About this Booklet

This booklet was created to help you prepare for Convention 2016. It includes helpful travel tips and event details to ensure a memorable experience in St. Louis. Additional Convention information is available by visiting www.thetaphialpha.org and clicking the Convention 2016 link.

This summer Theta Phi Alpha takes you to St. Louis, Missouri to celebrate sisterhood at our 51st National Convention with accommodations at the Hilton St. Louis Frontenac. Convention is five days of fun, education, and strengthened friends. This will be an occasion where you can really learn from your sisters, share information with each other, and establish friendships that will take your Theta Phi Alpha experience far beyond what you may have encountered at the chapter level. We encourage you to get involved and make the most of it.

National Convention Theta Phi Alpha's 51st National Convention will be held July 13-17, 2016, at the Hilton St. Louis Frontenac in Frontenac, Missouri. All Theta Phi Alpha sisters are invited and encouraged to attend National Convention. The National Convention is the supreme governing body of Theta Phi Alpha. Business sessions are held during Convention to review and to act upon matters brought to the Convention body by the Grand Council, as well as by any chapter, association, or individual member. The voting members of the Convention body include each eligible chapter and alumnae association, the Past National Presidents, and the members of the Grand Council. The business agenda will include voting on proposed changes to the National Constitution and Bylaws and the election of certain national officers. In addition to business sessions, National Convention includes a variety of traditional events including guest speakers, the Siena Medal Presentation, the Theta Phi Alpha Foundation Breakfast at which scholarships are presented to deserving sisters, Celebrating Sisterhood Dinner, Ever Loyal, Ever Lasting Dinner, and the Fraternity Night Banquet. This convention will also include a philanthropy project, a hypnotist, and a fun night of BONCO!

Convention Information

Time Zone St. Louis, Missouri is in the Central Time Zone.

Convention Dates and Times Chapter/Colony delegates and alternate delegates must arrive at the Hilton St. Louis Frontenac on Wednesday, July 13, 2016. The Session for New Convention Attendees begins at 4:00 PM on Wednesday, July 13, 2016, and is followed by the Convention Welcome Session for all attendees beginning at 5:45 PM.

Convention will end at 8:00 AM on Sunday, July 17, 2016.

Travelling by Car? Please use Google Maps, a smart phone app, or a GPS to determine the best route to the Hotel from your starting point.

Travelling by Air? Please complete the 2016 National Convention Travel Form at https://thetaphialpha.celect.org/site/forms/12076 so that we can ensure that ample shuttle space is available for arriving and departing passengers.

Shuttle from Lambert-St. Louis International (STL) Airport to Convention Hotel Transportation is being provided by the Convention Hotel at no charge. If you are flying into St. Louis Airport, please go to Ground Transportation at your Terminal. There are 3 Hilton hotels in the area. PLEASE BE SURE TO GET ON THE HOTEL SHUTTLE FOR THE HILTON ST. LOUIS FRONTENAC. The hotel shuttles run every hour on the hour and circle from the airport to the hotel. You may also use the courtesy phone located at ground transportation if you do not see the shuttle arrive. The trip will take 15-20 minutes depending on the traffic in the area.

If you choose to take a taxi, please be aware that some taxis accept credit cards, but many do not. You may want to bring cash for this expense. Remember that sharing a taxi with other sisters will be less expensive.

Hotel Shuttle to Lambert-St. Louis International (STL) Airport on Sunday Airport transportation is being provided by the Convention Hotel at no charge. The hotel shuttle will be available for Theta Phi Alpha sisters who are returning to the airport when Convention is over.

Convention Activities – Friday Breakfast - Memorial Service Ceremony Business Session Siena Medal Luncheon - Recipient: Terry Grahl, Enchanted Makeovers Named for Theta Phi Alpha’s patroness, St. Catherine of Siena, the award was first presented at the Silver Jubilee Convention in 1937. The life of St. Catherine of Siena is an example of triumph in a time of obstacles and adversity for women. The Siena Medal is presented to a woman who sets an example of encouragement for perseverance and high goals. The Siena Medal is a round gold medallion bearing the coat-of-arms of Theta Phi Alpha and inscribed in Greek with the Theta Phi Alpha motto “Nothing great is ever achieved without much enduring.” Theta Phi Alpha is honored to award the 2016 Siena Medal to Terry Grahl. Father Dominic Duggins from Glenmary Home Missioners joins us to talk about Theta Phi Alpha’s longtime support. Business Session Compass Club Luncheon - For sisters who have attended five or more conventions Lunch On Your Own - All other Convention attendees Business Session Mass Father Dominic Duggins of Glenmary Home Missioners will celebrate a Catholic Mass for those who wish to attend. Convention Photograph Fraternity Night Banquet At Fraternity Night Banquet, we take time to celebrate Theta Phi Alpha’s achievements and look to the future. Other Convention Activities Theta Phi Alpha Archives Display Make sure to visit the most comprehensive exhibit of Theta Phi Alpha history. Featured treasures include the badges of two of our Founders, scrapbooks of Founder Eva Stroh Bauer Everson, and the original Constitution, hand-written by Founder Amelia McSweeney Convention Choir Learn some new Theta Phi Alpha songs or sing along to tunes you already know as a member of the official Convention Choir. These groups of Theta Phi Alpha friends, old and new, always have a great time! The Penguin Shoppe Open daily for your shopping convenience during your stay in St. Louis! The Penguin Shoppe will sell Theta Phi Alpha merchandise at various times throughout the Convention. The Penguin Shoppe stocks everything from trendy v-necks to classic stitch letters, embroidered items to spirit Jerseys. There are several new items for you to check out during your stay, so don’t forget to stop by! It’s not too early to prepare for your Recruitment, Bid Day, and Big Sister/Little Sister events! See the displays in the Penguin Shoppe and ask for assistance in working within your chapter’s budget. Quantity discounts are available. Convention Philanthropy This year’s convention philanthropy is Capes for Kids. Siena Medalist Terry Grahl inspires hope and belief in all of her work with Enchanted Makeovers. The same holds true with Capes for Kids, in which homeless children are called to be their own superhero! Help inspire children by creating your very own cape to donate to our Siena Medalist during the Philanthropy session. Parade of Prizes The Parade of Prizes will be held throughout the Convention. A raffle where you choose what prize you want to win! Prize items include gift baskets, jewelry, gift certificates, baskets of regional merchandise, Theta Phi Alpha items, cosmetics, or other gift items that you would want to win! Items donated to be raffled can be brought to the Convention Registration Table. Raffle tickets will be sold throughout the Convention for $1 each (6 for $5). All proceeds support the Theta Phi Alpha Foundation. Silent Auction Theta Phi Alpha Foundation Silent Auction will take place throughout Convention, concluding during our evening activities on Saturday, July 16, 2016! Look for a variety of specialty gift items and place your bid! White Rose Garden Let a sister know how much she means to you by honoring her as part of the Convention White Rose Garden. The Theta Phi Alpha Foundation offers white rose appliqués that sisters can proudly display on their convention name badges. A great way to honor chapter sisters, friends, helpful alumnae, and national officers! White roses will be sold throughout the Convention for $5 each (6 for $25). Sisterhood Society – Collegian Giving Program The Sisterhood Society is a special program created expressly for collegiate women who support the Theta Phi Alpha Foundation. When you donate an individual gift of $19.12 or more, you become a contributor to the educational and philanthropic work of the Foundation. The Foundation will send you a dangle to wear with pride with your membership badge and you will be recognized in The Compass, Theta Phi Alpha’s magazine, as well as in the Theta Phi Alpha Foundation’s Annual Report. For each renewal in subsequent years, you will receive an additional dangle of a different design, to indicate your years of membership in the Sisterhood Society . Roll Call Part of the Founders’ Day Ceremony involves the Theta Phi Alpha Foundation Roll Call - this special roll call recognizes each sister by the year that she was initiated. Sisters are asked at this time to make a donation to the Theta Phi Alpha Foundation. At National Convention, we ask that you generously support the efforts of the Foundation and donate during the Fraternity Night Roll Call. During Fraternity Night, each chapter of Theta Phi Alpha is called up to present her gifts to the Foundation. We ask that each sister donate a minimum of one dollar for each year since her initiation into Theta Phi Alpha. Please note that checks written directly to the Foundation are tax deductible to the extent provided by law. All money collected through the fund raising efforts of the Theta Phi Alpha Foundation during Convention are used to support the Foundation’s mission of enriching Theta Phi Alpha sisters by providing resources for scholarship, philanthropy, and education through charitable giving. Proceeds from these efforts will provide scholarships to Theta Phi Alpha sisters, fund educational speakers and programs, leadership development, and help fulfill our commitment to our national philanthropies.

Convention Attire What Should I Wear During Convention? Convention business sessions, workshops, meals, and presentations require Badge Attire. Badge Attire is suitable attire that is appropriate in a professional office setting. Dresses, nice skirts, or slacks are appropriate for most Convention activities. You will spend a lot of time in air conditioned hotel meeting rooms, so be sure to bring a light jacket or sweater. Wednesday, July 13th Show your pride by arriving in your Theta Phi letters! What Should I Pack for Convention? ¨ Theta Phi Alpha Badge (carry on - do not check with luggage) ¨ Attire

- Travel Days - Please arrive and depart in jerseys or letter shirts, so you can meet other sisters at the airport. - Three Outfits for Business Meetings/ Meals and Other Programming (unless otherwise noted) A business

dress, suit, pantsuit, or skirt and blouse. Suits with shorts are not allowed. Bring an additional sweater or wrap since meeting room temperatures vary. See Convention Attire pages (11-13) for additional details.

Terry Grahl, 2016 Siena Medal Recipient Terry Grahl, the founder and CEO of Enchanted Makeovers, is the 2016 recipient of Theta Phi Alpha’s Siena Medal. Terry’s vision behind her all-volunteer non-profit organization began in 2007 with a mission to transform homeless shelters for women and children into places that inspire behavioral and psychological change. In addition, Terry’s mentoring programs such as the Sacred Sewing Room, Stepping into the Dream, and Capes for Kids develop important life and coping skills. The improvements resulting from Terry’s dedication to Enchanted Makeovers provide much more to the homeless community than the beautiful spaces she and her team leave behind. More importantly, her makeovers offer feelings of stability, community connection, self-worth and love through the hand-made materials, creativity and talent of the entire volunteer team.

Mari Ann Callais, Ph.D., Past National President, Theta Phi Alpha In this dynamic keynote, Dr. Mari Ann Callais will challenge women to stand up and be more respected by men, campus administrators, professors, their roommates, their friends, and themselves. By leaning in, women can take hold of their experiences and make a difference in the lives around them. Mari Ann holds an undergraduate degree in Political Science (Loyola University New Orleans), a Master’s degree in Education Administration (Our Lady of Holy Cross College), and a Doctorate in Educational Leadership and Research (Louisiana State University) where she wrote her dissertation on Sorority Rituals and Behavior. She has received numerous awards, including the Fraternity Communications Association’s Varner Award, the National Diversity Council’s 2011 Most Influential and Powerful Women in Louisiana award, and the highest award that Theta Phi Alpha bestows on a member, the Guard of Honor.

Eileen Cronin, Author, Mermaid – a Memoir of Resilience Through poetry and short story writing, Eileen found her voice. At twenty-six she published a cover story for the Sunday Outlook section of the Washington Post. The story was sold to papers around the country and Eileen was faced with what might have become instant celebrity as a “thalidomide baby.” She found that a patronizing role. Aside from that, she lacked proof of the involvement of thalidomide in her background. Her mother denied having taken such a pill. This was a critical point in Eileen’s life. As a young newlywed, she worried that her differences were caused by a mutation. Thus began a new chapter in her life as the researcher of her own medical history, which fostered her enthusiasm for a career as a clinical psychologist. Her debut memoir Mermaid, chronicles Cronin’s struggles through “the eyes of a mermaid.”
