PROJECT PROFILE – CLIFFORD CHANCE
Planned over two years, but undertaken in
just five weekends, Clifford Chance, the
world’s largest, fully integrated law firm
moved over 3,000 staff to centralise its
London offices into a one million sq ft
building in the heart of Canary Wharf.
The layout of the office enables Clifford
Chance’s legal specialists and support staff
to work together as part of project teams.
Taller units are used to define office areas
with tambour shutters opening to the
walkway and rear facing tool-rails enabling
notice boards, screens and even artwork to
be suspended above the workstations.
Appearance also influenced the units
chosen, with architects Gensler opting for
white cabinets to maintain the light, open
appearance of the building. Low cabinets
featured sloping birch tops to match the
desks and provide reading space while
preventing papers being left on view.

PROJECT PROFILE – CLUTTONS
When the lease ran out on Cluttons’
elegant head office in Berkeley Square, it
provided the opportunity to reassess their
approach to the working environment.
A technologically advanced property
consultant, Cluttons is part of a profession
that is still heavily dependent on paper, so
storage was a key factor.
The objective was to improve communication
by developing closer working relationships.
Though individual commercial areas operated
independently, there was the chance to
share more information on business
opportunities, creating a strong case for
open plan.
A storage strategy was developed based on
the Bisley LateralFile range that combines
high-density storage with a sleek finish to
complement systems furniture. The solution
required the availability of capacity, without
impacting on the openness of the space.
Low cabinets were used at the end of desk
clusters and to define meeting areas, while
extra deep, desk-height pedestals were
selected to provide the maximum desk-
located personal storage.

PROJECT PROFILE – BBC RADIO HUMBERSIDE
BBC Radio Humberside is now one of the
BBC’s most successful radio stations with
up to 250,000 listeners... its new state-
of-the-art production centre and studios
at the Queens Court in Hull also houses
regional television, Internet and broadband
TV output, with a staff of over 100.
Given the 24/7 culture of TV and radio,
furniture for the new facilities had to be
both robust and highly adaptable; the
flexible Bisley LateralFile storage system
was selected to store the many types of
different media, from video and DVD to
traditional paper-based systems.
To provide an organic element in the
office environment, planters were fixed
to the top of the cabinets and the subtle
silver finish gave a visual coherence to
the vibrant interior of the new building.
The BBC’s commitment to new office
facilities will ensure that its staff has the
best possible ambience to create the next
generation of broadcasting.

PROJECT PROFILE – BBC MEDIA VILLAGE
Five new buildings by architects Allies
and Morrison have joined the original
BBC White City to create the new 17-
acre BBC Media Village, providing office
space for approximately 6,000 people.
Set to regenerate the wider urban area,
the development provides state-of-the-
art broadcast facilities and offices as well
as shops, cafés and a post office – open to
local residents and BBC staff – centred on
a public boulevard.
Integral to the office accommodation is
Bisley LateralFile, providing a coherent
and cohesive structure to the office
environment. Specified in discussion with
DEGW and user groups, one carcase size
provides enough drawer, door and flipper
combinations to store a wide variety of
media. The same carcase is also used with
sloping shelves to display publications, as
MySpace lockers for personal storage
and as ‘post points’ with pigeonholes and
in/out boxes. Low cabinets with thick
seat pads have the dual purpose of storage
and seating for impromptu meetings.

PROJECT PROFILE – HEWITT BACON & WOODROW
Hewitt Associates is an NYSE-quoted,
global outsourcing and consulting firm
delivering a complete range of human
capital management services. Operating
in the UK as Hewitt Bacon & Woodrow
Ltd, the organisation recently moved its
London office to a new location at Foster
& Partners’ More London development.
Over 300 people moved over one weekend
into 56,000 sq ft of office space designed
by Pringle Brandon.
Hewitt Bacon & Woodrow undertook a full
filing survey before the move, organised
by specialist consultants McDermott and
Partners. The solution recommended was
Bisley LateralFile and enabled both US
and UK formats to be stored efficiently.
As market leader, Bisley was selected for
both high quality manufacture and a strong
financial base to ensure future supply.
Hewitt Bacon & Woodrow were able to
reduce storage space required by nearly 50%.

PROJECT PROFILE – THE MET OFFICE
The new £80 million Met Office headquarters
in Exeter, delivered on time and on budget,
is one of the most successful Public Private
Partnerships. The three-story site includes
two supercomputers, a training college,
sports and recreation area and conference
facilities as well as 13,000m2 of office space.
Taking advantage of the flexibility of Bisley
SystemFile, the Met Office selected both
double doors and tambours depending on
aisle space and five and six-drawer units to
vary the degree of privacy. Based on ‘working
scenarios’, the Met Office staff opted for
more storage rather than extra desk space
and using cabinets to act as space dividers
instead of screens.
Bisley was also vital to successful project
completion, accommodating the complex,
five-month delivery schedule, as well as
being able to respond quickly to changing
needs and increased demand.
The official opening of the new building
marked the Met Office’s 150th anniversary
creating a facility for successful development
well into the 21st Century.

PROJECT PROFILE – BOODLE HATFIELD
One of the West End’s oldest law firms,
has been providing bespoke legal services
for more than 275 years. Recent growth
has led the company to re-locate to a
new flagship headquarters building in
fashionable New Bond Street.
Like every law firm, Boodle Hatfield are
paperwork dependent and confidentiality
conscious. The Bisley Tower Pedestal range
specified made it easy to secure work in
progress quickly and easily. As well as the
flexibility of adjustable storage levels, a key
factor was the extra work surface provided
which can be retracted and locked away.
Bisley also supplied the Towers with pin-
able screens to match the screens on the
furniture systems and tops to match the
desks.
The hanging rail system used to position
desktop accessories greatly encouraged
people to adopt a ‘clean-desk’ policy,
which was particularly important in
overcoming the culture shock of an open
plan environment.

PROJECT PROFILE – CIEH
The Chartered Institute of Environmental
Health (CIEH). With 17 centres across the
UK, the CIEH has approximately 9,800
members dedicated to maintaining,
enhancing and promoting improvements
in public and environmental health. When
its head office required refurbishment to a
fire-damaged area, Bisley InnerSpace was
installed to provide high-density storage.
The design brief for the refurbishment made
it clear that the key to both a pleasant and
efficient office environment was effective
space utilisation. The benefit of InnerSpace’s
high-density design was the ability to gain
maximum storage capacity for minimum
floor space, increasing the storage capacity
of existing areas by up to 100%.
CIEH were able to increase capacity even
further by adopting a dedicated filing format.
By combining InnerSpace with the Mappei
filing system and modular file-containers to
concentrate their paper filing, additional
space savings of up to 80% could be
released, as well as promoting more
efficient document processing.
Focussing on productivity within the
workplace, the result was a successful
implementation and the decision to extend
the project further.

PROJECT PROFILE – HERBERT SMITH
The award-winning law firm opted for
Bisley’s storage to meet its expansion
needs for additional office space in the
City of London. Storage was considered
crucial to the overall fit-out, because
records management was so vital for
day-to-day working.
The key requirements were solutions for
‘personal’ storage at each workstation,
‘general’ filing in the open-plan areas,
‘high-density’ archives to cope with the
volume of work and one manufacturer
to supply a complete solution. Bisley
LateralFile was selected as the core
element for both personal and general
office storage. Bisley InnerSpace, the only
high-density mobile storage system
specifically designed for the ‘front office’
was selected to provide archive storage.
Though high-density, the design and
positioning of InnerSpace enabled ready
access to all files and maintained the
aesthetic of the office design.

PROJECT PROFILE – G & J SEDDON LTD
One of the North West’s largest construction
employers has completed its move to a
purpose built headquarters building.
Though taking particular care to create the
right working environment for its 100 plus
staff, the key design criterion was future
growth without further disruption.
Storage was a key element; dealing primarily
with construction contacts, Seddon’s operate
a paper-orientated process requiring
printed records of all the various build
stages, over long time spans. A solution
was devised using low and high two-door
cupboards, accommodating lever arch files
to store all common sizes of paper.
The Bisley storage matched the desks in
style and colour… the silver finish of the
desking and storage units matched
perfectly… Two-door Bisley LateralFile
units were used to give instant access to
‘work-ongoing’ and to provide surfaces for
fax and copiers, taller units at screen
height helped to create workstation
clusters. Tambour cabinets were used for
material needing less frequent access and
to define different office areas.

PROJECT PROFILE – GIVAUDAN
Givaudan – in their ‘Creation Centre’
laboratory, Givaudan called in expert
advice when their requirement for storing
thousands of flavours in the right
environment outgrew the available space.
A high–density storage solution was
provided by the award winning front office
mobile storage system – Bisley InnerSpace.
Asked to come up with a storage solution
for flavouring samples and ingredients is
an unusual brief; the flexibility of InnerSpace
proved vital. The shelving space needed to
store specially developed ingredient trays,
so adjustable storage levels to maximise
density and accommodate the variable
trays heights was required.
Security and confidentiality were also serious
considerations as Givaudan develop
unique flavours and tastes for their
customers. InnerSpace made it possible to
secure both historic ingredients and work
in progress. A further requirement was
matching the style of the modern laboratory
environment, InnerSpace achieved this
perfectly.

PROJECT PROFILE – THE ROYAL OPERA HOUSE
The enlarged and modernised Royal
Opera House, home to the Royal Opera
and the Royal Ballet, has proved to be
one of London’s most exciting public
spaces, since its re-opening.
Behind the scenes, up to 650 people
work on-site including costume makers,
cloth dyers and wig makers.
This prestigious project demanded a
breadth of product to meet the varying
requirements and applications. Wings
workstations together with a wide variety
of different storage solutions were chosen
for their adaptability and versatility and their
simple clean aesthetics complemented
the building design. The project was
successfully managed and completed by
Furniture For Business.

PROJECT PROFILE – SINGAPORE AIRLINES
When Singapore Airlines moved their
London office to the award–winning
Chiswick Park development, they required
an efficient and contemporary interior design
scheme to comfortably accommodate all
the people and associated paperwork of
a complex customer–facing operation.
The task set was to create a cohesive
working environment which provided
personal and team storage, and made
efficient use of budgets. Stylish Bisley
pedestals for personal use and co-ordinating
two-door cupboards accommodating the
lateral filing preferred by Singapore
Airlines were specified; the storage having
to compliment the white and chrome
colour scheme.
With just 5 days to complete the whole
design, the varied functionality and easy
specification of the Bisley units was a key
factor enabling the architects and furniture
suppliers to meet their deadlines.
