enjoyed debates with boys schools, braided our hair the night before and combed them into afro for the event. Some learned and danced to the beautifully choreographed steps and lyrics of Eje Nmili and Ode nji nji. There was Drama society, YCS and many others. We had visiting and outing days too. The height of Physical education was usually summed up in inter-house sports competition. In class 4, my house (St. Martin) took the first position in that years competition under my unbeatable coaching skills as the house games captain. In jubilation, my athletes lifted me up in the air, carried me through the entire school singing and rejoicing. I still maintained my sporting spirit, jogging or gyming at least 3 times a week, ha ha ha While it is true that to err is human and we sure were not saints, still, serving punishment was not one of the popular correctional measures in Q; most everyone behaved fairly well and respected one another. I served only two punishments in all my Q years, both times for noise making. First time was during junior lights out, when instead of retiring quietly in bed, the juniors, young and nave, were outrageously excited about some weird stuff, shouting film show repeatedly and getting very unruly.

Dont ask me why! The senior prefect and house captain made us kneel in front of the house as punishment. The second time was in class 3. Despite that I was the class prefect; I joined forces with Maureen Adibua (now Abadom) in noise making. We were loudly demonstrating some silly acts (whatever they were) and entertaining the class when caught red handed by our class master, Mr. Medani as we called him. I still dont know his real name. He made us cut the grass in the schools main entrance. Silly as we were, we nick named many of our teachers: Medani (combination of his names) - our math and physics teacher Slim Fit Maggie (she was very slim) our English teacher Un Pantalon e Large (French for large pants) - our geography teacher who wore buga lulu pants Short knicker Michael One in Town (Maggie Cube TV commercial modified with his real name Michael) he wore heavily starched and crisply ironed shorts. Bonjou Mademoiselle our French teacher As young as we were, we learned to stand up for justice and human rights. Due to austerity measure meal times were delayed, frequency, quality and quantity reduced with a parallel increase in tuition. We were getting more servings of cheap weevil infested beans, nauseous to many but delicious to the few mama agwa. Patience ran out as many students were hungry. All hell let loose as protests ensued that eventually broke into a huge riot. Carrying placards and tree branches we ran all over the school and eventually into the streets singing and shouting, Oh principal aguu na agu anyi o, o zikwa ten pounds o ka anyi kwulu nugwo nni. Q provided a safe haven and a cordial learning atmosphere that stirred an unscrupulous zeal to succeed. Q provided visions of hope and survival for a young secondary school student to behold. Q provided many beautiful heartwarming and personality shaping experiences on solid grounds where the strides of academic excellence would eventually emerge. Marked by its well defined focus, solid structure, strong devotion, and good recreation, academic life at Q was priceless, evident in the countless success stories of Umu Q alum worldwide.
To all who I met as I took my strides through Q, I say bravo and stride on. To all who passed through Q but passed on to eternal rest in our Lord, I say Rest in Peace. To all who went to Q and I am yet to meet in alum conventions or elsewhere, I implore to join in the efforts to fortify and sustain Q solidarity as we convene periodically. To the principal and the team of hard working staff members, I say knowledge is power And to the students I say fly high the flag of success proclaiming, Viem Veritatis ElegiI have chosen the way of truth.

QRC Experiences
I remember dreaming about QRC. Two of my older sisters attended QRC and they would fondly talk about how wonderful the school was. QRC was the best girls school of the time, and highly selective in admission. QRC was not just about academics. QRC was about morals, values, and spirituality. The mission of the founders of the school was to train a total woman in character and learning. That was, and is still being accomplished. I attended post war QRC, the period immediately after the Nigeria civil war. The eastern region of Nigeria was war torn and ravaged with poverty and destruction. My experience during the time I was there was good enough for me. As far as I was concerned, it was the best school in the world, and I was so proud to be a student of QRC. Just like every other school, there were nice and not so nice students. There were nice and not so nice teachers. I was bullied and called atinga woma because I was very little, very skinny, and my belt always slipped down my hip. Some people called those of us without well-defined curves Slipper Animalcule. A terminology we learnt from our biology class, the shape of an organism called paramecium. My class mates also gave me a nick name of Chinchin pepe because I liked to dance to a song of chin chin pepe and when I danced, my class mates would surround me as they sang and clap chin chin pepe, chin cnhin pepe, waist no time, mbo uhm, mbo uhm, waist no time. May be I was the class clown. I dont know if that is good. . But I know that I provided some entertainment for my classmates. I was not the only person with a nickname. Olive Mary Obieze was called Oli Phallanges, and she would always reply Ada nne yi v-------. (I dare not mention the word). Many of those names, instead of making us angry, actually made us laugh and sometimes became a source of entertainment, although at some peoples expense. We all survived it. It was a family. Oh! Those teachers. Mr. Tagbo, taught us biology and biology provided many names for entertainment. Apart from Slipper animalcule of paramecium mentioned above, shapeless people were also called Amoeba. Deep rooted pleasure/satisfaction is linked to medulla oblongata. Whenever we had privilege to have good food in the cafeteria, we would say it penetrated our medulla oblongata. Teachers were called names too. Our Latin teacher, Mr. Chukwurah, was popularly called Dacha, which we would usually conjugate as Dacha DachereDacharaDachatum.
Our French teacher, Late Mrs. Kwentoh, was called Qu est-ce que ce, Madame Kwentoh and we would always sing to the rhythm of her name. etc. Cafeteria? Oh! those beans loaded with those little things. We ate them anyway. It was double protein. Maybe, that is why I became very tall Oh! Again .Waking up by 5.00AM in the morning to fetch water and take a cold bath in the cold hammatan morning. Cutting grass with cutlass under the hot sun for punishment? That was cruel, I thought at the time. But each time I watch the American program, Survivor I realized that the QRC experiences was also training us on how to survive in any condition. That explains the success of most of us. The teachers were very strict and at the same time very nurturing. I remember those days of Holderness and Lambert (our Chemistry textbook), Nelkon (our physics textbook) and Stone and Cozin (Our Biology text book popularly translated by QRC students in Ibo language as Okwute na umu nna ya---Stone and his cousins). Oh how I hated to read those textbooks. But many of our teachers were very dedicated. They created age and class appropriate notes from the textbooks, making it easier for some of us to better understand the contents of those difficult but enriching books. I, personally, preferred to read the notes. Oh the math? No matter the problem area, Algebra, Geometry, or Arithmetic with all those word problems with tthe jargons of innings and first base and second base that we did not understand, we were always eager to end problems solved (correct or incorrect) with the initialization of Q.E.D (quod erat demonstradum). . Our Sister Principal, Sr. Mary Therese Ozomma is one of a kind In all, QRC was about strong quality education, strong morals, deep-rooted spirituality, and richness in language and culture. We all feared and loved her. For me, those were good old days I always reminisce with nostalgia.

Our mom has been exemplary in showing what a good foundational High School education can do. Our moms educational journey of excellence began when she attended Queen of the Rosary College, Onitsha. She fondly recounts tales of her alma mater experiences and said that her foundation in the sciences began during her stay in QRC. Our mom continues to instill in us the values she acquired from QRC and constantly emphasizes the need for us to be well grounded in character, integrity, honesty, diligence, and good organizational skills. These, according to her, are the pillars of success in life. These according to her were instilled in her during her stay in QRC. We have a good mom, and we believe that her deep faith in God stems from her early days of exposures to the preaching of the Bible. She told us that Bible Knowledge (one of the subjects she truly enjoyed and still enjoys) was a compulsory subject in the school. Thus fostering spiritual grounding of the students was a major factor of education in the school. We congratulate our mom, Dr. (Mrs.) Stella Ibuzo-Anozi and the entire members of QRC Alumnae in the Americas. Have a Great Convention!

QRC Experiences
I was admitted to QRC in 1981. Upon admission, I was assigned to St. Therese dormitory but was later changed to SMG. There I started my boarding school life. Residing in the dormitory wasnt an easy decision at first. The physical separation from my family and friends made it very emotionally difficult. After some terms, I overcame the difficulties and gradually adapted to life in boarding school. Leaving in the dormitory was like venturing into something unfamiliar. I later found the experience fun and very exciting. I was part of a community where the willingness to explore new things is inherent in the student body. For most part, it was full of pleasant memories of various kinds. I came in contact with many people, students, teachers, Rev. Sisters and all. Some of the students were friendly and mixed freely, while some were more reserved. But I now realize that each person had his or her unique qualities that I tapped from. All helped enhance me and made me the person that I am now. I repeatedly made ventures into the unknown, met new types of people, learned new skills and subjects, and challenged myself to a higher academic standard. QRC made me learn a little bit more about myself and I become more comfortable with who I am. I experienced a lot of personal growth and increased self-confidence. QRC was a lot of fun. Can one imagine living in a house with a bunch of loved ones? My dormitory mates became my closest friends and support network. The friendship I made in QRC environment is the one I remember now and those friends are hard to find in other environments. QRC created a strong network of people and a feeling of community that last for life. The memory of Late Mother Eucharia Anyaegbunam, the principal at the time remains vivid in my mind. So also are those of the Vice Principal, Mme Kwentoh and my House Mistress, Rev. Sister Patrick. They inculcated such great values and instilled strong discipline in me. They had great hold on the students. Late Mother Eucharia was an ideal leader, educator, mother, and mentor. Her influence in emphasizing Christianity to students and shaping the students moral character was great. Religion was first and foremost in QRC. The students day starts with 6:00am Rosary followed by morning Mass and ending the day with evening rosary at 6:00pm.
It was a very structured and disciplined environment which helped me to learn how to take charge and became responsible for my own actions to a much greater degree. I made choices on time management and how to create a reasonable balance between study and play. I also learnt how to recognize opportunities. I teach these to my children now. My experience in QRC made me to believe that the school had an explicit mission to not only educate students in the classroom, but also to help them become better rounded individuals. Im proud to be part of QRC community. In all my stay in QRC played an important part in shaping me into the person that I am now. I discovered that perseverance, determination and hard work yield sweet fruits. Professionally, I excelled in all my subsequent undergraduate, postgraduate, and professional academic trainings as an attorney and a counselor; trainings that cut across continents from England to the United States. I breezed through because of my strong QRC foundation. I currently own a law practice in the Houston, Texas and Im also engaged in health business. Personally, I learnt to be a nurturing person to all around me especially my family. Im really grateful for being part of QRC Alumnae Association, which enables me to reconnect with my old school mates. Its priceless and golden. My sincere gratitude goes first to God for creating me, then my parents for having me as their child. To all QRC students and staff that impacted me positively, I say Thank You! Merci Beaucoup! It I have lots of memories from my QRC days. The one that actually stood out to me was being suspended from the hostel by our principal, Mother Eucharia Anyaegbunam, for not performing my duties as the house refectorian. I was in charge of St. Kizitto House. Although I felt like it was a very harsh decision then but it actually taught me a good lesson; not to take things for granted. I will honestly say that I am who I am today because of my well grounded basic Christian and disciplinary experiences from QRC. To write about my QRC experience during the years I spent there is guaranteed to fill up a thousand pages and I do not believe I have that privilege! So I will cut it short and stick to certain memories that have lingered on, even after 30 long years!!! Yes, if you go to Q archives, class of 1984, you will not find Theresa Ify Omeludike! What you will find there is Ifeyinwa Theresa Amobi. Thats me! The tom boy girl that good old Mother Eucharia smartly tamed by making her the Deputy Senior Prefect of QRC in order to make her a lot more responsible!. The Artful Dodger (According to Mother Eucharia) that always knew how to Mia kazu in such a way that you will never catch her in trouble without her getting out of it!!! Thats me! Good old Mother of blessed memory Im sure, would never have forgotten me in a heartbeat!!! She would even have remembered my response when she asked if I ever thought of being a Rev Sister. What did I say? Mother I know I dont have the calling because I would have heard it!!! Poor dear Mother had a handful with me! Our days began with early morning Mass (how dare you get there after Mother!) during which time you would be at the Chapel (I hope its still there) and listen to the holy sisters and postulants sing in such angelic voices that you would actually believe you were in heaven. Then breakfast is next and our morning assembly followed. Just be late and you will kneel down for the entire assembly time! How can I ever forget our Sunday Mass as we lined up and walked by the road all the way to CKC to attend Mass in our crisply ironed red uniform, cap and long sleeve shirts with the white belt (you will be sorry for yourself if you dressed incomplete!). That was also the time of Rev Fr. Tagbo who was the Principal of CKC!. Another tough nut to crack!!! In fact he and Mother were so tough and strict and got along so well hat we silly kids used to whisper that they would make a great husband and wife together!!! My time as a Senior Prefect of QRC was the year the entire students decided to go nuclear!!! Guess who Mother made to pay for it? We, the Prefects! In fact, we were suspended by dear old mother because we allowed the students to get out of control!
We had names for virtually every teacher, and I will never forget our Math Teacher whom we nicknamed Ike Bons because of the pointed shape of his buttocks!!! Looking back, though, I am very thankful for how my QRC experience has helped shaped my life. Not only do I remain a staunch catholic that still attends morning mass when I can, virtually every aspect of my life has been influenced by this experience! As a Mother of 4, I never stop inculcating the virtues I learned from Q in my kids; my role as a wife is still based on the old submissive ways, as a Licensed Texas Attorney, I am forced to pick and choose my cases because I can never undermine my values or credibility all in the quest of money or power!!! The fear of God is still very strong in my life! In my own little way, I am contributing to make our world a better place! THANK GOD FOR QRC ONITSHA!!! VIAM VERITATIS ELEGI!! My high school years have been the most memorable. I remember that we used to have math lessons almost everyday in my final year. Of course, no one liked the subject for the fact that the teacher at that time was an old man, who normally wobbles as he speaks and a kind of a clown. This throws us off and makes us less interested in his class. At times he will come in the class singing old folk songs. People like us that are ooos will throw our hats up and the rest will be history.... Oh yes we really took advantage of him and we called him daddy. No one cared so much about this important subject, we would come to the class as usual talking and ignoring him. I am sure he saw us as a bunch of ignorant and irresponsible students. Sometimes he got so angry that he would make us to write stupid essays about why we are talking and so on! Oh! and when he turn around to write something on the blackboard, we would throw around pens, pencils or even papers at him. Then we found it funny, now I know better. Even though I enjoyed the class, sometimes, I would be one of the first ones to be asked to go outside of the classroom and stand at the corner for class disruption. Sometimes I would argued with Daddy to get back into class. But I realized that what was happening outside the class was much more exciting,
because we would not have the teacher bothering us anymore! The only problem would be when Mr. Ifeonu, another old math teacher would walk around the building looking for people like us to punish more. We usually hide behind the school building or just walk around the field instead of being in that miserable class, or so we thought. Wooow!!! when I look back now, I always asked myself what the hell was I thinking?

First, there was mom and dad; grandma; uncles and aunties and cousins far and near and friends, thank God for them all. And then came QRC with memories mixed; both sweet and bitter, and of course more friends. It is common knowledge that what could not be taught at home or school, life will teach and have I learned from the school called life? Of all my thirty somewhat years of school Q remains the most memorable and outstanding because it happened to me at the most challenging time of my formative years. Away from the protective eyes and hands of my parents, Q took me from a frail, careless, clueless 11 year old; molded, kneaded and carved me and thrust me into the world at 16; a scared
little David with so much confidence to face a Goliath world. Yes, I was blissfully ignorant and life has thought me so much since then and I am still learning. But I wouldnt trade my journey for anything in the world and I still thank my lucky stars for my Q experience. That is why I strongly believe I have to give back. As you read this, some of you who had the good or ill fortune to know me during my QRC days might wonder how I ever made it to this stage. I can sum it up in one verse: When at the slippery parts of youth, With heedless steps I ran, Thine arms unseen, conveyed me safe And led me up to man. Thank you Lord for mom and dad and, QRC too! My QRC experience was invaluable and remarkable. I cannot believe that it has been forty years since Q days and that we are now mothers and grandmothers. It seems like just yesterday that we were proudly adorned in our red and white pinafore uniform as we matched along Okosi Road to the Stadium. Those were fun days. In addition to the solid foundation and values I received from QRC upon which I have built my life, I made lifetime friendships and camaraderie that compare to nothing I have done since then. I am so proud of this school which gave us the foundation of excellence as a result of which many of us were able to thrive in different aspects of our lives. My hope is that the current students who have received the batons from us will not hold what they have loosely. Despite the decadence which resulted from the governments mismanagement and poor administration, it gladdens my heart that the school is being resurrected by the remarkable efforts of Sister Chijioke, our current principal. I cannot wait to see this school returned to its original glory. I applaud the efforts of all that are working towards this goal including the principal, the alumnae factions and many Q friends. May God Almighty continue to uphold us and give us the fortitude never to forget where we started from. Joan Uju Nwuli Esq. (Nee Emodi) Class of 1974 Houston, Texas

UMU Q, KEEP SHATTERING THE GLASS CEILING QRC Students win 1st & 2nd Place Awards in a National Literary
Competition in honor of Prof. Wole Soyinkas 80th Birthday
East is East West is West And never shall the twain meet But they shall and can meet If we are to be understanding After all, we are of same emotions and feelings. Its a token of gratitude Like a gentle breeze from altitude It can be felt in the water It can be smelt in the air It can be felt in the earth My gratitude indeed, is a tiding of wreath It was just a story that has become history History has become legend Legend has become myth Full of poise, consisting of good conduct A wizard is never late Nor is he early He arrives precisely When he means to. I have awakened To a new world And I want to be Part of that world The world of the united twain Of peace and love The egalitarian world Of Soyinka. Thank you for this great chance A golden opportunity For reunion Permit me to tell you The meaning of your name: WOLE SOYINKA
WOLE: W Wealth O Of L Love E Emblem SOYINKA S Solidarity O Of Y Youth I Idealistic N Negotiator K Kindle A Affable In the organisation of the acronym of your name, I say that you are the Wealth Of Love Emblem, the Solidarity Of Youth, Idealistic Negotiator, ever Kindle and Affable.
Thank you and once again Happy Birthday.

HARDWORK by Olowookere Chinyere
Dear hardwork I use to run away from you When I knew you were coming I hide away from you When you influence others to talk to me I quickly gave excuses to get away from you. Afraid of the pain I didnt want to get hurt Afraid of the shame I didnt even try Afraid of your name And what you have done to others Making me so afraid of you Who do you think you are? Reflection in the mirror Shadow behind me I take a step forward And still you are ahead of me. You turn the poor to rich F to As Is there nothing you cant do? Now look at me You made me what I am And now I have that Not giving up attitude. Quitting? It is not in my vocabulary When they say, I cant do it And they take me out I show them that I can When I tell them about my dream And they laugh at me I make sure I laugh last. I am a dream chaser That means I chase my dreams and No one else.
It is me against the work You have put on me I will not give up I have come this far I am not a loser I will not lose. O hardwork Father was right about you You do pay off And because of that I love you. I am no longer afraid of you I am waiting for you Infact where are you Because in hardwork I trust.

I Thank God I attended QRC Onitsha. My set,1974 set was one of the remarkable Sets. Why? We started immediately after the Nigeria /Biafra war in 1970, We
started in the war torn Onitsha that was a war front. God was with us. Our teachers, despite all odds, molded us into the women that most of us turned out to be today
It was fun, growing up those good all days. God bless and keep our Alma mater.
