Mike Gilger, President

From The Helm

Are we having fun yet? That’s the question I keep askingmyself everytime I’m on the water and one of thesecrazy afteroon storms kicks in.  I’m beginning to feel likethe “old man and the sea” character.I hope all of you have been paying attention to our list ofnominated Club Officers for 2015. Remember, all ofthese volunteer candidates still need to be elected intooffice. I mention this again only to remind you thatshould you decide you might also like to run for one ofthese offices, it’s not to late to toss your hat in the ring. Our elections will be during the November meeting soyou still have time. The easiest way to do this is to emailone of the members of my Nominating Committee (JoeUdwari - [email protected] or John Gettinger [email protected]) Tell them what position you’reinterested in and he’ll do the rest. It’s just that easy.We love having new faces on the Board. Each newperson brings their own thoughts and ideas to the tablewhich enables us to keep the Club running smoothlymaking it more fun for everyone..By the way, has anyone ever wondered how and whenwe got started as a Club in 1980? Our MembershipDirector, Donnie Brennan has the club’s history. Ask herfor a copy. I know she’d be happy sharing it. You cancontact her at [email protected] hope you’re all purchasing your Christmas party tickets. While we have moved the venue for our party to a largerfacility, we will still have a limit to contend with. In thePGICA, we were limited to 150 people (comfortableseating at tables); holding our party at the CharlotteHarbor Yacht club give us more room with a limit of 220– but considering that we have over 500 members, ifyou’re thinking of attending, you’ll still need to get yourtickets early or you’ll be out of luck.

We’re still looking for members’ input in our newsletter. If you have a good idea about fishing or how to maintainyour boat, why not write about it? Send it to our Editor,Karen at [email protected] and let her includeit. Spread the word! Remember, this is your newsletter.

While I’m talking about spreading the word, I’d like to say a“few words” of thanks to the Ladies of theKitchen…especially Ellen Wagner who always donates homemade cakes and cookies for our after-meeting refreshments.Without these wonderful women, you’d be going homehungry. So how about after our next meeting, as your stuffingyour mouth with a great tasting treat, say thank you to ourladies who give their time and effort to our Club?.Well, there’s another storm rolling in and I’d like to get offmy computer before it hits so I’m signing off now and gettingthis to Karen before the lightening gets any closer. Don’twant to risk a fried PC. Don’t mind fried KFC but a fried PC?Not interested!Go fish! Have fun! Stay safe!

Joe UdwariFishing Events

Fishing in Charlotte Harbor and adjoining waters continues tobe pretty darn good, and should continue into October.  Thecopious amounts of freshwater flowing into the Harbor due torecent rains may push the fish around a bit, but theprevalence of bait should keep them here.

Tarpon, redfish and snook were all feeding aggressively thismonth, taking live bait, cut bait and lures.  For example, between John Solinger and Kel Krotzer alone, they caught14 fish worth 2200 total points (4 tarpon, 7 redfish, and 3snook).  That's a lot of big points fish for just 2 anglers tocatch in one month.  In addition, spotted seatrout, Spanishmackerel, and bluefish are again being caught more regularly, and should continue to increase in size and numbers as wehead into cooler Fall temperatures.

Offshore has been good as well for red grouper and varioussnapper and reef fish when the wind and waves cooperatedenough to allow boats to get out.  Earlier in the month severalmembers were able to get out to a 125' depth and limited outon red grouper.  The re-revised in -season Federal closure forred grouper (which is now 12:01 am on October 5th) allows usone more day to get red grouper.  Of course, you'll still beable to keep them in State waters until December 3rd, ifthey're 20" or longer.

Our September Fish of the Month (FOM) contest was forsnook.  Twelve members submitted entries, and we had  3male and 3 female angler winners, as shown below.

Fish Of the MonthPlace Men Length Women Length

2nd Place

JohnSolinger 35.0"

DarleneMadsen 28.0"

3rdPlace

PamSolinger 27.0"

Our October FOMcontest is for redfish.

These fish are measured from the tip of the noseto the end of their pinched tail (total length), andremember to round off your measurement to thenearest half inch.  No guessing or estimatinglengths for these fish.

Redfish are beginning to school up and shouldbe even easier to target then when they'rescattered along the mangrove edges or flats. Just be sure to approach any schools slowly soas not to spook them, and have some bait handyto keep them near your boat when you do gettheir attention.  Also be considerate of any otherboats working such schools by keeping arespectable distance (several long cast lengths)and not getting in front of the school's directionof movement or other boats.  You can enter anylength redfish into the FOM contest, but makesure they're in the slot limit of 18" to 27" if youplan to keep them.  The daily limit in Statewaters is 1 legal fish per angler.

Always make sure and check the latestapplicable regulations in effect for where youare fishing and for what you are catching, especially if you plan to keep some fish.  Alsoremember that you can't use a paid guide forany contests except the Ladder of AnglingAchievement (LOA) Program, and your OctoberFOM entries are due no later than November  1.

First, second and third place winners received $35, $25 & $15gift certificates to Laishley Marine, Fishin' Frank's and RioVilla Bait & Tackle, respectively.

If you did catch a snook in September and didn't submitit in compliance with our rules, you may have missedout on a great prize.  So make sure that if you do catch afish of the month or any fish for that matter, attach apicture of you with the fish to an email identifying yourfull name, length and type of fish, date caught and anote if you used a paid guide, and send it [email protected].  It's that easy, and itenters your catch into all of the Club's programs andcontests as long as you satisfy each of the respectiverules for these events.  The rules can be found on theClub's great website at pgifishingclub.org.

While you're on the computer, please continue to postyour pictures on the Cub's Facebook page so we can allsee what's biting and where before hearing about it atour meetings.   Our Club's Facebook membership justkeeps on growing.

All contest results are nicely summarized later in thisNewsletter, and awards for September will be handedout at our next general meeting.

Come before 7 pm on October 14 to leave enough timeto pick up your raffle and 50/50 tickets, and to grab agood seat.  C U then!

Rick Sarkisian did an excellent jobdescribing his approach tocatching tarpon in CharlotteHarbor after last month's generalmeeting. A good number ofmembers, including MasterAnglers, stayed the extra half hourto hear Rick share his tactics andshow and tell presentation onrods, reels, fishing line andleaders, hooks, knots, lures andlive bait. His success in catchingtarpon and helping others catchtheirs has been phenomenal, causing some to dub him TarponTamer or Whisperer. Thanks forsharing Rick!

Capt. Robert Moore

Fishing Program ReportCapt. Robert Moore gave one of the best presentationswe have had all year, per some of the members. The fishof the month was Snook and all of us got some goodideas on how to catch  them . When fishing up againstthe mangroves keep in mind that when a Snook is hookedhe will try to go back into the mangroves. When a Redfishis hooked, they generally will go out. All Snook are bornmales and some change to females as they age. That iswhy they are protected. He uses 20# braid mainline and30-40# leader, three to four ft long. Snook do not like tofeed on a slack tide, so watch the tides. Look for an areain a canal or small bay where you see eddie currents. Also, most points in the mangroves hold fish.

Our next speaker onOctober 14th is Frank Hommena, president and owner of

Fishin’ Franks Bait  & Tackle and Fish Charters. He hasbeen in business here for over 29 years and will definitelyprovide an excellent presentation.

I’m going to begin a sub-article in my Sunshine column. Each month, I’m going to dedicate that sub-article tobirthdays and anniversaries. I’ll call the article:“Celebration”.So, beginning in January, if you’d like to see your nameor the name of your spouse or friend in print, just letme know the month they were born. I don’t need theirexact date or year (especially for the ladies…..you allknow how we feel about our ages…) but I do want themonth. My goal here is to spread sunshine and makeyou smile……..no, it is not, “Let me entertain you, letme make you smile”….you can entertain yourselves,I’m just going to try and make you smile. So, that said, I need to switch hats and get back toMembership. So, have a great day and remember, getme those birth months.

Happy fishing!

Donnie

Hi Everyone

First of all, I want to thank everyone who has sent in the2015 dues. I really appreciate getting it so early. It reallymake my life less complicated. I especially want to thankthose who followed the directions in myletter. You have no idea how that simplething unburdens the task of my record-keeping. So, thank you, thank you, thank you.

Our membership is coming along fantastically. We nowhave 282 families registered as members. Isn’t thatawesome? We surely must be doing something right.

Our summer months were a bit on the slow side butwe’ve made up for that. So without further ado, I’m goingto introduce you to our new members:

JOHN McFARLANDKEN & LINDA BAHRJOHN & RENEE BOTHWELLJOHN & MARTHA FERRISMIKE & HOPE PETKUSDAVE SUSSMAN & MARY ANN TIPTONDON & CONNIE WICKMAN

Remember, all of our new members have a star on theirbadges. Play nice! Go introduce yourselves and make afriend.

I’m going to cut this article really short this month since Ihave so many renewals to process. So take care on thewater, these storms are killers. Be safe. Have fun. Catchfish!

Donnie

Hi Folks!

September was a busy month foryour Sunshine Lady. Seems like thesky wasn’t the only thing that held afew dark clouds. Get well andspeedy recovery cards were sent to: Grata Hofmeister,Stan Rosen and Pat Crawley. Let’s hope our goodwishes and prayers worked for their improved health.

A sympathy card went out to Ellen and Aaron Wagneron the loss of Ellen’s brother.

While Rich Brennan had a small tumor taken out of hishand, I did’t send him a card. Mainly, because sincehe’smy husband and we live together, I wasn’t aboutthe waste the stamp so I just gave him a pat on theback and said, I Hope you feel better quickly because Ireally can’t push the lawnmower. He’s recovering atlight-speed.

1. The Gulf of Mexico Fishery Management Council re-vised their in-season closure date for red grouper due toanother update of stock assessments. As of this writing, the season in Federal waters will be closed from October5 through December 31, 2014. The gag grouper season iscurrently still open until their quota is met. Check theirregulations periodically at:http://www.gulfcouncil.org/fishing_regulations/RecreationalRegulations.pdf

2. Snook season in State and Federal waters is scheduledto close on December 1, 2014. You must have a $10 per-mit to harvest a snook if you're required to have a li-cense, and then can only harvest 1 snook per day perperson if the total length of the fish falls between 28"and 33". Periodically check FWC recreational fishing reg-ulations at: http://www.myfwc.com/fishing/saltwater/recreational/

3. The big but patchy plume of red tide off the northwestFlorida Coast continues to result in fish kills and low oxy-gen levels in deeper water. The latest FWC update re-ports concentrations range from background levels to

high concentrations, and the plume is not moving towardour area. For more information go to:http://myfwc.com/research/redtide/events/status/ state-wide/

4. Nominations from members for next year's Club Officerscan still be made if you are not in agreement with the Nom-inating Committee's recommendations, which are: VinnieMadsen-President; Jim Crawley-Vice President; Ron Baxter-Treasurer; and Randy Hall-Secretary. Elections will be heldat our November 11th meeting.

5. The PGIFC Board updated the Club's By-Laws to makeeditorial corrections and reflect changes adopted since thelast update a few years ago. Copies of the existing and pro-posed By-Laws were emailed to all members for their re-view. A vote by the membership to adopt the updates willbe called for at our next general meeting on October 14,2014.

6. There's still time to sign up for the Club's next fishingtournament. See the flier in this newsletter on page 7 formore information.

PUNTA GORDA ISLESNEIGHBORHOOD MARINE

WATCH...MAKING A DIFFERENCE!

Members of the Punta Gorda Isles Neighborhood Marine Watch (NMW) Group ofvolunteers, with the sanction of the Punta Gorda Police Department and the PGI CivicAssociation conduct a once a month, On-the-Water night surveillance patrol. (1)Each month members decide, from a spread of days, which date and time theychoose for their patrol. (2) Members use their own boats and are equipped with

Provided signage identifying their vessel as a NMW patrol boat. Patrol locations will coincide with the each members “homedock”.(3) Our patrols sit on each of the nine (9) inlets into our canal system. The dates and times for our patrols are confidential.(4) After a soft background check by the PGPD, each member is issued a personal I.D. card/number, a copy of the NMWGroup “On-The Water Conduct & Procedures”, and a map of all inlets to the PGI canal system. (5) I will personally “Crew”with all new members on their first patrol.

If you are interested in joining the PGI NMW group, and performing no more then 2-hours of your time each month to thisWorthwhile program, snowbird’s are welcome to join us during their stay in “Paradise”.)
