Projects funded with grants from the EU are not

suitable to solve immediate problems or challenges.

Proposals for collaborative projects funded with

grants from the EU will not be quick to put together.

They should be regarded as strategic activities.

Heres an example of what the process might be like:

    Subject: FP7 ideas

    Hi Jerry,

I'm starting to get sleepless nights thinking about partners

for a new project! I'm already accepting the idea of writing

something again (occupational hazard), but my fear is the

alacrity [willingness] with which you/NU would accept thechallenge of coordinating a large collaborative project (ca.

20 partners?) - same arrangement as SMARTWHEAT but

    twice as large. Hmmm.

Anyway, how does the following seem for starters?

Improved drought resistance and yield of wheat [or

    something similar]:

    *NU - coordinator (????) anti-oxidants/candidate genes

*Lancaster - not certain yet,*Belgrade FoA - as for SMARTWHEAT,

*IFVC - Boris in his element

*Viterbo - again SMARTWHEAT, but only yield effects.

*Apsovsementi - as for Carla, just yield.

*Roberto Tuberosa - always good value on any project

    *Another breeding SME in Italy

*Lleida - more-or-less as for SMARTWHEAT

*Martonvasar - Zoltan Bedo - screening wheat for drought

responses - close buddy of Boris.*??IPK - Andreas Borner - a big hitter in the wheat QTL

world and already identifying QTLs for drought responses.

*Kazakstan - Institute for blah, blah ...

I have a feeling that if we wait until we meet in mid June

we'll miss the boat of this one and Roberto and Andreas

Borner in particular will already be putting together similar

rival consortia. However, it's your call as I'm not in a

position here to be formal coordinator.Your move .....
