LX control systems in Sweden

• 1948, Sweden was among the first to build automatic LX

• Today Trafikverket has one of Europe's oldest automatic

LX control systems with 65-85 year old technology

Skånebanan 2014

Our latest solution was introduced

in 1967 when Sweden changed to

right-hand traffic.

Project ALEX – procure new LX control systems

• The Director General has approved the ALEX Procurement strategy

and Supply plan

• There are many suppliers of modern solutions in the EU

• Several products meet the requirements

• Trafikverket announced at the annual National Suppliers Day 2015:

• We have problems obtaining spare parts for our LX installations

• We need to replace 70-100 LX / year

• Framework agreements will be signed with two suppliers

• It includes four pilot installations per supplier

• Cost: 10–30 M€ / year

• Procurement information, see http://www.trafikverket.se/for-dig-i-

branschen/upphandling/Planerade-upphandlingar, search for

“Vägskyddsanläggningar” and http://www.trafikverket.se/for-dig-i-

branschen/teknik/anlaggningsteknik/vagskyddsanlaggningar/alex/

• AA, LX control system

– The LX supplier will be responsible for

• Assembly of all components in the cabinet unless other component contracts

(SG-SL) prevent this

• Delivery to LX site

• Installation of cabinet at LX site

– Trafikverket will be responsible for

• installation of external objects (FE-FN and AD) at pilot LX sites

– Once the system has received type approval, the LX supplier can offer installation

work in future site specific contracts

• AD, Train velocity sensor

– Not a safety component (the safety is ensured by track circuits)

– Relay interface to existing signal cables

– Existing power supply (24 V) can be reused

– Must detect trains above a specific velocity

– RAM requirements are the same as for other subsystems

– Estimated need is 800 units

• FP, Logging & Diagnostic

– The data will be transferred to TH (ALEX web service)

• SB, Power

– Power components will be sourced from separate frame agreements

• SC, Obstacle detection

– Obstacle detection will be sourced from a separate frame agreement

– Purchased 2013

• SG, Train detection

– Already installed track circuits will be used for detecting approaching trains

Comparison with the functions of today

To improve railway safety we add

– Logging and Diagnostics

To improve road safety we add

– Acoustic signals adjusted to the

ambient needs

– Improved protection against

trespassing ("barrier skirts")

To reduce maintenance costs we add

– IP/MPLS communication via optic

fiber or GSM-R

– ALEX web services for

maintenance personnel

• Status, log and diagnosis via

web interface

• Alarm on error

• Industrial 19 inch racks

• A low cabinet to provide road users a good visibility along the track

• Modular, one door per function

• ALEX is one of several modules

Modules/functions

• POWER

– Surge protection

– Rectifiers

– Batteries for 10 h

– Connection of alternative power supply

– Climate control

• IT

– IP/MPLS network via optic fiber or GSM-R

– Access control

– UPS service (power surveillance)

– ALEX web service for maintenance

personnel

• SIGNAL

– Interfaces to adjacent signaling

• Interlocking/ERTMS

• Track circuit (separate power, NiCd)

• Line Block

• ATC

• Disable Adjacent LX

• Common Distant signal toward trains

– ALEX, LX control system

• Training Center personnel are

assembling the prototype

• The prototype is used to

– Optimize space

– Dimension of the batteries

– Find interface requirements

– Receive feedback from maintenance

personnel and suppliers

• Photos and descriptions will be

released in April 2016

• During the tender period, a transQ

(category 1.3.5 Level Crossing)

qualified supplier can make an

appointment for a closer look at the

prototype

• Project ALEX must conduct in-service operation with the 4 future LX

protection options to validate all interfaces

1. Full barrier

interfaces to interlocking and obstacle detector

2. Half barrier

interface to track circuits; automatic on a line

3. Walkway, bicycle path and platform

Optical signals and signs in half size, barrier skirts and barrier

machines without moving counter weights (risk of causing crushing

injuries will not be accepted)

4. User-worked road barrier (Operated with mechanical key with chip for

authentication). Mainly a “one user” solution for farm/forest crossings.

• All 4 pilot installation must undergo probationary period of in-service

operation (6-12 months) to be approved by the National Safety

Authority

• When all 4 pilot installations are NSA approved Trafikverket can issue

a type approval for the LX control system and serial installations can

begin

4 pilot installations per supplier
