Principal’s Message

Message from Your Principal

It is with great pride that I welcome you to Pioneer Valley High School. We are home to over 2600 students in grades nine through twelve and nearly 200 staff members who are dedicated to providing the best education possible by offering high quality academic and extra‐curricular programs. High school is an exciting time, and we want all students to make positive choices and have meaningful experiences. We encourage everyone to focus on academics and get involved in activities such as athletics, the visual and performing arts, and clubs and organizations. As Pioneer Valley enters its ninth academic year of education, we continually ask for partnership from students, parents and community members. We all know that student success comes from working together, and the Pioneer Valley Panthers invite you to be a part of our team. We are very proud of our new website. With a wealth of information about programs, events and opportunities at PVHS, it is updated daily and will be the primary method of communication. Please visit the site at www.pvhspanthers.org. I know everyone is excited about the 2012‐2013 school year, and I look forward to sharing it with you. It is my hope that the students of Pioneer Valley always represent themselves well, at school and in the community. TO ATTEND PIONEER VALLEY HIGH SCHOOL Students must reside within the following boundaries:

TO ENROLL AT PIONEER VALLEY HIGH SCHOOL Student must reside in PVHS attendance area. Parents must complete an enrollment packet consisting of the following forms:

Students returning from Alternative Education Programs must have prior approval from the AEP Committee. Any previous fines or charges encumbered in the District must be cleared (or payment arrangements made) before registration is completed. Students will receive their schedule from a Guidance Technician and information regarding school rules, textbooks and ID picture.

INTRADISTRICT LOTTERY PROCEDURE The superintendent or designee shall identify those schools which may have space available for additional students in the new school year. No pupil who currently resides in the attendance area of a school shall be displaced by pupils transferring from outside the attendance area. When the number of requests for Open Enrollment and Intra District Transfers exceeds the number of spaces available in any of the district’s schools, the student’s name will be placed on a lottery list for the year the student applied for the transfer. When it is necessary to have a lottery, the lottery will be conducted by July 1st and a waiting list will be established for spaces that may become available at that school. The waiting list will be in the order of the lottery drawing. The superintendent or designee shall inform applicants on the waiting list, by mail, as to whether their application has been approved. Applicants who receive approval must confirm their enrollment within one week. Refer to Education Code 35160.5 (b)

Attendance Information

Modified Block Schedule (MBS) This schedule requires that all students take three, 90‐minute classes. They are also strongly encouraged to take one additional 50‐minute class, during blocks “A” or “Z”. All students will be enrolled in a 20‐minute “Panther Forum” class with a teacher advisor.

The MBS provides many benefits, some of which are: Fewer students are in each class, with no class

having more than 30 (except PE classes). Students may focus on more rigorous classes. Expanded noontime intramural and club activities. Teachers have fewer student contacts each day,

resulting in greater personalization between students and their teachers. (Teachers are better able to provide additional assistance, if needed.)

Students are able to learn the subject matter in greater depth. (Students concentrate on three courses at a time, and spend more time each day studying them in greater detail.)

Students carry textbooks for only 3 classes

Tardies

Being on time to class is expected. The amount of time provided between classes is more than adequate for all students to arrive on time. Students arriving to class after the bell rings will be considered “TARDY.” Initially, each teacher will deal with tardiness to class. Students will face disciplinary action as outlined below if tardies continue.

Traffic around PVHS in the morning and after school can be a challenge as it is at all schools. Parents who drive their student to school need to be aware of PVHS start time and plan accordingly so their child does not arrive tardy to school. Tardies due to traffic will not be excused.

Leaving Campus During the School Day

Parents / guardians who need to take their student out of school during the day must be prepared to show identification at the Attendance Office. Only those persons listed on the student’s medical emergency information will be allowed to take the student from school. The school appreciates every effort made by parents to schedule appointments outside of the school day.

Student Drop‐Off / Pick up

In an effort to facilitate student drop‐off and pick‐up, PVHS has implemented the following program to move traffic and ensure our students are provided the safest environment when arriving and departing the school premises. The northeast maintenance and staff entrances are not available for student drop offs. “Staff Only” signs are posted and these lots are monitored between the hours of 7:00‐9:00 AM and 1:00‐3:00 PM. The student drop‐off and pick‐up area will be the football and pool area main entrance. Please enter on the north end and exit on the south end of this parking lot. This area will be marked with two lanes “One Way” to ensure the safest and quickest way to drop off and pick up your student. Please be patient and use the areas marked for drop off as indicated on the map below. Pioneer Valley High School Staff works collaboratively with the Santa Maria Police Department. All traffic violations may be cited. To avoid a ticket:

Enter the stadium parking lot through the main entrance. When exiting onto Panther Drive from the stadium parking lot you may only turn right going toward Main Street Do not make a “U” turn to go north on Panther Drive Do not drop your child off on Panther Drive Do not make a “U” turn at the North Staff Only Entrance

Following this system will get you in and out of the school using the quickest possible routes to ensure your child’s safety.

Seniors receiving an academic excellence cord have maintained a cumulative grade point average of 3.8 for four years.

ACADEMIC SCHOLAR / Light Blue Stole

Students achieving an academic grade point average of 3.5 or higher from the beginning of the ninth grade year to the end of

the second term of their senior year; earning 230 or more credits and completion of the University of California A‐G

requirements for college admission (Begins with Class of 2011)

ADVANCEMENT VIA INDIVIDUAL DETERMINATION / White, Teal & Black cord

Students receiving cords have participated in AVID for a minimum of two years including junior and senior years of high school,

have earned a total weighted GPA of 3.0 or higher, completed a minimum of 25 hours of community service, completed rigorous

course work (college prep and AP courses), have been involved in extra‐curricular activities and have earned acceptance into a

four‐year university.

These students are recognized as “completers” within the Agricultural Department.

CALIFORNIA SCHOLARSHIP FEDERATION & NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY / Gold cord

CSF Life Members, also called, “Seal‐bearers” are those students who have maintained CSF membership for four semesters from

the sophomore to senior year, with at least one membership being during the senior year. Membership is determined largely by

the students’ grades in rigorous, college‐prep, honors, and advanced placement classes. National Honor Society Students

recognizes students dedicated to character, scholarship, leadership and service.

FRENCH HONOR SOCIETY / Red & Blue cord

French Honor Society recognizes those students who have taken three or more years of French with an A‐average

and an overall GPA of 3.0 or better, and have joined and participated in the honor society.

Students awarded the Link Crew pin have served as Link Leaders for at least one school year. They facilitated the freshmen

orientation day and have participated in 90% of Link Crew events.

Active participants earned a minimum of 5 As and a B in Geometry, Algebra 2 or higher math.

SOCIEDAD HONORARIA HISPÁNICA / Red‐Orange & Yellow cord

Members have taken three years of high school Spanish classes and maintained a 3.75 grade point average in those classes.

STUDENT COUNCIL / Teal & Black cord

This cord is awarded to Student Council members that have maintained at least a 3.5 GPA, served in the Student Council

for at least 3 years with no major discipline history and maintained all As in Student Council.

VISUAL & PERFORMING ARTS CREATIVE EXCELLENCE AWARD / Medal Visual & Performing Arts students who have completed eight terms of VPA courses with a “B” grade or better and who have

contributed to the VPA program throughout their high school career receive the VPA medal.

Student Activities

ASB Cards / Yearbooks The cost of the ASB Card is $20.00 for the 2012‐2013 school year with the purchase of a packet, and $25.00 by itself. The ASB card is valid for the current school year. With this card, your son/daughter will be able to attend all home athletic events FREE, and will receive a discount at away games. The first dance will be free with the purchase of an ASB card. For packet options, see the next page. ASB Cards and yearbooks can be paid for through the ASB Office. Dance Tickets Tickets for all dances can only be purchased at the ASB Business Office by 3:30 p.m. during the school week. Students should listen to the daily bulletin and visit the school website for deadline dates and times for specific dances. No tickets are sold at the door. Students must show their PVHS student ID card to purchase tickets and to enter the dance.

Eligibility for Extra‐Curricular Activities Students must maintain a 2.0 “C” grade point average to be eligible to participate in extra‐curricular activities. Eligibility is determined at each nine‐week grading period. Students who receive below a 2.0 “C” must wait nine‐weeks until they can regain their eligibility. Progress reports do not determine eligibility. For additional athletic information, call the Athletic Director at 922‐1305 ext. 5113. School Pictures For safety, all students are required to have a PVHS ID picture taken and have the card with them at all times. Student ID cards are used for textbooks, transportation, cafeteria, and entrance to school activities. Students may purchase school pictures at the time their ID card picture is taken.

If you owe, you don’t go. “No PVHS student shall be allowed to

purchase any PVHS event ticket or voucher from the ASB Office if a student has unpaid

charges or is not current on a payment plan.” SDM 1/24/06

Students are expected to carry their ID cards with

them at all times.

Any student suspected of being under the influence of alcohol can be administered

a breathalyzer test at any PVHS sponsored function.

PORTRAIT DRESS CODE

The Board of Trustees of the Santa Maria Joint Union High school District has approved the following dress code for senior portraits to be included in the yearbook. Not considered suitable for publication are, but not limited to, the following:

Sports & PE Information

Sports Fall Sports include Cross‐country, Football, Boys’ Water Polo, Girls’ Tennis, and Girls’ Volleyball and Girls’ Golf. Winter Sports include Boys’ Basketball, Girls’ Basketball, Boys’ Soccer, Boys’ Wrestling, Girls’ Water Polo, Girls’ Wrestling and Girls’ Soccer. Spring Sports include Baseball, Softball, Boys’ Volleyball, Swimming, Boys’ Tennis, Track & Field, & Boys’ Golf. If you are interested in participating in one or more of the following sports, contact the Athletic Director, at 922‐1305, ext. 5113.

Sports Physicals

Participation in High school sports requires a current athletic physical to be on file with our athletic trainer. See the athletic website to download an athletic sports packet that includes the proper physical forms to take to your doctor. Return all forms to the Athletic Trainer or Athletic Director for final review.

Athletic Eligibility Athletes must maintain a minimum 2.0 grade point average each grading term to be eligible.

Progress Reports do not determine eligibility.

Athletic Insurance Under state law, school districts are required to ensure that all members of school athletic teams have accidental injury insurance that covers medical and hospital expenses. This insurance requirement can be met by the school district offering insurance or other health benefits that cover medical and hospital expenses. Some pupils may qualify to enroll in no‐cost of low‐cost local, state or federally sponsored health insurance programs. Student Athletic Agreement / CIF Forms All athletes and their parent/guardian are required to sign the Athletic agreement, CIF concussion awareness and CIF Code of Conduct forms that are a part of the athletic sports packet. Return all forms to the Athletic Trainer or Athletic Director for final review.

PE Classes All students are required to complete twenty (20) units of physical education to graduate. All ninth grade students will be enrolled in physical education and will be required to participate in state‐mandated physical fitness testing during the spring. Students who are not enrolled in physical education for an entire year will maintain a fitness log with the assistance of their Panther Forum teacher. Fitness logs can be found in the student agenda. Logs will be checked monthly.

PVHS is not responsible for lost or stolen items left in the PE locker rooms.

Uniforms Uniforms are required for all students enrolled in Physical Education classes. Each student must have one shirt and one pair of shorts and/or sweatpants. (Any white socks and athletic shoes are acceptable.) Uniforms may be purchased by paying at the Business Office and showing your receipt to your PE teacher.

Lockers All students enrolled in PE class will be issued a PE locker. Lockers are to be used for PE uniforms only. Students are required to provide their own lock for their PE locker.

Only PVHS headgear may be worn on campus to help promote school spirit and safety. This

Support Services / Resources

AVID Program Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID) is a nationally recognized program to prepare students to meet the requirements for admission to 4‐year colleges and universities. Students take a rigorous college preparatory schedule, and are provided with academic instruction, tutoring and support services (college trips, SAT preparation, coping skills, career awareness, college application information, and financial aid). Students who are selected participate in AVID all four years of high school.

Booster Club

The Pioneer Valley Booster Club, comprised of parents and staff, was formed during the opening year of the school. The purpose of the Pioneer Valley High School Booster Club is to assist the school in promoting quality academic and athletic programs along with a broad range of campus activities and projects. Corporate and individual sponsorships are available. Meetings will be the second Monday of each month at 5:30 pm in room 508. Persons interested in more information should contact the school.

Cafeteria / Food Services We serve the National School Meal Program Express Lunch and Breakfast. PVHS uses a Point‐of‐Sale (POS) system that allows students to pre‐pay on their account and use their student ID cards to debit their account for breakfast or lunch. Students can purchase meals with their pre‐paid / credited account or with cash. An Express Breakfast can be purchased for $2.00 and an Express Lunch for $3.00. Express meals are the best “meal deals” on campus. Express Breakfast includes a choice of 14 entrees, two side dishes and milk. Express Lunch includes a choice of 15+ entrees, salad, fruit bar and milk. The fall menu is sent home along with the National School Meal Application. This application determines eligibility for meal program at no charge. Applications for free/reduced meals can be picked up in the cafeteria, the administration office or from the community liaison. If you have any questions regarding the Food Service Program, please call the school. Note: A National School Meal Application must be filled out each year to determine eligibility. Our POS system assures that no student may be overtly identified by the meal program in which they are participating.

College/Career Center

Our College/Career Center is hub for academic enrichment where the staff provide a variety of information and activities that prepare students to research career choices and various post‐secondary opportunities including admittance to universities. The PVHS counselor and guidance technicians help students enroll in College Prep classes, fill out applications and receive scholarships. Field trips to college campuses are provided. The center also emphasizes the importance of attendance as a key element to academic success. Work permit applications, job interview and preparation assistance are also available.

Community Liaison The Community Liaison works with all students and staff, acting as the liaison between administration, students, parents, and the community. Home visits are made by the Community Liaison regarding school policies, truancy intervention and the academic progress of students. The liaison also works closely with community agencies to provide medical and financial assistance to students and families in need. Bilingual services are provided.

English Language Advisory Committee (ELAC)

The English Language Advisory Committee (ELAC) is comprised of parents of Limited‐English Proficient (LEP) students. Any parent is welcome to become a member of the ELAC committee. The committee examines issues surrounding English Language Development, including the needs assessment for English Learner students. Persons who would like more information should contact Mrs. Prieto‐Chavez at 937‐6356, extension 1700.

Health Office The Health Office is open from 7:30 a.m. to 12:30 and from 1:00 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. Our registered nurse and health technician assist students who become ill or are injured during the school day. The personnel in the health office will contact parents of a student regarding any health issues, will oversee students who take prescription medication, and will coordinate care with other medical professionals and staff.

By law, all prescription and non‐prescription medication be left with the Health Technician. Students are to report to the Health Office to take prescribed doses. A form must be filled out by a physician and the parent/guardian before medication is taken. These forms may be obtained in the Health Office and must be updated once a year. The medication must be in the original labeled container and accompany the form to be stored and dispensed in the Health Office. Medication taken during the school day is given by the Health Technician, or other designated school personnel, under the supervision of the School Nurse. It is the student’s responsibility to come to the Health Office to take their medication. Some students may carry emergency medications (i.e., insulin,

glucagons, Epi‐pen and inhalers) with approval of the parents, physician and School Nurse. All medications must be taken home at the

end of the school year. Please direct any questions to the Health Technician.

What to do when a student is ill and needs to go home during the school day. Students must report to the Health Office when they need to go home because of illness. Students are not to contact their parents to pick them up before reporting to the Health Office. The student must obtain a hall pass from their teacher before they will be admitted to the Health Office. Contact will be made with the parent or guardian. When permission is obtained from the parent or guardian for the student to leave campus, a pass will be given to leave school. Students will need to go the Attendance Office for assistance if they need prompt attention and can’t go back to class when the health office is closed for lunch break.

The student will be allowed to leave ONLY with permission from the people listed on the student’s Emergency Card. It is imperative that you have an updated emergency card on file and you list a trusted relative or friend, in the event we are not able to reach you during a medical situation.

What if it’s necessary for a student to leave campus for a medical appointment? When it is necessary for a student to leave campus for medical or dental appointments, they must first check out through the Attendance Office. The parent or guardian may call the Attendance Office in advance for medical or dental appointments. Students may bring in notes from their parents.

What happens if a student is kept in the Health Office for a class period or more? If students need to be in the Health Office for any length of time, they will be put on an “excused absence list”, designating the number of periods to be excused. The original pass is returned to the teacher. Important note: At the end of every school day, a list of the students who have been in the Health Office, who left the campus for an appointment, or who have gone home ill, will be given to the Attendance Office. Parents do not need to call the Attendance Office to clear such absences.

What happens if a student has a doctor’s note not to participate in PE or has an injury that prevents normal mobility on the campus? If a student has a doctor’s note not to participate in PE or has an injury that requires access to an elevator or more time to reach classes, the student needs to bring the original doctor’s note to the Health Office staff. The Health Office will notify teachers and other PVHS staff who will need to be aware of the situation. A PVHS staff member may contact the doctor’s office for clarification of the injury or situation. Accident reports are also prepared in the Health Office.

All students in 10th grade, and students with Triennial IEP’s, will have a vision and hearing screening. If the student does not have vision insurance for follow up care, the school nurse may be able to help obtain vision care and glasses.

The CHC clinic on the Santa Maria High School campus is open to all students in our district. Siblings of our students, who are 12 and over, can also be seen. The clinic will accept Medi‐Cal, Healthy Families and private insurance, with no co‐pay charged. Free medical care will be provided for students who do not any insurance. For appointments call 614‐9716.

Language Testing Center

The Language Testing Center assesses a student’s English language proficiency according to State guidelines. The Center also provides registration and tutorial assistance.

Library

The Library is open daily from 7:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. The Library provides many services: a comprehensive library collection, research materials, textbooks, and ID cards.

Migrant Education

Migrant Education is a federally funded program created to supplement district programs for migrant students. A student is eligible for migrant education services when his/her parents are employed in seasonal occupations such as agriculture, timber, or fishing. Services received by migrant students include: district‐recognized independent study material for unit‐deficient students (PASS Program); academic counseling by the migrant advisor; health services, monthly parent meetings, scholarships, and excursions to academic institutions.

School Site Council

The School Site Council develops and evaluates our yearly learning goals as outlined in our School Plan. The School Site Council is made up of parents, students, and school personnel. Members of this council are elected by their peers and serve for a two‐year term. Elections for new members are held each year as one half of our members rotate off. Meetings are held monthly and are open to public.

Special Education

Special Education is available for qualified students whose needs cannot be met through the regular education program. If you have any questions, please call the Special Education Office.

Student Store The Student Store provides a valuable service to all students. Students can purchase school supplies, school spirit items, and food items. The Student Store is open at lunch and after school.

Title I Pioneer Valley High School is a schoolwide Title I program that provides services to all students. Students who have been identified as not being at the proficient level of state standardized tests are provided intervention programs such as CAHSEE prep, after‐school tutoring, and intervention courses in English and math. Our community Liaison provides medical, financial and academic support to students and families. Parent communication is provided in English and Spanish regarding school events.

Other Information

Change of Address/Telephone If your address, phone numbers, or other personal information changes over the course of the school year, it is very important to update your emergency card and other school records. Reports, announcements and reminders of meetings are often mailed home. In order for the school to keep parents/ guardians well informed, and to insure that contact can be made quickly if necessary, it is imperative that the Records Office be informed of any change of address, phone number and guardianship. Change of data forms are available at the Records Office.

Classroom Interruptions / No Deliveries

We are committed to preserving the integrity of the instructional process and classroom interruptions are considered a major disruption. We do not interrupt classes to call students out of classes for:

keys

lunch or lunch money (we do not accept any money for student delivery)

personal deliveries (flowers, balloons, PE clothes, class projects)

Messages from parents or guardians only will be limited to emergency messages only. Emergency requests will be directed to an administrator.

Daily Bulletin

Information about school activities, sports and club meetings will be communicated to students on a regular basis via the school PA and is also posted on the school’s website.

Lockers

There are no lockers available for general textbook use. Students are encouraged to carry a backpack for their materials. All students enrolled in PE class will be issued a PE locker. Lockers are to be used for PE uniforms only. Students are required to provide their own lock for their PE locker.

Visitor Policy

This policy is to ensure the safety of all students and staff at Pioneer Valley High School. Closed Campus Hours: 7:00 a.m. ~ 4:00 p.m. As per Board Policy (AR 6116 and BP 1250), only pre‐arranged visitors are allowed on campus between 7:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. Staff who are pre‐arranging for a visitor must notify reception and the principal’s secretary via e‐mail the day before the visit including the visitor’s name, purpose of visit, and expected arrival/departure times. All guest speakers will be escorted to and from the front office by the staff member or their designee. Lunchtime activities/assemblies are for current PVHS students. Parents and other visitors are not allowed at these closed events. Students are not permitted to bring visitors.
