Welcome to the Mayo Performing Arts Center!

Dear Friends,

Each season, we look forward to exceeding your expectations and to bringing the best of the performing arts to Morristown. We hope you will agree that we’ve met the challenge once again for the 2013-2014 season. This year we are excited to offer our most diverse, entertaining and exciting season to date, featuring world-class headliners, fantastic theatre performances just off Broadway and innovative artists representing the best of the performing arts.

We strive to provide you with a superior experience from the moment you purchase your tickets to when you leave our venue. Our current lobby renovations are designed to enhance your visit. We are thrilled to expand the number of restroom facilities, open a new

box office, promote events on our electronic marquee and redo our Starlight Walkway. Work on the elevator to the balcony lobby, and our downstairs lobby is ongoing. We appreciate your patience as we complete the transformation of our facility into one of the most beautiful state of-the-art venues in the state to experience the arts.

Our lobby renovations, as well as the general operation of our non-profit performing arts center, could not be accomplished without your support. We would like to thank all of our Starlight Society members, general membership, foundations, local businesses, major corporations and government entities that help us sustain the performing arts in Morristown for over 200,000 patrons, including over 40,000 children annually.

We would like to thank our Board of Trustees, our dedicated staff and our devoted volunteers for their tireless work and exceptional efforts. All of this hard work has earned the Mayo Performing Arts Center attention. According to Pollstar Magazine’s mid-year attendance report, MPAC is ranked as the 37th most-visited Performing Arts Center for the first half of 2013. NJ Biz has honored us as one of the top 20 tourist attractions in New Jersey. And, we appreciate the many complimentary reviews and comments that many of you post about your experiences here.

We hope to see you here often throughout the season. Enjoy the performance!

Sincerely,

Joseph M. Goryeb Allison LarenaChairman, Board of Trustees President & CEO

Natalie Merchantwith New Jersey Festival Orchestra Ensemble

Page 14: Program Book - Issue 4

Natalie MerchantOver Natalie Merchant’s 30-year career, she has earned a distinguished place among America’s most respected recording artists with a reputation for being a prolific songwriter with a compelling artistic vision and a unique and captivating performance style. With her latest and highly acclaimed Nonesuch recording entitled, Leave Your Sleep, which debuted on the Billboard Top 200 at No. 17, Natalie Merchant embarks on a new artistic path, creating songs from literary inspiration which are composed for expanded musical ensembles and orchestra.Live performances of her new music have been enthusiastically received by her long-time fans and new audiences. Following her symphonic debut with the Boston Pops Orchestra, critics observed, Merchant has found her medium. Yes, the singer-songwriter scored platinum sales with her pop band 10,000 Maniacs, and she forged a commendably searching solo career in the group’s wake. But Merchant’s woody quaver has never sounded quite so right as it did framed by flutes, a weaving clarinet, and a gentle harp. Keith Lockhart’s orchestra was a full partner in the rich, handsome music. (The Boston Globe)In conjunction with her next orchestral recording (release planned for spring 2012), Natalie Merchant will undertake an extensive touring project performing with symphony orchestras throughout the world.Natalie Merchant began her musical career as the lead vocalist and lyricist of the pop music band 10,000 Maniacs and released two platinum and four gold records with the group between 1981 and 1993 (The Wishing Chair, In My Tribe, Blind Man’s Zoo, Hope Chest, Our Time in Eden, and MTV Unplugged). Together with artists like R.E.M., they defined college rock and created the first wave of alternative rock bands and what became known as the alternative rock format on FM radio. In 1994, Natalie Merchant began her solo career with a self-produced debut album, Tigerlily (1995). In the years following, she released Ophelia (1998), Natalie Merchant Live (1999) and Motherland (2001). In 2003, Merchant independently released an album of American and British folk music, The

House Carpenter’s Daughter, on her own label, Myth America Records. In 2005, she curated a collection of her own work for a double album, Retrospective and another for her former band, Campfire Songs.Natalie Merchant has collaborated both on stage and in the studio with a wide range of artists including Philip Glass, Wynton Marsalis, David Byrne, The Chieftains, Mavis Staples, REM, Daniel Lanois, Ladysmith Black Mambazo, Tracy Chapman, Dan Zanes, Billy Bragg and Wilco. Throughout her career, Merchant has also been dedicated to supporting a variety of non-profit organizations by lending financial support and raising public awareness. Scenic Hudson, Riverkeeper, The Center for Constitutional Rights, Doctors Without Borders, Tibet House, Greenpeace, The Southern Center for Human Rights and Planned Parenthood are among the social justice groups to which she has been devoted. Merchant has also served as an appointed member of the prestigious New York State Council on the Arts (2007-2011).

KEB’MO’

Page 18: Program Book - Issue 4

Keb’ Mo’The Reflection is the first new studio album by Keb Mo since Suitcase in 2006. These twelve songs are the product of an important period of personal and professional growth for the artist formerly known as Kevin Moore. In that time, he started a new family; moved from Los Angeles to Nashville; built a state–of–the–art home studio, and founded his own label, Yolabelle International, distributed by Ryko and the Warner Music Group.Keb Mo is a three–time Grammy Award winner for Best Contemporary Blues Album; and a key figure in the acclaimed 2003 PBS series Martin Scorsese Presents The Blues. But The Reflection is not, in essence, a blues album. In sound and spirit, it’s closer to the work of African–American “folk soul” singer/songwriters like Bill Withers, Bobby Womack, and Terry Callier.Indeed, tracks like “My Shadow” and “Crush On You” would have fit neatly into Urban radio’s “Quiet Storm” format at almost any time in the past 25 years. The Reflection brings together all of this singular artist’s diverse influences – pre–disco R&B, American

folk and gospel, rock, blues, and more – in a sound that is truly and uniquely his own.“I worked on this record for the better part of two years,” says Keb. “It took me some time as this was an educational process for me and my engineer John Schirmer. I didn’t want to let it go until I had something that I was proud to share with the public. It’s the culmination of all of my influences throughout my career.”Through all the changes of the past several years, Keb Mo found time to play a couple of hundred shows on several continents. He composed and recorded music for the acclaimed TNT series “Memphis Beat,” starring Jason Lee and Alfre Woodward. And he wrote some of the best songs of his career for The Reflection – material strong enough to attract such notable guests as country music superstar Vince Gill (“My Baby’s Tellin’ Lies”), nouveau–soul chanteuse India.Arie (“Crush On You”), saxophonist Dave Koz (“One Of These Nights”), and veteran session guitarist David T. Walker (“All The Way,” “The Reflection,” “The Whole Enchilada”).

JIM BELUSHI AND THEBOARD OF COMEDY

Page 20: Program Book - Issue 4

Jim Belushi and the Board of ComedyJim Belushi began his acting career in Chicago, Illinois studying at three of the top theatres: The Goodman, The Apollo, and The Second City. After his two-year stint on Saturday Night Live, Jim appeared in over 75 movies, including Red Heat, About Last Night, The Principal, and K-9, and five television series, including eight years on According to Jim and, most recently, CBS’s The Defenders. In 2011, Jim gained rave reviews on Broadway as Harry Brock in Born Yesterday.  However, drama and comedy are not the only facets to Jim’s breadth of talents. For the past fifteen years, he has been singing, dancing, and playing harmonica in the Blues Brothers with Dan Aykroyd and with his own band, The Sacred Hearts. Together they have produced four albums and performed all over the world.  Jim is thrilled to be getting back to his improv roots with this incredibly talented and hilarious group of actors. In conjunction with The Chicago Board of Comedy, Jim has also recently opened The Comedy Bar, a stand-up club in his hometown of Chicago in River North.THE BOARD OF COMEDY“We are not stand-up comedians. Our show is not a passive, sit-back-and-watch experience. Most of the fun we have on stage comes from our inclusion of the audience – we get suggestions from them to begin each scene we perform, and in certain instances, bring them on-stage with us to add to our performance. It’s less a ‘show’ and more a party. At least it feels like one to me. This group of actors brings me right back to how I started out in comedy – maybe that’s why we have so much fun doing it.” – Jim BelushiWith more than thirty years of experience and an alumnus of “Saturday Night Live” and Chicago’s famed Second City, JIM BELUSHI is now bringing to the stage an improvised comedy sketch show featuring members of the Board of Comedy.Belushi starred on the ABC hit comedy “According to Jim,” on which he also served as executive producer, music composer and director. After wrapping 182 episodes for its eighth and final season, the family favorite series also hit a milestone when it launched into off-net syndication in 2007. A favorite of film, television and stage audiences, Belushi

is one of the great leading character actors equally at home in drama and comedy, and a gifted performer who can also hold a room as front man of a rhythm and blues band. Accompanying Belushi are Megan Grano, Larry Joe Campbell, Brad Morris, and Joshua Funk*, all of whom are classically trained professional improvisers who tour regularly nationwide.MEGAN GRANOMegan Grano has appeared on TV in Weeds, Parks and Recreation, Hot in Cleveland, Conan, The Great State of Georgia, and American Dad. Film roles include Bridesmaids and This is 40. She is a 2007 alum of The Second City Chicago. Megan is also an iO Theater alum, where she has performed since 1999. She is beyond grateful to be a part of the Board of Comedy.LARRY JOE CAMPBELLLarry Joe Campbell is excited to be onstage with this super talented cast! And he is ecstatic to be back with Jim again having worked together for 8 seasons on According to Jim.  Since then, Larry has appeared in the movies Hall Pass and Killers and has had recurring roles on Weeds, Rules of Engagement, and Lifetime’s The Protector. Larry Joe can be seen this summer in R.I.P.D. with Ryan Reynolds and Kevin Bacon and in Guillermo del Toro’s Pacific Rim.  Larry Joe lives in Los Angeles with his wife, Peggy, and their five children. Larry would like you to know that he loves you. (Yes, you. The one who’s reading this.)BRAD MORRISBrad Morris is a sketch comedian, actor, writer, director and improvisor. An alum of The Second City’s Mainstage, Brad is also a founding member of the long form improvisational groups,The  Reckoning and Uncle’s Brother with Tim Meadows.  Brad has appeared in roles on Modern Family, The Office, Curb Your  Enthusiasm, The League, Nick Swardson’s Pretendtime, Mash-Up, as well as many national commercials. He is also a staff writer and actor on the TBS show, Cougartown. Brad makes funny videos with his friends, like: Almost Pimps, Special Needs, A Certain Breed, The Angriest Taxi Driver in The World, The Blisters: How Four Became Three, and Find Money.

LES BALLETS TROCKADERO DE MONTE CARLO

Page 26: Program Book - Issue 4

Les Ballets Trockadero de Monte CarloFounded in 1974 by a group of ballet enthusiasts for the purpose of presenting a playful, entertaining view of traditional, classical ballet in parody form and en travesti, Les Ballets Trockadero de Monte Carlo first performed in the late-late shows in Off-Off Broadway lofts. The Trocks, as the dancers are affectionately known, quickly garnered a major critical essay by Arlene Croce in The New Yorker which, combined with reviews in The New York Times and The Village Voice, established the company as an artistic and popular success.By mid-1975, the Trocks’ inspired blend of a loving knowledge of dance, impeccable comic approach, and the astounding fact that men can, indeed, dance en pointe without falling flat on their faces, was being noted beyond New York. Articles and notices in publications such as Variety, Oui, The London Daily Telegraph, as well as a Richard Avedon photo essay in Vogue, made the company nationally and internationally known. The 1975-76 season was a year of growth and full professionalization. The company added management, qualified for the National Endowment for the Arts Touring Program, hired a full-time teacher and ballet mistress to oversee daily classes and rehearsals, and made its first extended tours of the United States and Canada. Packing, unpacking, and repacking tutus and drops, stocking giant-sized toe shoes by the case, and running for planes and chartered buses all became routine parts of life.Since those beginnings, the Trocks have established themselves as a major dance phenomenon throughout the world. The company has participated in dance festivals in Turkey, Holland, San Luis Potosi, Madrid, Montreal, New York, Paris, Spoleto, Turin, and Vienna. There have been television appearances as varied as a Shirley MacLaine special, The Dick Cavett Show, What’s My Line?, Real People, On-Stage America, visiting with Kermit and Miss Piggy on Muppet Babies, and a BBC Omnibus special on the world of ballet, hosted by Jennifer Saunders. The Trocks also had their own solo specials on national networks in Japan and Germany, as well as a French television special with Julia Migenes. A documentary was filmed and

aired internationally by the acclaimed British arts program, The South Bank Show, and the Company was featured in The Egg, the PBS program about arts in America. Several performances were taped by a consortium of Dutch, French and Japanese TV networks at the Maison de la Danse in Lyon, France, for worldwide broadcast and DVD distribution. The Trocks’ numerous tours have been both popular and critical successes - the company’s annual schedules have included six tours to Australia and New Zealand, twenty-five to Japan (where annual visits have created a nation-wide cult following and a fan club), ten to South America, three to South Africa, and fifty-five tours of Europe. In the United States, the company has become a regular part of the college and university circuit, in addition to frequent presentations in all of the 50 states. The company has appeared in over thirty countries and over five hundred cities worldwide since its founding in 1974. Increasingly, the company is presenting longer seasons, which have included extended engagements in Amsterdam, Athens, Auckland, Barcelona, Beijing, Berlin, Brisbane, Buenos Aires, Caracas, Cologne, Glasgow, Hamburg, Hong Kong, Johannesburg, Lisbon, London, Lyon, Madrid, Melbourne, Moscow (at the famed Bolshoi Theater), Paris (at the Théâtre Musical de Paris Châtelet), Perth, Rome, Singapore, Sydney, Tokyo, Vienna and Wellington. The company continues to appear in benefits for international AIDS organizations such as DRA (Dancers Responding to AIDS) and Classical Action in New York City; the Life Ball in Vienna, Austria; Dancers for Life in Toronto, Canada; and London’s Stonewall Gala. In addition, the Trocks have given or participated in special benefit performances for Connecticut Ballet Theater, Ballet Hawaii, Rochester City Ballet, Sadler’s Wells Theater in London and the Gay and Lesbian Community Center and Young Audiences/Arts for Learning Organization, and the Ali Forney House, benefiting gay youths in need, in New York City. The original concept of Les Ballets Trockadero de Monte Carlo has not changed. It is a company of professional male dancers performing the full range of the ballet and modern dance repertoire, including classical

Page 27: Program Book - Issue 4

and original works in faithful renditions of the manners and conceits of those dance styles. The comedy is achieved by incorporating and exaggerating the foibles, accidents, and underlying incongruities of serious dance. The fact that men dance all the parts - heavy bodies delicately balancing on toes as swans, sylphs, water sprites, romantic princesses, or angst-ridden Victorian ladies - enhances, rather than mocks, the spirit of dance as an art form, delighting and amusing the most knowledgeable, as well as novices, in the audiences.

After recent appearances on ABC News and for the Prince of Wales on the Royal Variety Show, the dancers of Les Ballets Trockadero de Monte Carlo have become more well-known than ever. For the future, there are plans for new works in the repertoire; new cities, states and countries to perform in; and for the continuation of the Trocks’ original purpose: to bring the pleasure of dance to the widest possible audience. The company will, as it has done for thirty-five years, “Keep on Trockin’.”

Rich Little: Jimmy Stewart & FriendsU.S. Presidents: John F. Kennedy, Lyndon Johnson, Richard Nixon, Gerald Ford, Jimmy Carter, Ronald Reagan, Bill Clinton, both George Bushes...Rich Little has an impression of each of them. Infamous for his skewing of political figures, Little has charmed, amused, annoyed and lampooned politicians from here to his native Canada. He entertained at both of Reagan’s presidential inaugurations and spent much of 2003 touring the United States with his show “The Presidents.” A master mimic of more than 200 voices, Little continues to impress throughout the world, with regular stops in Atlantic City, Las Vegas, Reno, Hawaii, Chicago, New York, Canada and London.A professed classic movie buff, he’s particularly fond of doing Alan Ladd (his childhood hero) and others who are no longer generally remembered, but Little has also latched on to Baby Boomer-friendly characters, such as Edith Bunker, Kermit the Frog, Robin Leach and Dr. Ruth Westheimer, to name a few. Some of his favorite current impressions are of stars Arnold Schwarzenegger, Sylvester Stallone, Jack Nicholson and Clint Eastwood. “They’re easy to do,” he says. “They are larger than life.” Little says, “an impression is what you think a person sounds like. It could be an exaggeration or a cartoon. It’s your impression. I think of an impersonation as more of an exact copy. Knowing the person personally is not important; it’s knowing the speech patterns and mannerisms [in order] to imitate the person the way the public sees him.” It took him seven years to perfect Frank Sinatra, but only several minutes to mimic Dr. Ruth. The son of a doctor in Ottawa, Little started his “career” at the age of 12 when he answered back to his teachers in their own voices. Observing the teachers in action was infinitely more fun than paying attention to class work. To get dates, he’d find out the girl’s favorite actor, then call her up imitating that actor’s voice. Then when Little showed up, he’d say, “Sorry, Cary [Grant] can’t make it.”

Little’s first appearances were in a small club in Canada. “I got booked into this place in Quebec, and when I started my act, I discovered that no one in the audience understood English. It was strictly a French-speaking audience.” He figured he was dead until an inspiration hit him. “I did walks – Jack Benny’s walk, Bob Hope’s walk, John Wayne’s walk. They all walk the same in French and in English,” he recalls. Impressions came in handy to Little, while working as a disc jockey and talk show host. During one April Fool’s Day marathon, he had “Jimmy Durante” emcee the morning show, “James Mason” was a rock ‘n’ roll deejay and “Elvis Presley” hosted an afternoon program. Like the infamous 1939 broadcast of “War of the Worlds,” 500 autograph-hungry Elvis-believing fans besieged the station, thinking the King was really there. Still in his early 20s, Little was discovered while working in the United States. His friend, singer Mel Torme, then on the musical team of CBS network’s The Judy Garland Show, asked him to make a tape. Instead of the usual impressions, Little did Fred MacMurray, Dana Andrews, James Mason and Van Heflin, ‘the kinds of people nobody did.’ Garland thought it was great and Little was signed to the show. Appearances on TV variety shows starring Ed Sullivan, Jackie Gleason, Glen Campbell and Dean Martin followed, as well as on series such as Laugh-In, The John Davidson Summer Show and The Julie Andrews Show. Little also had his own variety show in the 70s and was the star of the TV show KopyKats. Little was a guest host early on for The Tonight Show, hosting 12 times. He quickly became a household name sitting in one of the Hollywood Squares and has also appeared on the Oak Ridge Boys Variety Special.Named “Comedy Star of the Year” by the American Guild of Variety Artists. The perpetrator of nine comedy albums and three HBO comedy specials, as well as Emmy-award winning special “Rich Little’s Christmas Carol” with “W.C. Fields” as Scrooge, “Humphrey Bogart” as one of the ghosts and “Paul Lynde” as Bob Cratchit. His latest appearance on HBO was as Johnny

Page 31: Program Book - Issue 4

Carson in the movie The Late Shift, which dealt with the race to succeed Carson on The Tonight Show. Little has appeared on the daytime soaps The Young and the Restless and Santa Barbara. He has made dramatic guest shots on Fantasy Island, Chips, Murder She Wrote, Hawaii Five-O, MacGyver, Police Woman and Mannix. In a GQ magazine fashion spread, Little was pictured as Richard Nixon, Jack Nicholson, Cary Grant, George Burns, Ronald Reagan and Humphrey Bogart. In an Oscar pre-cast of ABC’s Primetime (with Diane Sawyer and Sam Donaldson) he spoofed classic movies, proposing how they would end with different casts, starring Little as “Bette Midler” for Scarlett O’Hara and “Arnold Schwarzenegger” for Hamlet.Little’s expert impressions have also been used seriously, such as the time he stepped in for stars who were unable to do their own redubbings on soundtracks. David Niven’s vocal cords were gone due to illness in his last film, Curse of the Pink Panther; Peter Sellers himself was gone by the end of The Trail of the Pink Panther; so Little provided both voices for these films. The TV series Mickey Spillane’s Mike Hammer needed voice-over narrations on three shows, but

star Stacey Keach was unable to finish them. Little was called in to finish the job. He also did Gene Kelly for a Christmas special when Kelly lost his voice. His greatest fear? A sore throat. “Other people get a cold, and they just get a cold. I get a cold and John Wayne gets a cold, Orson Welles gets a cold, Nixon gets a cold, Truman Capote gets a cold. No correction – Truman gets the sniffles. I get a cold and it’s all over.” Over the years Little has been active with children’s charities and he was co-host of the Canadian division of the Children’s Miracle Network. He was inducted into the Miami Children’s Hospital International Pediatrics Hall of Fame for his tireless efforts in fundraising on behalf of children. In June 1998, Little’s star was added to the Canadian Walk of Fame to go along with his current star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. In January 2010, Little became a U.S. citizen where he can now vote for those politicos who he mimics so well. Unfortunately, his wife and love Marie, passed away later that year. He proudly has two daughters who also live in the U.S. although not in Las Vegas where he resides, and he has a beautiful granddaughter, Alaina.

The Ten Tenors on BroadwayDuring groundbreaking achievements in the fifteen-year history of The TEN Tenors, one thing is for sure they will always give one hundred percent to ensure that you have a great night out.It is clear this is a continually evolving group. What was once known as a group of university friends whom banded together to make pocket money during their studies at the Queensland Conservatorium of Music has, powered through fifteen years on the international stage, morphing into a troupe of road warriors, respected and adored throughout the world, championing the legacy of the group’s humble beginnings whilst striving forward into the future of the classical cross-over genre. The TEN Tenors respectfully tip their hats to their classical roots and share with audience’s unique renditions of the genre’s best-loved pieces, but they also push the boundaries of what it means to be a ‘tenor’ and to sit in the ‘classical’ genre in today’s world. Taking cues from some of music’s most courageous contemporary artists such as Freddy Mercury and Meatloaf, The TEN, see rock opera as not only a way of keeping their show fresh and reaching new audiences, but appealing to the myriad of musical preferences a ten-piece musical act shares.Amidst incredible international success, this Australian troupe has become known as one of the hardest working touring acts; performing on average up to 250 show per year across seven continents, they have sold over 3.5 million concert tickets; have four

gold CDs and two platinum CDs; two gold DVDs and one platinum gold DVD; they continually strive to challenge themselves and their audience.Touring like a rock band, The TEN, whose average age is 26, and their crew have seen enviable, unique sights from all corners of the globe and have crazy stories to challenge any deviant touring rock band. They are also renowned for their commitment to their fans; meeting their fans after every show for signings as well as all personally interacting on their social media pages, which is a rare and admirable quality for an artist at all these days, let alone one with the gruelling touring schedule of The TEN.Long-serving member of The TEN, Michael Manikus says “So many people, particularly men, turn up to a show, having been dragged by their wives, arms folded, thinking they’re going to watch us croon to the ladies and serve up yet another watery classical- crossover show. Not too far into the show they realise we are a group of down-to-earth Aussie blokes, that have power and guts in our performance and they leave not only pleasantly surprised, but fans themselves.”The group’s producer, D-J Wendt adds, “We like to think audiences come to our show to hear arias that will give them goose bumps like they have never felt before. With this show, we know they will get that, but we promise to also make you feel like you have just rocked out or been to the best party you have been to in ages.”

Drew CareyDrew Carey is a stand-up comic turned actor and producer who had the distinction of having two hit shows simultaneously: the long-running comedy “The Drew Carey Show,” which ran from 1995-2004, and the improv/sketch show “Whose Line Is It Anyway?” on which he was host and a producer. The success of that show led to the creation of “Drew Carey’s Improv All-Stars,” an improv troupe that performs in showrooms across the country. In July 2007, Carey was named the host of THE PRICE IS RIGHT, succeeding longtime host Bob Barker. While in the Marine Reserves, his military buzz cut and black wide-rim glasses became part of his trademark look. He began his successful career as a comedian in April of 1986 at the Cleveland Comedy Club. One of his first big breaks was competing on “Star Search ‘88.”In 1991, Carey landed a spot on HBO’s “14th

Annual Young Comedians Special” and appeared on “The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson.” Carey landed his own television development deal at Disney, which led to an opportunity for Carey to co-star in the series “The Good Life.” Carey also had the opportunity to work with Bruce Helford, who was a consulting writer on the series and hired Carey as a staff writer for “The Gaby Hoffman Show.” Their experience led the two of them to decide to co-create a series for Carey. Carey went on to star in his own comedy special for Showtime, “Drew Carey: Human Cartoon” and performed in Showtime’s “Tenth Anniversary of the Montreal Comedy Festival.”Carey was born in Cleveland, Ohio and currently resides in Los Angeles. His birth date is May 23. Follow Carey on twitter @DrewFromTV and @TPIRhost.

Melissa Etheridge: This is ME SoloIn February 2007, Melissa Etheridge celebrated a career milestone with a victory in the “Best Song” category at the Academy® Awards for “I Need to Wake Up,” written for the Al Gore documentary on global warming, An Inconvenient Truth. Over the course of her more than two decades as a performer and songwriter, Etheridge has shown herself to be an artist who has never allowed “inconvenient truths” to keep her down. Earlier in her recording career, Etheridge acknowledged her sexual orientation when it was considered less than prudent to do so. In October 2004, Etheridge was diagnosed with breast cancer, a health battle that, with her typical tenacity, she won. Despite losing her hair from chemotherapy, Etheridge appeared on the 2005 Grammy® telecast to sing “Piece of My Heart” in tribute to Janis Joplin. By doing so she gave hope to many women afflicted with the disease. Born in Leavenworth, Kansas, Melissa Etheridge picked up the guitar at the age of eight and began playing in local bands in her teens. After completing high school, Etheridge was accepted as a student at Boston’s Berklee College of Music, but left after only one year to make her way as a performer in Los Angeles. Her bluesy vocal style and riveting stage presence began earning Etheridge a strong following. Legend has it that in a chance encounter at a small club in Long Beach with music industry legend and Island Records founder Chris Blackwell she was signed on the spot leading Blackwell to confess that he felt “The future of Rock and Roll has a female face”.Melissa’s first album, Melissa Etheridge (1988), was a critically-acclaimed debut that led to an invitation to sing on the 1989 Grammy® Awards broadcast. For several years, her popularity built around such memorable originals as “Bring Me Some Water,” “No Souvenirs” and “Ain’t It Heavy,” for which she won a Grammy® in 1992. Etheridge hit her commercial and artistic stride with her fourth album, Yes I Am (1993). The collection featured the massive hits, “I’m the Only One” and “Come to My Window,” a searing song of longing that brought Etheridge her second Grammy® Award for Best Female Rock Performance. In 1995, Etheridge issued her

highest charting album, Your Little Secret, which was distinguished by the hit single, “I Want to Come Over.” Her astounding success that year led to Etheridge receiving the Songwriter of the Year honor at the ASCAP Pop Awards in 1996.Melissa continued to write, record, and tour throughout the ‘90s and into the new millennium, releasing Skin (2001) and the upbeat Lucky (2004) along with her DVDs Live And Alone (2002) and Lucky Live (2004). 2005 marked the release of Greatest Hits: The Road Less Traveled, which includes “I Run for Life,” commissioned by Ford Cares as part of their cancer initiative in support of The Susan G. Komen Race For The Cure. The album was recently re-released in an Eco-pak, to include Melissa’s Oscar® winning song “I Need To Wake Up.” In April 2007, Melissa Etheridge received the distinguished ASCAP Founders Award and released her ninth studio album, The Awakening, selected by Rolling Stone Magazine as one of their Top 50 Albums of 2007. In 2009, Melissa released her 10th studio album, Fearless Love, to a Top 10 Billboard debut. 2011 was an exciting year for Melissa. She made her Broadway debut as St. Jimmy in Green Day’s rock opera, American Idiot, and received her Star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. In 2012, she released her most recent album 4th St. Feeling. Melissa will perform sold out shows throughout Europe, Australia, and North America. When Melissa is not on tour, she records her syndicated Melissa Etheridge Radio Show for daily broadcast on stations throughout the US and Canada.

Merle Haggardand the Strangers

Page 58: Program Book - Issue 4

Merle HaggardThe word “legend” usually makes an appearance at some point when discussing Merle Haggard. It’s an acknowledgement of his artistry and his standing as “the poet of the common man.” It’s a tribute to his incredible commercial success and to the lasting mark he has made, not just on country music, but on American music as a whole. It’s apt in every way but one. The term imposes an aura of loftiness that’s totally at odds with the grit and heart of Haggard’s songs. “I’d be more comfortable with something like “professor,” he once told a reporter, and the description suits him. Studying, analyzing and observing the details of life around him, Haggard relays what he sees, hears and feels through his songs. The lyrics are deceptively simple, the music exceptionally listenable. Others who have lived through those same situations recognize the truth in the stories he tells. But Haggard’s real gift is that anyone who hears his songs recognizes the truth in them. When a Merle Haggard song plays, it can make an innocent-as-apple-pie grandma understand the stark loneliness and self-loathing of a prisoner on death row; a rich kid who never wanted for any material possession get a feel for the pain of wondering where the next meal will come from; a tee-totaling pillar of the community sympathize with the poor heartbroken guy downing shots at the local bar.As a result, Haggard found his songs at the top of the charts on a regular basis. Immediately embraced by country fans, he also earned the respect of his peers. In addition to the 40 #1 hits included here, Haggard charted scores of Top Ten songs. He won just about every music award imaginable, both as a performer and as a songwriter, and in 1994 was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame. His body of work easily places him beside Hank Williams as one of the most influential artists in country music. That’s quite an accomplishment for the boy who was once officially branded “incorrigible.”Merle Ronald Haggard was born in 1937, outside Bakersfield, California. His parents, Jim and Flossie, moved the family there after their farm in Oklahoma burned down, with Jim finding work as a carpenter for the Santa

Fe Railroad. The family lived in an old boxcar that they converted into a home. Though struggling to make a meager living, they had a sturdy shelter and food was always on the table.Things changed dramatically after Jim died of a stroke when Merle was nine years old. It was a devastating event for the young boy, who was very close to his father. His mother went to work as a bookkeeper to make ends meet, often leaving Merle in the care of a great aunt and uncle. With his world turned upside down, Haggard turned rebellious. He hopped a freight train when he was just ten years old, making it to Fresno before being picked up by the authorities. It was the first step toward a youth of truancy from school and petty crime. For the next few years, Haggard would find himself in reform schools, sometimes making an escape, only to get thrown back in again. The angel on his shoulder during these troubled times was Haggard’s love and talent for music. Though he gave it up before Merle was born, his father used to play fiddle and guitar in Oklahoma for schoolhouse dances and social gatherings. Not having an automobile or formal instrument cases, the senior Haggard would ride his horse to these gatherings, carrying his fiddle on one side of the horse and the guitar on the other, in large pillowcases.Still some of the musical gift had been passed on to Merle, and he easily took to playing guitar. Starting out as a fan of Bob Wills, Haggard eventually found his musical idol in Lefty Frizzell, and worked up a pretty impressive copy of the originals singing style. “For three or four years I didn’t sing anything but Lefty Frizzell songs,” Merle told Music City News. “And then, because Lefty was a fan of Jimmie Rodgers, I learned to imitate him too.” Haggard got the chance to see Lefty perform in person when he was 14. “He was dressed in white - heroes usually are,” Merle said. The hero wasn’t a savior though, at least not in an immediate sense. Haggard was already starting to make small amounts of money here and there by playing music, but it wasn’t enough to keep him out of trouble. He left home at 15 with a friend, and the two were picked up as suspects in a robbery. Though

Page 59: Program Book - Issue 4

innocent, he ended up in jail for two-and-a-half weeks. It was the first time he tasted prison life, but it wasn’t the last. In and out of jail over the years for small crimes, he found himself doing serious time in San Quentin at the age of 20.“Going to prison has one of a few effects,” he told Salon in 2004. “It can make you worse, or it can make you understand and appreciate freedom. I learned to appreciate freedom when I didn’t have any.”His musical ability offered hope for a future. A fellow inmate at San Quentin, nicknamed Rabbit, saw that clearly. When Rabbit came up with an escape plan, he told Haggard that he could come along, but probably shouldn’t, since he had a good shot of making a career from his singing. As Rabbit had predicted, Haggard’s music was his way out of a dead-end life of small crimes and intermittent jail time. Released from San Quentin in 1960, he joined the then thriving Bakersfield country scene, which eschewed the smooth country-politan sound coming out of Nashville for a harder-hitting honky-tonk groove. After making an impression working in local clubs, Haggard joined Las Vegas star Wynn Stewart’s band in 1962 as a bassist. When he got a chance to record his own single, Haggard chose the Stewart composition, “Sing A Sad Song.” It came out on the small Tally Records label in 1964, and made it into the Top Twenty. His follow up singles didn’t do quite as well, until “(My Friends Are Gonna Be) Strangers” went into the Top Ten and brought him to the attention of Capitol Records. He proved himself a hit maker with three Top Ten singles in 1967, including his first #1, “The Fugitive.”Songwriters Liz and Casey Anderson were inspired by a popular TV series, “The Fugitive.” But Haggard knew firsthand what it was like to be on the run. In some ways, he may have felt that he was in that same situation again. Here he’d successfully turned his life around, and he realized that his criminal past might now come back to slap him down. He made those feelings clear less than a year later in his next #1. The self-penned “Branded Man” includes the lines, “When they let me out of prison, I held my head up high/Determined I would rise above the shame/But no matter where I’m living, the black mark follows me/I’m branded with a number on my name.”

Haggard said Johnny Cash encouraged him to address his problems directly in verse. “I was bull-headed about my career. I didn’t want to talk about being in prison,” Haggard recalls, “but Cash said I should talk about it. That way the tabloids wouldn’t be able to. I said I didn’t want to do that and he said, ‘It’s just owning up to it.’” When Cash introduced him on his variety show, he said, “Here’s a man who writes about his own life and has had a life to write about.”From that point on, Haggard stopped hiding the story of his past incarcerations, and his songs opened a window on the dark life of prisoners and ex-cons. “Sing Me Back Home,” another #1 in 1967, was written for his old friend Rabbit, who was executed after his escape plan led to the death of a prison guard. “Mama Tried,” which reached the top of the chart in 1968, offered an apology of sorts to Haggard’s religious and hardworking mother, absolving her of blame for his bad behavior. He laid out all the other aspects of his life in subsequent songs, proving himself an adept lyricist who specialized in sorrow and pain, with the occasional dash of hope or humor. His 1969 hit “Hungry Eyes,” a heartrending portrait of a family in poverty, includes a line about a “canvas-covered cabin,” a reference to the home of the great aunt and uncle he stayed with as a boy. By 1969, Haggard had also won over a good portion of musicians and critics in the rock world. Rolling Stone itself pointed its readers toward his music. Producer Don Was, who has worked with Bob Dylan, the Rolling Stones and Bonnie Raitt, told Newsweek in 1996, “He’ll tell you he’s a country singer, but to me the essence of rock and roll is a cry for freedom and rebellion. And I don’t know anyone who embodies it better. Every aspect of his life is a refusal to submit.”Still, Was admits that when he went to see Haggard in concert in the late ‘60s he tucked his hippie-length hair into a cowboy hat. It was a politically divisive time, with the Vietnam War serving as a lightning rod for opposing political views. Young people protested against the war and openly burned their draft cards, enraging those who felt it was their patriotic duty to support the war and the men who fought it. “Working Man Blues,” which came out in 1969, may have appealed to the rock crowd because of its hard-driving beat and its anti-elitism, but

Page 60: Program Book - Issue 4

it delivered a clear message of solidarity to the blue collar country audience, with its uncomplimentary reference to welfare. That political stance was solidified with Haggard’s most popular song, “Okie From Muskogee.” He says the song started as a joke, and its tone definitely leans toward the humorous, but it also drew a clear line between “us” and “them.” Haggard spoke for the Americans who didn’t smoke marijuana, didn’t burn their draft cards, didn’t grow their hair long and shaggy and were “proud to wave Old Glory down at the courthouse.” Followed by the belligerent “Fightin’ Side of Me,” which undeniably challenged the anti-war protesters, it made Haggard a political symbol. In the ensuing years, Richard Nixon invited him to sing at the White House. Ronald Reagan, then Governor of California, gave him an unconditional pardon for his past criminal offenses. George Wallace asked him for an endorsement - which Haggard turned down. The furor caused by those two songs took Haggard by surprise, but he never shied away from writing songs with a strong point of view. In 1972, he released “I Wonder If They Ever Think Of Me,” which revisits Vietnam via the thoughts of a P.O.W., while 1973’s “If We Make It Through December” crystallized the worries of an unemployed father at a time when much of the U.S. was feeling the effects of a particularly difficult recession.Of course, Haggard also wrote about more cheerful issues. “Daddy Frank (The Guitar Man)” in 1971, and “Grandma Harp” in 1972, both express his joy in music and how it saved him in low times. All of the particulars of his existence were source material, and Haggard is a man who has been married five times. When his second marriage, to Bonnie Owens, was unraveling, the hurt came through in songs like “Things Aren’t Funny Anymore,” with the line “Seems we’ve lost the way to find/All the good times we found before.” Owens, who had previously been married to Buck Owens, was Haggard’s first duet partner and a good friend as well as his wife. His romantic devotion is apparent in “Always Wanting You,” a sigh of unrequited love that he wrote for Dolly Parton, who he pined for when his marriage to Bonnie was over. His third wife, Leona Williams, was also a singer and songwriter. The sweetness of “It’s All In The Movies,” mirrored Haggard’s renewed romantic happiness. Then, when

that marriage began to crumble, fans heard the details in his recordings of “You Take Me For Granted,?? written by the soon-to-be-ex Mrs. Haggard and “Someday When Things Are Good,” written by both Merle and Leona.Chances are good that Haggard also drew from personal experience when he sang such drinking songs as “Bar Room Buddies,” a duet with Clint Eastwood, and “I Think I’ll Just Stay Here and Drink” in 1980.Though the hits slowed down a bit in the following decades, Haggard never stopped making music. He started producing his own cuts for the first time, and “My Favorite Memory” and “Big City,” went to #1 in 1981. The next year he and George Jones made an album together, with their duet “Yesterday’s Wine,” reaching the top of the chart. Teaming up with another legend-in-the-making, Willie Nelson, Haggard scored again with the 1983 hit “Pancho and Lefty.” In 1987, he scored his last #1, “Twinkle, Twinkle Lucky Star.”In the mid-nineties, with the release of the box set Down Every Road coming at the same time Haggard was releasing an album of new music, the media turned its attention to the long-ignored singer once more. His status as a living legend took hold about then, with good reason. It was overdue. It would be difficult to find an artist as creative, as successful, and as stubbornly true to himself as Haggard. In between his hits, he made albums that paid tribute to the musicians who influenced him, like Jimmie Rodgers, Lefty Frizzell and Bob Wills - done out of respect rather than commercial calculation. He blended elements of jazz, rock, blues and folk music into his arrangements, while staying true to the traditions of country. No matter what the current fashion of the moment was in music, Haggard always went his own way.“I’ll tell you what the public likes more than anything,” he told the Boston Globe, “It’s the most rare commodity in the world - honesty.”
