A mother who left her toddler in the care of a crche last Friday was horrifi ed to learn that he was found wandering alone across Balhambra Way a few hours later. Thanks to a young man who lives across the way, two-year old Mathan Pelser was spotted in time and res-cued before he could be run down on the busy main road.

Mathans mother, Caroline Pelser of Dec-can Road, said she was angry and confused after the incident.

The fi rst she knew about it was when two women visited her at home and told her what had happened.

I was absolutely horrifi ed, said Pelser. They told her the young man who

found Mathan had returned him to the crche.

I rushed over there and found the front gate still open and my son strapped in a pram. He was the only child strapped in a pram, said Pelser.

When she tackled the crche owner, the owner denied Mathan had been left unattended.

She said that he had been on the

premises the whole time and had not made it as far as the road, said Pelser.

An angry Pelser withdrew her children from the crche and has reported the matter to the police.

I can only imagine what could have happened. He could have been knocked down and killed. He is only two. He could have kidnapped or worse. We live in such dangerous times. I am so grateful to the young man who saved him and the ladies who told me, she added.

The owners of the crche could not be reached for comment.

Good Samaritan Carol Holby is devastated by the theft of pots, stove and a gas cylinder from her Woodlands home just days before preparing the weekly meal she cooks for the poor and homeless of her community

A shocked and shaken Carol Holby cried openly while describing how she felt when discovering the theft from her yard last week.

Holby, of Cedar Road in Woodlands is known as a community mother for her self-less acts of kindness. One of these is feeding the poor and homeless every Sunday outside her home; an act which saw her featured in a national FNB television advertisement pro-moting community building.

Her concern was that she would not be

able to prepare a hot meal last Sunday for those who have come to depend on it.

She and her Wheatfi eld Mission team began planning on making sandwiches when another Good Samaritan, known only as Rajesh, stepped in to fi x her old broken stove at no cost on Saturday

Our prayers were answered. I really want to thank him, said Holby.

When news spread of the rob-bery, friends from across the coun-

try sent small amounts of money to pur-chase what they might need.

The burglars stole a large 20kg rice pot, a four-plate gas stove and a large gas cyl-inder. The Wheatfi eld Mission has pleaded with anyone with information to please come forward so that their equipment can be recovered.

The municipality has announced that dog licences will no longer be needed. This was the fi nal word at the city councils executive committee meet-ing last week when it was announced that dog licencing would be scrapped in Msunduzi. Whether a person is religiously inclined or not, respect is an attribute that is, or should be, nur-tured from the time we are very young. We should be taught to respect each other and always respect others, even if different.

Religious and racial intoler-ance and persecution are the great-est forms of discrimination we face these days. Apartheid was a typical case of racial intolerance. The on-going crisis in the Mid-dle East is an example of religious

intolerance that is becoming all too common.

Around 2 000 years ago a young man was persecuted for his beliefs but being the humble per-son he was, he believed in turn-ing the other cheek and was even willing to die for his belief in the good. Two thousand years later many of his followers have them-selves become persecutors of peo-ple that have opposing or differ-ent views.

I think it is time teachers lived up to their noble pro-fession and put the needs of school children before anything else. We should not forget that their employer is the Department of Education not a trade union.

On the Department of Edu-cation sign outside Anton Lem-bede House it reads, dedicated

to service and performance beyond the call of duty. A far cry from the present state of education.

In Syria, I saw the true arro-gance and brutality of human beings. What I saw I cannot express.

Reality is more dreadful and shocking than anything the mind can understand and words can declare or manifest. How do I explain the inexplicable? Where do I start? Do I describe how the Syrian regime bombed homes, schools, places of wor-ship and other infrastructure? Do I describe the needs of the mil-lions of people (refugees and dis-placed people) in desperate need

of humanitarian assistance espe-cially on the borders of Turkey, Jordan and Lebanon or the rape of women and children that we rarely hear about?

The civil war in Syria cannot be allowed to continue to fester unabated.

The minuscule moments of reality that I witnessed on the ground in Syria and the injuries I suffered make me feel almost ashamed of the comforts I enjoy.

Corporal punishment in schools was banned in 2006. Now the Depart-ment of Social Development wants the Childrens Act to be amended giving children protec-tion in their homes as well. This means if you as a parent spank your child it will be deemed as a type of assault which means you arecontravening a law and you could be in trouble with the law. What would the repercussions be of such a law? We would end up with a generation of ruthless and lazy children who would fear nothing because they will be fully aware that there are no reprisals

for bad behaviour. Some parents may argue that

when they were growing up they were spanked to be brought under control and to be disciplined. This is how they were taught to dis-criminate between right and-wrong. However an integral aspect of the spanking was that parents were in total control of themselves and needed to distinguish between punishing a child and brutalising a child. If parents are not in con-trol of their emotions then its easy to cross the line and that spank-ing becomesbrutality. A child also must be told why he or she is being spanked and whatbehaviour

is required in the future. How-ever this is only an argument and the above argument will soon be a violation of the law if the Chil-drens Act is amended.

Corporal punishment at home is banned in countries like Ger-many, Kenya, Poland, Sweden and Uruguay. If South Africa passes this law we will be joining these countries. The question that arises is are we ready for such drastic measures when our schools are experiencing so many discipline-problems?

In the Masukwana area numerous burglaries, robberies etc have been going on for sometime now but the victims in a majority of incidents do not report them to the Police.

On Tuesday night / Wednesday morn-ing our store Umgungundlovu Boards & Interiors was burgled and substantial stock and equipment were stolen. We reported to the police and within minutes of reporting the Loop Street police were on site and the forensic unit shortly afterwards. With fast, effi cient investigation the offenders were captured and the majority of our items were recovered in a day or two.

We must commend the speediness of detectives of Loop Street police in deal-ing with our matter. These detectives have proved themselves worthy and committed to their duty.

Brigadier Reinders, Captain Pillay, and the warrant offi cers and detectives work-ing with information gathered made a raid

and arrested some 10 offenders for crimes committed in numerous areas in Pieterma-ritzburg, including where we are in Mas-ukwana.

The Loop Street Police have shown true commitment, courage and heroic ways of enforcing the law to the best of their ability and made it their duty to capture offenders and bring them to justice.

We believe that all victims, residents, and shop owners that are subjected to crime should report these crimes to the police to bring these offenders to justice.

Lets not allow these criminals to get away with their crimes.

Well done to the effi ciency and fast work of the Loop Street police and detec-tives that brought these criminals to justice and recovered our goods in such a short space of time.

Residents living in Gladiola Road in Mountview were trapped in their houses when a nearby water-main burst, fl ooding the road on Sat-urday night.

Peru Naidoo, an elderly resident said that they were on their way to a family function when they realised the road had been fl ooded by rushing water.

The water was fl owing so fast and so high that we couldnt take our cars out of the driveway. My sick wife and I had to walk to the side of the road and wait for someone to fetch us from there, said Nai-doo.

He said that the pipes burst at around 6pm on Saturday evening and municipal workers who reported to the scene worked until the early hours of the morning trying to stop the overfl ow of clean water.

I believe it is the roots of the huge trees next to Ridgeview Primary School that have caused the pipe to burst. We really just want the municipality to remove these trees so that this doesnt happen again, said a frustrated Naidoo.

Ridgeview Primary School learners were sent home early on Monday as the school was left without water for the day. Municipal workers at the scene on Mon-day confi rmed that the large, old trees were actually the cause of the burst pipe.

Gogo Luthuli trying to help people rebuild

An appeal for help has gone out to the Pieter-maritzburg community following Sundays fi re in which over 100 shacks at the Jika Joe informal settlement were gutted by the fl ames, leaving more than 350 homeless.

Organisations providing assis-tance to residents at Jika Joe have appealed for help with shelter and donations of cash, food, blan-kets, shoes and clothes, including school uniforms for young learn-ers.

    Mama Ntombis Community

Projects (MNCP), the Red Cross and Gift of the Givers were among the fi rst the fi rst on the scene to provide urgently-needed relief

Despite the efforts of the organ-isations further assistance is needed, especially to relieve the plight of mothers with young chil-dren and babies.

If people in Pietermaritz-burg could just share a little of what they have it would relieve the plight of these poor, devas-tated people, said a spokesman for MNCP.

Selectors from the Drak-ensberg Boys Choir vis-ited numerous schools in Pietermaritzburg to audition for next years choir group. On Wednesday, the selectors visited Deccan Road Primary School.

We were very keen to broaden our outlook and reach into the Indian community and are pleased with the results. We have been to Orient Heights Primary School, Greenhill Primary School, Berg Street Primary School, Ath-lone Primary School, Pelham Pri-mary School, and Howick Primary School, said Geoffrey Thompson, English and Drama teacher at the Drakensberg Boys Choir School.

During the selection process, the selectors listen for those that have a singing voice and have choir potential.

It takes them months of train-ing to actually be ready to go into the choir. They go into a concert status training programme where they have to pass 25 tests in order to be ready. The 25th test being that they perform a solo in front of

the whole school, said Drakens-berg Choir School music teacher, Kathy-Jane Mintoor.

Those that have been chosen will be notifi ed once the selection process has been concluded.

Further auditions will be held in Durban. For information on attending the auditions or enroll-ing with the choir school, please contact Thomas Adams on 083 627 0185.

Prestbury residents are fed up with cattle that roam the streets of the leafy suburb. This happens on a nearly daily basis in Prestbury says irate resident Felicity Edwards after a

near collision with stray cattle on Friday night.

They are just walking around, unsupervised and no one is around to clean up after them or even control them, what happens in the event of an accident? Who is then held responsible? asked

    an upset Edwards.Another Prestbury resident

Chris Gilfi llan said that he had counted as many as 20 cows at a time. This has become extremely dangerous because they run on the road. This is a major inconven-ience because it causes major traf-

fi c congestion at times and is dan-gerous when driving in the area at night, said Gilfi llan.

Stray cattle grazing in Prest-bury and Blackridge, adjacent to the Vulindlela Tribal Trust com-munity of KwaMpumuza, have been a regular feature of the two

suburbs for many years, espe-cially when grazing over the hill is in short supply.

Who is responsible for stray livestock in Pietermaritzburg? The SPCA is contracted to the Msun-duzi Municipality to act as the offi cial Animal Pound. In effect the SPCA only has facilities to fulfi ll a role as a small animal pound, dealing with stray dogs, cats and pets. Large animal pound services are sub-contracted to a private Pound Master, Bruce Mat-tison of Howick who is also con-tracted by province as the Pound Master for the N3 freeway.

You can report stray livestock in Pietermaritzburg to Bruce Mat-thison at 082 908 4131.

For stray dogs, cats, pets and small animals you can contact the Msunduzi SPCA in Woodhouse Road, Scottsville, at 033 386 9267 during weekdays or after hours you can phone 033 3869267 to get the emergency number. Or you can e-mail [email protected]

Msunduzi SPCA manager Alistair Sinclair said, In accord-ance with the bylaws, the Msun-duzi/ Pietermaritzburg SPCA is a service provider for the Msunduzi Municipality. As such the SPCA functions as the offi cial small animal pound in an area which extends as far as Camperdown in the south, Hilton to the north and includes Richmond, Byrne Valley, Eston, Mid Illovo, New Hanover, Wartburg, Tayors Halt, Edendale and Sweetwaters.

Stray animals brought into the pound, unless extremely sick or severely injured, are kept for a period of 7 days to allow their owners to claim them. After this period, they are assessed accord-ing to their age, temperament and health at which point they will either be put up for adoption or humanely euthanased, he said.

The formation of the KZN Rugby Veterans Association in 2000 was a goal for which for-mer retired rugby players have worked, planned and sacrifi ced. Its aim is to put b ack into the sport all the joy and satisfac-tion that these players experienced in their heydays.

The president of this erstwhile body, Terence Hoskins, has a very energetic and capable band of ex-players behind him. In his role as leader, Hoskins established a rare pattern a combination of humility and dignity, courtesy and fairness, kind-ness and devotion to duty. It was due to the very signifi cant fi nancial injection of the Rugby Vets, that the Sports Veter-ans Association was able to ignite its own fund raising initiatives.

Among its duty and responsibility, the Rugby Vets facilitate and coordinate rugby tournaments and coaching clinics through-out KwaZulu-Natal, including the famous annual Friendship Games. This event attracts players and teams from the third and fourth divisions from all parts of the province.

The 2013 Friendship Games took place on Saturday 17 August at the Woodburn Rugby Stadium in Pietermaritzburg. This

years tournament attracted teams from Gauteng, Western Cape and the Free State. Notwithstanding the high standards dis-played by the players, this event was noted for the thorough and immaculate organi-sation. A truly colourful and gala atmos-phere prevailed on the day. A great debt of gratitude is attributed to the many spon-sors who support this tournament every year.

The Rugby Vets has secured the ser-vice of an overseas coach to assist with the rugby development programme and coaching in schools. Haythorne and East-wood Secondary, as well as Glenwood and Panorama Primary schools are the main benefi ciaries of this initiative.

The success of this organisation is due to the efforts of its members. Here, we pause to refl ect on the many achieve-ments of the departed rugby veterans such as Arthur Barnes, Joe Louw, Omar Majal and recently Graham Brown. These men helped make the glorious history of the KZN Rugby Veterans Association. Today we are reaping the rewards of their stead-fast loyalty to the principles of togeth-erness and for the many sacrifi ces they made. It is up to us who are here today to see that this great organisation for which they laid the foundation continues to be worthy of their wonderful achievement.

Meanwhile, the second Awards Pres-entation Function of the Sports Veterans Association will take place on Saturday, 22 March next year at the Truro Hall. All awardees have been selected and letters to this effect are being sent to each awardee. The SVA wishes to request that the con-fi rmation returns be dropped off at Allan-dale Primary School on either Saturday 21 September from 2pm to 4pm or Tues-day 24 September from 10am to 4pm. The purpose of this is to facilitate the taking of photographs for inclusion in the commem-orative brochure.
