Come celebrate what Duhallow has to offer2 3

BACKGROUND

First brought to Ireland in 2012 by IRD Duhallow, the concept of the “Discover Duhallow...A Day of the Region Initiative” captured the essence of life in Duhallow and encouraged both locals and visitors alike to take part in the wide range of amenities, clubs, activities and resources that are on our door step in the region. More than 40 events were organised throughout Duhallow over a 10 day period. This was a joint initiative with communities in 8 other European countries taking part in their own regions.

Following its success in its first year, communities were at an advantage to take part in The Gathering in 2013 which was rolled out in Duhallow alongside the 2nd year of the Day of the Region Initiative. As a result of positive feedback from communities from 2012 it was decided to expand the initiative from 10 days to 6 weeks of events over the summer period. The Gathering helped to reach out to our families, friends and descendants who have moved away to invite them home during the Day of the Region Celebration

Now in 2014, communities have more than ever embraced the concept of the Day of The Region with events taking place throughout Duhallow for 9 consecutive weeks. Duhallow communities will showcase and share the very best of culture, sport, tradition and unique sense of fun they have to offer.

This 9 week programme of activities will be a celebration of rural community life and will showcase what Duhallow has to offer those living here as well as those visiting the region. Many people who are new to the area and working outside the region are often unaware of the wealth of activities and resources available right here on their door step.

From the programme of events included in this booklet there is something for everyone to see and do regardless of age and gender. Whether you enjoy active events or want something more sedentary the interests of everyone are well catered for.

Duhallow’s strongest asset is its people and IRD Duhallow has supported them through the bottom up approach to rural development in identifying the events they wished to organise and host for this initiative. The wide variety of events and the number of communities taking part is a perfect example of the strong sense of community spirit that has been fostered and developed in Duhallow. IRD Duhallow would like to thank all community groups and businesses for continuing to support this initiative.

CUlleNToday is the traditional day to ‘pay’ the rounds at St Laitiarans Well in Cullen. The Cures of varying illnesses are said to have taken place at St Laitiarans well over the years. St. Laitiaran is a revered figure shrouded in folklore and is connected with the pre-Christian festival of Lughnasa which celebrates the start of the Harvest. Laitiaran, the youngest of the three sister Saints went every morning to the local blacksmiths forge for the “seed” for her fire. She carried this seed in her apron from the forge to her cell without getting burnt – such were her miraculous powers. One morning as she lifted her skirt to take the embers, the blacksmith remarked on her beautiful ankles. St Laitiaran glanced proudly at her legs and because of this pride the coals burned her apron and fell through. She prayed that the sound of a blacksmiths anvil should never be heard again in Cullen and cursed the unfortunate blacksmith. For her penance she sank into the ground to re-emerge at the well, a hundred paces away, below the old graveyard. St Laitiarans Well is located in the heart of Cullen Village alongside the Hand Ball Alley, take a left and follow the track for 200 yards near the old graveyard.
