Significance of the First Ten Days of Dhul-Ḥijjah

1. AllāhShastakenoathoftennightsinSūratul-Fajr.AccordingtothemajorityofthecommentatorsoftheQur’ān,thenightsarethoseofthe(first)tendaysofDhul-Ḥijjah.

2. SayyidunāAbūHurayraht related thatRasūlullāhs said, ‘On no days is theworship ofAllāhmorebelovedtoHimthaninthe(first)tendaysofDhul-Ḥijjah.Thefastofeachofthesedaysisequaltothefastofawholeyear,andtheworshipofeachofthesenightsisequaltotheworshipofLaylatul-Qadr.’(At-Tirmidhī,IbnMājah)

3. The mother of the believers, Sayyidah Ḥafṣaht,reports that Rasūlullāh s used to fast the (first)ninedaysofDhul-Ḥijjah.(AbūDāwūd,An-Nasa’ī,Aḥmad)

4. Sayyidunā ‘Abdullah Ibn ‘Umar t related thatRasūlullāhs said, ‘No days are as weighty withAllāh and so liked by Him for good deeds thanthefirst ten days ofDhul-Ḥijjah. So on these daysincreasinglyread:

Subḥānallāh, wa lā ilāha illallāh, wallāhu Akbar, wal-ḥamdulillāh.

Pure is Allāh (from all imperfections); there is no deity but Allāh; Allāh is the Greatest and all praise is for Allāh. (Musnad ‘Abd ibn Ḥumayd, Shu‘abul-Īmān)

Note: Although it is better to recite the above-mentioned Adhkār in the order mentioned in theḤadīth,recitingthethirdkalimahwillalsosuffice.

Virtues of the Day of ‘Arafah (9th Dhul Ḥijjah)

1. SayyidunāAnasIbnMāliktsaid,‘ItwouldbesaidregardingthefirsttendaysofDhul-Hijjahthateveryday is equivalent to a thousand days, and the dayof‘Arafahisequivalenttotenthousanddaysi.e.invirtue.’(At-TarghībWat-Tarhīb)

2. Sayyidunā Ibn ‘Abbās reports that Rasūlullāh s said, ‘Indeed, this (i.e. the day of ‘Arafah) is sucha(special)day thatonewhocontrolshisears,eyesand tongue on this daywill be forgiven.’ (MusnadAḥmad)

3. SayyidunāAbūQatādahAl-Anṣārīt narrated thatRasūlullāhs was asked about the fast on the day

of‘Arafah.Hesaid,‘Itcompensatesforthe(minor)sinsofthepastandthecomingyear.’(Muslim,At-Tirmidhī,IbnMājah)

4. Sayyidah‘Ā’ishahMreportsthatRasūlullāhssaid,‘ThereisnodayinwhichAllāhsetsfreemoresoulsfromthefireofhellthanonthedayof‘Arafah.Andon that day (the Mercy of) Allāh draws near andbywayof exhibitingHisPride (for theḤujjāj)Heremarks to the angels, “What is thedesireof these(servantsofmine)?”’(Muslim)

5. SayyidunāṬalḥahtreportsthatRasūlullāhssaid,‘ApartfromthedayoftheBattleofBadrthereisnodayonwhichShayṭānisseentobemorehumiliated,morerejected,moredepressedandmoreinfuriated,thanonthedayof‘Arafah.Andthisisonlyduetohim observing the (abundant) mercy descending(upon theḤujjāj)andAllāh forgiving (their)majorsins.’(Al-Muwatta’–ImāmMālik)

Night of ‘Īdul-Aḍḥā

The nights of both ‘Īds are described in the Ḥadīthas amongst the great and sacred nights in the Islamiccalendar. To remain awake on the nights of ‘Īd andperform‘ibādahisasourceofgreatvirtueandreward.

said, ‘Whosoever stays awake andperforms ‘ibādah(worship) on the nights of the two ‘Īds, with hopefor reward(fromAllāhS),hisheartwillnotdieonthe day (i.e. at the time of death or on the Day ofQiyāmah)whenheartswilldie(i.e.willbeinanguishduetobeingvoidofĪmānorasaresultofsins).’(IbnMājah)

ImāmShāfi‘īv reports that itwouldbe said, ‘Indeeddu‘ā is acceptedonfivenights:Thenight of Jumu‘ah(i.e.Thursdaynight),thenightof‘Īdul-Aḍḥā,thenightof‘Īdul-Fiṭr,thefirstnightofRajabandthenightofthemiddle(15th)ofSha‘bān.’(Al-Umm,Shu‘abul-Īmān)1

Virtues of Uḍḥiyah (Qurbānī)

Rasūlullāhs said, ‘The son of Ādam does not carryoutonYawmun-Naḥr (10thDhul-Ḥijjah)adeedmorebeloved toAllāh than the animal sacrifice. It (i.e. thesacrificedanimal)shallcomeontheDayofJudgementwith its horns, hair, and hooves (to beweighed). ThesacrificeisacceptedbyAllāhbeforethebloodreachestheground.Therefore,sacrificewithanopenandhappyheart.’(At-Tirmidhī)2

واللAllāhu Akbar, Allāhu Akbar, lā ilāha illallāhu wallāhu Akbar, Allāhu Akbar, walil-lāhil ḥamd.

Allāh is the Greatest, Allāh is the Greatest. There is no deity besides Allāh and Allāh is the Greatest. Allāh is the Greatest and All Praise is for Allāh alone.

• It iswājib for every adultMuslim to recite thesetakbirātoftashrīqonceaftereveryfarḍṣalāhfromthe Fajr of 9th Dhul-Ḥijjah till the ‘Aṣr of 13thDhul-Ḥijjah(i.e.totalof23ṣalāh).Menwillrecitethemaudiblyandwomensoftly.

• The Takbīrāt of Tashrīq should be recitedimmediatelyafterconcludingthefarḍprayer.
