Jeremiah accepts this and does Gods

will Jeremiah has two visions at first

He sees the branch of an almondtree (which is also called awatching tree)

This symbolizes that God iswatching to see if Judah andJerusalem will change

When King Josiah is killed during a battle with the Egyptians, the Egyptians choosehis son Jehoiakim to be king of Judah

Jehoiakim sides with the Egyptians against the king of Babylon Through Jeremiah God warns that Judah and Jerusalem will get the punishment

    their crimes deserve

When God tells Jeremiah to search the city, looking for an honest person he canfind no one The people have filled their houses with the goods taken from the poor and have grown

rich and have taken everything from the poor including crops They were oppressing foreigners

    Killing innocent people

    Worshipping idols etc.

The Judahites felt overly confident in believing that god would never let anythinghappen to Jerusalem, therefore, ignoring Jeremiahs message

Jeremiah warns the people that not even the temple assures Gods presenceunless they stop the crimes that they are doing

The people get frustrated with what Jeremiah tells them so they start a riot andcall for Jeremiahs death, Jeremiah gets away at the last minute and escapes alive

Jeremiah feels tricked by God does not want to live the rest of his life being persecuted He no longer wants to be a prophet

As soon as he says that and as soon as he tries to hold inGods message it builds up in his heart and he cannothold it in anymore

Just as fast as his mood and faith went down it comes rightback up and he lets out his famous cry ofdispair andcurses the day he was born

Babylon won the battle against Judah

Babylon attacks Jerusalem but does not destroy

it Jehoiakim is killed and his son, King Jehoiachin

is sent off to exile to Babylon in 597 B.C

This is the first exile for Judah

Jeremiahs message for the people is

Do not resist Babylon. Go willingly into

exile, and make the most of this sadsituation. It will be a time for something newto happen in you.

Jerusalem must go into exile otherwise it willbe destroyed

Jeremiah tells them to settle down there

    Build houses

    Plant gardens

    Have children

One day God will bring them home

Makes sure that they know that the Exile is notfor annihilation as they feared but exile so thatthey will purify themselves from their sins

Jeremiah will be accused fortreason For demoralizing the army

He said that they should surrenderinstead of fight for a king and a country

The nobles throw him into amuddy, deep, cistern to die

He doesnt die because he issaved by an Ethiopian courtier

In a dark moment like this, Godspeaks to him of great hope God promised that he will make a new

covenant with the people, writing thelaw on their hearts instead of on stonetablets

He will forgive their evil and

    remember their sin no more

as long as they remain in the ruined city and give into Babylonianrule

They flee to Egypt taking Jeremiah and his scribe Baruch withthem Few of them ever return to Jerusalem With that, Jeremiah disappears and no one knows what happens

to him One tradition says that he is murdered in Egypt by his fellow
